Sliding Rock Indulge in nature’s very own waterslide in Brevard, NC — a place where rushing water and a smooth slab of river rock come together in perfect harmony. Sliding Rock in Pisgah National Forest is a 60 foot natural rock slide with an 8 foot deep pool at the base — perfect for folks looking for a fun waterfall to slide down! The slide is a Forest Service recreation area with lifeguards and staff on duty from late May 27th through September 4th from 10am - 6pm, but visitors may slide any time during daylight hours. With a low fee of $2 per person when staff members are on duty and free during “off” hours (restrooms will be closed and donations are still encouraged even when admission is waived), it’s affordable and will foster memories that last a lifetime! Children 6 and under may slide for free. The warm weather does bring the crowds, but you’ll have fun waiting your turn as you watch each slider’s expression as they go down! There are also two observation areas for those who would rather watch the excitement. Located along US 276, about 7.5 miles south of the Blue Ridge Parkway (or a little over 7 miles north off US 280 in Brevard). blue ridge parkway America’s favorite drive stretches 469 miles and features outstanding scenery and recreational opportunities. The 469 miles of the Blue Ridge Parkway, wind through an abundant biodiversity, including some of the oldest mountains in the world. The Parkway starts in the Great Smoky Mountains in North Carolina and ends in Virginia’s Shenandoah Valley. With abundant hiking trails, scenic overlooks, and picnic areas, you can easily spend the whole day enjoying the Parkway’s stunning beauty. From Mount Mitchell (Milepost 355.3), the highest point East of the Mississippi, to places like Craggy Gardens (MP 364.3) and Devil’s Courthouse (MP 422.2), see the biological diversity of the area’s varied topography. chimney rock A beautiful oasis high in the sky, Chimney Rock State Park is a great day trip for nature enthusiasts of all ages. At 2,280 feet above sea level, Chimney Rock provides views of Lake Lure, Hickory Nut Gorge and the Carolina Piedmont. The Chimney is a 535-million-year-old remnant of igneous rock. From the upper parking lot, reach the Chimney by trail system or ride a 26-story elevator inside the mountain. The elevator opens into the Sky Lounge Gift Shop & Deli at Chimney level.

Lake Conestee nature Park Escape the urban downtown Greenville along the beautiful Reedy River Looking for a place to escape the urban fast-paced lifestyle of Greenville, South Carolina? Six miles south of downtown there is a 400 acres nature park called Lake Conestee, spanning 3 miles along the Reedy River. This beautiful natural habitat along the Reedy River contains both a hardwood and evergreen forest, extensive wetlands and is home to a rich diversity of wildlife with over 200 different bird species. The park has been designated as an Important Bird Area of Global Significance by the National Audubon Society. Another urban escape can be found just off of Main Street located in Falls Park were Reedy River Falls can be viewed. There is even a pedestrian suspension bridge, named the Liberty Bridge, that sits over the falls, perfect for taking angled pictures otherwise not seen. The twenty-four acres around the falls was bought in 1967 by the Carolina Foothills Garden Club and turned into a park filled with blooming gardens, walking trails and a manifold of benches for visitors to sit and admire the view. The area has been tirelessly worked on and cleaned up to restore it to its natural beauty and preserve the historic Falls. 14

