Plan Your Fall Foliage Road Trip Come autumn, thousands of motorists take to the highways and backroads to experience the ever-changing landscape made beautiful by leaves changing colors. Fall foliage road trips make for a fun way to spend a weekend afternoon. With cameras in hand and provisions at the ready, motorists can make the most of their next fall foliage road trip. KNOW WHEN TO GO. Learn the best times of the year to see the peak leaf colors. Mountainous regions and many located in northern latitudes will see changes in leaf color earlier than other regions. Drivers living in certain areas of Canada, regions of the Rocky Mountains or in particular parts of New England can expect to witness leaves changing color as early as September, while much of the midwest can expect peak color in mid- to lateOctober. Southern regions may not see leaves change color until November. AIM FOR A WEEKDAY. Many people plan fall foliage road trips on the weekend. These “leafers” or “peepers,” as they’re sometimes referred to, flood normally empty rural areas and can easily cause traffic jams. Schedule your own trip for a weekday so you can avoid most of the crowds and enjoy a more serene environment for hiking excursions or countryside visits. BOOK ACCOMMODATIONS EARLY. If you plan to stay overnight, book your trip as early as possible and don’t be surprised if costs are high. Autumn is not only a peak | 6 | IWANNA FALL FUN GUIDE 9/16/2014
time for leaf color changes, but also it’s a prime time for vacationers interested in comfortable temperatures and amazing scenery, so autumn lodging rates may be equal to or exceed the rates charged during the height of summer vacation season. Verify room rates and openings well in advance if you have your heart set on staying in prime leaf color country. EMPLOY A FEW TRICKS OF THE PHOTOGRAPHY TRADE. Fall foliage may be at its most vibrant at sunrise and sunset when the sun is low in the sky and will not cast much glare. Slightly overcast days also may help leaves’ colors pop, but too much cloud cover may cause a lack of vibrancy in leaf color. WATCH THE WEATHER. Autumn weather can be unpredictable. Some days it may be crisp, while other days it will be hot. Sometimes you may experience hot and cold weather on the same day. Dress in layers so that you can be comfortable and shed or add layers as necessary. EXPLORE DIFFERENT SPOTS. Do not take the same route or visit the same towns each year. Vary your trips to experience a greater range of autumn magic. From the eastern seaboard to the Rockies, explore as many awe-inspiring palettes of fall colors as possible. METRO CREATIVE CONNECTION

Repurpose Your Antique Finds! Are you looking for an unique but functional accent piece for your house? Try breathing new life into an old or damaged item that you may be able to get for a discount. There are endless possibilities for repurposing antique and discarded items. Add some elbow grease and imagination, (and maybe some time on Pinterest) and you may find your own projects “pinned” for other’s inspiration.
➊ OLD SHUTTER ORGANIZER. Say you find one single shutter at the antique mall. What could you possibly use a single old shutter for? Clean it up, apply paint or whatever kind of finish you like, and reuse it as an organizer! You can hang pots and pans or other kitchen items, craft supplies, even make it a mail center or inspiration board with recipes and ideas to try.
➍ NEW PAINT AND HARDWARE. Sometimes all you need to give an old piece a facelift is a fresh coat of paint in a color that pops and some shiny new drawer pulls, knobs and hinges.
➎ PERFECT POTTING STATION. Transform a dinged up armoire into a top notch potting station and watch your garden grow.
➏ FRAME A MIRROR. Use old trim, especially decorative door encasements, to frame a floorlength mirror for your room. Make yours charming and decorative with a splash of paint in a modern color. ➐ REUSE A STRAY DRAWER. If you have refinished an armoire and find yourself with a leftover drawer, there are plenty of creative solutions to save it from the landfill. For example, turn it into a wall shelf or add casters and slide it under the bed for handy out of sight storage. BY CARRIE HARDER
➋ REPURPOSED GAME TABLE. Find an interesting table with some scrapes or scratches? Refinish the table to match your room, then paint a checkerboard on the top surface. For a clean look, tape off the checkerboard area or use a square shaped sponge or wood block as a stamp. ➌ WINDOW PICTURE FRAME. Display your favorite family photos or vintage postcards in a charming reworked window you can hang on the wall. Clean up the window and paint or stain the wood in a fun accent color. Mount your images behind the glass and find a place to showcase your handiwork!

