Men and women furnish their homes and apartments in various ways. For some, home furnishings are an extension of their personalities, while others prioritize budget over style when furnishing their domiciles.

S

econdhand furniture has long been used to furnish homes and apartments. While young people working with tight budgets and living in their first apartments might be the most likely to rely on secondhand furniture, such items are not exclusive to recent college graduates and young professionals. Homeowners with a love of antiques or those who simply can’t resist thrift store bargains also are likely to lean on secondhand furniture. Used furnishings range from expensive high-end antiques to bargain bin chairs and couches found in thrift stores or purchased online. Pricey antiques often come fully restored, but that still leaves legions of shoppers who need to bring their secondhand furnishings back to life. The following are a few ways to do just that.

➊ E m b r ac E you r i n n E r P ica s s o. A fresh coat of paint can go a long way

toward stylizing secondhand furniture. Items that have been through a lot before making it to your home may benefit from some sanding before receiving a fresh coat of paint. Once items have been sanded, smoothed and cleaned, apply some primer before dusting off your paintbrush. Primer makes it easier for the fresh coat of paint to bond to the furniture, making it less likely that the new coat will chip or crack in the months to come. After applying primer, the painting can commence. Two to three coats should be sufficient to give the item a fresh new look. Allow the item to dry for several hours before showing it off and putting it to good use.

➋ u P g r a dE o l d u Ph o l st E ry. Old

chairs and couches tend to have ample wear and tear. But such items are still useful as long as their bones are still sturdy, even if cushions have flattened out and fabric is suffering from

tears or stains. Reupholstering old furniture can turn inexpensive but worn down older items into seemingly brand new pieces at a fraction of the cost of new furniture. According to Better Homes and Gardens magazine, the following supplies are necessary to successfully reupholster furniture: - needle-nose pliers - camera or notepaper and pencil - marking pen - scissors - staple gun and staples, 3/8 or 5/16-inch - 1/2-inch batting - upholstery fabric (chairs typically require 5 yards) - straight pins - 5/32-inch welt cord - sewing machine - upholstery-weight thread - tack strips - fabric glue, optional - upholstery tacks or nailhead trim, optional - black breathable fabric for the underside of furniture Reupholstering furniture

TIP Older furniture can be both practical and chic, and there are many ways to bring such items back to life without breaking the bank. can be a tedious process, and one novices might want to leave to the professionals. The cost of reupholstering secondhand furniture bought at a garage sale, thrift store or private seller online is likely still less expensive than buying a new piece, so you might still make out in the long run. If reupholstering proves too expensive but the furniture still has ample and comfortable cushioning, consider employing a slip cover to hide stained or torn upholstery. Slip covers are typically inexpensive, and

secondhand furniture can sometimes be as easy as washing away years of wear and tear. Old chests of drawers, dressers or armoires might just need a good scrubbing to look as good as new. Before cleaning older furniture, remove the old wax with a stripper bought at a hardware store. Old coats of wax can prevent cleaners from reaching the surface of the furniture, so they must be removed for cleaning products to be effective. When cleaning old furniture, it’s a good idea to solicit advice from antique dealers, who can help you avoid damaging the piece even further. A small amount of dishwashing liquid mixed with warm water can be used to gently clean old wax off of furniture. When applying such a mixture, be careful to avoid soaking the item or letting the mixture pool on its surface. Work slowly, gradually cleaning small areas one by one and wiping them down with a damp cloth to ensure wax and other residue has vanished completely. Once the item has been thoroughly cleaned and been given ample time to dry, you can apply a new coat of wax. by m E t r o c r E at i v E c o n n E c t i o n

create a rainwater harvesting system

R

ainwater collection is a way to conserve water that can be adopted by both private homeowners and businesses. Harvesting water during peak times of precipitation ensures water will be on hand during drought or when water restrictions are implemented. Making use of rainwater reduces reliance on underground wells or municipal water systems. Harvesting rainwater also can help prevent flooding and soil erosion. The average homeowner can collect thousands of gallons of rainwater each year. To learn just how much water can be harvested, as well as how many natural resources can be produced from that rain, visit www.save-the-rain. com, where men and women can calculate their rain collection potential by geographic location and average rainfall. Afterward, homeowners may be inclined to establish their own rainwater harvesting systems. Here is how to get started.

TIP Rather than have rainwater flow out of downspouts to the ground, homeowners can collect that rainwater in barrels to use it as a sustainable source of water.

DE T E R M I N E YOU R R O O F I NG M AT E R I A L . Potable water can

be harvested from homes with sheet metal or slate roofing. Clay or adobe tiles also may be acceptable. Asphalt, wood shingles and tar roofs may leach toxic chemicals into the water, making it unsafe for drinking. This rainwater may only be collected to use for irrigation methods or washing cars and outdoor items.

surrounded by many trees, you probably accumulate leaf and tree debris in your home gutters and downspouts. Leaf guards will help keep the gutters clear and increase water flow through the water collection system.

C R E AT E A WAT E R

A portion of the gutter system should be removed so that it connects to the collection barrel or tank. As the rain falls, it will run down the roof and into the gutters before it streams into the downspouts. The downspout connected to the tank will deposit the water directly inside. Filters can be installed to help block the flow of debris.

Some gutters are made with lead soldering components. A commercial lead swab test can help you determine if there is lead present in your gutters. At a later time you can choose to replace the gutters if you desire a potable supply of water.

of manufacturers offer prefabricated rain collection systems complete with collection barrels. Otherwise, you can use your own barrel or tank to house the collected water. Ensure it is large enough to handle the volume of water collected.

connection makes it easy to use the collected water for outdoor purposes. Many rainwater collection systems are designed with an overflow safeguard that will prevent the water from backing up through the system. It will divert the rainwater back out of the downspout when the barrel or tank is full. A rainwater collection system harnesses a natural source of water to be used for gardens and other outdoor purposes. This water doesn’t contain chlorine or other additives, making it relatively clean and safe to use. Homeowners should check to see if a permit is necessary to install a rainwater collection system and then begin gathering water for various uses. by M E T R O C R E AT I V E C O N N E C T I O N

Rain Chains a pleasing alternative Rain chains are an alternate way for rain water to travel from your gutter to the ground. By replacing your standard downspout with a rain chain, you can create an effective and beautiful ‘waterfall’. The rain trickles down the chain with a zen-like sound – it is a truly pleasing alternative to a standard rain downspout.

R

ain chains originated many hundreds of years ago in Japan. The kusari doi, or “chain gutter,” is a simple way to carry rain from a roof to the ground in an aesthetically pleasing manner. The Japanese have used these chains on temples and homes over the years with much success and many interesting variations on the basic idea.

TIP There are many styles of rain chains ranging from decorative bowl styles to simple linked chains.

