OVERVIEW Every year the NC Mountain State Fair showcases the best western North Carolina has to offer. The mountain heritage and local talents on display at the fair are what makes it a unique and enjoyable event.

It’s that delicate balance of sustaining the well-worn and treasured traditions of the fair and introducing a few fresh attractions that has made the NC Mountain State Fair a destination for families for the last 21 years. | 6 | NC Mountain State Fair Guide mountainfair.org

ATT E N D A N C E A record 191,596 people attended the fair in 2013.

F OO D For many, the fair means one thing: food. Lots and lots of food, often deep fried, on a stick or deep fried and on a stick. Fair-goers marvel each year at the various concoctions, returning to old favorites and trying new treats.

Can you say fried pineapple on a stick? Or pork chop on a stick? Then there’s deepfried Milky Way bar on a stick, cheesecake on a stick, fried peanut butter and jelly sandwich on a stick and don’t forget about the fried pickle on a stick. It seems like everything at the fair just tastes better on a stick.

E MP LO Y M E N T The NC Mountain State Fair has approximately 400 paid employees for the 10 day duration of the fair.

E NT E R TA IN M E N T Over 100 acts perform at the fairs’ numerous free entertainment venues.

ATT R A C T IO N S Drew Expositions features more than 40 carnival rides and numerous games of skill. Kiddyland offers 30+ carnival rides for pint-sized fair visitors.

AGR IC ULT UR E & C O M P E T IT IO N Over $240,000 in competition premiums is available in 2015. Livestock exhibitors compete for ribbons and cash in hundreds of competitions.

The Expo Building showcases Arts and Crafts, Photos, Quilts and Hand Sewn Clothing, Cooking Competitions, Wood Carvings and many other Competitive Entry items.

FAC ILIT Y IN F O R M AT IO N The WNC Agricultural Center is owned by the State of North Carolina and operated by the NC Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services. The facility and the NC Mountain State Fair are completely self-supported and receive no appropriated tax funds for operational expenses.

The NC Mountain State Fairs’ mission is to educate and involve our guests by providing a world-class agricultural showcase that is innovative, entertaining and fun.

D I REC T IO N S: From Asheville, take I-26 East to Exit #40 (Asheville Airport Exit). Turn right at top of exit ramp onto Highway NC 280. After the 2nd stoplight, turn left into Gate 6 or 7.

From South Carolina on I-26 West toward North Carolina, after you enter North Carolina, take exit #40 (Asheville Airport Exit). Turn left at top of exit ramp onto NC 280. After the 3rd stop light, turn left into Gate 6.

F R EE PA R KIN G : FREE parking is available on fairground property. Parking is located on Highway 280 at Gate 6.

There is handicap parking provided for those with valid tags next to the ticket booths at Entrance A. For the McGough Arena handicap parking is near Entrance E. Wheelchair, scooter, and stroller rentals are available at two locations: Entrance A and inside Entrance “E” at Blue Barn.

[ ENTERTAINMENT LINEUP ] B OJ AN GL E S S E A L I ON SP LA SH The sea lions will amaze the crowd as they balance balls, shoot hoops, dance, perform handstands and show their pretty smiles. This is the only show in the U.S. to feature both California and South American sea lions.

The idea of the Sea Lion Splash originated when Squalus started taking in beached sea lions who were unable to be returned to the wild due to age or injuries and unable to provide food for themselves. Squalus provides a permanent home for these sea lions for the rest of their lives.

H AN S E N ’S S P E C TAC ULA R A C R O B AT IC SE N SAT IO N S An Amazing family thrill show with aerial acts over 30 feet high!

The show includes incredible juggling, trampoline, skating, and cloudswing acts. Shane has been in show business since a young age, roller-skating at the age of three in the “Rolling Diamonds” act with his parents. For years Alicia performed with the Flying Redpaths and was trained by her father Mike Redpath. Now their three girls are following in their footsteps as a new generation of circus performers is born.

The show consists of 12 miniature stallions, a beautiful Freisian from Holland and a black Arabian. C H AI N S AW AR T I S T JO EY R O WE Follow the buzz of a chainsaw and you’ll find Joey Rowe carving out fun at the fair. With chain saw roaring and chips flying, Joey Rowe’s precision and skill quickly transforms a log into a true work of art.

Throughout the day, a number of demonstrations are offered.

Ranging from molasses making, blacksmithing, pottery, colorful needlework to basket weaving – questions, from all ages, are encouraged.
