Networking Improves Relationships When people use the term networking it comes with the connotation that you are “selling something”. This is unfortunate because you are selling something to someone every day of your life. Whether you are trying to convince that perfect woman to say “yes” to a date or marriage” you or you are trying to convince your parents to let you stay out on a school night. You are networking in one form or another.

3 Ways to Customize Your Resume To Get The Job You Want While most resumes appear to look the same on the surface, there are key areas that differentiate well-written winning resumes from those that never make it into the hands of the hiring managers. To customize your resume for the job that you want, pay attention to the following three elements: resume style, career objective, and personal profile.

achievements. Most people make a mistake of including generic statements under their career objective. To be effective, your statement must tell a potential employer that you know what kind of job you want, what experience you have in order to get the position, and what you are willing do to become a successful professional with the company.

The layout and the style of your resume are as important as the information you are including about your experience and qualifications. The two most commonly used resume styles are chronological and functional. Chronological resume calls for listing your professional expertise in order, much like the name implies, and is used those with some to extensive professional experience. Functional resume showcases your experience by the type of qualifications you have, and is typically used by those lacking professional experience or those changing careers. While there are no set rules on determining the best resume style to use, it is important to keep in mind that the resume format can help or hurt your chances to put your best foot forward. You will want to pick the format that will best highlight your qualifications and your experience. Thus, it is important to understand the difference between the two, as well as research which format is more preferred in the field of your choice.

While your career objective tells your potential employer why you are applying for the job at their organization, your professional profile sells your expertise and convinces the employer that you are the best candidate for the job. Your professional summary/profile gives you the opportunity to differentiate yourself, and give your employer an insight into you. Two commonly made mistakes for this section of the resume are poor writing and inclusion of personal information. Note that your age; ethnicity, gender, religious affiliations, etc. do not make a difference on how you handle yourself as a business professional. Such information should never be included in a resume or any job application materials (even when asked on a job application, such information is optional and is for demographics study only).

Career objective is very important to your resume. While there is an ongoing debate about the need for listing your objective on your resume, choosing to include this goal statement shows that you have given your professional growth some serious thought. Consider your career objective as the first impression you make on your potential employer. Make sure that your goals are specific and directional in terms of industry, position title, and future professional

Make sure this section is well written and errorfree. Strong positive statements about your expertise will give a good first impression to your employer. Make sure to proofread the whole resume, with emphasis to this section, as it appears at the start of your resume. An effective personal statement must leave your employer with an impression that you are confident, credible, and professional. Keep in mind – your resume is your sales pitch, demonstrating your qualifications and experience to your potential employer. Seize the opportunity to put your best foot forward and you will reap the rewards.

Paulette Jones Paulette Jones, born and nurtured in the city of New Orleans, during the turbulent 1960’s where she attended the public school system. It wasn’t until she was an adult that she realized she had a gift, the gift of storytelling. In 2009 she embarked on a new career that would take her back to a possibility, that she had almost forgotten and if not for Hurricane Katrina she may not have remembered. Paulette Jones was first recognized when three of her stage plays were performed at the Black Repertory Theater in Berkeley, Ca. Paulette’s return to writing also came with another career as she also began her own publishing house, Your Time Publishing.

About the Company Your Time Publishing is a publishing house that was created for the writers who had no outlet for their stories. For years writers talk about not being able to share their stories with others and how it is almost impossible to get a publishing house to look at your work, let alone publish it.

About the Book In the 1930’s a fathers’ betrayal and a child’s disbelief are the basis for this novel. The story is about families, traditions, tragedy, survival and restoration. The stories are poignant, brutal in their honesty and will grip your very soul. Paulette does a brilliant job delivery a story that depicts a hidden side of Americana.

New Orleans native and gifted story teller Paulette Jones will rejoin us on April 12, 9 AM Pacific/Noon Eastern.

With the technology available to give writers an opportunity to be published, Your Time Publishing opened its doors, January 4, 2010. Since then they have several books in print, with even more projects in various stages of publication and are in negotiations with five authors. www.yourtimepublishing.com/

Writing SEO for A Living Sometimes if you get good enough at writing SEO you start considering doing it for a living. Be warned however --this is not a career for people who are perfectionist or who see it as a way to having a reputation as an expert advertising copywriter. If you want to research the SEO writing market go to the big writing auction sites like Elance and Guru. This will give you a good idea of the low pay involved in such a career. You will also notice that the individuals with the least feedback and work on there are those that have the idea that they will be selling high quality writing on the Internet. This is not the market nowadays. Lower priced writing that is done for cheap is what most business people on the Internet are willing to pay for. Most of them are likely to have less education then you and also have no real idea what great writing is. Great writing, which is what the mass majority of Americans, which have a Grade Four Reading level, can read. So this is not really the arena to start writing like Shakespeare. For instance on Elance there are many writers from the United States stuck in offline world prices for their work from 1988. You see them bidding for jobs at a dollar a word. However the going price is more like a cent a word and they have no idea that the market has changed to favor outsourcing from India. They have nothing to offer a

client of value except for a resume dripping with obsolete education. Unfortunately what they teach you as an English major is not the skill set that you need to please the client who wants SEO articles done. If you truly are a great talent then you go to an offline agency that may be able to place you in the right writing job for the right price. SEO writing is not for those who can’t tolerate mediocrity as often-bad grammar and misspelled words are actually part of achieving this type of content.

