The Office of First Year Experience Programs

What to Expect New Student Orientation is a required two-day summer event where you’ll make important decisions about your upcoming academic year while getting to know other new Hoosiers, current students, and IU faculty and staff.

Here are the important things to know about planning for and attending your orientation program:

✭ About the Program. New Student Orientation is

required of all new Hoosiers. It gives you a foundation for your IU experience—you’ll learn about services, programs, and academics while also registering for classes, visiting classrooms, and learning IU traditions.

✭ Academics. You and your parents will hear about

academics from advisors and an IU professor and then students meet one on one with an academic advisor to plan courses and register.

✭ Placement Exams. Your scores on the required and

optional placement exams help your advisor know which courses are appropriate—and sometimes earn you IU credit hours toward your degree.

✭ Reservations. NSO reservations are taken online

at fye.indiana.edu. You will be able to choose from a variety of dates in June and July based on your academic needs. (Can’t make it to orientation then? Log in to FY(Me) to let us know and we’ll send you information about the August program.)

The sooner you make your reservation, the more options you’ll have—so reserve your spot today!

✭ Mailings. We’ll send you an email confirmation soon

after you make your NSO reservation. Once you have that, go ahead and make your travel plans. As the date draws nearer, we’ll mail you a packet with final information and send emails with important dates and materials. Check your IU email often!

If you or a guest will need special accommodations for a disability or mobility issue during New Student Orientation, please let us know on your reservation.

We will contact you to help you make arrangements.

Stay close to the action and get a preview of on-campus living by spending the night in a residence hall during your orientation this summer. After a busy day, it’s great to hang out with other students at NSO Late Night!

Orientation Fees The student fee is currently under review and will be available when you make your reservation. The parent/guest fee is $30 for the first person and $15 for each additional person. These fees include lunch and dinner on the first day of orientation as well as your CampusAccess Card (student ID). Fees do not include overnight housing costs.
