NEW STUDENT ORIENTATION

CONFIRMATION Events and Schedule Check in for August New Student Orientation will take place in the Georgian Room of the Indiana Memorial Union at 12:15 p.m. You’ll want to have lunch prior to the program (light refreshments will be provided). Throughout New Student Orientation, you and your guests will have separate sessions. Parents/family members will have conference-style information sessions in the afternoon while you complete required testing and meet with other new students. Bringing young children is not recommended, as the program is designed for adults. Final sessions conclude around 6:30 p.m. Day Two is personalized for you; Expect a 3-hour commitment between 8:30 a.m. and 6 p.m. You will receive information about what time your day will begin at Check-in on Day One. There is no parent/ family programming on Day Two.

Students or Parents with Disabilities If you or your parents need specific accommodations or have mobility limitations, contact us at fye@indiana.edu or (812) 855-HELP (4357) well in advance of your program so that we can give you information about services available at IU during your program. Parents or guests needing additional help may want to bring along a family member or friend, as we don’t have staff available for this purpose.

How to Prepare for Orientation Log in to FY(Me) to update and complete all of the items on your “To Do List” that need to be done prior to orientation. Items you need to take care of include:

Get ready for your academic advising appointment by completing the Academic Planning Worksheet included in your confirmation email. Pay overdue balances from any IU campus at least 24 hours before your arrival on campus. Pay close attention to the Health Information from the IU Health Center in your confirmation email.

Placement Exams

What to Bring

You will take required exams in math and foreign language during your two-day NSO program. You will be able to complete a foreign language exam in French, German, Hebrew, Italian, Japanese, Latin, Russian, or Spanish during your program. If you plan to test in French, German, or Spanish, you should also complete the online exam by following the instructions in your confirmation email. You can also take an optional biology or calculus exam before your program begins, but you will have to arrive early to do so.

Please be sure to bring the following items with you to NSO:

To take one of the optional biology or calculus exams, you will check in to the Georgian Room of the Indiana Memorial Union (same location as program check-in) at 10:45 a.m. the MORNING OF the first day of your program. If you have been granted testing modifications due to a diagnosed learning disability, be aware that your check-in time will be affected. Your personalized notification provides details. Transfer Students: You need to plan to take the Mathematics Skills Assessment unless you have IU Bloomington credit in MATH-M 211 OR both MATH-M 118 AND MATH-M 119. Visit onestart.iu.edu to view your “Credit Transfer Report” if you’re unsure.

Your 10-digit university ID number. You can log in to FY(Me) to find this number. A photo ID so you can receive your CampusAccess card (student ID). A refillable water bottle for use at water stations. A canned food item to donate to the Hoosier Hills Food Bank. If you are a transfer student, a printed copy of your “Credit Transfer Report.”


Orientation Housing Overnight accommodations are not provided for participants at August New Student Orientation. Students and family members will need to make arrangements accordingly. If you are living on campus for the academic year, you may check in to your assigned residence hall beginning at 8 a.m. on Sunday, August 12. You will need to pay an early-arrival fee of $35 for each night prior to Wednesday, August 15. Instructions on registering for Residence Hall Early Arrival were included in your confirmation email and should be submitted by 5 p.m. on Wednesday, August 8. Check out the “Move-In Guide” at rps.indiana.edu for more information about housing at IU. If you plan to live on campus for the 2012-2013 academic year and have not yet completed your application for oncampus housing, you will want to do so by visiting rps.indiana.edu prior to New Student Orientation.

New Student Orientation Fees Student Fee The student fee is $135 and will be on your first tuition bill from the Office of the Bursar. Parent/Family Fee The parent fee is $30 and includes one set of materials per family. You can authorize parent fees to be included on your first tuition bill at check-in.

Proud Traditions: Welcome Week 2012 Welcome Week begins on Wednesday, August 15, and is an essential part of your first year experience. During the week, you will connect with IU people, places, and resources. You’ll participate in fun and informative activities with faculty, staff, new students, and returning students. You will receive a copy of the Welcome Week schedule at check-in for your residence hall if you live on campus, or at the Transfer Kick-Off or Off-Campus Freshman Meetings taking place on the first evening of Welcome Week. Parking on Campus If you are living on campus, we ask that you park in your residence center parking lot and walk to the Indiana Memorial Union to check in to the program. If you are not living on campus, there is limited visitor parking in lots adjacent to the Union and at the Jordan Avenue lot near the Office of Admissions. These are all pay lots. As space in the Union pay lot is often limited, shuttle bus service will be available to the Jordan Avenue lot prior to program check-in and at the end of the program day.
