Flying along with the I-Bee Squad
Another month has gone by, now it’s time for your favorite section of the CommuniQuest; “Flying Along with the I-Bee Squad”! Where we’ll talk about the main things that have been going on inside IVI DMC Enterprises. Are you ready? Let's hop right into it. First, we met up with Chris Herzberg, Business Development Director with ITA Group. We took our time to thank them for their trust and long-term partnership. They confirmed that our destinations are ready to serve their clients, and we couldn’t be happier! Page 4
Then, our associate from Puerto Vallarta and Riviera Nayarit, Jaime Nelo, received his new certification, CIS (Certified Incentive Specialist). It was given to him upon the successful completion of an online exam. The exam can be taken following a two-day, in-person workshop or by registering for the CIS Online and reviewing the workshop materials at your own pace. We are really proud of Jaime! Thanks for your hard work and your commitment to making our clients look GREAT!
Even though we are already meeting up with clients & industry allies, we are still having lots of online meetings. This month we had a very productive meeting with our good friends Dennis Mulcahy & Philip Cochrane from iCentiviz.
Page 5
We also had a great online meeting with our friends Kurt Paben and Marty MacKay from Host Global, where we discussed a lot of new strategies that we will be implementing together, now that we are part of the Host Global Alliance.
Later in the month, we visited our friends at Presidente InterContinental Cancun. They showed us their renovations, and we checked out all of the new protocols that they have been implementing to keep our mutual guests safe. We had a great conversation and a delicious lunch. We can’t wait to keep working together for many years to come. Thanks for helping us make our clients look GREAT!
Page 6
Also, our IVI DMC Panama team joined Jose Barrios and Michael Jaén Joseph from Bern Hotels & Resorts Panama for a business brunch and tour of the properties. Thanks for your hospitality; we are happy to team up with your resorts, always ready to make our mutual clients look GREAT!
There’s nothing like catching up with an old friend, and this month we were glad to receive Melissa DeLeon, President at MTI Events at our beautiful Riviera Maya in the Mexican Caribbean. Thank you for your trust and partnership for over 34 years. It was great to see you in person once again! That was all for this month. We hope you enjoyed this new edition of “Flying Along with the I-Bee Squad”. Stay tuned for the next edition!

Los Cabos
Popular Sporting Events The Baja 1000 is a Mexican off-road motorsport race held each year on the Baja California Peninsula. The race was founded by Ed Pearlman in 1967 and is one of the most prestigious off-road races in the world, featuring the best competitors from all over the United States and as many as 30 total countries. The iconic SCORE Baja 1000, which starts in Ensenada and finish in La Paz, always attract racing extremists from around the world The Baja 1000 allows classes for Pro and Sportsman cars, trucks, UTVs, motorcycles and quads, to compete on the same course. Off-road racing is alive and well in Baja with almost 50 years of colorful history. As long as the local governments and landowners are willing to host these Baja racing adventures, we will hopefully have many years more to come. This year is expected to take place from November 15 to 20th.

Ironman
One of the most challenging sporting events on the planet. It combines a 2.4mile swim with 112 miles of cycling and a full marathon. Renowned athletes from all over the globe will gather in Los Cabos to compete for a qualifying slot to the Ironman World Championship. In Los Cabos, the difficulty level is doubled! Competitors must face the intensity of the Pacific Ocean when swimming, and the winds while cycling along the mountain roads, as well as the hot sun and semi-desert landscape during the marathon. Not to mention, all of the physical challenges at hand. A wide swath of the Baja area is covered, including the run portion in the Hotel Zone in San Jose del Cabo, the swim section at Palmilla Beach, and the biking portion spanning from Cabo San Lucas through the Tourist Corridor. Family, friends, and tourists alike come to cheer on the hardcore athletes as they try to outdo each other in what is quickly becoming the leading triathlon of the world.}
Los Cabos Tennis Open This year will be very special for the tournament as the Cabo Sports Complex will be inaugurated. This venue has a unique concept because it aims to become one of the musts to carry out sports and entertainment events in the country.
The Los Cabos Tournament is an official ATP tennis tournament in the ATP World Tour 250 category. It was played for the first time from August 8 to 14, 2016 on a hard surface. 28 singles players and 16 doubles pairs participate in this event, which makes it the fifth-largest in the 39 events worldwide in this category.
