INDIANA UNIVERSITY AUDITORIUM
2015–2016 SEASON
“Prior to the building of [IU Auditorium], the University had no appropriate place in which town and gown could be brought together in substantial numbers to hear great speakers or to enjoy musical and theatrical productions. Our hopes were more than realized. Soon the Auditorium became a great cultural resource, not only for the Bloomington community, but for the whole of South Central Indiana.
HERMAN B WELLS INDIANA UNIVERSITY CHANCELLOR, 1990
INDIANA UNIVERSITY AUDITORIUM: Celebrating 75 years of arts, culture, and community Since our inception, IU Auditorium has stood as a shining example of Indiana University’s commitment to the communties we serve. As an iconic landmark of South Central Indiana, we strive to uphold the vision and values on which we were founded, and are proud to be a place where people of all ages, backgrounds, and beliefs can gather together, take part in shared experiences, and bear witness to the diverse and breathtaking world of the performing arts. We invite you to celebrate with us during this 2015–2016 season. We have taken great effort to select an array of world-class artists and events which represent the breadth of cultures, performance styles, and musical genres that we have become known for throughout our 75 years. We are excited for you to join us as we reflect on our history, celebrate our present, and move boldly into the future.
LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT It gives me great pleasure to join in celebrating the 75th anniversary season of Indiana University Auditorium. The opening of IU Auditorium on March 22, 1941, was the realization of a long-cherished dream for Indiana University. As long ago as 1830, IU trustees had spoken of the pressing necessity of a large hall. That dream was finally realized thanks to the vision and foresight of IU’s legendary 11th president, Herman B Wells, who saw the Auditorium as a magnificent centerpiece of the university’s fine arts district and as a facility that would strengthen and honor IU’s great traditions in—and commitment to—the arts and humanities. The Auditorium has since been a central hub of cultural vibrancy and artistic expression. As a venue for students in the performing arts, the Auditorium has played an important role in augmenting our facilities for training in the arts. It has helped to foster many meaningful academic partnerships between world-class artists and our students. And, of course, it has hosted a multitude of superb artistic performances and brilliant lectures that have enriched the lives of members of the IU and surrounding community. The major milestone of the Auditorium’s 75th anniversary gives us not only an opportunity to celebrate the Auditorium’s rich history and proud traditions, but also to chart an ambitious course for its future. Indiana University will celebrate its bicentennial in 2020, guided by the ambitious Bicentennial Strategic Plan for Indiana University, approved by the IU trustees in 2014. Among its many initiatives, the plan reaffirms IU’s longstanding commitment to the arts. IU Auditorium, of course, will continue to be an integral part of IU’s wonderful tradition in the arts during the university’s third century. Thank you for helping to support the tradition of excellence that has become a hallmark of Indiana University Auditorium over the past 75 years. I hope you will join us often as we celebrate this important anniversary in the cultural life of our community. Yours sincerely,
Michael A. McRobbie President Indiana University
“IU Auditorium first opened its doors in 1941 and quickly built a legacy as our community’s gathering place. Like those who came before us, we feel honored to serve as stewards of our iconic venue, and to present world-class performances for the university and community. For the past 75 years, Auditorium programs have fostered meaningful connections, provided fodder for thoughtful contemplation, and engendered heartfelt celebration. It is for these opportunities to educate students, create shared experiences for our community, and serve as a laboratory for performers that the Auditorium was created. As we look to the future, it is our deepest hope that IU Auditorium can more fully reflect the talent, diversity, and culture of the world around us; and we will utilize this unique responsibility to enrich lives of Hoosiers for generations to come.”