EASY UPKEEP

While they are arguably more attractive than a regular downspout, aesthetics are not the only benefit to overhauling your gutter system. Rain chains are often used in areas where downspouts are quickly clogged. Even with a bowl or cup style chain, a homeowner can easily see when leaves or debris collect and can clean them with little trouble. C O L L E C T WAT E R

As with any drain system, you want to direct water away from your foundation as well as prevent erosion. In that regard, you will need some sort of catch basin at the base of the chain. Try diverting the chain directly into a rain barrel and use the collected water for your flower pots and gardening needs. Plants thrive when they’re watered with rainwater as it doesn’t have the chlorine and fluoride that are added to our drinking water. C H O O S E A ST Y L E

Visit rainchains.com to get an idea of how many premade options are out there – they carry a variety of styles and materials ranging from stylized koi fish and pineapples to simple linked chains. And for the crafty types, one search for “rain chain DIY” on Pinterest will have you ready to revamp your gutters. STA R T S M A L L

Start with an area of your gutter system that typically has lighter drainoff to determine how much water your chosen chain can handle. You may find that different styles will work better for different parts of your house, or that an area with heavy drainoff benefits from multiple complementary chains. by CA R R I E H A R D E R

gardening tips for beginners TIP Gardening can be a labor-intensive yet gratifying hobby. By sticking to a few simple rules, beginners can develop a thriving garden to reward all of that hard work.

Gardening is a rewarding hobby that many enthusiasts credit with helping them to peacefully escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Though gardening can be both relaxing and rewarding, it’s not as easy as it may seem, and the more time and effort a person devotes to his or her garden the more likely it is to be successful.

G

ardening can be a little daunting for beginners who have little or no experience planting flowers or vegetables. But gardening need not be so intimidating, especially for those beginners who adhere to the following tips aimed at helping novice gardeners start their gardens off on the right foot.

➊ DE T E R M I N E W H AT YOU S H OU L D PL A N T. Where

you live will go a long way toward determining what you should plant. While you can plant anything you can get your hands on, the United States Department of Agriculture as well as Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada have determined specific plant hardiness zones that indicate which plants are most likely to thrive in given locations. Maps of these zones can be found at www.usda.gov and www.agr.gc.ca. By adhering to the maps, gardeners can significantly increase their chances of growing successful gardens. When in doubt about what to plant, consult a local gardening center or seek advice from a professional landscaper.

When you plant is sometimes as important as what you plant. Some climates allow for year-round planting, but many do not. When buying seeds, the packaging might suggest what time of year to plant the seeds. Adhere to these suggestions or your garden

At the end of each gardening session, clean your tools thoroughly, as soil left on your garden tools can play host to potentially harmful microbes that might kill your plants. by M E T R O C R E AT I V E C O N N E C T I O N

➋ T H I N K LO CAT IO N W H E N B E G I N N I NG YOU R G A R DE N. Beginners with large yards have the luxury of choosing the right location on their properties to start planting. When choosing a spot, consider how much sunlight a location gets on a daily basis and the spot’s proximity to a water supply. If planting flowers, try to avoid planting in areas with heavy foot traffic so the flowers are less likely to be stomped. If you’re planting flowers to accent walkways, then consider erecting a barrier around the flower bed to safeguard the flowers from foot traffic.

scheme lends itself well to modern spaces. It uses tints and shades of one color, staying within the same column on the color wheel. A monochromatic scheme for red might feature a range of tones from cherry to deep wine.

Paint is one of the least expensive and most versatile means to changing the look of a room. According to the experts from “This Old House,” 60 percent of the colors of a home that visitors perceive come from the paint on the walls. Choosing a color scheme can be challenging, which is why so many people stick with neutrals like beige and white. For those who are ready to add a spark of color, there are a few guidelines to consider.

C

olor theory is a science and there are rules of using color that are taught as early as a child’s first foray into art class. We know there are primary, secondary and complementary colors on the color wheel. Even novice home decorators can do well with color if they use the color wheel as their guideline. According to HGTV, color should flow throughout a house. Every room need not be painted the same color. However, colors should be complementary enough that they flow into one another. Don’t paint one room in child’s basic primary colors, while painting other rooms in jewel tones and pastels. Stick with one theme and carry it

through the house. Once you have decided to use a bold color, first find your color inspiration. Color combinations that appear in nature are more readily accepted by people, so look for an item in nature, such as a seashell or a flowering plant that you can base your color choices on. Others pull inspiration from a particular design item. For instance, maybe an area rug strikes your fancy. Use colors that appear in the rug in the room. Keep in mind that using bold color doesn’t mean you have to paint every wall from ceiling to floor in that color. Rather, if you’re just starting out with bold colors, select one wall to serve as an accent wall. Use that wall as your bold canvas and paint it with

your chosen hue. Some people like to experiment with a more flashy color in a smaller space. If you’re nervous about beginning in the living room or kitchen, how about trying out bold color in a smaller space, such as a powder room? A more intimate space might seem less overwhelming when painted in a bold color. Go for a deep purple or another jeweled tone. However, try to avoid greens in the bathroom, as they may reflect off of the mirror and cast a hue onto your face that makes you look unwell. Pinks and peaches will shed a rosy glow. If you will be incorporating complementary colors into the room, use the paint color

swatch as your guide. Most paint manufacturers use three or four different shades on one sample card. When selecting a complementary shade, be sure to pick from the same tone on the card. That means if you’re choosing the darkest of color #1 from a card, you’ll want to choose the darkest from color #2. Another idea is to leave walls neutral and use bold color on design accents. For example, designers at marthastewart. com recommend painting the inside of niches, shelves or cabinets with glass doors in bright tones and the outside white to create an eyecatching space without going overboard. Put a bold color on moulding or use an appliance or a fixture in a bright color as your splash of boldness. Remember to have balance. If you will be painting an entire room in a bold color, think about having the other decor items in neutral colors. Sofas

House cleaning can be monotonous and timeconsuming. But ignoring cleaning tasks may leave you with a much larger mess to tackle.

C

leaning does not have to be such a difficult job. There are a number of time-saving strategies to keep the mess to a minimum and keep your weekend afternoons free from all-day cleaning marathons.

➊ D o t h e Di s h e s a f t e r e v e ry m e a l . A sink full of

dishes can make the kitchen look like a mess, and letting dishes pile up increases the risk of an insect infestation. Although it may seem like a chore, keeping on top of dishes actually reduces your workload. If you’re lucky enough to have an automatic dishwasher, then load dishes directly into the dishwasher instead of putting dirty items into the sink.

P r o t e ct you r m ic r owav e . The

inside of the microwave tends to get dirty rather quickly. Heating up snacks or quick meals may result in spill-overs or splatter. To cut down on cleaning time, stack several paper towels on the turntable. Should a spill occur, simply discard the top paper towel for an easy clean-up.

sw i t c h you r s oa P.

