Linguistic Definition - The brightness of light source of certain wavelength as it appears to eye. - Relative quantity of radiation emitted by a celestial source - The intrinsic brightness of a celestial object (as distinct from its apparent brightness diminished by distance).
Zaha Hadid’s meaning of Architecture
Zaha hadid’s career as an architect throughout her buildings mostly about shifting from solid deconstructivism, to soft fluid luminosity. The light closes the gap between architecture and our perception. We sense the forms and materials with our eyes not directly but through the reflected Light often be interpreted as they initiated an attempt to unravel light. Zaha Hadid ‘s experiment on the truth, faith, knowledge, strength the mysteries of world throughout light can be seen throughout her and even hope. Light always gave a their life. In the process of seeking architecture projects.
Philosophy of Light
great impact to abstract matter like feelings, intuition, or inspiration. The impact always led one to move forward once they feel or see the light or pathway that may elevate them to another level of their life. The significant elements are knowledge and faith. Knowledge is an essence that can be felt same as feelings. To acquire this essence, it is all started from a ‘spark of light’ that moved their innnerself to search for an answer, and it is ‘curiosity’. Perhaps, answer does not have any limit to where or when or how they are revealed. It is when

knowledge, there are other kinds of knowledge acquired by them through obstacles, maybe even pleasures. Therefore, the intensity of light does not have any boundaries amongst their innerself. It is the matter of how they took a control of the luminosity of knowledge that they acquire. It is the matter how they value and apply the light in the, perhaps, right direction. Right direction in the meaning of non-self-destruct or destruct others.
From natural lighting to artificial lighting, it was deep rooted from her abstracted supremacist painting. So her early work, Vitra Fire Station, been constructed with distinct non-parallel lines of light on concrete wall. Although the luminaires emphasized on the sharpness of Vitra’s edge, the natural light diffused in softly and subtle. Zaha’s exploration on her own abstract painting has led her to various graphical

interpretation of luminosity and illumination. In order to intertwine the surroundings with her discovery, she studied and get fascinated by the abstracted urban transport and transform them into luminaire patterns. The Phaeno Science Centre is Zaha Hadid’s turning point in her exploration of luminaires. The centre was approached by a holistic design shifting from a sharp edges theme like in her early designs. The building that consist of a large concrete as the main shaded structure and a path for natural lighting which emphasize the
dark void under the concrete structure. The shape of the building was translated into the rhombus-shaped windows as the façade and transferred them inside on the ceiling as luminaires to make them coherent. Moving on to her next project which is the landscape Nord Park Railway Station, Zaha Hadid innovated a new period of light and fluidity in her oeuvre. Inspired by the local features of ice and glacial moraines , she increased the reflectance of her surfaces for complex mirror glass. Illuminates during night, the
structure actually radiates a significant energy. An Italian museum, MAXXI museum, emphasize the interior energy with its contrast of black and white structures and linear, dynamic luminaires. The diffusion of light flows throughout the building formed a calm ambience. Moving on from pure reflection to gold class of designing, Guangzho Opera House was built with thousands of starlight on the ceiling. It was pixelated pattern lights that evoked the impression of reflection in waterfall. Same goes to her other two projects that is Heydar Aliyer Centre and Nanjing International Youth Cultural Centre which shared the same characteristic that is luminaires on ceiling and golden, glossy atmosphere. Heydar Aliyer Centre, volume reflects light, overall shadow pattern of sun dominates. Glass façade mirror surrounding. Interior light flows out to exterior and it enhanced the building geometry from interior. The difference are the dynamic transition of materials.
Although Hadid limits her range of design to form and reflectance. However, she finds it hard to actually translate her visual painting language into lighting for architecture. Zaha Hadid stands on using the luminaire design to magnify the visual effects instead of concentrated on light itself as an essential dimension of architecture. (quote) That explaines a lot on her usage of tonnes of luminaires around her architecture. It showed that light does not necessarily form the space all the time. It needs the aritificial lighting to help translate what is essence into reality.
