You’re invited!

What to Expect New Student Orientation is a required two-day event where you’ll make important decisions about your academic career while getting to know other new Hoosiers, current students, and IU faculty and staff.

Here are the important things to know about planning for and attending your orientation program:

✭ About the Program. New Student Orientation is

required of all new Hoosiers. It gives you a foundation for your IU experience—you’ll learn about services, programs, and academics while also registering for classes, meeting with an advisor, and learning IU traditions.

✭ Academics. You and your guests will hear about

academics from advisors and an IU professor and then students meet one on one with an academic advisor to plan courses and register.

✭ Placement Exams. Your scores on the required and

optional placement exams help your advisor know which courses are appropriate—and sometimes earn you IU credit hours toward your degree.

✭ Reservations. NSO reservations are taken

online at fye.indiana.edu. Your program will begin on either Wednesday, January 2, or Thursday, January 3, and will take two days to complete. Reserve your spot today!

✭ Mailings. We’ll send you an email confirmation soon

after you make your NSO reservation. Once you have that, go ahead and make your travel plans. As the date draws nearer, you will receive final information and preparation materials through email as well, including items that you will need to complete prior to NSO. Be sure to check your IU email often!

Your To-Do List We’re glad you’re going to be a Hoosier! Here’s how to get started:

If you haven’t already done so, create your IU computing account through itaccounts.iu.edu. Make your online reservation at the FY(Me) tab of our website fye.indiana.edu/fyme. Remember to provide a parent or guardian email address so we can copy them on your confirmation. Read your email confirmation carefully. It includes details about the things you must do before NSO, like completing your Academic Planning Worksheet and Health History information. Need housing on campus for spring semester? Be sure to apply as soon as possible at rps.indiana.edu. Explore our website fye.indiana.edu, follow us on Twitter (@iufye), and “like” us on Facebook, www.facebook.com/iufye. We’ve got a lot of important and exciting information to share.

Special Program Just for Parents Parents and family are an important part of your IU experience—and that’s why we hold orientation sessions just for them that coincide with the first day of your program. They will learn tips for helping you make the transition to IU, while also hearing about some of the resources, programs, and support in place for student success.

Housing If you have a contract to live on campus for the spring semester, you may check into your residence center as early as 8 a.m. on Wednesday, January 2. Meal contracts also begin that day. Your first day of NSO will begin at noon (10:45 a.m. if taking the biology exam) and end at approximately 7:30 p.m. You may want to eat lunch prior to your program. Refreshments will be provided throughout the day.

Placement Exams You will take required exams in math and foreign language during your two-day NSO program. An optional biology exam is offered the morning before your program begins. The optional Online Chemistry Placement Exam must be taken by December 1. Your confirmation will provide a link to the exam and details.

If you or a guest will need special accommodations for a disability or mobility issue during New Student Orientation, please let us know on your reservation. We will contact you to help you make arrangements.

Orientation Fees The student cost of NSO is $135 and will be billed to the student through the Office of the Bursar. The guest fee is a flat rate of $30 and may be included with the student billing.