Page 10
The Mifel Tennis Open trophy, presented by Cinemex, is considered one of the most beautiful thanks to the detail of the Huichol artists, who embody part of their culture and Mexico in it. This year is expected to take place from July 19 -24.
Sport fishing Ernest Hemingway traveled to Baja California Sur to witness and experience sport fishing first-hand in Los Cabos. Many of the world's leading sport fishing events and fishing tournaments take place here. The best competitors battle each other to catch the largest marlin, tuna, and dorado. Los Cabos is host to six prominent fishing tournaments: • Stars & Stripes tournament in June • Los Cabos Billfish Tournament in October • Cabo Tuna Jackpot in November • Three local tournaments on the Bisbee's circuit • Bisbee's East Cape • Los Cabos Offshore • Bisbee's Black & Blue in October. This is the largest, known as the richest fishing tournament in the world, with prizes exceeding $4 million USD for the largest specimens of black, blue and striped marlin.
Page 11
Puerto Vallarta & Riviera Nayarit International Sailing Fishing Tournament In the year 1956, a group of friends from Vallarta met with the Engineer Juan De Dios De La Torre, who, motivated by the experience of having obtained a first fishing spot in New Zealand, convinced them to organize a competition to attract fishermen from other parts of the Republic so they could verify the abundance of fishing in the Bay. These friends, who were the founding partners, all of them businessmen and visionary people, pioneers of various businesses, (three of them were Municipal Presidents), believed that sportfishing could be the trigger for tourists to visit the region. Since the first tournament we have had participants from the United States, so from 1957, it was ambitiously named "International Sailfish Fishing Tournament". Page 12
Hand in hand with our strongest sponsor (Mexicana de Aviación), Puerto Vallarta was promoted touristically as a fishing destination, this tournament was the first effort to promote this city and continues to be its main objective. This Club wants to put Puerto Vallarta on the international fishing map, along with other destinations such as Hawaii or Los Cabos, which we have nothing to envy. Sport Fishing leaves an important spill of wealth, well above other tourist attractions in Puerto Vallarta, this Fishing tourism repeats its visits according to the seasons of different species since fishing can be practiced at any time.
Stand Up and Paddleboard Championship
in Riviera Nayarit
Those who love the idea of c onquering the sea on a board know that Paddleboard and Stand Up Paddle (SUP) are modern sports derived from surfing in which consist of standing on a board and instead of letting a wave take you, you sail as you wish with an oar. These sports are capturing more and more fans, and have given way to the International Surfing Association (ISA) who brings the Fourth World Stand Up Paddle and Paddleboard Championship for the first time to Mexico, in the Riviera Nayarit. Page 13
International Tournament Of ‘‘La Charreria’’ The beautiful beach city, Puerto Vallarta, located in the state of Jalisco, also plays an important part in this show. This city is also the home of the Charros National and International Championships, which are held in February of each year. Only the best performers attend this event to showcase their skills in a series of competitions that test the equestrian power of each participant.
Page 14
Charrería is what Jaripeo or Equestrian arts are called in Mexico. Its origin in Mexico dates back to the times when the Spanish arrived in the new world, bringing with them many types of food, textiles, and animals, among which came horses. The use of these was restricted, initially, only for the elite, until authorization was requested so that the ranchers could use them since they were necessary to take the cattle out to pasture. It was from this moment on that the horse became an element of common use, thus creating this culture of "Mexican cowboys", which now glows with an inherent brilliance. Today, one of the most recognized places for practicing charrería as a serious activity is in the state of Jalisco.
Mexican Caribbean Popular Sporting Events
Crossing Cancun Isla-Mujeres
Cancun and Riviera Maya are known worldwide for their heavenly beaches with white sand and their sea with multiple shades of blue. However, few are aware of the variety of world-class sporting events that this beautiful destination offers. Proudly, each year we host a large number of cultural, artistic, sporting, recreational, and business events that capture visitors from all over the world. Some of them take place in the impressive natural settings that make the Mexican Caribbean unique.
Complete crossing (approximately 10 km) or one mile (3.8km). The Cancun-Isla Mujeres Crossing welcomes competitors from around the world where they have the opportunity to compete alongside Olympic swimming medalists and world record-holder athletes. This competition has become a tradition in the Mexican Caribbean and has been held consecutively in the last 14 years with more than 700 swimmers from all over the Mexican Republic and other countries participating. It is generally held in the month of May.