paris mountain state park Located just North of Greenville, Paris Mountain State Park is a wilderness gem of over 1700 acres. Paris Mountain State Park is one of 16 South Carolina Parks that were built in the 1930s by the Depression era Civilian Conservation Corps. Because it’s a monadnock (a mountain that rises up out of otherwise flat land), Paris Mountain offers spectacular views and terrain for hiking, trail running, mountain biking, camping, fishing and pretty much any other outdoor activity. This park has something for everyone, from clear mountain streams and lakes, 15 miles of trails, to paddle-boats, campsites and cabin rentals. There are four lakes in the park and the park features a cool swimming area open during the summer months. The educational Park Center explains the role of Paris Mountain in providing the city of Greenville with water from the years 1890 to 1916. Visitors to the park today can see two of the original 1880s dams from this part of the park’s history. Paris Mountain State Park is home to around 73 different types of flora. The majority of the plant life on Paris Mountain is similar to plant life found on mountains farther north. Summer hours are 8am-9pm. Age 5 & Under: Free, Age 6-15: $3, Age 16-64: $5, Age 65+: $3.25. ghs swamp rabbit trail The Greenville Health System Swamp Rabbit Trail is a 21-mile multi-use greenway connecting Travelers Rest with Greenville and beyond. The Swamp Rabbit Trail traverses along the Reedy River, an old railroad corridor, and several city parks making for a fun and safe place to walk, bicycle, birdwatch, and explore nature as well as browse through the many local businesses just off the trail from Travelers Rest to Greenville. The rails-to-trail Swamp Rabbit idea was born in 1999 when Greenville County bought 13 miles of abandoned railroad track for the trail for $1.3 million. The trail got its quirky name from the defunct G&NR train, locally called the Swamp Rabbit. It is believed the name came from the wetlands along the Reedy River that the line traversed and the bouncy nature of the ride. The greenway officially opened for public use in May of 2009. This flat, traffic-free trail is perfect for a family bike ride and visitors can rent bicycles at either end of the trail. If you cannot reach the trail by bicycle, there are many spots to park vehicles along the way as well as Greenlink bus stops. All Greenlink buses are equipped with bicycle racks. Holmes Educational state Forest Looking for a great place to take the family for hiking and picnicking? Come to Holmes Educational State Forest to experience nature as it should be, without crowds or admission fees. Holmes Educational State Forest is renowned for the diversity of wildflowers on display throughout the year and offers rich cove forest habitats that host a variety of plant and animal life. The forest, located just north of DuPont State Recreational Forest in Henderson County, was originally established as a tree nursery in the mid 1930â&#x20AC;&#x2122;s. The land became an Educational State Forest in the early 1970â&#x20AC;&#x2122;s with a mission to utilize the property as an outdoor classroom. The forest has a variety of hiking trails, ranging from easy to strenuous, as well as picnic areas that are great for family gatherings. Check out the many educational displays scattered throughout the forest to learn more about forest management and wildland firefighting. Holmes Educational State Forest also offers free Ranger led hikes and programs by appointment for groups of 10 or more people on a variety of topics. walhalla state fish hatchery Built in the 1930s by the Civilian Conservation Corps, the Walhalla State Fish Hatchery is the only trout hatchery in South Carolina. The Walhalla State Fish Hatchery is unique in that it is the only state hatchery involved in the culture of trout, a coldwater species. Trout are produced here in support of recreational fishing. When they reach an appropriate size, the trout are stocked wherever suitable coldwater habitat occurs in South Carolina. The streams of the Appalachian Mountains are generally pristine and of good water quality. However, they are frequently not very fertile and are not as productive as streams in other areas of the country. This is due to the type of bedrock from where they originate which produces low alkalinity in the water. Therefore, streams in South Carolina do not typically support high fish populations on their own. This fact, combined with heavy fishing pressure, creates the need for supplemental stocking with trout from the hatchery to sustain a viable fishery. In a typical year, the Hatchery produces approximately 500,000 trout for stocking the public waters of South Carolina. They also provide 22

eggs and small fingerlings to other State agencies. Visitors are welcome to tour the hatchery, to fish in the East Fork which runs through hatchery grounds, or to picnic in areas provided for the public. Special group tours can be arranged. Visits by individuals and families are generally on a walk-through basis. Adjacent to the hatchery is the Chattooga Picnic Area which offers a barrier-free fishing pier and access to the hiking trails of the Ellicott Rock Wilderness. Hikers may take a trail that goes along side the East Fork for 2.5 miles to the main Chattooga River. From there you can go upstream to Ellicottâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Rock (1.7 miles) or downstream to the Burrellâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Ford campground and parking lot (2.1 miles). To get to the hatchery from Walhalla, take SC 28 N to SC 107. Continue on SC 107 approximately 13 miles. Look for the Walhalla Hatchery sign and turn left on the Hatchery road. sc botanical garden The South Carolina Botanical Garden is a diverse 295 acres of natural and manicured landscapes with miles of streams and nature trails. Located on the campus of Clemson University, the beautiful gardens also host a nationally recognized nature-based sculpture collection, distinguished education and outreach programs, and the Bob Campbell Geology Museum (open Wednesday through Sunday). History buffs will enjoy the Hanover House (ca. 1716) and the Hunt Family Cabin (ca. 1826). Art connoisseurs will want to experience the Gardenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s collection of site-specific, nature-based sculptures and the art galleries in the Fran Hanson Discovery

Other points of interest include the many demonstration gardens, such as the Camellia Garden, Wildlife Habitat Garden, Xeriscape Garden and Hosta Garden; the 70-acre Schoenike Arboretum; the Heritage Gardens, and trails. The River Arts District consists of a vast array of artists and working studios spread out along the French Broad River. This eclectic area presents an exciting spectrum of artistic and cultural creativity. Plan on spending a day or more visiting artists working in their studios, grabbing a bite of local cuisine or beer and taking time to find art that’s perfect for your world. The RAD district is made up of local artists who open their studios to visitors and the public throughout the year. folk art center Located on the Blue Ridge Parkway, Ashevilleâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Folk Art Center is home to the Southern Highland Craft Guild, one of the strongest craft organizations in the country. The Southern Highland Craft Guild, chartered in 1930, is today one of the strongest craft organizations in the country. The Guild currently represents nearly 900 craftspeople in 293 counties of 9 southeastern states. During the Depression the Guild cultivated commerce for craftspeople in the Appalachian region. This legacy continues today as the Guild plays a large role in the Southern Highlands craft economy. Educational programming is another fundamental element of the organization, fulfilled through integrated educational craft demonstrations at retail outlets and expos, free educational community events, and an extensive public library located at headquarters. The Folk Art Center showcases the finest in traditional and contemporary crafts of the Southern Appalachians. In addition to an Eastern National bookstore and Blue Ridge Parkway information desk, the center houses three galleries, a library and the Guildâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s oldest craft shop. Visitors can see live craft 38