Glycerin or liquid soaps do not have traditional binders that are in many bar soaps. Without the binders, which are the primary cause of soap scum, you will have to contend with much less soap scum in showers and sinks. To further cut down on soap scum, use a small, flexible squeegee to wipe down tile walls and glass doors after each shower.

➍ wo r k f r o m t h e t o P D ow n. Dust and dirt settles

at the lowest levels. Avoid messing up what you have just cleaned by beginning any cleaning task high up and moving downward. Therefore, dust shelves and cobwebs from ceiling corners first, then tackle tables and other surfaces before ultimately

Foyers tend to accumulate a lot of clutter. Organize the space so you’re less tempted to drop items as soon as you come in. Keep the recycling bin (or shredder) handy for dealing with junk mail. Have a coat rack for hats, coats and umbrellas. Keep a basket

available so you can transport items that belong in other rooms in the house.

➐ D o l au n Dry e v e ry Day. Invest in a hamper

that enables you to sort clothing into different compartments, including lights, darks and delicates. This way the sorting is already done when it comes time for washing. Then aim to do a load a day so that you’re not faced with 100 pounds of laundry come the weekend.

backyard

chickens101

With more and more urban areas allowing citizens to raise chickens for eggs, there has been an explosion of backyard chickens. Chances are, you know someone who has their own little flock. Here is some basic info about raising and keeping chickens. G E T T I NG STA R T E D c h Ic k S o R h E N S? First,

decide what type of chickens you are going to raise - there are many varieties! Next, decide if you are going to raise them from chicks (requires a brooder for about 5-8 weeks until they develop feathers) or start with full-sized hens that can be let outside right away.

03.18.14 iwa n n a .c o m

w h AT k I N D o f co o p ? Even if

your chickens are going to range free, they will need to have a coop to roost in and to provide safety from predators (hawks, raccoons, cats, etc.) Coops can be bought commercially, DIY projects, classified ad finds, or something you cobble together from scraps (how about that old doghouse you are not using anymore?)

Whichever kind you choose, make sure that you will be able to clean it without too much trouble. Rule of thumb is to allow about 3-4 square feet per chicken inside the henhouse and 10 square feet per chicken in an outside run. w h AT D o c h Ic k E N S E AT ? Common chickens are

descendents of an omnivorous Asian jungle bird that fed on bugs, snakes, fruit, seeds, greenery, and small rodents. So chickens will eat pretty much anything! That said, you will want to provide your flock with a good balanced commercial feed and then treat them to your scraps including bones, veggies, fruits and more. Your yard will hopefully provide some seed and bugs, but be sure to include some grit (which chickens use in their gizzards to grind up grains, seeds, and bugs) and a calcium source, like oyster shell. w h AT A B oU T c o L D w E AT h E R? With colder than

usual temperatures this year, you might wonder what to do to keep chickens warm. Chickens actually do better in the cold than extreme heat. Just be sure to cut off any drafts by closing windows and doors, but also take care to leave some ventilation to prevent moisture build up, which could lead to frostbite. You may also want to supplement with plenty of cracked corn and other foods that will up their metabolism and help keep them comfortable. o k , w h AT A B oU T h o T w E AT h E R? As mentioned,

chickens have more problems in hot weather than in cold. Heat stroke, heat-induced stress and death can result when a chicken

is overheated. There are plenty of things you can do to help keep your birds cool. First, make sure they have plenty of shady spaces to rest in. You may want to put a fan in their coop or a shady spot to circulate the hot air. Some have found their chickens enjoy a sprinkler or kiddie pool when the mercury rises. You can also freeze milk jugs full of water to give them something cool to sit next to, and you may want to add ice to their water too. Also be sure to provide a spot where they can dig in the dirt and take dust baths to cool down. c h Ic k E N S A N D T h E G A R DE N. Chickens can

complement your garden in many ways. Their droppings make an excellent composting fertilizer and they are great for keeping garden pests at bay. You will want to be careful to block off areas that they may trample if given full access. Some people construct “chicken moats” that range from a fenced path around the garden to chicken wire “tunnels” between garden rows. Moats are a great way to get the pest control benefits without sacrificing your more delicate plants. They can also reduce the need to weed around the edge of the garden.

simple steps to live an organic lifestyle While the word “organic” typically demonstrates the commitment to an environmentally sound growing method for farmers, there’s an increased interest in finding ways to live organically beyond just food choices. It’s driven by the growing desire to make wise choices for the planet.

L

iving an organic lifestyle not only offers something to people of all ages, it can be achieved in the kitchen, garden or even during an outdoor activity. Here are a few simple tips to start living an organic lifestyle:

Ta k e s m a l l sT e p s —

Take the first step with your staple shopping ingredients. Consider replacing conventional products one by one with organic alternatives. Make foods like fruits, vegetables, milk and meat your first priority.

G r ow a n o r G a n ic G a r de n — Why not grow

your own organic vegetables and herbs? Plants like tomatoes, peppers, onions,

potatoes and cucumbers are easy to grow and can be easily maintained on a rooftop or patio garden. Plus, it’s a great way to teach kids where food comes from and how it grows.

read The labels —

Look for products with the “Certified USDA Organic” seal and read labels carefully to check out the main ingredients and any additives that may be included. The first ingredients listed should be common names and easy to pronounce.

➌ A ST E R . Require full sun for the most part and some species will bloom from spring until frost. The flowers can be white, blue, red, pink lavender, or purple. Butterflies love them for the nectar and caterpillars for their foliage. SU N F LOW E R . Tall plants best planted in fields and large open areas with full sun, but can definitely be added to the back or sides of smaller gardens. Sunflowers bloom in the summer and fall which make them very popular with migrating butterflies who love their large landing areas and many small flowers for nectar.

Many flowers compete with one another to attract butterflies, birds and bees for pollination, but at least two species of flowering plants have enhanced their ability to attract insects in unique ways. The titan arum (Amorphophallus titanium) is native to western Sumatra, where it grows in openings in rainforests. It is the largest unbranched flower in the world and can reach up to 15 feet tall. But this alone is not what makes the titan arum so special. It is unwise to step in close to get a whiff of this enormous bloom, as the plant gives off a rancid odor reminiscent of rotting meat. It is sometimes known as the carrion plant or the corpse plant for this reason. The plant has created this scent to attract flies for pollination. The rafflesia, which is native to southeastern Asia as well, is another plant that produces a rotting aroma to attract insects. The rafflesia has no stems, leaves or true roots -- it’s basically one large flower.

TIP Many animals and insects can be detrimental to the health of a garden. However, several animals are handy to have around and should be welcomed to the landscape.

n an effort to rid a garden of unwanted pests, gardeners may unwittingly scare away animals and insects that might just protect the garden from more ill-intentioned animals. Not every creature that scurries is out to get prized petunias or to devour tomatoes. In fact, many can prove beneficial to gardens.

