escado zarandeado is fish cooked on a mangrove-wood grill, known as a zaranda, from which the dish takes its name. It is a pre-Hispanic recipe originating from the north of Riviera Nayarit, and has become the most popular way of preparing fish in the area. From there, it has spread to neighboring states such as Sonora, Sinaloa, and Jalisco. In general, the fish is snapper, although red snapper and sea bass are also often used. The fish is served whole, cut in half, and seasoned with lemon juice, salt, pepper, and soy sauce, and accompanied by hot sauce and corn tortillas, cucumber, tomato slices, red onions, and beans. As with any traditional dish, every family claims to have the original recipe. These days, the technique is not only used to cook fish but other produce as well, such as shellfish.

WHALE WATCHING One of the most memorable experiences you can have in Vallarta is whale watching. The activity is one of the wide range of experiences that this destination offers, allowing you to merge with nature and discover a whole new undersea world and the variety of species that inhabit it. Humpback whales are one of the largest underwater creatures, reaching up to 16 meters (52 feet) long and 40 tonnes in weight, and you have the opportunity to observe them along the coast of Vallarta and in Banderas Bay. The cetaceans come to these shores to give birth to their young, since the waters are ideal for that purpose, giving you the chance to witness this exciting phenomenon of nature. The whales are known for the imposing jumps they make out of the water and for the magical chants the males sing underwater, which are thought to play a part in attracting females. The whale-watching season extends from December to March, but with a bit of luck you can see the first ones from November and the stragglers until May if the temperature of the sea over the season is suitable.

MONKEY MOUNTAIN HIKE The Riviera Nayarit not only has splendid beaches, but also interesting options for mountain lovers. The area around Puerto Vallarta and Banderas Bay is a mountainous region dominated by lush palms and other trees through which torrents and streams feeding rivers often flow, creating amazing natural landscapes. If one hill stands above the rest, it is without a doubt the Cerro del Mono. This peak 350 meters (1,150 feet) above sea level is one of the most attractive points in the area, located next to Higuera Blanca, a town situated just 20 minutes from Grand Palladium Vallarta Resort & Spa. The route to the summit has acquired great popularity as a hiking trail among both locals and visitors as it gives you the chance to appreciate the beauty of the Pacific in all its splendor. While climbing up can be a bit demanding, the reward is totally worth it. From the top, you can enjoy a unique 360º view over the entire bay that will leave you in love with this beautiful place. The tour starts from Higuera Blanca next to a stream that runs through the ranches in the area. You gradually enter a lush jungle featuring fig trees and coconut palms, among other species – the perfect lair for the many birds that will accompany you on your journey. Just before you reach the long-awaited summit, you will have to climb over a few rocks but don’t worry – they don’t pose any kind of

challenge and you’ll easily be able to get up on the hill and enjoy the show. There are several legends explaining the origin of the hill’s name. According to the locals, it comes from totems representing primates found in the area that are thought to have belonged to the people who lived here many years ago. Another version states that monkeys previously inhabited the area. However, none of these stories has been documented nor made official.

The shopping options in Puerto Vallarta are as varied as the gastronomy and beaches, with stores for all tastes. The city is full of shopping plazas, markets, tianguis, boutiques, jewelry stores and art galleries. The latter set Puerto Vallarta apart from other similar beach destinations: only here can you go out to buy a souvenir and come back home the proud owner of a work of art by a recognized artist. You can shop at virtually all hours, every day of the week, although some businesses close at noon. The shopping spaces and most of the stores in the centre are open from 11am to 9pm. DOWNTOWN Puerto Vallarta’s importance as a tourism destination means it brings together handicrafts from all states of the republic. In the Río Cuale Municipal Market you will find two floors full of pottery, blown glass, woodworking, onyx and obsidian pieces, varied textiles, spirits, t-shirts and other souvenirs. It’s the ideal place to pick up vacation memories. Huichol (or Wixárika) art, the most representative Vallartense tradition,

deserves a separate mention. Visiting stores and viewing the painstakingly created, splendid, and symbolismladen multicolored figures and masks made with tiny beads of glass or plastic (chaquira) or with yarn and wool is a gift for the senses and an experience in itself that doesn’t cost a penny. The center of Puerto Vallarta has many shops specializing in Huichol art, which as well as offering unique works, help the development of this indigenous community. ROMANTIC ZONE Formerly known as Viejo Vallarta, this area hosts the Old Town Market, a cultural tianguis of totally local and handmade products – fruits, vegetables, bread, chocolates, cheeses, soaps… – held on Saturdays (November to May, 9.30am–2pm). You’ll find many stores selling a selection of handicrafts from all over the country. The area’s narrow streets full of cafés, bars and restaurants are also home to stores specializing in decorative items. If you want a piece of furniture or work of art, stop by and visit its shops and galleries. A walk along the boardwalk is like visiting an exhibition, with everything from paintings and cartoons to ornaments, jewelry and wallets made from recycled material. Stroll down to the seashore and sharpen your eyes, and you can find a really special gift. HOTEL ZONE This area is where you’ll find all of the shopping malls except Plaza Marina (see below). The extensive Galerías mall is home to branches of many