Career Shift during Recession One of the ways to cope with recession is considering a career shift. Not too many likes the idea of changing career plans during a downturn. However, if you have already felt the effect of recession – say you’ve been laid off, why not give a different career path a chance, right? It may not have quickly crossed your mind to prioritize job security when choosing a job. However, whether you are choosing your first job or making a switch, it can be helpful, particularly during our present economic situation. Indeed, no job is 100% secure.

doing their best to get more deductions. More people are monitoring their books, so the demand for auditors or accountants is much greater.

But there are some industries that have workers feeling more confident that even if they get fired, the demand is so great that finding another job would be very easy.

Pharmaceuticals As long as physicians prescribe drugs, people are still going to take them. This means that if you are working as a pharmacist or as a quality assurance analyst in pharmaceutical laboratory, you are in good hands.

So how do you choose a career that’s right for you during a recession? Here are some recession-proof careers that are worthy of consideration: Education There is a great shortage of teachers. No matter how down the economy is, teachers will always be indemand. Children will continue to go to school. Also, lots of unemployed adults may decide to further their education. Although teaching is not one of the highestpaid careers there is, making only about $30,000 to $45,000 a year, people will still settle for a career that does not earn more because they are tired of being unemployed for a long time. This is especially true for those who would want to try something new anyway or those who despise the roller-coaster rid that a corporate life offers.

Energy and Utilities Energy consumers may cut back, but the consumption will not stop. The same with utilities, people will still light their homes. So, jobs like maintenance and utility administration prove to be more stable than others during a recession.

Military Since the military is always hiring, particularly during wartime, during a recession soldiers will not be that affected. Serving the military also means that most of your living expenses will be covered. Security Recession does not stop crime. With the increase in layoffs, more people are considering robbing banks and doing other crimes. So, the need for security workers becomes greater. Environmental Sciences The convenient truth is that the eco-friendly trend is not going anywhere. This means that choosing a

Healthcare Job hunters with Information Technology background are said to be a good fit to the healthcare industry – particularly nursing. This is because Nursing is an information-driven career. And, it is one useful career during a recession because healthcare is an industry that does not usually get affected during these times. Auditing Auditors are also usually unaffected by downturns. In a recession, individuals and firms are more probably

Cover Story

Best Advertising for Small Businesses

The best advertising, whether for a small business or large, is advertising that works. The price a small business owner pays for advertising would not be an issue if the outcome of the ad was known. If a small business owner had a choice of paying $1000 a month for advertising that brought in a guarantee of at least $2000 a month profit, or paying $500 a month for advertising that brought in $750 worth of profit a month, there would be no hesitation. That savvy small business owner would gladly shell out $1000 each month for the advertising. Small business advertising has no such guarantees however. It’s not like buying a refrigerator that is guaranteed to keep the milk and eggs cold. $1000 of advertising might bring $8000 of profit, or it might bring in zero. So, what’s a small business owner to do, especially if faced with a limited budget?

expensive buy because the small business advertiser is buying the local neighborhood instead of the total metropolitan circulation of the metropolitan paper. Companies such as YourHub, a product of the Denver Post and Rocky Mountain News, are licensing these citizen media sites to other newspapers in other areas and those welcome small business advertising and discount the price. They also encourage citizen journalism. The small business owner can contribute articles, photos and local stories, although the paper will undoubtedly edit something too unabashedly self-serving. This is still a great way for a local entrepreneur to introduce himself or herself to the neighbors in a friendly, casual and soft sell way.

The best answer is to use small business advertising that only charges the owner when and if it works. There are several ways of doing this. The primary method is called pay per click. This Internet option is available with numerous online merchant sites as well as hundreds of newspapers across the country and the globe. Simply put, a small business agrees to pay a specified amount to the publisher, or the merchant site, for each ad that entices a consumer to come to the small business site. The price paid is generally an amount that the small business owner has bid on. More and more newspapers are offering this option as they struggle to maintain competitive online with eBay, Craigslist and other pure play classified and marketplace sites. Another option for pay per click and inexpensive advertising for a small business that wants to concentrate on local customers is with regional publications or some of the larger metropolitan newspapers and groups that are introducing citizen media sites. Musicians and CD Duplication These days, technology is always available for any inspiring musician to record, create, and even duplicate CDs. The duplication of CDs will involve CD-R media. CD-R media prices have dropped a lot over the last several years, making them affordable for anyone who wants to use them.

just right for musicians looking to make profit off of their CDs.

If your band is ready to start selling CDs, your best option may be to have your CDs replicated. Replicated CDs are the same CDs that you'll find in music stores by major label artists. They all have excellent artwork printed on the CD inserts, nice tray card inserts, screened art on the CD, and they are even shrink wrapped. The retail CDs that you buy aren't duplicated, they are replicated. This means that an exact replica of your master CD has been stamped out on all of the other CDs. If you are serious about selling your music for profit, replication is the way to go. The fact is, most stores simply won't sell duplicated CDs. Duplicated CDs can be against the law, which is the main reason retail stores simply won't carry them. Replicated CDs let the stores know that the CD is legit, and they will almost always carry those CDs. To duplicate CDs, you need a computer with a CD burner, your CD-R media, cases, and a lot of man hours. With CD replication, you can get many more copies, professional artwork, a barcode for inventory, and cases included. Replication is obviously to expensive for those looking to simply back up pictures and data on a personal computer, although the prices are