Bats have a bad reputation, as people unnecessarily fear bats because they believe them to be carriers of disease. But many bats feed off of insects or fruits and will not harm a human. The average brown bat can eat 1,000 mosquitoes in an hour, so it’s easy to see why bats are good to have around. Mosquitoes are not only a nuisance but also

B AT S.

harbor potentially dangerous diseases. Bats also may eat certain rodents, which can cut down on the number of animals burrowing in a yard. F R O G S. Frogs and toads will prey on insects and make the local insect population more manageable. Toads eat mainly slugs, who feed on the leaves and fruits of many plants. Frogs and toads are attracted to water, so including a pond or another water feature in the garden will provide them with a habitat they like.

While it’s true that some birds can damage crops, many birds are content to feed on insects attracted to the garden, which helps to keep insect numbers in check. Chickadees, for example, will dine on aphid eggs, while larger birds may prey on mice or other rodents or simply scare them out of the garden. Jays and mockingbirds are known to be feisty and can even deter dogs and cats from a yard. Hummingbirds will sip on the nectar of flowers and help pollinate plants.

B I R D S.

Snakes in a garden can be disconcerting to some people, but snakes are ideal predators who feed on insects and rodents several times their size. Snakes are the right size and shape to invade the burrows of pest animals.

Butterflies and bees are responsible for pollinating the vast majority of plants. Avoid using pesticides that may diminish butterfly or bee populations. guarantee your garden starts off on the right foot As winter slowly winds down, many gardeners cannot wait to soak up the springtime sun and get their hands dirty in the garden. Such excitement is not just good for gardeners, but can benefit the garden in the months to come as well.

L

ate winter or early spring is a great time to get a head start on the gardening season. Even if gardening season is still around the corner, completing the following projects can ensure your garden gets off on the right foot.

C l e a r de b r i s

One of the best things you can do for your garden as winter winds down is to clear it of debris. Winter can be especially harsh on a landscape, and gardens left to the elements are often filled with debris once spring arrives. Dead leaves, fallen branches, rocks that surfaced during the winter frost, and even garbage that might have blown about in winter winds can all pile up in a garden over a typical winter. Clearing such debris likely won’t take long, but it’s a great first step toward restoring the garden before the time comes to plant and grow the garden once again.

examine the soil

Soil plays a significant role in whether a garden thrives or struggles. Examining the soil before the season starts can help gardeners address any issues before they plant. Ignoring the soil until a problem arises can turn the upcoming gardening season into a lost opportunity, so test the soil to determine if it has any nutrient or mineral deficiencies. This may require the help of a professional, but if a problem arises, you might be able to adjust the acidity or alkalinity of the soil and still enjoy a successful gardening season. Another way to examine the soil is less complex but can shed light on when would be a good time to get back to work. Reach into

Edge plant and flower beds, but be sure to use a spade with a flat blade or an edger designed to edge flower beds. Such tools will cut deep enough so grass roots that may eventually grow into the flower bed are severed. Depending on how large a garden is, edging can be a time-consuming task, so getting a head start allows homeowners to spend more time planting and tending to their gardens once the season hits full swing.

TIP Edge plant and flower beds, but be sure to use a spade with a flat blade or an edger designed to edge flower beds.

➍ the soil and dig out a handful. If the soil quickly crumbles, you can start preparing for gardening seasoning. But if the soil is still clumped together, it needs more time

to dry out before you can begin your prep work.

i n i t i at e e d g i ng

Edging is another task gardeners can begin as they get ready for the season.

F ig h t w e e d s

Though weeds likely have not survived the winter, that does not mean they won’t return once the weather starts to heat up. But as inevitable as weeds may

seem, homeowners can take steps to prevent them from turning beautiful gardens into battlegrounds where plants, flowers and vegetables are pitted against unsightly and potentially harmful weeds. Spring is a good time to apply a pre-emergent weed preventer, which can stop weeds before they grow. Though such solutions are not always foolproof, they can drastically reduce the likelihood of weed growth. Though gardeners might not be able to start planting their gardens in late winter or early spring, they can still get outside and take steps to ensure their gardens thrive once planting season begins. by m e t r o C r e at i v e C o n n e C t i o n

repair & replace window screens Window screens can let fresh air into a home while preventing insects and outdoor critters from making their way inside. But screens are far less effective at keeping critters out of a home when they’re damaged.

USE THE SCREWDRIVER

or awl to pry the edge of the existing spline that holds the screening material in the frame. Pull out the old spline and remove the damaged screening. ➍ MEASURE THE NEW screening from a replacement roll. Lay the screening down on the frame, ensuring there is overhang on all

sides. If necessary, use masking tape to temporarily secure the screening to the frame while freeing up your hands. This also works if you must replace screening vertically and cannot remove the window frame and make repairs on a flat surface. ➎ TA KE A NEW PI ECE of rubber spline and push it into the edge of the screen frame, securing a corner of the new screening to the frame. Continue to press the spline around the perimeter of the screen frame firmly into the groove with the screen rolling tool, which looks like a small pizza cutter. fter a long winter of snow and ice, many p e o p l e a re re a d y for the warmth and sunshine synonymous with spring. But dirty windows can block that sunshine from finding its way into a home. Washing windows can be quite an undertaking, particularly in those homes with many windows on multiple levels. However, there are several time-saving tips available that can cut the work considerably.

➊ Save window washing for

a cloudy day. Otherwise, the warmth and sunlight may dry the cleaning solution too quickly and you will be left with streaks on your windows.

➋ Vacuum windowsills and tracks first to remove a good deal of dust and debris. This will reduce the amount of dirt you smear onto the windows while cleaning them. ➌ Use a combination of a

sponge soaked in cleaning solution and a squeegee to get really clean windows. The squeegee helps to prevent streaks and cut down on the time it takes the windows to dry, all the while helping the windows to sparkle.

➍ Window screens may be the culprit behind dingy windows. Hose down the screens with water to clean them, using a mild cleaning solution if water is ineffective. ➎ Working with a partner

can make the task go much more quickly. One person can clean the exteriors of the windows while the other does the interiors.

➏ A mild dishwashing liquid

diluted in water can cut through dirt and grime. For stubborn dirt, wash windows with diluted ammonia or vinegar.

➐ Use a glass-cleaning tool to clean hard-to-reach windows. A telescoping cleaning tool and pad can make it safer to reach windows that are high up. by M E T R O C R E AT I V E C O N N E C T I O N

give your kitchen a Cooks can breathe a sigh of relief when they realize how efficient and attractive kitchen ventilation or a range hood can be. If you’d like to breathe easier, these facts and hints can help:

K

itchens with proper ventilation are much cleaner. Ventilation can stop particulates from settling on surfaces and damaging cabinetry and fabrics. A good vent can also reduce smoke, grease and other types of indoor air pollution that can harm your health and increase your cleaning chores.