Open Water Marathon “Ruta del Arrecife” The picturesque and quiet fishing village of Puerto Morelos is home to La Ruta del Arrecife, which is an open water marathon and takes place in February—in 2020 it celebrated its 15th career. It is an event that attracts hundreds of visitors and strengthens the local economy, it is endorsed by the Mexican Swimming Federation (FMN), this competition is also selective for the FMN National Open Water Championship. The reef route allows competitors to swim in the second largest in the world. Enjoying the marine life that inhabits these waters during this competition is an experience that can only be lived here.
Page 16
Challenge Cancun-Chichen Itzá A cycling route of approximately 212 km, leaving from Cancun, arriving in Valladolid in Yucatan and ending in one of the Wonders of the Modern World, Chichen Itza. Approximately 250 participants from various states of the Mexican Republic face a challenge that goes beyond physical capacities. This event takes place in June. In 2019, its ninth edition was held. In 2020 it was canceled due to the COVID-19 contingency.
Cancun Triathlon This sporting event takes place in the Cancun Hotel Zone. With categories that feature sprint, children, super sprint, and paratriathlete. A competition tailor-made for athletes starting in triathlon. Page 17
Xplor Bravest Race This race is a challenge of physical and mental endurance for runners in an environment of incredible natural scenery that combines tests of strength and ability. It is a 5-kilometer journey where participants will test their bravery and skill to the finish to become The Bravest. The race takes place between the dense jungle, underground rivers, caves and cenotes, which increases the challenge and creates fantastic landscapes to show bravery. An activity to show courage, skill and have fun with music, food and a great atmosphere.
Xel-Ha Triathlon The Triathlon Xel-Ha is part of the national series of triathlon competitions in Mexico. With sprint, olympic and only rookie categories. It allows the most experienced competitors and those new to this sport to enjoy one of the most beautiful places in Mexico. This event brings together more than 2,000 athletes and families to enjoy the magnificent combination of sport, nature, and a great atmosphere of friendship and family. In 2019, the 11th edition of this competition was held, which usually takes place in November. The activities of the National Triathlon Championship are divided into 4 categories: Olympic Triathlon (Men and Women), Sprint, Children, and "Only Beginners" (women).
Ironman Cozumel One of the most important long-distance triathlon competitions in the world is the Ironman. Cozumel has been one of the venues for this competition for several years. Its great natural beauty allows competitors to enjoy a great marine diversity while swimming 3.8 km in the Caribbean Sea; a 180 km bike ride; and 42 km running in his walker. Enjoy one of the most beautiful islands in Mexico with its white sands and its fantastic turquoise tones in one of the most important sporting events. Cozumel Island is getting ready to host this competition of international level in the month of November where the eyes of the world focus on the beautiful landscapes of the Mexican Caribbean. Page 19
PGA Tour Mayakoba Golf Classic
International Marathon Cancun The Cancun’s International Marathon is one of the most important and competitive sporting events of the year in the city. Competitors from different countries participate in distances of 5 km, 10 km, half marathon 21 km, and full marathon 42 km. The route of this event allows you to enjoy the Cancun Hotel Zone while running. It is the second of its longest-running type in all of Mexico. December is by tradition the date on which this extraordinary event is hosted.
Mayakoba Golf Classic made golf history by being the first PGA TOUR event to be played outside of the United States and Canada. A pioneer in Mexico, Mayakoba Golf Classic celebrates its fourteenth edition this year. Held annually in November, the tournament features 132 professional golfers participating in four rounds of stroke competition at the Greg Norman-designed El Camaleón Golf Club in Mayakoba, Riviera Maya-Cancun, Mexico. In 2020, the 14th consecutive edition took place, the Mayakoba Golf Classic 2020 will once again serve as an incredible opportunity to spread worldwide the beauties of Mexico, the Riviera Maya and Cancun, as well as to provide an incredible economic impact for Quintana Roo and its touristic destinations.
Page 20
Since its founding in 2007, the Mayakoba Golf Classic has generated more than $ 2.9 million in donations to a wide variety of philanthropic organizations locally, nationally and internationally. Each year, the tournament enjoys global television coverage, reaching more than 220 countries and territories with a potential reach of more than 900 million households.
