First Moodboard
DGA04 When combining all three moodboards in one, a mutual interest in an explanation of “growth involving a tree with different branches surfaced and became the general point of focus. Combining keywords into a framework which could illustrate the tree, as shown on the side, resulted in a mapping for the images which would be used. Using different images from the first iteration of the moodboards and using those to illustrate the keywords as mapped on forehand a tree was formed on the second iteration of the moodboard. The decision to use a layered background evolved from the idea of depth and growth of information a person can acquire from a beginning towards the endlessness of the sky/universe.
First moodboard
Continuing with the next iterations we had to abstract our previous moodboard to the point where we can take a lot of pictures out and it will still represent the keywords we decided on in the first iteration. Creating a broader horizon was one of the first things to elaborate on to lose the constraints of the earlier moodboards, which had a feeling like they were boxed too much. Another step was to create the branches in a way so they intertwined more to illustrate there are not just three paths to follow, though these were our main focal points, but this development can take many roads to lead you to the knowledge you require.
On the landscape we used to illustrate growth, depth and the different layers of discovering and learning the tree emerged. Consisting of a main branch of pictures from ancient cultures and books it illustrated wisdom and knowledge. The other two branches illustrated community and experience. For you will always learn through the knowledge of other and by combining your knowledge with other and because you will learn from almost all your actions through the experiences you have with everything you come in touch with. All these branches are different ways you grow towards your ultimate knowledge, which can be perceived as endless and therefore is illustrated by the sky with the stars, or as you will, the universe. The man sitting on the side is the outsider looking in to grant a different perspective on how you develop. This illustrated taking a step back and reflect on your own development, which was advised to take out because it did not add to the moodboard.
Model of orange space
The model of the orange space helped us to see what people see when entering orange space. Using a lot of pictures and fitting them into the right perspective even gave insight in where the light comes from and which areas catch your attention or which don’t. From the
The poster template was developed after abstracting the key points of the moodboard through a lot of sketches. Keeping the idea of the tree we decided to abstract this into some lines which illustrate branches and roots. This first representation of the poster template had some flaws in the placing of the text and used a lot of different

angles in the lines which made it a bit chaotic.

Preparing final moodboard When preparing the final moodboard we decided we wanted to keep the clear layers in the background more visible while still making them match better. These layers created the depth we wanted to show from the first keywords we decided on. As preparation a better fitting background was created to plant the next iteration of the tree on.

Knowledge Agoras Abstract The main objective of the project is to explore the possibilities and design an effective exhibition space at the future TU/e library which provides service that enhance research and education at TU/e, for both internal and external people. The space, which can be called a knowledge agora, will consist of, but not limited to, exhibiting, meeting, discussing and sharing points, supported with different types of interactive devices and digitalized content. Students are expected to acquire basic understandings of exhibition design, including constructing themes and content (the message they want to communicate to the audience) and ways to present the content.
Introduction The future organization of TU/e will be an ecosystem of sub-departments, specialized research centers, laboratories and private companies around the campus. In order to promote networking around TU/e, finding synergies, setting up collaborations and building up community, TU/e library will act as the center of gravity. With the use of new technologies we think it will be possible to rethink, reinvent and implement the opportunities linked to the storage and display of enriched scientific output of TU/e research (papers, posters, models, photos, audio, videos, data sets, 3D digital models, …) in order to elicit social connectedness and the emergence of knowledge sharing communities
The outline of the final poster was based on the shape of the tree and the concept of growth. From the first outline some details were refined in order to have a uniform style and merge the content of the poster as the logo, theme. Some aspects s=ll to work out from this template are the use of the logo and create a bound between the idea of the tree and the growth with the logo outline.
Industrial Design
Final Moodboard For the final moodboard we tried to abstract the tree to create more of a feeling everything was intertwined. Fitting the most important original pictures linked better to all the pieces fitting together. Unfortunately the tree was a bit too abstract leaving a lot of parts seen as branches or leaves to float between the images and create a feeling of an explosion or chaos. To create a more even image it would have been wise to take more of the floating pieces of the tree out and create less chaos and just some firm branches.
Space design For the organization inside the space was developed a tripod made from printing tubes. The concept was based in eco - design and “do it yourself” products. The design of the tripod is based in elements as the x, of the logo and the third leg is smaller and “hidden” like the aspect of curiosity.
Final Model The final model was the concept of the display window of a shopping street. Two big cardboards, colored orange, would cover the internal windows on the alley. From these cardboards was cut out the graphic used in the poster of an abstract tree with branches that grow. The visitors would only have the possibility to see through the cut out figure and trigger them to go inside.

