[ general information ]
O v erview Every year the NC Mountain State Fair showcases the best western North Carolina has to offer. The mountain heritage and local talents on display at the fair are what makes it a unique and enjoyable event. It’s that delicate balance of sustaining the well-worn and treasured traditions of the fair and introducing a few fresh attractions that has made the NC Mountain State Fair a destination for families for the last 21 years. Agricultural fairs are the windows that the public views agriculture through, and more importantly they provide opportunity for them to experience it firsthand. 2 0 14 Them e “There’s No Time Like Fair Time” At t en da n c e A record 191,596 people attended the fair in 2013.

F oo d For many, the fair means one thing: food. Lots and lots of food, often deep fried, on a stick or deep fried and on a stick. Fair-goers marvel each year at the various concoctions, returning to old favorites and trying new treats. Can you say fried pineapple on a stick? Or pork chop on a stick? Then there’s deepfried Milky Way bar on a stick, cheesecake on a stick, fried peanut butter and jelly sandwich on a stick and don’t forget about the fried pickle on a stick. It seems like everything at the fair just tastes better on a stick. E mp lo ym e n t The NC Mountain State Fair has approximately 400 paid employees for the 10 day duration of the fair. E n t e r ta in m e n t Over 100 acts perform at the fairs’ numerous free entertainment venues.

[ entertainment lineup ] B oj an gl e s S e a L i on Sp la sh The sea lions will amaze the crowd as they balance balls, shoot hoops, dance, perform handstands and show their pretty smiles. This is the only show in the U.S. to feature both California and South American sea lions. The idea of the Sea Lion Splash originated when Squalus started taking in beached sea lions who were unable to be returned to the wild due to age or injuries and unable to provide food for themselves. Squalus provides a permanent home for these sea lions for the rest of their lives. S t i lt P up p e t s Welcome to the source of Legendary Animals. Let them inspire you with their silhouette and multicolored costumes. With elegance they move around above the ground, blowing a wind of imagination with their acrobatics. enjoy a fair discount advance tickets now available
The N.C. Mountain State Fair will return to the Western N.C. Agricultural Center for another run of family fun Sept. 5-14, and advance tickets are now available. “There’s no time like fair time, and with savings of $2 on admission tickets and 50 percent on ride tickets, there is no time like right now to buy advance tickets,” said fair manager Matt Buchanan. Advance tickets are available through Sept. 4 at the WNC Agricultural Center, WNC Farmers Market and area Ingles stores. Advance tickets are not available online this year; however, additional Ingles ticket locations have been added in the mountains and upstate South Carolina. Advance tickets are $6 for adults 13-64, and $2 for children 6-12 and seniors ages 65 and older. Groups with 30 or more people can purchase advance tickets for $5 per person. Ride tickets are available in advance for $7.50 for a sheet of 12 tickets. Family Fun Packs are also available for $35. The cost includes five admission tickets,

tickets for four rides and food coupons for a selection of fair vendors. “With more than 100 acts performing throughout the fair, we’re one of the best entertainment values in the area,” Buchanan said. “Buying in advance or as a group makes it even more affordable.” This year’s entertainment lineup will feature a mix of new attractions and traditional favorites. Stilt Puppets, a roaming band of acrobatic stilt walkers, will make its fair debut. Other new acts include illusionists Josh Knotts and Lea, dog stunt show K9s in Flight, and naturalist Carlton Burke. Sea Lion Splash, which debuted in 2013, will return for another year of playful antics. In addition, there will be live music on the Heritage Stage, racing pigs at the Hogway Speedway, newborn calves in the Mooternity Ward, and other fan favorites during the fair’s 10-day run. More information is available at mountainfair.org or by calling 828-687-1414.

mountain state fair offers ways to save
Purchasing your tickets in advance is the best way to save on admission and ride tickets to the 2014 N.C. Mountain State Fair. But even if you wait until the gates open Friday, Sept. 5, there are still plenty of ways to save through special promotions and discount days. The popular Friday Night Frenzy is back for another year, offering fairgoers admission and unlimited rides for $20 on Friday nights. The promotion is available Sept. 5 and 12 from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. Drew Exposition will offer three additional unlimited-ride days during the fair. During those days, visitors can purchase a voucher good for unlimited rides throughout the day for $20. The cost does not include gate admission. The unlimited-ride vouchers are available for all visitors Sept. 8 and 11. On Tuesday, Sept. 9, the unlimited-ride vouchers are only available for children ages 12 and under. 34

On Wednesday, Sept. 10, the fair will host its annual Ingles Day. Visitors who bring five cans of Laura Lynn brand food to the fair will receive free gate admission. All food collected during the event will benefit the MANNA Food Bank. The nonprofit works with more than 230 partner agencies to provide food to 16 Western North Carolina communities. In addition to these opportunities, fair organizers also are offering two opportunities for students and seniors to receive free admission to the fair. Students in grades K-12 can receive free gate admission on Friday, Sept. 5, until 6 p.m. Seniors, 65 and older, can receive free gate admission all day on Friday, Sept. 12. The 2014 N.C. Mountain State Fair runs Sept. 5 - 12 at the WNC Agricultural Center.

Bojangles is a proud sponsor of the “Sea Lion Splash.” An exciting and one of a kind traveling sea lion exhibit. Squalus Inc. was first established when Marco Peters began adopting a providing a home for sea lions who were unable to survive in the wild because of sickness, age, or injuries. Marco’s passion for sea lions led him to educate the public on the need to coexist with these special marine mammals in harmony. Thus, began the journey of the “Sea Lion Splash” which now travels all over North America entertaining thousands of people each year. This unique show is truly one of a kind, being the only sea lion show which features both California sea lions and South American sea lions. This incredible show features sea lions performing entertaining and educational

tricks including handstands, balancing balls, flips, dancing, smiling, and even teaching kids how to recycle! When the Sea Lion Splash exhibit is not on the road, the sea lion stars enjoy the life of leisure at their permanent home in Myakka City, Florida. It is where the animals spend most their days playing and socializing with each other and their trainers. This is a very important role as individuals, as well as a unit. They love the comfort of their own home as they enjoy spacious pools and lots of care and attention. For the guests that like to get up close and personal with the sea lions, there is a unique photo opportunity that is available after most presentations.