Fishing tournaments The warm waters of the Caribbean coast of Mexico are always ready to offer a welcoming hospitality to those who enjoy sport fishing. There are prestigious events in which competitors, experienced and amateurs, compete for various prizes, most of them in cash.
In front of the Riviera Maya, there are fabulous varieties for recreational fishing and in magnificent quantities, such as Blue and White Marlin, Sailfish, Dorado (Mahi-Mahi), Tuna, Mackerel, and Wahoo, which is why the Mexican Caribbean is one of the favorite places of the true expert of deep-sea fishing. This is not surprising, because on the eastern coast of Quintana Roo there is the second largest set of coral reefs on the planet, impressive for its beauty and extremely important for the vast number of underwater species that coexist there. Participants are asked to follow the catch and release policy to help preserve fish populations. Throughout the year, important tournaments are held in Cancun, Playa del Carmen, Puerto Morelos, and Isla Mujeres, generally in the months of April, May, and June, which is the biggest fishing season. Page 21
One event that offers the best of both worlds is the Costa Rica International Marathon, which began in 1996 and was designed to test even the most hardcore runners through the hilly terrain of the capital city of San Jose. The race covers the streets of San Jose from La Sabana Park toward the airport, giving runners a chance to wind through 26 miles of an urban jungle landscape. The event, which typically takes place in December, is open to visitors of various ages and skill levels. Wheelchair-bound participants can also take part in the marathon. Additionally, many people line the streets to see some of the top runners from around the country test their abilities on a demanding course. Page 22
Costa Rica
Marathons
Bike Races Bike races are also extremely popular sporting events that take place throughout the year in Costa Rica. One such race, the Ruta de los Conquistadores Mountain Bike Race, is the largest mountain bike event in the country. Spanning more than 240 miles of trails from coast to coast, the four-day event is a stage race that has time limits for each leg of the trip. However, those who do not finish in the allotted time can still continue and complete the race. Dozens of fans line the trails to witness the impressive athletes competing in this race, which generally takes place in October or November.
2021 FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup The 2020 FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup, later postponed and renamed as the 2021 FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup before its cancellation, was originally going to be the 10th edition of the FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup, the biennial international women's youth football championship contested by the under-20 national teams of the member associations of FIFA, since its inception in 2002 as the FIFA U-19 Women's World Championship (the age limit was raised from 19 to 20 in 2008). The tournament was originally scheduled to be held in August/September 2020 by Costa Rica and Panama. However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, FIFA announced on 3 April 2020 that the tournament would be postponed and rescheduled. On 12 May 2020, FIFA announced that the tournament would be held between 20 January – 6 February 2021, subject to further monitoring. In July 2020, due to COVID-19 concerns with the highest cases and deaths of all Central America, Panama backed out from co-hosting leaving Costa Rica the solo host. On 17 November 2020, FIFA announced that the 2020 edition of the tournament would be cancelled. Instead, Costa Rica was appointed as host of the next edition of the tournament in 2022.
Cuba The Varadero Golf Club will host the first edition of the event, named LX-Mongolia-Cuba and whose celebration is scheduled for April or May 2021 at the Varadero golf club, the only one in Cuba that has a golf course with 18 holes and it stretches along a narrow 3.5 kilometer strip.
Golf Course Characteristics - 18 holes; Par 72; 5 Par 5 and 5 Par 3, the remaining 8 are Par 4 - 6,269 linear meters of travel between the First Tee or exit and Green 18
Three styles of golf architectures are combined: • "Classic design", wide fairways bordered by trees, wide greens and little protection. • Challenging design or "target golf ", modern style with narrow fairways and highly protected greens, surrounded by sand traps and lakes. The Varadero countryside has an almost unique peculiarity in the world: salt-water lakes. • Design "links", holes located next to the sea, which follow the silhouette of the coast, including the sea as one more obstacle in the game. Page 24
The golf course is divided into two areas with defined characteristics. A first-round from holes 1 to 9, which can be considered somewhat simpler, and from 10 to 18 that stands out for its individual complexities. In the opinion of professionals in the field and expert players, the design achieved is of quality, allowing at the same time an “accessible” route for beginners and a real challenge for professional players. The golf course Club House has a reception at the Caddy House including Pro Shop and Snack Bar. They have facilities and experience in organizing tournaments.