Upstate Fall Foliage Here in South Carolina the autumn colors often appear more brilliantly and last longer than in other parts of the country. If you start in the mountains and work your way down through the state, you’ll see fall colors like you never have before! Here are some of the best state parks to visit for vibrant fall colors:
CAESARS HEAD STATE PARK
8155 Geer Hwy, Cleveland, SC 29635 A granitic gneiss outcropping atop the dramatic Blue Ridge Escarpment gives Caesars Head State Park its name. Every fall, from the easily-accessible overlook atop the rocky peak of the Blue Ridge Escarpment, sight-seers are treated to the Hawk Watch program and a spectacular view that extends into North Carolina and Georgia. Caesars Head connects to Jones Gap State Park in what is known as the Mountain Bridge Wilderness Area, an 11,000acre area of pristine southern mountain forest. Hikers can take a number of loop and traverse hiking trails that connect the parks, and trailside camping is available for those who choose the longer routes. One of the most popular trails at Caesars Head is the two-mile Raven Cliff Falls trail. This hiking trail leads to 420-foot Raven Cliff Falls, where a suspension bridge offers one of the two publicly accessible overlooks to the falls as they plunge deep into the mountain cove below. Trail access fee: $2 adults; $1.25 SC seniors; age 15 & younger free. Hours: 9am-9pm, daily during daylight saving time. 9am6pm, daily, remainder of the year. Trails close 1 hour before dark, year round.
DEVILS FORK STATE PARK
161 Holcombe Cir, Salem, SC 29676 The mountain spring-fed Lake Jocassee encompassed by the Jocassee Gorges, waterfalls accessible only by boat and some of the best South Carolina trout fishing are all part of the allure of Devils Fork State Park. The land around 7,500-acre Lake Jocassee remains mostly undeveloped and the only public access point to the lake is through Devils Fork. Four mountain streams and several waterfalls feed into the lake, making it cooler than others and a great South Carolina trout fishing spot. Plus, the unusually clear water of Lake Jocassee is a haven for scuba divers and swimmers. During the spring months, hikers on the two trails are treated to sightings of the endangered Oconee bell wildflower. Overnight guests can stay in a fully-furnished villa or in one of two campgrounds located near Lake Jocassee. Admission: $2 adults; $1.25 SC seniors; age 15 & younger free. | 8 | IWANNA FALL FUN GUIDE 9/16/2014

Hours: Late spring to mid-fall, 7am-9pm, daily; late fall to mid-spring 7am-6pm, daily.
JONES GAP STATE PARK
303 Jones Gap Rd, Marietta, SC 29661 Visitors can find the unforgettable peace and repose of a deep mountain cove at Jones Gap State Park. Trails and 11,000 acres of pristine mountain woodlands join the park with Caesars Head in what is known as the Mountain Bridge Wilderness Area. The Jones Gap State Park trails allow hikers to traverse between the two parks, as well as connect to a portion of the Foothills Trail South Carolina hikers know and love. When it comes to angling-especially trout fishing-South Carolina really shines. The state’s first designated scenic river, the Middle Saluda River, runs through Jones Gap and offers some of the best trout fishing South Carolina has to offer–and the trout fishing in South Carolina is quite good. The park also features a living lab for the park’s hand-on ecology learning center. Admission: Oct.1 - Nov.30 admission prices are: $5 adults; $3.25 SC seniors (age 65 & older); $3/ child age 6-15; Free for children 5 and younger. Hours: M-Su 9am-9pm, daily, during daylight savings time & 9am-6pm, daily, the remainder of the year. Trails close 1 hour before dark, year round.