Fou r b a s ic k i n d s o F k i t c h e n r a ng e h o o d s:

➊ Canopy Hoods—mount to the wall (aka Pro-style) or bottom of a cabinet (aka under-cabinet). ➋ Island Hoods—mount to the ceiling. ➌ Chimney Hoods—come with a decorative cover to hide unattractive ductwork. ➍ Downdraft Hoods—install behind the cooktop.

The hood should be at least as wide as the cooking surface to effectively capture smoke, grease and odors. Keep it clean. It’s wise to wash or replace vent filters every couple of months. If you cook frequently, they may require more frequent cleaning; most are dishwasher-safe. When shopping for new ventilation, look for the Home Ventilating Institute (HVI) label. It’s an independent third party that rates ventilation performance. If noise levels are important to you and your family, get a hood that exhausts more air (indicated by a higherlevel CFM) and operates at a lower/quieter speed. Another quiet-performance option is an external blower that can be mounted to an outside

wall, installed in the attic or on the roof. The hood should be installed as close to the cooktop as possible, within the manufacturer’s guidelines, so it captures the most smoke and odor. Duct size is important for optimum performance. It should be equal to or greater than the size of the hood’s duct outlet. Make sure the backdraft damper opens and closes completely and freely. Check both inside and outside the house to be sure nothing gets in the way of its movement.

lighting sets the stage for outdoor fun

TIP Outdoor lighting can play up the more decorative features of a yard, including flower beds.

According to the American Lighting Association, with a few updates to outside lighting, families can make even better use of their homes at night. Pool parties, dinners on the patio or barbecues with neighbors become even more memorable when outdoor lighting is added or improved.

Lighting is typically layered into a room or outdoor space in three ways: overhead, task and ambient. Even outdoors, where there are no typical boundaries and borders, those three layers are necessary. Outdoor

add some fresh color to kitchen cabinets

M

any homeowners dream of giving their kitchens a full-scale remodel. Though such a project can give a kitchen an entirely new look, that look does not come cheap. According to Remodeling magazine’s 2013 “Cost vs. Value Report,” homeowners can expect to spend more than $53,000 on a major kitchen remodel and recoup just below 70 percent of that cost at resale. So while the idea of a full-scale kitchen remodel might be a dream project, the cost of such an undertaking is beyond many homeowners’ budgets. But homeowners who cannot afford a full remodel can still give their kitchens a new look and can do so for relatively little money. Painting kitchen cabinets a new color or simply

giving fading cabinets a fresh coat of paint can instantly add life to a kitchen, giving the room an entirely different feel without breaking the bank. The following are a few tips for homeowners planning to paint their kitchen cabinets.

➊ ASSE SS YOUR EXISTING C A B I N E T S . Some cabinet

materials, including wood and metal, can be repainted without much of a fuss. But other materials, including plastic laminate, are not so amenable to repainting, and will likely require specialty paints. Homeowners with plastic laminate cabinets should first paint a spot or two with a sample paint, being careful to choose a spot that’s concealed. If the paint bonds well to the plastic laminate, then you can go forward and buy enough

paint to redo all of the cabinets. If the paint does not take, consult a professional to find a paint that’s likely to be a better fit. Expect this process to be one of trial and error.

➋ PLAN FOR ORNATE CABINETS T O TA K E A L I T T L E L O N G E R . Painting projects will go faster when cabinets have flat fronts, but they can take considerably longer when cabinets are unique and more detailed. If your cabinets are ornate, then factor this extra time into your schedule.

➌ R E M OV E T H E D O O R S A N D H A R D W A R E . When painting

cabinets, it’s best to essentially disassemble them, removing the doors, handles, knobs, latches, and any additional hardware. When removing hardware, be sure to set them aside in clearly marked plastic bags so it’s easier to reassemble the cabinets once the fresh coat of paint has dried. As doors are removed, number each door and its corresponding location, much like products that require assembly are numbered at the factory. This makes it easier to reassemble and ensures the cabinets and their hinges will align properly once you have finished painting.

➍ DON ’ T PA I NT DI RT Y SU R FACE S. Cabinet surfaces have

likely collected their share of dirt, grease and grime over the years, so you want to clean these surfaces thoroughly before painting. Once surfaces have been cleaned, rinse them off and give them ample time to dry.

S A N D T H E SU R FAC E S. Once the surfaces have been cleaned and are completely dry, it’s time to start sanding them. Lightly sand the doors using a wood sanding block, working to create a firm base to which fresh paint can easily adhere. Areas that are most exposed to wear and tear may require some

TIP Freshly painted cabinets can give a kitchen an entirely new and fresh look at a fraction of the cost of a full-scale kitchen remodel. extra elbow grease, and some areas may be especially flaky. When old paint is flaking off, this means the previous finish did not adhere very well to the surface, which is not necessarily uncommon in kitchens, where moisture and grease residue can make it harder for paint to adhere to the surface. In such instances, sand the flaky areas to the bare wood before spot-priming with a primer or sealer designed for areas with heavy staining. After all of the sanding is complete, vacuum the surfaces to ensure there is no leftover sanding dust before painting.

A P P LY P R I M E R - S E A L E R .

Primer-sealer ensures the fresh paint will bond well to the surfaces, preventing conditions like flaking in the future.

PA I N T T H E C A B I N E T S .

After the primer-sealer has been applied, it’s time to paint the cabinets. Begin with the inside edges and openings of the face frames, followed by the outer cabinet sides and then the front of the frames. Then move on to the cabinet doors and any drawer fronts you might be painting as well. Cabinets with more elaborate designs require closer attention to detail than flat cabinets. When painting, opt for thin coats, which dry more quickly and also create fewer visible brushstrokes. When applying multiple coats, allow the paint ample time to dry between coats. Four hours between coats is a good rule of thumb, and lightly resand all surfaces before applying the second and final coat of paint.

of paint has fully dried, carefully reassemble your cabinets and then enjoy the fresh and inexpensive new look that your freshly painted cabinets have created. by M E T R O C R E AT I V E C O N N E C T I O N

cultivate a herb garden

M

any people cultivate gardens both inside and outside of their homes with a focus on adding aesthetic appeal to their property. But a garden that boasts plants that are edible and pleasing to the eye is a possibility as well. Herbs are versatile, capable of lending great flavor to foods while also playing different roles in personal health and beauty. Herbs can be grown to perfume homes and bodies. There are herbs that are also purported to help

with ailments, from upset stomachs to anxiety. When planting an herb garden, you may want to pay particular attention to the types of flavors and smells you like in your home and cooking. This will help you to narrow down the types of herbs you will plant. Many wouldbe herb gardeners tend to start small to see what luck they have when cultivating herbs. Fortunately, herbs can grow well in containers indoors, provided the soil is amenable and there is plenty of sunlight. TIP Many people like to plant basil when starting herb gardens. Herbs will grow best in wellprepared soil. Make sure that it is rich in organic matter and drains well. Also, for plants like parsley, be sure to have deep pots or dig deeply in the garden to establish long taproots. Until the weather warms up, you may want to begin herb cultivation indoors and then transfer plants outside

during the summer. Basil, for instance, is a tropical plant that does well in warm conditions. Therefore, it will need to be kept away from drafts and get several hours of direct sunshine a day. Place most herb planters in a south-facing window of a home to ensure they get ample sunlight and to allow the soil to dry adequately between waterings.

