elcome to Indiana University and our proud Welcome Week tradition. Our goal during Welcome Week is to ease your transition to college life and help you have a great start to your IU journey. Participate in the fun, discover the opportunities, and take advantage of all that IU has to offer! This booklet will help you plan your activities and map your course. If you need help or more information about any of the activities weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve listed, please refer to the IU contact information in the back. Get Ready ... Welcome Week will answer many of your questions. It is full of opportunities to get out, get involved, and get informed. There really is no better time to discover all that awaits you here at IU.

Get Set ... To begin, look through this checklist and try to complete the tasks before the week is up. Whether you arrive early or come on Move-in Day, check these items off and you’ll be on your way to getting acquainted with campus.  

Get settled in your room. Make it your home away from home. Hit Midnight Madness on Friday night for things you forgot! Review this booklet and learn about all of the events that will be taking place during Welcome Week.

 Residents: Get to know your Resident Assistant (RA), the Welcome Week Assistants (WWAs), and your neighbors. Begin building relationships with all the people you are going to be living with for the next nine months. 

Attend the Freshman Induction Ceremony and Picnic on Wednesday—you’ll be glad you did. Be sure to invite your family.



Go to all of your residence hall and floor activities, the Off-Campus Freshman Meeting, or Transfer Kick-Off. Some Welcome Week events are optional, others are required, but all are important.

Get Ready, Get Set

Now that you’ve arrived on campus, you might find yourself asking, “So what should I do next? Where should I go? How do I get started?”

Get Ready, Get Set



Be prepared for and attend all of your scheduled academic commitments. This includes your school/college academic orientation on Thursday, advising meetings, and any placement exams you may still need to take.



Learn about cultural opportunities on campus. Visit at least one museum and check out this year’s IU Auditorium, theatre, and music performance schedules. Be sure to attend CultureFest on Thursday.



Find out about the support services and educational resources on campus. Hit as many open houses as you can on Friday afternoon and qualify for great prizes and giveaways!



Take your class schedule and find each of your classrooms. Maybe you’ll even have the opportunity to introduce yourself to a professor or instructor. Look for IU Guides on your first days of class to help you find your way.



Visit the bookstores. Take your class schedule when you buy your books. Many residence halls plan group trips to the bookstores and make it a social event.



Do something social. Take advantage of the opportunities in your residence hall, and don’t miss the Traditions and Spirit of IU on Friday where you’ll experience the excitement of being a Hoosier at Assembly Hall!



Establish a local banking account and plan your budget. Don’t get caught short later by not planning ahead.



Visit the Herman B Wells Library and its Welcome Week Open House to learn about all of the information, resources, and services you’ll be using for your classes.



Work out at the Student Recreational Sports Center (SRSC) or the Health, Physical Education, and Recreation (HPER) center.



Explore your service opportunities at IU and in the Bloomington community by joining your new friends at New Student Service Day on Saturday, August 27.

Sex, Drugs, and Rock ’n Roll will feature music, interactive booths, snow cones, cotton candy, and a simulated driving course. Come meet friends, get to know several student groups and the staff at various campus offices, and pick up valuable resources while having a fun afternoon. Once you’ve attended the Culture Centers’ Open Houses and RecSports’ RecFest, come experience Sex, Drugs, and Rock ’n Roll.

1–3 p.m. RecFest, Woodlawn Field Learn about IU Campus Recreational Sports programs and activities at this annual extravaganza. Enjoy free food, giveaways, entertainment, and games while discovering all of your options with Recreational Sports. From our amazing facilities and programs, to Intramural Sports and Club Sports, Aquatics, Group Exercise Sessions, Personal Training, and more—come check it out!

How much IU spirit do you have? Hosted by the Office of First Year Experience Programs, IU Athletics, and Residential Programs and Services, this Welcome Week tradition is one you won’t want to miss! The prize giveaways start when the doors open at 4 p.m. and it just gets better from there. Afterward, hop on the bus or walk south to the Union for fun, food, and more.

5–8 p.m. Taste of the Union, Indiana Memorial Union Who can resist food, fun, and lots of entertainment? The Taste of the Union event has all of this and more. Students who attend will enjoy dinner options throughout the Indiana Memorial Union (IMU). There is live music, karaoke, games, and prizes—all for free at the Taste of the Union. Explore all of the services at the IMU: bowling and billiards, movies, video games, comedy shows, and more. There will also be many opportunities for students to meet peers from across campus while getting a true taste of all the Union has to offer. 11

1–3 p.m. FaithFest Dunn Meadow (adjacent to the IMU) A variety of religious groups will welcome you to campus and provide information about their activities. There will also be free food, prizes, and a lot of fun. Come and meet the unique and diverse religious groups on campus and in Bloomington.

5–7 p.m. Hillel Opening BBQ Helene G. Simon Hillel Center, 730 E. Third Street Get a taste of Jewish life at IU at your “home away from home.” The student board and staff of Hillel welcome all new and returning Jewish students to this free barbeque. St. Paul Catholic Center, 1413 E. 17th Street Connect with the center and with many of IU’s Catholic students after Sunday’s 5:30 Mass. This active and studentcentered resource is a great place to start your year.

EVENING HOURS Residence Hall Floor Meetings Get to know others in your community! This is a required meeting for all new and returning students on your floor. Times may vary; check with your RA for details.

Activities During the First Week of Classes and Beyond s classes begin, orientation continues with programming and activities all across campus. Be sure to read your email updates and check listings in the residence halls, the Indiana Memorial Union, student support offices, and the Indiana Daily Student (IDS). Look for great social events, tours, academic support workshops, and programs to help you make the most of your IU experience.
