New Student rientation
Y
ou’ve been admitted to IU! Now it’s time to take the next step — making the transition to a new university. New Student Orientation provides you the opportunity to become more familiar with the people, places and culture of IU. In addition, you will register for courses, take required placement exams, and learn about the services and programs that are vital to your life as an IU student. We have specifically designed this one-day orientation program with your experiences as a transfer student in mind. When you receive your Invitation to New Student Orientation, you will be given the opportunity to select from five one-day programs throughout the summer designed specifically for transfer students. The programs for transfer students take place on June 24 and July 8, 15, 20, and 21. Housing is available for those who need to arrive the evening prior to New Student Orientation.
While at this program, you will: •
Take placement exams required for all incoming IU students, including transfer students. Additional optional exams for placement and course credit are available during the program.
• • • • • •
Meet one on one with an academic advisor. Learn about IU’s email and technology systems. Receive your CampusAccess Card (student ID). Register for fall classes. Meet current and other new transfer students. Learn about IU’s support services and resources.

Starting in late March, we’ll be sending your Invitation to New Student Orientation. This invitation will include instructions on making your reservation.
New Student Orientation is required for all new students. You must attend New Student Orientation before you can register for classes.
Explore Your Financial Aid Options The only way to know if you qualify for aid is to apply, and the application process is free and online at www.fafsa.ed.gov. The FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) may be filed anytime after January 1 for the 2011-2012 school year. You’ll want to file by March 10 to ensure you’re considered for the maximum amount of financial aid available. If you have questions about financial aid, find contact information for the Office of Student Financial Assistance at www.indiana.edu/~sfa.

New Student Orientation Option in the Fall Students who are absolutely unable to attend New Student Orientation this summer will attend in August, just prior to fall semester. Remember, while you will be able to create a complete class schedule in the fall, many sections and some courses may fill during the summer program. Your attendance in the summer program is strongly encouraged.
Before Fall Semester IUBeginnings This unique program gives you the chance to connect with other IU transfer students before fall semester even begins! Hone your leadership skills while team-building with your peers at Indiana University’s premier outdoor retreat center. Through participation in the IUBeginnings program, you will become better equipped for your transition to campus, begin your time at IU knowing other students, and feel more prepared to meet the challenges of your new university.
Welcome Week Welcome Week begins on Wednesday, August 24 and is a key component in acclimating you to a new campus. You’ll have a chance to learn about your academic department, meet other IU students, attend various campus events, and join the IU community in celebrating the start of the new academic year. Don’t miss out on programs during Welcome Week specifically designed for you and other transfer students.
The IUBeginnings Transfer Leadership program takes place August 19-24, returning just in time for Welcome Week activities. Check out the website for additional information at fye.indiana.edu/iubeginnings. 5
Parent Information rientation isn’t just for students. Because you will play an important role in your student’s college experience, we invite you to attend the program as well so you can learn about IU’s resources, programs, and support services. During New Student Orientation, you will attend a few sessions with your student, and you’ll attend some sessions apart. Our family sessions include information on housing, financial aid, and ways to partner with the university for your student’s success. You will also hear from a current faculty member and learn much more about Indiana University Bloomington. We understand that “family” does not mean only “parents.” Guardians, spouses, and other significant supporters are always welcome to attend. However, please note that New Student Orientation is not designed to accommodate young children. Although Indiana University communicates primarily with your student, we take the relationship between the university, parents, and students seriously. It will be helpful to know what your student will be receiving and what he or she needs to do before 6
New Student Orientation and the start of classes. Please review the “Countdown to IU” checklist on the back cover of this guide to ensure nothing is overlooked. Please resist the temptation to make the online reservation for your student. Because your student will need to set up passwords and carefully read through each step, it’s important that he or she completes this process. While signing up, your student will have the opportunity to provide us with your email address so that we can send you a copy of the confirmation email. Encourage your student to do this so we may keep in touch with you too.