With many herbs, leaf production will diminish on any stems that flower. It is essential to pinch off flowers that form to encourage the herb plant to continue producing leaves, which are the parts of the plant most associated with seasoning and aroma. by M E T R O C R E AT I V E C O N N E C T I O N

adjustable rate mortgages quickly gaining popularity An increasing number of consumers are beginning to reconsider adjustable rate mortgages (ARMs). For many, it can be the best option when it comes to financing a house. THE REASON

With interest rates moving higher, ARMs have burst back on the scene, offering low rates now and the certainty of a fixed rate for as many as 10 years. This is especially enticing to many Americans who don’t anticipate being in their home for longer than a decade. WHO BENEFITS FROM AN ARM

Industry experts suggest there are four groups in particular who should give the mortgage program a serious look: ➊ First-time home buyers who are looking for a starter house for now but have their sights set on a larger home to start a family within the next five to 10 years. ➋ Career mobiles who relocate regularly for their work. ➌ Empty nesters or those who plan to downsize once their children have moved out of the house in the near future. ➍ Financially savvy consumers who regularly follow the housing market and trends, and know what to look for and when to pull the trigger on a refinance. E X P E R T A DV IC E

“Adjustable rate mortgages have been used by many consumers very successfully for decades,” said Bob Walters, Chief Economist at Detroitbased Quicken Loans. “When looking at home loan options, consumers should discuss their financial situation and future goals with their mortgage banker or financial planner to make sure they choose the best home loan option for their specific needs. There is no one-size-fits-all answer.” Walters also points out that the average life of a loan is five to seven years and that most Americans stay in their home for 10 years or less. While fixed rate mortgages

can appear as the default choice for many, considering today’s rising rates and the fact that very few mortgages survive more than 10 years, consumers should carefully weigh their options. Tens of thousands of dollars could be riding on it. LEARN MORE

pros and cons to air duct cleaning Many homeowners consider having the ductwork in their homes cleaned. Mailers often tout the benefits of this service and warn of the potential hazards that could be lurking inside uncleaned vents and ducts. But whether or not air ducts need to be cleaned remains open for debate. A quick review of air duct cleaning can help homeowners make a more informed decision. W H AT I S DUCT C L E A N I NG?

Before looking into the advantages and disadvantages to duct cleaning, it is advantageous to examine the process involved when cleaning air ducts. There are two ways to have the ducts cleaned in a home: rotary vacuum brushing or high pressure air washing. Vacuum brushing utilizes a spinning brush to scrub dust and debris off the air vents and a vacuum to capture whatever is dislodged. High pressure air washing uses pressurized air blown through the air ducts. A truckmounted industrial vacuum is attached to the furnace, and all of the air register vents in the home are covered. Once all the air ducts have been blown clear, another air wand is fed into the end of the

hot and cold air supply lines. Dust and debris is then drawn backward into the vacuum. PR O S

One of the more obvious advantages of air duct cleaning is improved health and hygiene in the home. Those prone to allergies may find that routine cleaning helps ameliorate the problems of sneezing and watery eyes. Duct cleaning can remove allergens and dust. The Environmental Protection Agency says air duct cleaning is handy if there is a noticeable accumulation of dust and debris in ducts or if particles are actually released into the home from supply registers. If ducts are infested with rodents or insects, cleaning will make indoor air much safer. Mold is another factor to consider when determining if ducts need to be cleaned.

Mold spores floating in the air can lead to illness. Professional cleaning may be the only way to remove mold and mildew from the system. Homeowners who have fireplaces may find the air becomes dirtier faster. That’s because of the residue put into the air from burning wood and other fuel. This residue not only builds up inside of the chimney in the form of creosote, but also can form a sticky, sooty layer inside of ductwork. Cleaning the ducts can remove this soot. CONS

The EPA advises that no research has definitively shown that duct cleaning prevents health problems. Neither do studies conclusively demonstrate that particle (e.g., dust) levels in homes increase because of dirty air

ducts. This is because much of the dirt in air ducts adheres to duct surfaces and does not necessarily enter the living space. What’s more, dirty air that enters the home from outdoors or indoor activities, such as smoking or cleaning, can actually cause greater exposure to contaminants than dirty air ducts. There also is no evidence that cleaning ducts and components of the heating/cooling system will make the furnace or air conditioner work any more efficiently. Air duct cleaning is an

expensive undertaking. On average the cost of such a service can range from $400 to $1,000, depending on the extent of the cleaning and the size of the home. Cleaning the ducts also can be dirty and time-consuming. Cleaning may spread contaminants that were lodged inside of the vents throughout the air more readily. Some cleaning services will advise the use of chemical biocides to treat the interior of vents. These are designed to kill microbiological contaminants. by M E T R O C R E AT I V E C O N N E C T I O N

'The Original' Taylor Outside Woodfired Water Furnaces

T

here is a reason why Taylor sells more outdoor water stoves than anyone else in the world." Ron Woodle proudly supplies customers in Western North Carolina and the surrounding states with Taylor Outisde Woodfired Water Furnaces. Taylor is the most recognized name in the industry. The UL approved Taylor Waterstove is known to be the safest and most efficient way to heat your home with wood. This year celebrates their 28th year of partnering with Taylor Manufacturing, who have researched and engineered the Taylor Waterstove for more than 48 plus years in Eastern North Carolina. Taylor's superior design speaks for itself. The patented double by-pass system takes the hot smoke that escapes from other manufactured flue pipes and captures that lost heat up to 80 percent. No matter what you do to a fire box, once the heat goes out of the flue, it is forever lost. The Taylor Waterstove has a smaller fire box than other manufacturers because less wood is needed due to the double by-pass system efficiency. With our larger water capacity you can heat your home for hours, even when the fire is out. An example of this is 40- and 50-gallon hot water heaters. You may use only a few gallons of hot water

to take a bath, but with the back-up of several gallons it is easier and faster to recover the lost heat. The Taylor Waterstove eliminates the cost of heating your domestic hot water. Imagine endless, free hot water as you heat your home. Even in the summer, a few sticks of wood every two or three days can offer you endless hot water. Listed below are a few facts about the Taylor Waterstove: YOU ONLY USE HEAT AND HOT WATER ON DEMAND Other manufacturers have constant looping systems that use power and draw down the water heated in the tank, 24 hours a day, even when you're not using hot water or heating your home. This drives up operating costs and the consumption of wood. But with the Taylor, when the thermostat in the home calls for heat, the water is rotated through your heat exchange coil only on demand. By borrowing your existing blower in your furnace, the pump on the back of the Taylor Waterstove also turns on simultaneously, rotating the 190° hot water through the heat exchanger and blowing hot air evenly into your home. When a hot water faucet in the home is turned on, hot water is forced from the Taylor Waterstove by the home's water pressure through the domestic hot water coil, returning the now hot water to your hot water heater at 140°.