KEOWEE-TOXAWAY STATE PARK
108 Residence Dr, Sunset, SC 29685 With some of the most stunning views of the Blue Ridge Mountains South Carolina has to offer, Keowee-Toxaway State Park is truly one of South Carolina’s pretty places. The Jocassee Gorges Visitor Center exhibits and information serve as a gateway to the Jocassee Gorges. Two hiking trails in the park take visitors over a natural bridge and through the foothills of the Blue Ridge mountains, land once traveled by Cherokee Indians. A short, half-mile trail leads to Lake Keowee where guests can enjoy fishing for bass, bream, crappie and catfish. If Lake Keowee camping isn’t quite right for you, a threebedroom rental cabin offers creature comforts with a scenic overlook of Lake Keowee and a private boat dock. For guests looking for a more primitive overnight stay, a short distance from Lake Keowee, camping sites with water and electrical hookups are available. Admission: Free admission Hours: Sat-Th 9am-6pm; Fri 9am-8pm (extended to 9pm M-Sun during Daylight Saving Time) IWANNA.COM
KINGS MOUNTAIN STATE PARK
1277 Park Rd, Blacksburg, SC 29702 The Piedmont’s Kings Mountain State Park has miles of forested trails perfect for supreme Kings Mountain hiking, two fishing lakes, and sits adjacent to Kings Mountain National Military Park, , one of many national park Revolutionary War sites. Local crowds flock to the park during regularly scheduled special events, especially every November when living history demonstrations are held at the park’s replica 1800s Piedmont farm. For those who want to stay overnight at Kings Mountain, campground accommodations–including equestrian facilities– are available at the Kings Mountain campground, with easy access to Kings Mountain hiking, fishing and more. Admission: $2/adult; $1.25 SC Seniors; age 15 & younger free Hours: 8am-6pm, daily (7am-9pm during Daylight Saving Time)
MUSGROVE MILL STATE HISTORIC SITE
398 State Park Rd, Clinton, SC 29325 Musgrove Mill’s peaceful setting in the Piedmont woods stands in sharp contrast to the bloody Battle of Musgrove Mill that took place there on Aug.19, 1780. The Revolutionary War historic sites at Musgrove Mill interpret and protect the location of the Battle of Musgrove Mill. The battle, in which the vastly outnumbered Patriot militia outlasted the Loyalists in a surprising victory, is detailed through interpretive signage in the visitor center and along two and a half miles of nature trails. Natural features of the park include Horseshoe Falls and the Enoree River, along which much of the fighting took place. Special events and living history programs are held at the park throughout the year. Admission: Free admission Hours: Main Gate: 9am-6pm, daily. Horseshoe Falls Road Area: sunrise to sundown, daily
OCONEE STATE PARK
624 State Park Rd, Mountain Rest, SC 29664 Oconee State Park has all of the perks of a relaxing mountain getaway. The Oconee State Park campground, Rustic, CCC-era cabins and a lake with a swimming hole, canoe rentals and fishing opportunities are only a sample of the park’s offerings. Several wooded nature trails wind through the foothills region and serve as the southern trailhead for the Foothills Trail, South Carolina’s 80-mile wilderness hike on the Blue Ridge Escarpment. Oconee is the perfect place for a family getaway with nostalgic activities such as square dancing during the summer months, Fourth of July festivities and other holiday events. Make plans to enjoy a weekend hiking the Foothills Trail, South Carolina fishing and boating or just hanging out at the Oconee State Park campground. Admission: Memorial Day through Labor Day: $5 adults; $3.25 SC seniors (age 65 & older); $3/child age 6-15; Free for children 5 and younger. Remainder of year: $2 age 16+; $1.25 SC Seniors; age 15 & younger free. Hours: Su-Th 7am-7pm; Fri-Sa 7am-9pm (extended to 7am9pm daily during Daylight Savings Time)
