North Carolina Zoo

From the wilds of Africa to the shores of the icy Arctic, there are plenty of discoveries for all ages! At the North Carolina Zoo in Asheboro, you can walk from the African grasslands to the North American Arctic Coast in a single afternoon. The zoo’s KidZone exhibit, which is a playground aimed at connecting kids with nature, has animal encounters and features a stream, tree top trail, mud café and a butterfly garden. Guests will want to stop by the Polar Bear Exhibit to see Anana, the zoo’s iconic polar bear. The exhibit features an indoor gallery with educational graphics, video footage of polar bears in the wild and an artificial ice cave. Chimney Rock

A beautiful oasis high in the sky, Chimney Rock is a great day trip for the nature enthusiast. The top of Chimney Rock, a height of 2,280 feet above sea level, provides visitors a 75-mile view of Lake Lure, Hickory Nut Gorge and the Carolina Piedmont. The Chimney is actually a 535-million-year-old remnant of igneous rock. From the upper parking lot, visitors can reach the Chimney by the trail system or ride a 26-story elevator inside the mountain. Southern Blue Ridge Escarpment Gorges Where the Blue Ridge Mountains rise dramatically from rolling hills to nearly 4,000 feet above sea level. Grove Arcade One of Asheville’s Architectural Jewels

A fanciful building, envisioned by Edwin Wiley Grove of the Grove Park Inn, that incorporates many architectural styles and served as one of the leading commercial buildings in the city in the 1930s. At 269,000 square feet, it was (and still is) the largest building in downtown Asheville. The Grove Arcade was closed to the public in 1942 when the Federal Government took over the building as part of the effort to win World War II. Eventually the building served as the headquarters for the National Climatic Data Center. They moved from the Arcade in 1995 into a new building nearby, opening the way for a

long-standing local movement to return the Arcade to its original use. You’ll notice as you enter the building that it was constructed on a slope. The building’s designers followed the topography of the land, which makes for interesting spaces and changing levels. After an extensive five year renovation, the Grove Arcade reopened in 2002. Today, the ground level is filled with an exciting mix of galleries, shops and restaurants. The second floor is occupied by offices and the third through fifth floors house luxury apartments. Come stroll the Arcade’s marble halls while shopping and dining at today’s locally-owned shops, galleries and restaurants. From I-240 take Exit 4-C and follow Grove Arcade signs. Swamp Rabbit Trail This rail line turned greenway has reclaimed 17.5 miles of walking/biking paths along the Reedy River between Travelers Rest and Downtown Greenville, and beyond.

The trail’s name refers to the Swamp Rabbit Railroad, a freight carrier established in 1888 as the Carolina, Knoxville and Western Railroad. The line got it’s nickname, “Swamp Rabbit,” from Greenville residents who rode the railroad on picnic excursions to the mountains in northern Greenville County. Locals and visitors alike flock to the trail to walk, jog, bike and enjoy the scenery.

Lake Jocassee The mountain spring-fed Lake Jocassee encompassed by the Jocassee Gorges, waterfalls accessible only by boat and some of the best South Carolina trout fishing are all part of the allure of Devils Fork State Park. The land around 7,500-acre Lake Jocassee remains mostly undeveloped and the only public access point to the lake is through Devils Fork. Four mountain streams and several waterfalls feed into the lake, making it cooler than others and a great South Carolina trout fishing spot. Plus, the unusually clear water of Lake Jocassee is a haven for scuba divers and swimmers. During the spring months, hikers on the two trails are treated to sightings of the endangered Oconee bell wildflower. The lake was built in 1973 along with Lake Keowee, its sister lake, as part of the Keowee-Toxaway project. The dam on Lake Jocassee, which is 385 feet high, impounds four rivers, and the discharge becomes the Keowee River arm of Lake Keowee. The lake is eight miles long and covers 7,565 acres. Devils Fork State Park - located just off of SC Highway 11, provides about anything you can think of for a great lake trip. There are several boat ramps, campgrounds, and hiking trails. Devils Fork State park is also the starting point of the famous Foothills Trail. If you visit Lake Jocassee, you should definitely stop by Hoyetts store on the way. and where to go for camping, hiking, and fishing. Also, Hoyetts offers boat tours, boat rentals, fishing guides, and a ferry service for hikers and campers. Come Zorbing at Outdoor Gravity Park in Pigeon Forge PIGEON FORGE’S NEWEST FAMILY FUN attraction offers two wet and slippery attractions, one dry activity, and it plans to add two more adventures later this summer. It is Outdoor Gravity Park, a new business on the former Zorb site that features the New Zealand iconic OGO adventure and the spinning-in-place Fishpipe. The OGO is a plastic sphere 11 feet in diameter, with a smaller sphere inside. One, two or three passengers make a Superman-like dive into the inner sphere, get doused with water (that’s the slippery part) and then roll down a steep 1,000-foot-long hill. Slip! Slide! Get Wet! No tumbling! Riders wanting a completely different experience enter a special OGO with harness seating and take a revolving roll down the hill.

The Fishpipe is a totally new attraction – a rotating barrel water slide. The barrel is made of plastic and is suspended in a steel frame. Passengers can go solo, duo or trio and Slip! Slide! Get Wet! You will cover more distance than any lateral water slide. “Our site is 17 acres, and we have plenty of room to grow. We plan to add two more attractions this summer. Craft Fair of the Southern Highlands July 16-19 and October 15 -18 @ US Cellular Center in Downtown Asheville, NC Nearly 200 juried artists of the Southern Highland Craft Guild will be selling works of clay, metal, wood, jewelry, fiber, paper, natural materials, leather and mixed media. The Craft Fairs have a proud tradition and history of excellence by representing the Southern Highland Craft Guild, a nonprofit organization formed in 1930. Mighty Moo Festival When the first Mighty Moo Festival was held in Cowpens, S.C., in 1977, organizers weren’t sure how successful the event would be. According to the town’s website, the Cowpens Bicentennial Committee in 1976 decided that the next town festival would be called the Mighty Moo Festival, in honor of former crewmen of the USS Cowpens World War II aircraft carrier. But that first year, more than 1,500 people showed up to honor the USS Cowpens crewmen, and the event has been growing every year since. Now a 4-day event, the 2015 festival will be held in downtown Cowpens from June 17-20. The event features street dances, great food, a golf tournament, beauty pageant, a baseball game, an arts and crafts sale, and the Mighty Moo Parade. The festival is a celebration of the town’s history and honors veterans and crewmen of the USS Cowpens CVL 25 and the USS Cowpens CG63. You can also check out the history of the town. The Cowpens National Battlefield is 11 miles north of I-85. The entrance is near the intersection of SC Hwy 11 and Hwy 110.