EASY TO INSTALL (SAVE $$$) The Taylor is simple to install, and with our Instruction Sheet you can do this yourself. There is an information DVD to help you make this decision. Installation help is available.

interior designer shares her top color tips When designing a home, color is one of the most powerful tools to add life to a space, says Genevieve Gorder, one of television’s best known interior designers.

Q

HOW DO I USE COLOR TO TIE A ROOM TOGETHER? GENEVIEVE SAYS: Use the

different elements that make up a color palette in a way that they balance each other. It’s a juggling act between neutrals, grounding shades, highlight and accent colors. Having the right balance among these different color components is the best way to tie a room together. Take a look at this snapshot of answers to the most frequently asked color questions, compliments of the designer.

Q

HOW ARE ACCENT COLORS APPLIED? GENEVIEVE SAYS: From the

palette, they are used for

emphasis. These paints are often bold or vivid and are used sparingly. However, if you play with the palette and create balance for this powerhouse tool, you can easily paint a whole room in an accent color.

Q

ANY TIPS FOR WORKING WITH BOLD PAINT SHADES? GENEVIEVE SAYS: Create a

sense of balance throughout the room, as you would with any color. For example, if I put the vivacious Valspar Luscious Green 6010-7 (one of my personal favorites) onto a wall, I would break up those big planes of color with enough highlights (whites and creams) and grounding colors (grays and blacks) so that it isn’t overwhelming. Neutrals would be chosen for the contents of the room along with small sprinkles of an accent color, like yellow.

Q

WHAT IF, ON THE FIRST STROKE, WE FEEL THE COLOR WAS A MISTAKE? GENEVIEVE SAYS: Allow a

couple of days to see how the color looks at different times of the day and in different lights, and consider the feeling it creates in the room. If after that you still feel you made a mistake, don’t let it deter you. Magnificence comes with risk. A very special color, one that will give you joy in that room for decades, is right there waiting for you to discover it. by M E T R O C R E AT I V E C O N N E C T I O N

APPLY PRIMER. Primer can serve many functions, not the least of which is its role as a bonding agent between the wall and the top coat of paint. Primer can also help conceal dark colors, prevent stains and increase the life expectancy of the paint job you are about to undertake. PURCHASE PAINTER’S TAPE. Painter’s tape can be especially valuable to novice painters. Painter’s tape makes it easier to paint smooth and clean paint lines, giving a room a more professional looking coat of paint without the cost of hiring a professional painter.

converting a kid’s room into an When a young adult leaves the comforts of home to set out on his or her own, homeowners are left with a bedroom that just calls out to be made over. However, the experience of a child leaving the nest can be bittersweet, and some parents struggle with the decision to renovate or leave the room intact. Converting a room can be an emotional process, but there are several different ways to put a newly vacated room to good use.

W

hat to do with a room may hinge on who still lives in the house. Another child, for instance, may be interested in “upgrading” to the room if it is larger or has amenities that the previous bedroom does not offer, like a better view or a bigger closet. Some have plans for a craft space or a library. Perhaps the room would be perfect for a “man cave” or a quiet sitting area. Keep in mind that the room may hold sentimental value for the child, so converting the space is not something that should happen abruptly or without prior notice given to the former occupant. Communication is key before the room can be permanently changed into a new room. To get started, follow these guidelines. ➊ STA R T S LOW LY. Broach the subject with the former occupant of the room to gauge his or her reaction to the idea. If your child is supportive, then the process may move along more quickly. If not, you may need to wait a little longer before starting the renovation.

➋ G O T H R OUG H T H E ROOM’S CONTENTS T O G E T H E R . Your child

may feel his or her private sanctum was violated if you simply box up belongings and ready them to be taken away. Instead, go through the room together and allow your son or daughter to pack away items of sentimental value. Other items can be donated. Consider which pieces of furniture might be kept and repurposed.

➌ KEEP SOME ITEMS OF VA LU E . Remember, you

don’t want your child to feel like his or her identity has been erased from the house. Find a way to incorporate something from the bedroom into the new design to pay homage to the person who lived and grew up in the room. Keep a square of removed wallpaper and frame it. Put some well-

read childhood books on a shelf. Have a place of honor for the first soccer trophy. This way when your child returns home there will still be a piece of the room’s former identity.

WO R K T H R OUG H YOU R N E W DE S IG N PL A N. Before

removing furniture and any items, draw up a detailed renovation plan and establish a budget. If the room will

become a guest room, the basics may already be there and you simply need to introduce new linens and a new paint color to transform the space. Consider keeping the room functional as a sleeping space in some way -- whether moving in a sleeper sofa or making a regular bed into a daybed -- so when your son or daughter comes

to visit, he or she will have a comfortable space.

M A K E I T S O P H I ST ICAT E D.

Adult spaces differ from children’s spaces in their sophistication. Starting fresh with more streamlined furniture and bolder colors in the room will give it a grownup look. Converting a child’s former bedroom into a

sealing a driveway can extend its life Installing an asphalt or a concrete driveway can be an expensive undertaking. To preserve the fresh, new look of the driveway, have the driveway sealed and then routinely seal it to keep it looking pristine.

A

good sealant can keep a driveway looking new longer and also can rejuvenate the appearance of an older driveway. Sealant can be compared to car wax. It provides an outer coating that will repel stains, stop UV rays from fading the driveway and help to protect against cracks and driveway degradation. Over time, asphalt driveways will begin to fade in color and the stone and rocks used in the asphalt mix will appear more prominent. By sealing the driveway, a homeowner can maintain its original dark color. Another reason to seal a driveway is to reduce the chance of freeze-thaw damage. This type of damage results when water penetrates the surface of

the driveway and then expands as it freezes. The expansion can cause cracks and fissures, as well as compromise the soil underneath the driveway, making it sink or become unstable. Sealed driveways help to keep water beading on the surface of the driveway, rather than being absorbed into the driveway material. When water no longer beads on the driveway, this is often an indicator that the driveway needs to be resealed. There are some guidelines to follow when sealing driveways. When starting, sealant should not be applied immediately after the driveway is poured. Concrete needs to cure for a period of up to one month before sealant should be applied. Fresh asphalt contains oils that eventually evaporate. The oils are what makes fresh asphalt pliable and soft. Once these oils evaporate, the asphalt gets harder and more durable. Sealers can prevent evaporation and may make the asphalt permanently soft. After the initial base application of sealant, the driveway should only be sealed every two to three years, depending on its condition.