demonstrations daily in the Folk Art Center lobby. Demonstration hours are 10am to 4pm. Visitors are invited to watch highly skilled craftspeople work and talk about their craft. The permanent collection at the center includes an exhibit of approximately 250 works features the best of woodcarving, textiles, furniture, basketry, pottery, dolls, and other crafts of Southern Appalachia, dating from 1855 to the late 20th century. The Folk Art Center also hosts numerous events year round. the peace center Adjacent to Falls Park in the heart of downtown Greenville, the Peace Center brings national acts and Broadway shows to the Upstate. blue ridge arts center The Blue Ridge Arts Center houses a rich display of art joining the area’s cultural heritage with the talent of individual artists. motorcycle is chomping at the bit to get you to where ever your next adventure lies. My 2014 Harley Davidson Ultra Classic, "Gemma," purchased at Harley Davidson of Asheville, has taken me and my wife, Debbie, to some unforgettable places. And I know, beyond a shadow of a doubt, when I straddle that iron horse again, She will be ready for my next destination. Why? one word ... Planning. If you are gonna get on your bike, no matter what the make and model, planning is a must for a fun filled, successful trip to and from your destination. If you are in a hurry and throw a "last minute" trip together, then my suggestion is, drive your car or buy a plane ticket! When I travel compliments of my Harley Davidson, I take months to plan my trips. Let me offer a few suggestions. Make reservations early! For my summer trips, ALL Hotels, anything requiring a ticket to get in to the event are made and purchased by the month of January before my trip the following Summer. You need to get this checked off your list early because there are still a few "must do" things before you can enjoy those summer rays. And planning months in advance will save you money.

When I ride "Gemma" I stop at least every 100 miles, drink plenty of water, and stretch. There is nothing more embarrassing than riding for hours, stopping to fuel up, your legs are rubbery, your shoulders are hurting, your arms are cramping, you bring that 1000 pound bike to a stop and CRAP! You can't hold the bike up and you have to lay it down, This is not good for your ego. Especially when all 172 people at the Flying J Truck Stop are looking at you! Always remember... It's not IF you will ever lay your bike down, it's WHEN. It's gonna happen. I prefer later than sooner.

Finally, PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE! No alcohol while riding your bike! It's hard enough getting to

your destination on 2 wheels. Between other people texting, putting on make up, or eating a Big Mac while driving. The last thing you need is to do is take a "snort," fire up your HOG and hit the road. Get to your destination first. Then sit by the pool, call an UBER, Walk, Crawl, and fill up, if your heart desires, Taking a trip on your motorcycle can be fun. Just remember, plan and take your time! Enjoy the road and scenery. lake jocassee A mountain spring-fed lake encompassed by gorges, waterfalls accessible only by boat and some of the best SC trout fishing are all part of the allure of Devils Fork State Park. The land around 7,500-acre Lake Jocassee remains mostly undeveloped and the only public access point to the lake is through Devils Fork State Park. Four mountain streams and several waterfalls feed into the lake, making it cooler than others and a great South Carolina trout fishing spot. Plus, the unusually clear water of Lake Jocassee is a haven for scuba divers and swimmers. During the spring months, hikers on the two trails are treated to sightings of the endangered Oconee bell wildflower. The lake was built in 1973 along with Lake Keowee, its sister lake, as part of the Keowee-Toxaway project. The dam on Lake Jocassee, which is 385 feet high, impounds four rivers, and the discharge becomes the Keowee River arm of Lake Keowee. The lake is eight miles long and covers 7,565 acres. 60

Devils Fork State Park - located just off of SC Highway 11, provides about anything you can think of for a great lake trip. There are several boat ramps, campgrounds, and hiking trails. Devils Fork State park is also the starting point of the famous Foothills Trail. If you visit Lake Jocassee, you should definitely stop by Hoyetts store on the way. It is located on the same road as the state park. They know all about the lake and where to go for camping, hiking, and fishing. Also, Hoyetts offers boat tours, boat rentals, fishing guides, and a ferry service for hikers and campers. At Devils Fork State Park, admission is $2 adults; $1.25 for seniors; and age 15 & younger are admitted free. FEI World Equestrian Games Come and enjoy the showmanship and gracefulness of the horses and riders as they compete for awards and medals. For 14 days in September, the 11th through the 23rd, the Tryon area in North Carolina is expected to explode with people. This year, for the first time, the Tryon International Equestrian Center is hosting the FEI World Equestrian Games™ (WEG). Basically it’s the Olympics but for horses, even being held every four years between the summer and winter games and administered by the Fédération Equestre Internationale (FEI). What an honor it is for the United States to host the prestigious WEG for a second time, the first time being in Lexington, Kentucky in 2010. People from over 70+ countries will be coming to compete and over 500,000 attendees are expected to show up, making this the largest sporting event in the United States for 2018.