Page 25
Marabana Marathon The great event of Cuban sports already has a date. The 2021 Havana Marathon will take place on November 21. It will be a very special event, as it will celebrate its 35th edition. After a 2020 marked by Covid19, and in which the race had to be held virtually on November 22, the streets of the ‘Wonder City’ will once again be the protagonists. The route of the Havana Marathon, starting and finishing in front of the monumental Capitol, is the only Cuban circuit officially certified as an international race registered in the AIMS.

Interview with
The Experts!
The intention of Interview with The Expert is to get you closer to some of the hospitality industry leaders and learn from them their objectives, vision, and expectations. During this month we had the privilege and opportunity to interview our good friend Lorena Armengual, CEO of Celebracion. Let’s jump right into it! It was a pleasure talking and learning about them while they shared their passions, main business aspects, and expectations. We hope you enjoy them too.
Lorena Armengual CEO of Celebracion
Lorena’s favorite quote is “Love the life that you live”. She thinks that sometimes we forget to appreciate everything we have and that we have to live our lives with love, and love the life we’ve been given. Lorena's favorite book is “El Amor en Tiempos de Cólera” by Gabriel Garcia Marquez. She received this book from her husband, and then from a friend. She usually doesn’t like the movies adaptations from books, but in this special case, she thinks that the movie is incredible. She even has a quote from the book written on a wall of her living room.
She truly loves the wedding and events business. When she was working in a hotel, she got to meet a couple that used to visit Cancún every year for their anniversary. By the time Lorena met them, they were celebrating their 14th wedding anniversary, they felt as if that special hotel was their second home. Sadly, the next year, his wife passed away, but she asked her husband to go one last time to this hotel with her ashes. Lorena thinks this was an incredible experience. Very sad, very emotional, but at the same time, it was a very inspiring moment.
Lorena shared that the most important part of the wedding business is to listen to your clients and try to please all of their wishes. Also, finding the best venues for the couple, which was more difficult a few years back, because there wasn’t a wide variety of venues in the destination, as we have today We also talked about the new trends of the wedding industry. Lorena says that every good wedding planner has to know all of the new world trends and that she’s lucky to have a great team, which is always updated. People these days have access to a lot of information, and now every great idea that someone has, many people want to replicate it, even if it's from the other side of the world.
Then we asked Lorena if she had organized a hybrid event, and she told us that she has and that they’ve been doing it for several years now. It is usually done for specific family members that couldn't travel for some reasons and since it’s getting so popular nowadays, Celebracion is already some steps ahead. Lastly, Lorena shared some suggestions for couples who are planning a wedding. She told us that some hotels offer wedding services and that even though they are professionals, they don't always take care of all of the details. So a professional wedding planner is always required for you to have an unforgettable event. We’re sure that all of this information will be very helpful for many who have an interest in the wedding industry, and we want to thank Lorena Armengual for this great interview! Meet DQuest DMO Team
Lory Acevedo
Regional Business Director West Coast USA Lory discovered her passion for the hospitality industry over 25 years ago. In 1994, being a Program Manager for a DMC in San Diego, she learned the value and importance of a good partnership between a DMC and its clients. She administered many programs for companies like CocaCola, Ford/ Maritz, Roche Labs, AMEX, to name a few. She was later invited by an important Pharma client to join the team as a Travel Director and that’s where her love for travel and world experiences grew even more. In 1999, after her TD adventures, she became a Certified Meeting Planner. This role gave her the opportunity to not only plan corporate meetings and incentives but also showcase the destinations and cultures in other parts of the world.
In 2011, becoming a Freelance Independent Meeting Planner opened up the doors to working with some of the Top Meeting and Incentive Management Companies in the US. Planning and executing high-end events in over 50 different countries and working with hundreds of DMC’s around the world has enriched Lory’s expertise in knowing what it takes to plan and execute first-class meetings and incentives from both sides. Being a very proud Mexican has always been a big influence in her need to share the “Latin Heritage” with others. She really lives and feels her grandfather’s saying “Como Mexico No Hay Dos” but changes it up a little, “Como Latino America No Hay Dos!” Lory has 3 children and 2 grandchildren (soon to be 3). Her family is her #1 passion, her work is #2 and #3 is living life to its fullest. Traveling is her favorite hobby, but she also enjoys sports, cooking, art, crafts, and searching for beautiful sunrises and sunsets.
We have exciting news to share with you. We have recently joined the Hosts Global Alliance of DMCs, and we couldn't be happier!