Sealants are just coatings, and adding too many layers can cause the sealant coatings to crack and peel away. Sealing a driveway is a labor-

intensive process that’s best left to professionals. These professionals have the knowledge of technique and the right tools to get an even, thin coating of sealant. Remember, a driveway should not be walked or driven on for a minimum of 24 hours after sealant is applied. Weather conditions also can influence the

29

amount of time it takes for the driveway to cure. Having the driveway sealed prolongs its durability and appearance. It also can make the driveway less prone to staining and cracking, making this project a sound investment. by M E T R O C R E AT I V E C O N N E C T I O N

These versatile machines can reach speeds well over 40 mph, roll over muddy stream banks or wet grass without leaving a track, and provide the ultimate transportation on your next weekend camping or hunting trip. Great for work or play, UTVs can mow grass, plow snow, haul feed or soil, dump rocks and negotiate tough terrain with the same comfort as a pickup truck. After all the work is done, load it up, head off to the trails for the afternoon, or ride into the back country for a long weekend hunting trip. Packing out an elk or a deer is easy with a UTV.

hough certain roof issues, like shingles lost to inclement weather, are unforeseeable, many problems can be avoided with routine roof inspection. Checking roof conditions twice a year can help homeowners avoid potentially costly repair work or even more expensive roof replacement projects. Spring is a good time to inspect roofs, which are often at the mercy of harsh conditions throughout the winter. Heavy snow, ice and biting winds can do significant damage, making spring the perfect time to assess if any such damage occurred and address any issues.

may indicate leaks that need to be addressed. Homeowners with attics should enter their attics and look for signs of water damage, making note of any damp or wet insulation. This will let you know if water has been entering the attic all winter. Pay attention to the location of any wet spots or stains so you can match them up to the exterior of the roof later on. Musty smells also may be indicative of moisture problems, even if there are no visible leaks.

around dormers or skylights can also degrade, resulting in leaks. Check for spalling on masonry, such as the mortar of chimneys. Porous areas will allow water to infiltrate.

➌ G O DI R E CT LY O N THE ROOF AND CHECK. Work with a partner and carefully climb on the roof while someone holds the ladder below. Walk on the perimeter of the roof, looking for peeling or warped shingles, missing shingles, holes, or scrapes. If the roof is compromised in any way, it will need to be repaired. The problem will only grow more significant and repairs more expensive if damage is ignored. Sometimes a repair can be as simple as patching a leak with a new shingle and roofing cement. if your roof has made it through the winter unscathed and would like a second opinion or if you find there is considerable damage, contact a roofing contractor. This person will offer a professional assessment of what can be repaired or if the roof should be replaced. If your roof is metal or features clay tiles, you may not have the expertise to make repairs yourself and will need to hire a professional.

the roof, inspect the gutters and downspouts as well. Cracked or damage gutters will cause water to leak down the side of the home, potentially damaging the foundation. Clear any debris or leftover leaves from the gutters to ensure the rain can wash through unobstructed. A post-winter roof inspection can protect homeowners and their families from the elements and reduce the likelihood of potentially costly repairs down the road. by M E T R O C R E AT I V E C O N N E C T I O N

DI D YOU K NOW: A house constructed with a concrete frame, rather than wood, delivers superior protection in wind storms? The frame is constructed with a highly lauded system of pre-assembled ‘insulated concrete forms’ (ICFs) and produces walls with hurricane and tornado impact-resistance up to 250 miles per hour. These walls are also far more soundresistant, fire resistant, and deliver energy savings and occupant health benefits as well. By eliminating wood framing, all drafts, cold spots, and potential mold growth are virtually eliminated, according to leading ICF supplier, Nudura, and homeowners report energy bill savings up to 70 percent. Be aware that an upgrade to concrete walls is an option to be requested before construction begins. For builders, the newest efficiencies of this type requires keeping up with the latest technology and how to apply it. The switch to concrete walls represents just one of the major advancements in home construction today, so if energy savings, durability, investment value, and occupant comfort are at the top of your ‘dream home’ list, more information is available online at www. nudura.com.

Rhoades Car “4-wheel bicycle built for two.” Imagine pedaling side-by-side with your spouse, friend, team mate, fellow employee, or soul mate while enjoying great conversation along with a darn good workout from a recumbent (reclined) position. And once you return from the ride, your neck, shoulders, and back won’t be hurting from an uncomfortable upright ride. This is the way it was meant to be - bicycling in comfort! It can’t get any more stable than having 4-wheels under you. Choose the version with the canopy and electric pedal assist motor included for a sun shade with the breeze still in your face and that extra power when you need it - especially if you have any substantial hills to tackle. Prices starting at $3,215* SportPed e-Two is as green as it gets! This model features our aerodynamically designed tinted windshield for UV protection and wind resistance. Make it

a hybrid by adding our PD-750 electric drive motor option. Imagine a bicycle that you can pedal until needing a rest, and then you just push the throttle lever and have the electric motor take over until you’re ready to pedal again! You’ll get the exercise you need and the motorized assistance you want - when you want it! It simply can’t get any better than that! Prices starting at $4,080* GoBoy ComfortRide is a fun, easy way to shed a few pounds or just get some low-impact exercise. This is the Rhoades Car model for you! We created a 4-wheel quad bike that EVERYONE can ride. It’s called the Rhoades ComfortRide, and it’s called that for a reason - it’s COMFORTABLE, not to mention super easy to ride. Even people who have trouble balancing on a regular 2-wheel bicycle can enjoy this model. This model gives you the 4-wheel stability you have been looking for and an optional 20”

wide seat that feels like you’re sitting in your easy chair! Our padded 20” x 9” seat can handle 300+ lbs. Add in our 2” jig-welded steel frame and you can see why it’s the sturdiest 4-wheel bike ride out there! While this is the only model not long enough to allow for an electric pedal assist motor install, you can still customize this model to your liking with some of our other optional upgrades for a really cool look. Prices starting at $1,514* GoBoy X2 is a two person side by side bike with the stability of 4 wheels. Now you and your “pedal-mate” can get exercise and enjoy the great outdoors while you catch up on what’s going on in the world! This model is perfect for recreational use on your local greenway or even in the workplace, whether it be used on the job to haul people or supplies or if it’s used as part of a company wellness program by the

employees while they are on break. Either way, it’s a win-win for everyone involved. Not to mention you just won’t believe the fun you’ll have! There is cargo space in the back where you can add a cargo carrier to haul groceries or other things if need be. There are many options you can add to your GoBoy X2 to make it even more comfortable. You can add the deluxe padded seats with back rests, up to 42-speeds, a canopy, and more! You can even add an optional electric assist motor to kick in when you get tired or see a hill approaching!