international store and restaurant chains, alongside other shops and boutiques, a movie theater, a fastfood zone and a children’s area. From the second floor, you can enjoy a view of the port and cruise ships. Nearby Península Plaza has restaurants, decoration and furniture stores and some offices. And if you can’t find what you are looking for in either of those, you can also try Plaza Caracol, Las Islas, Plaza Genovesa and Macroplaza (which also has a movie theater), all in the same area. MARINA VALLARTA Marina Vallarta is a modern area with elegant hotels and resorts and sandy beaches. It has a public golf course and a large marina where luxury yachts dock. Here you can find boutiques and stores selling cotton, linen, and chiffon clothing, and others selling varied handicrafts, as well as excellent restaurants. And although prices here are a little higher here than in other areas, the quality of the objects justifies it. YELAPA Surrounded by unspoilt jungle and divided by a river, Yelapa is a place totally isolated from civilization where you can relax like nowhere else. This hidden beach was a favorite of American hippies who after escaping the police took refuge in places where they could sharpen their senses and commune with nature. Celebrities who visited here included Bob Dylan, Elizabeth Taylor, Jack Nicholson, Dennis Hopper and Peter Fonda. Today, a few families live in the area, who live mostly from fishing and tourism. Hundreds of people visit this bohemian beach every day, attracted by its tranquillity and wonderful landscape. On its shore is a row of restaurants that, along with seafood and beer, also sell raicilla, a local tequila-like liquor fermented from the roots of the maguey plant whose hallucinogenic effects have given Yelapa fame. The quiet beach, with golden sand and turquoise water, is ideal for snorkeling or lying on a sunbed and enjoying the unique views of the sea and the tranquillity without a worry in the world. To escape the beach for a while, tour Yelapa town,

which is full of art walls painted in vivid colors. Follow the steep and narrow stone alleyways, guided by the signs, and you reach the waterfall of Yelapa. The imposing drop is 45 meters (148 feet) high, surrounded by tropical vegetation, and you can bathe in the pool at the bottom. You can tour the town on foot, horseback or quad bike, but whichever way you choose, you’re sure to enjoy the magical atmosphere of Yelapa. The best way to get to Yelapa beach is by sea. Boats leave every day from the boardwalk in Playa de los Muertos, La Marina or Boca de Tomatlán. The journey takes about an hour and gives you the chance to marvel at the glorious landscape, divided between the sea and the tight vegetation of the hills. You can also reach the beach by mountain bike or by climbing from El Tuito, but that is only recommended for experienced athletes. BOCA DE TOMATLÁN This picturesque traditional fishing village is a must-see for all visitors to Puerto Vallarta. The small town straddles the Horcones river, which flows from the Sierra Madre mountains through the lush semitropical jungles of Jalisco. Here the people are friendly and polite, and the children play on the street and on the beach alongside abundant nature. Birds such as parrots, herons, hummingbirds and seabirds fill the air accompanied by the sounds of donkeys, roosters, dogs, cats and traditional rancheras. You’ll find humble but excellent traditional restaurants by the beach and in the

surrounding area. While the area has several quiet beaches suitable for bathing, the widespread increase of panga boats means visitors prefer to head to the beaches further south, such as Playa Las Ánimas, Playa Colomitos, Playa Quimixto, Playa Majahuitas, Yelapa, and others further away. There is also a hiking trail running from Boca to Quimixto along a path through the jungle that mostly borders the sea, though this is only recommended for real adventurers who don’t mind sweating to get to the beach. COLOMITOS Get to know the smallest and most charming beach in Mexico. Though only 30 meters (100 feet) long, its beauty, tranquillity and landscape make it worthy of inclusion in this list of destinations. Colomitos is an intimate beach surrounded by rocks and vegetation where you can relax and spend a great morning or afternoon away from the bustle of the city. The water is bright and crystal clear, which makes it an idyllic destination for snorkelers, who can observe the likes of royal angelfish, damselfish, and puffer fish. If you visit, also look for the secret waterfall. Few people know about it, which makes Colomitos one of Puerto Vallarta’s best beaches for explorers and photographers. TEQUILA No matter where in the world you live, if you think of one thing when you think of Mexico, it’s tequila. os Guachimontones is the jewel in the archeological crown of western Mexico. The site is known for its curious conical-stepped pyramids, built by the Teuchitlán culture. These include the largest round pyramid in the world – more than 16 meters (60 feet) high with 52 steps. The site also contains two ball courts that were used to play Mesoamerican ball games. Competitors had to move their hips to control the ball and hit it from one end of the court to the other. You definitely shouldn’t miss this pre-Hispanic gem.

Located in the heart of the Riviera de Nayarit, about seven kilometers (four miles) southwest of the town of La Cruz de Huanacaxtle, and some 29 kilometers (18 miles) northwest of the airport, this beach is hidden from view and only locals know its location. It is next to the federal highway that crosses the Riviera Nayarit, but the best plan is to ask a local to point you in the right direction. Away from the hustle and bustle, it is an ideal spot to enjoy a picnic by the sea of local products purchased from the Cruz de Guanacaxtle market, which opens on Sundays. But be careful, because you need to take everything you need: this really is a virgin beach without any nearby services. An insider tip? Playa Nahui seems small, but if you find the small cliff that protects it and enter there, you will find another kilometer of sand that is even calmer and cleaner, if that’s possible.
