Your NSO Preparation Packet Details about your New Student Orientation Program

Get ready for your New Student Orientation program—you’ll be a true Hoosier soon!

What to Bring to NSO with You Be sure to bring the following items with you: •

Your 10-digit university ID number. Log in to FY(Me) to find this number.

Your IU username and passphrase so you can register for classes.

A photo ID so you can get your IU student ID card.

A refillable water bottle, comfortable shoes and clothing, toiletries, and money for meals on Day 2.

Your parking permit (attached) from this confirmation—it must be displayed on your dashboard. All vehicles parked on campus must have a permit.

One or more canned food items for the “Feed the Hungry, Class of 2020” donation to Hoosier Hills Food Bank.

In addition, be sure to log in to your FY(Me) page, complete items on your to-do list found there, and read through your confirmation details.

Watch your IU email—several days prior to your program you will receive travel and parking updates, details regarding optional exam locations, and all final information.

New Student Orientation


Your Hoosier experience begins with New Student Orientation— The Office of First Year Experience Programs and we can’t wait to meet you! Preparing for NSO Log in to FY(Me) at fye.indiana.edu to update your to-do list and to read through your full confirmation. It explains NSO fees, lodging options, testing, and other details. In particular, be sure to complete your: • Required online placement exams • Academic planning steps listed at ud.indiana.edu/getting-started/new-students to best prepare you for your academic advising and course registration. • Required MoneySmarts financial literacy exercise Your to-do list will help you access and track your progress on these and all items you need to complete. Parents may view a sample to-do list in the Resources pages of the FYE website.

Orientation Housing Students are encouraged to stay on campus with other new students and our staff during NSO. NSO student housing is in Union Street Center; the housing fee of $42.50 per night (tax included) will be charged to your IU billing account after NSO by Residential Programs and Services. We encourage you to make a reservation through the link provided on your FY(Me) confirmation page. Pillow, towel, and bed linens will be provided. Guests have options both on and off campus, including at several partner hotels offering special NSO packages just for them. All include a discounted rate, welcome packet, breakfast, and other amenities. View all student and guest lodging options at fye.indiana.edu/orientation/ new-student/hotelaccommodations.cfm.

Disability Assistance If you or a guest need accommodations or have mobility limitations, be sure to connect with our office well in advance of your program for assistance in planning your time on campus. Parents/guests needing additional mobility support may want to bring a family member or friend, as we cannot provide a staff member for personal assistance.

Events and Schedule You’ll check in at Union Street Center, Cedar Hall (see below for times). For much of your day you will be with other students in sessions and workshops while your parents or guests will be in sessions designed just for them. You will have dinner with your guests on campus before the evening events begin. All student NSO sessions are required, and course registration takes place at the end of Day 2, so plan your travel accordingly. First day: Check in at 9 a.m. Your program will go late into the evening and will end back at Union Street Center. Optional exams are offered at 7:30 p.m. the evening before (recommended) and/or as early as 7:15 a.m. before you check in to your program.

Second day: The second day is personalized for you and begins as early as 8 a.m. It includes your academic advising appointment and course registration as well as options for financial or housing consultation, tours, and more. You should be finished by 2 p.m. (athletes by 4 p.m.).

Second day: Final sessions for you and your guests take place in the morning. The afternoon is personalized for you and includes your academic advising appointment and course registration, as well as options for financial or housing consultation, tours, and more. Your program will end by 6 p.m.

Placement Exams REQUIRED: Math Placement Exam (MPE) and Foreign Language Placement Exam (FLPE): These exams are offered only online and you must take them prior to your orientation program in order to register for first semester courses. See details and access exams on the FYE Orientation Testing page at fye.indiana.edu/orientation/ new-student/testing.cfm. OPTIONAL: Calculus Advanced Placement Test or Biology Departmental Exam: Both exams are offered on campus prior to the start of your NSO program (see schedule details above) and again in the early fall. Your online confirmation has been updated with more details, including times and locations. Log into FY(Me) to view. Chemistry Placement Exam: This exam is offered only online and is available now. Take this exam if you anticipate taking chemistry courses at IU. Access it through your online NSO confirmation page.
