Office of First Year Experience Programs

This fall, you’ll be a first year student at Indiana University Bloomington.

We’ll help you get ready for the next chapter in your life at New Student Orientation this summer. It’s your chance to explore IU’s beautiful campus, learn about support programs and resources, register for classes, and meet other freshmen.

What to Expect New Student Orientation takes place over two days. During the program, you’ll become familiar with campus, make important decisions about the upcoming year, and meet other new students.

Here are some important things to know about planning for and attending your orientation program:

✭ Academics. Your program includes presentations by advising staff and professors. You will also meet one on one with an academic advisor to plan your course schedule and register for classes.

✭ Placement Exams. You are required to take a math skills assessment during NSO. This is in addition to the required foreign language placement exam you’ll take prior to arriving for orientation. You can also choose to take a variety of optional exams for placement or possible credit toward your IU degree. For more details, see the New Student Orientation section of our website: fye.indiana.edu.

✭ Housing. We hope you’ll plan to spend the night on

campus with other students during NSO. You’ll check in at dinner time, after you’ve met other students, and be close to the action of NSO Late Night, including our popular Campus Legends Tour.

✭ Travel. You can start making your travel plans as

soon as you have your NSO confirmation. As the date draws nearer, we’ll mail you a packet with final information and your temporary parking pass.

Make Your Reservation Today We can’t wait to introduce you to Hoosier life at New Student Orientation (NSO). You can choose an orientation program from a variety of dates in June and July based on your academic needs.

Log in to your personalized FY(Me) page. See the link at fye.indiana.edu. Follow the step-by-step directions. Be sure to provide an email address for your parent or guardian so we can copy them on your confirmation. Check your IU email for your reservation confirmation and read it carefully. It includes: • Information about your required Foreign Language Placement Exam that you will take online prior to NSO. • Instructions for other items you must complete before NSO such as the MoneySmarts online course, an Academic Planning Worksheet, and a Health History form. • Details about travel, parking, and accommodations for you and your guests during NSO.

If you can’t make it to orientation in June or July, log in to FY(Me) to let us know and we’ll send you information about the August program.

Program for Parents Parents and family members are an important part of your IU experience. That’s why we hold orientation sessions just for them. They’ll get tips for helping you make the transition to IU, and learn about the resources, programs, and support in place for your success. Learn more at http://go.iu.edu/6Z1.

Help for People with Disabilities If you or a guest will need special accommodations for a disability or mobility issue during your orientation, please let us know when you place your reservation. We will contact you to help you make arrangements.

Orientation Fees The student fee is $135 and will appear on your first tuition bill from the Office of the Bursar. The parent/family fee is $30 for one person ($15 for each additional guest) and includes one set of materials. At check in, you can authorize parent fees to be included on your first bill.
