Craggy Gardens Drive north along the Blue Ridge Parkway and you’ll stumble upon a breathtaking view of the mountains this region is known for. Craggy Gardens — located at milepost 364.4 — offers crisp mountain air, great hiking trails, rhodedendrons as far as the eye can see, and a picnic area where you can relax and eat your fill before climbing atop the Craggy Pinnacle. With an elevation of 5,892 feet, The Pinnacle presents a gorgeous, panoramic view of the rolling Appalachian mountains. The trails that surround the stunning overlook take you through tunnels of

rambling rhododendron, gnarled sweet birch trees, and wildflowers. Choose between Craggy Pinnacle Trail, Craggy Gardens Trail (both accessible from the Visitors Center) and the Douglas Falls Trail (accessible from the Mountain to Sea Trail). The combination of high altitude, cool weather, and exposed rocky outcrops creates the necessary habitat for a number of rare and endangered plants. Craggy Gardens has been recognized as a Natural Heritage Area and has been recommended as a National Natural Landmark. For more information, visit blueridgeparkway.org, and search ‘Craggy Gardens’.

Linville Gorge The 12 mile gorge known as the "Grand Canyon of the East" is one of the North Carolina’s largest natural wonders. The cliffs surrounding the gorge are 2,000 feet high, giving visitors great views of Hawksbill and Table Rock Mountains. Hikers can find many access points along the gorge, all of which descend steeply towards the river and connect to the 12 mile trail that runs the length of the natural feature. The gorge is great for fisherman, hunters, hikers, and adventurers alike. There’s something for everyone here. If you enjoy camping, you’ll need a permit during the popular season. Permits

| 8 | Summertime Guide 5/20/2014

need to be acquired May 1 through October 31. For the adventurer, there are numerous caves and rock formations few people have laid eyes on due to the determination and skill needed to access these North Carolina gems. From Marion, take US 221 N to the intersection of NC 183. Turn right onto 183, and continue to NC 181. Turn South on NC 181 for 3 miles to Forest Service Road 210 (Gingercake Road). Turn right onto FS Road 210, and at the first fork, turn left.

Mt. Pisgah Mount Pisgah’s spectacular views, hiking trails, camping and the Mount Pisgah Inn make this area a popular destination for visitors along the Blue Ridge Parkway. The mountain and thousands of surrounding acres were originally purchased by industrialist George Washington Vanderbilt in the late 1800s while building the Biltmore Estate in Asheville. Vanderbilt used the property as a private hunting retreat for family and friends. For generations, Pisgah has been a popular mountain retreat for travelers. The

campground, located in Flat Laurel Gap, (milepost 408) is the highest, coolest, and most secluded on the Parkway. 70 tent and 70 RV sites and shower facilities are available. Lake Jocassee The mountain spring-fed Lake Jocassee encompassed by the Jocassee Gorges, waterfalls accessible only by boat and some of the best South Carolina trout fishing are all part of the allure of Devils Fork State Park. The land around 7,500-acre Lake Jocassee remains mostly undeveloped and the only public access point to the lake is through Devils Fork. Four mountain streams and several waterfalls feed into the lake, making it cooler than others and a great South Carolina trout fishing spot. Plus, the unusually clear water of Lake Jocassee is a haven for scuba divers and swimmers. During the spring months, hikers on the two trails are treated to sightings of the endangered Oconee bell wildflower. The lake was built in 1973 along with Lake Keowee, its sister lake, as part of the Keowee-Toxaway project. The dam on Lake Jocassee, which is 385 feet high, impounds four rivers, and the discharge becomes the Keowee River arm of Lake Keowee. The lake is eight miles long and covers 7,565 acres. Devils Fork State Park - located just off of SC Highway 11, provides about anything you can think of for a great lake trip. There are several boat ramps, campgrounds, and hiking trails. Devils Fork State park is also the starting point of the famous Foothills Trail. If you visit Lake Jocassee, you should definitely stop by Hoyetts store on the way. Jackson’s Western Store

1938, a time of when a seeing a horse drawn carriage wasn’t an odd thing in downtown Asheville NC. This is the year that Stonewall Jackson opens the doors to Jackson Trading Co. Located street side in a quite brick building near the train tracks, selling dry goods and clothing. With the two sons entering the business, expansion was in the future. Thomas Jackson and Julian Jackson broke down walls and took the Jackson Trading Co to larger heights with feed & seed, an excellent leather repair shop, harness making shop and western clothing that was unheard of in this region of America. After some years had passed the space became scarce in the brick building that housed Jackson Trading Co. so on a voyage for room and comfort. Thomas happens to come upon a piece of land on the west side of Asheville and with cowboy intuition and southern grit we broke ground in spring of’73. Growing from a small harness shop into a western clothing premier store took a lot of combined effort | 62 | Summertime Guide 5/20/2014

of the third generation of Jacksons to step in their fathers shoes. John Jackson (son of Julian) took the harness/ leather shop to new national heights with custom hand-made leather goods that some had thought to be non-existent. Charles Jackson (son of Thomas) became a staple of the saddle/tack business and grew into a sought after store in the south east. By summer of ’93 space inside of Jackson Trading Co was getting tight and desperate. The following summer we knocked some walls down and doubled our size to the store that customers enjoy today. With the future in-sight Jackson Trading Co made a change to Jackson’s Western Store to reflect the upcoming JacksonsWesternStore.com venture. Jackson’s is one of the oldest family owned businesses left in Asheville NC. With a past as colorful as its future, Jackson’s has become a common name amongst horse enthusiasts around the world. From all of us at Jackson’s Western Store, we thank you and hope to see you come back soon.