Great Depression, when it was built by the Civilian Conservation Corps. This heritage can still be seen in the preserved stone and timber outside of the renovated bathhouse, now known as the Park Center. Inside, the center features historical exhibits and a classroom to teach young and old about the park’s ecology. Paris Mountain is located in the rapidly-developing city of Greenville, South Carolina, and although the park was once a rural retreat, bikers, hikers and those visiting Camp Buckhorn now keep the park bustling year round. When it comes to camping in state parks, the Paris Mountain State Park camping facilities are top-notch and include paved camping sites, 13 of which offer tent pads, and five trailside campsites around the North Lake Trail Loop. Whether you’re coming from out of state or just looking to escape from Greenville, South Carolina for a few days, make your Paris Mountain State Park camping reservations and prepare for a weekend of great outdoor recreation! Admission: Memorial Day through Labor Day: $5 adults; $3.25 SC seniors (age 65 & older); $3/child age 6-15; Free for children 5 & younger. TABLE ROCK STATE PARK
158 E Ellison Ln, Pickens, SC 29671 The towering mountain which gives the park its name serves as a backdrop for this 3,000 acre park and its facilities. Below this section of the Blue Ridge Mountains, South Carolina natives and visitors can enjoy Table Rock State Park cabins, a campground and an old-fashioned swimming hole on one of the park’s two lakes. Table Rock State Park hiking trails serve as an access point for the 80-mile Foothills Trail. South Carolina hikers can use to travel between several connected South Carolina State Parks. The Table Rock State Park hiking trails take hikers past mountain streams and waterfalls to the tops of Pinnacle and Table Rock mountains. While the park is well known to outdoor enthusiasts for its natural features, Table Rock also has its place in history. Many of the Table Rock State Park cabins and other structures built by the CCC remain standing and are on the National Register of Historic Places. Admission: Memorial Day Saturday through Labor Day: $5 adults; $3.25 SC seniors (age 65 & older); $3/ child age 6-15; Free for children 5 & younger. New Bike Friendly Inn in Downtown Greenville The Swamp Rabbit Inn is a small European-style inn located in the heart of downtown Greenville. Located at 1 Logan Street, the inn features 6 guest rooms, a common kitchen, and community gathering spaces indoors and out. Appointed entirely with IKEA furniture, the inn provides refreshingly funky ambiance and design. “As Greenville’s vibrant cycling community continues to grow and gain national attention, we felt something was missing,” said Lynam, a longtime cycling enthusiast and entrepreneur. “What we have created is a haven for cyclists and visitors with a modern active lifestyle twist. This is not your grandmother’s B & B.” The two-story Inn sits in a historic area just a few steps from Main Street and only two blocks from the GHS Swamp Rabbit Trail, a 17+ mile paved bike trail. It is also within walking distance of Fluor Field, The Kroc Center, wedding venues, and many of Greenville’s shops and nationally recognized restaurants. “We’re going for a cozy and communal feel, with the comfy bedrooms and inviting outdoor spaces,” said Lynam. “To our delight, several visitors have already booked the entire house for upcoming weddings, team sports events, girl’s weekends, corporate retreats and family gatherings.” Only open a month, the inn has already housed a
Photo courtesy of swamprabbitinn.com group of cyclists for the “Cycle To Farm” tour and visitors, including a visit from Super Model Kiara Kabukaru, as well as a stay by Food Network’s “harshest critic” and Iron Chef and Cutthroat Kitchen judge, Simon Majumdar. Lynam continues her work to ensure The Swamp Rabbit Inn successfully embodies and expresses the essence of Greenville. “Cycling is a passion of mine and this is the place to do it on all levels,” she said. “Greenville is a cosmopolitan Southern town and we want to help visitors make the most out of their stay.” Along with lodging, the inn features a bike shed outfitted with eight city bikes for rent and offers ride-up maintenance for cyclists from bike mechanic and inn manager Robin Rouselle (a.k.a. “R2”). For more information visit swamprabbitinn.com or stop by 1 Logan Street Greenville, SC 20601. Bookings are handled on the website or by calling (888) 291-3025 or email swamprabbitinn@gmail.com.