“Tony Bennett makes time stand still.” —Chicago Tribune
Whether Bennett is dropping the mic for an impromptu “Fly Me to the Moon” unplugged or building audiences up for an unforgettable rendition of “For Once in My Life,” Bennett remains astounding, unparalleled, and supernaturally unfettered by time. Idolized by audiences young and old, Bennett’s appeal is so wide-ranging that he’s had his pick of pop stars to collaborate with, including Amy Winehouse, Christina Aguilera, and Lady Gaga. What is astounding, however, is no matter what the situation, Bennett continues to surprise audiences and defy expectation—both in the trajectory of his career and his masterful musical interpretation. 6

IU Auditorium prides itself on 4 leader in being the region’s 19 SIN C E presenting dance. Through the years, we have hosted a “who’s who” of choreographers and ensembles—including Agnes de Mille, Alvin Ailey, American Ballet Theatre, Martha Graham, José Limón, Paul Taylor, Pilobolus, and Twyla Tharp—previously here in 1978, 1982, and 2003. 1
A flourish of trumpets heralds the double bill of premieres that celebrates Twyla Tharp’s 50th anniversary. John Zorn provides the show’s vibrant introductory "Fanfare," followed by "Preludes and Fugues." Radiating with Tharp’s generous spirit and humanity, the first dance is set to J.S. Bach’s "Well-Tempered Clavier." Next, the wild and raucous humor that Tharp locates in the jazz of famed New Orleans pianist Henry Butler and trumpeter Steve Bernstein runs rampant through Yowzie, the second new dance. With its immaculate technique and joy, her fierce band of dancers brings the choreography to life. In each premiere, Tharp turns her decades of experience—choreography for Hollywood films, television, and the Broadway stage, in addition to ballets and modern works—into living proof that time is her partner as she continues to deepen and expand the singular imagination which makes her one of the century’s most treasured artists.

“Who knew Broadway could still be this much fun!” —Time Out New York
Don’t miss what The New Yorker exclaims as, “a fun machine from start to finish!” with “zingers and puns, slapstick and visual gags, and tap-dancing chorus girls” (New York Post). Loaded with big laughs, colorful characters, and the songs that made the 20s roar, Bullets Over Broadway is bringing musical comedy back with a bang.

Hailed by Time magazine as “musical theatre gold!” Bullets Over Broadway is a hilarious musical comedy about the making of a Broadway show. It’s the story of a young playwright who, in desperate need of financial backing for his next show, accepts an offer he can’t refuse from a mobster looking to please his showgirl girlfriend.

This student wants to order 4 tickets to the performance of CHIMES OF CHRISTMAS (2 adult tickets, 1 IUB student ticket, and 1 child ticket). She writes the date on her order form and fills in the circle for the seating area she wants. She then writes the number and total cost for each type of ticket she wants. If she wanted to order additional tickets in other seating areas (for her out-of-town friends, for instance), she would use a separate line on her form. ADULT

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS Can I order tickets online? Yes, online ordering is available via IUauditorium.com.
How do I become a Subscriber? You can become a Subscriber by purchasing at least one ticket to five or more event titles. Along with other benefits (see Subscriber benefits, page 41), becoming a Subscriber is one way to increase your Loyalty Point total—helping you get the best available seats. Patrons ordering at least one ticket to one to four event titles before our public on-sale date are considered Pre-orders. Pre-ordering ensures good seats, even if you only want to attend a few shows, in addition to other perks. (Note: Pre-orders will be filled in August in the order in which they are received.)
What are Loyalty Points, and how do I earn them? Loyalty Points are earned through subscription and donation history with IU Auditorium, and is how we reward our loyal patrons with better seating selections. Loyalty Point-holding patrons’ orders are filled before new Subscriptions, Pre-orders, and the general public in descending order—meaning the greater number of points you have, the sooner your seats are filled (see Loyalty Points, page 40). For more specifics on our Loyalty Point system and how points are earned, please visit IUauditorium.com/loyalty or call our Box Office at (812) 855-1103.
What if the seating area I select is sold out? If this happens, you will be contacted by our Box Office staff and provided with additional options. If you are placed in a lower-priced seating level, the difference in price will be refunded.
What kinds of accessibility services are offered by the Auditorium?
Although students need not be present at the time of purchase, they will be required to present their student ID upon entry. Those without ID upon entry may be asked to return to the Box Office in order to upgrade their ticket for the general admission price.
I’m a student, but not an IU Bloomington student. Can I still receive a student discount? We’re sorry, but only students enrolled on the Bloomington campus of Indiana University may use a student-price ticket to gain admission.