In the world of humans each one of us is identified from the other by the name, the personality, the background and many other aspects that makes us unique. In the world of brands, companies, objects and icons the same thing happens, each one of them wants to be recognized from the other. As Industrial designers we should be aware that every client is unique and we should learn how to approach, analyze and recognize which are the aspects that define their identity. During this assignment we had the possibility of analyzing a client, the orange space, the first approach was to define keywords that represented the space identity. After knowing the client we learned how to abstract this information into images and create a composition where all this elements would be recognizable but still create a uniform image. The first time that I composed a mood board I focused in the image and what the image represents. By practicing and discussing even in an informal way with the group I was able to learn how to abstract keywords or concepts into shapes. In the Industrial design Faculty each space contains different projects but all of them are bound by the goals of the theme and the space. With the mood boards we had the possibility of practicing and discussing frequently how this elements were represented and the overall composition of this elements. Abstracting images and information is a skin gained by practicing and being critical of the own work. Having the possibility of working in groups and discussing with the class the progress gave me good insights in how to use colors, scales, forms,...With posters, models and logos we practice how to use create a homogeneous language for the proposal presented for the client. The way the classes were structured and the possibility of working in groups made possible to work efficiently and learn from others point of view. During the exploration of the space I found good inputs for models and the template that were not present at the mood board. Knowing the client is not only analyzing their vision and mission but also the elements around them can be characteristics, as the place were they are located. As in mood boards, images are modified in size, color or position to generate a specific mood, the proposal for a client should fit the client and make them feel unique merging the clients personality and the elements that characterize and make them different from the others.

I really enjoyed the assignment in terms of the hands on approach towards Identity. The start of the assignment asked us to gain insights in identities of companies or even cities by taking pictures of interesting points. When analyzing these pictures and discussing them in class a lot of interesting things came surfaced in respect to how for example colors are used to create an image or even a mood. This information translated to the first more hands on approach of creating a mood board. I never understood the value of a moodboard. The first encounter I had with moodboards was in my first year and it was never clearly explained why and how to create a moodboard. When exploring the different factors of identities and creating different iterations on a moodboard it became more and more clear to me how a moodboard evolves through the different iterations. The hardest part for me was to create the same feeling while leaving pictures from an earlier iteration out. Eventually the key is to step back from your moodboard and still see a collection of explanations which can be linked to the feeling you are trying to describe. Therefore reflection can help you to bring the moodboard closer to showing the key words you had intended in the first place, but this is harder to do by yourself because you placed those pictures there when you feel they are showing the keyword. An outsider might be a better suitor to reflect on your moodboard because if a person who doesn’t know what the moodboard should show still picks out the same key words, you have done a good job. I also gained more knowledge about finding key elements of a certain illustration and how to abstract these. Through sketching a lot of small logos and poster layouts which we based on key parts of the Discovery & Learning logo you start to see how these parts can change and still relate to the Discovery & Learning theme. This definitely helped me to make more sketches for further projects and ideas so I can get the message I want to tell across in different ways through abstracting key elements. Overall I found it a very pleasant assignment. The activities kept me interested and focused on what I needed to learn and I definitely learned a lot about how to analyze and develop identities which will also help me develop my own identity as a designer because I now know better how to reflect on what is important to me and what defines my identity.

Every project is unique but has common ground with other projects. This common ground is a theme where a project is placed in. Each theme has its characteristics that make it different from others but how does each theme distinguish itself from the other themes? The first step in understanding the identity of a theme is knowing what values a theme holds. After analyzing the theme and making keywords a moodboard is created to visualize the theme. This moodboards undergoes several iterations and more knowledge about the theme is gained. A theme can distinguish itself by the use of special, theme related, posters and teasers but also the way the space of the theme is represented during exhibitions. IDentity has taught me useful methods to analyze, interpret, modify and improve identities. I believe that the value and difficulty of making moodboards is underestimated; I began with the illusion that a moodboard is a collection of images. The moodboard undergoes several iterations; during the first iteration I learned the difference between a moodboard and an imageboard. The other iterations revealed the most important aspects of my moodboard, this is also visible in the earlier moodboards but it is hidden between, relatively, less useful images. The next step is to make the moodboard more abstract; only a few images are needed to tell a story. Finally, after having worked only with pictures from magazines, images are imported into Photoshop. Photoshop allows scaling, cutting and adjusting colors. This step towards Photoshop has to be at the end of the iterations because it limits the creativity during the search for images; when using real images I am looking for images that, feelings wise, are connected to the image, or mood, that I have in mind. The iteration process can be infinitely long because there are always aspects that can be improved. I have learned that there is no such thing as a perfect design, a successful design is something that can be achieved; there are always things to improve or do differently. During the abstraction of the moodboard certain aspects of the content can be transformed to use in a template for a poster or teaser. In my case we used the tree element of our moodboard and combined it with the house style of the TU to make a poster template. We used the same tree to create curiosity for projects that are situated in a room that is often visited less than other rooms because of the location. I believe that IDentity should be expanded into a bigger shell; six weeks is not enough to reach the full potential of the methods learned. Each meeting took longer than scheduled because it was so interesting and everybody had valuable inputs. Perhaps presenting the assignment as a module will make it more satisfying.

The key focus of IDentity is the themes within Industrial Design, our case Discovering & Learning, but its methods can also be applied to other matters, such as: company images, promotion design, logo’s and interior design. IDentity inspired me to look at design differently; it taught me to look at the meaning of shapes, colors, fonts, images and the positioning of the previous elements. All these elements together form an identity that I create.
