President’s Message

Welcome to the Garden State Watercolor Society’s 48th Annual Juried Exhibition. This year our exhibition is displayed in the Marie L. Matthews Gallery, which is a perfect complement to our exhibit “Our World through Artists’ Eyes.” GSWS wholeheartedly supports the D&R Greenway Land Trust’s commitment to conserving our natural world. By purchasing art during this exhibit you will not only help support the arts, you will also support D&R’s worthy mission. Artists see the beauty that nature has to offer, experience our harsh urban environments and interact with the world’s many inhabitants. From those experiences artists internalize, and then react and create. The resulting art is a meaningful and sometimes profound reflection of our world. Susan Wientraub, our Juror, has worked long and hard to choose the works for this exhibition. We thank Susan for her time and experience exemplified in her careful selection of these paintings. GSWS is grateful to Linda J. Mead, D&R Greenway President and CEO, her wonderful staff and the D&R Greenway Board of Directors and advisors for their continued 2

interest and support for our organization. Special thanks goes to our own Judith Hummer, who co-chaired the exhibit with me. Her energy, enthusiasm, and strong work ethic is, as always, invaluable. I would also like to thank the GSWS Board and Member volunteers for always stepping up. Please take note of those companies and individuals who donated awards. Their support is essential to exhibits such as this. As artists, we love our “job” and to be recognized for our work. Our sponsors and donors have our never ending gratitude. These works are all original water media pieces, traditional transparent watercolor as well as other water-based mediums. Study the works and see what our Garden State Watercolor artist’s see, feel and express. Enjoy!

Serving as both the juror of selection and juror of awards for the Garden State Watercolor Society’s 48th Annual Exhibition is a responsibility that I take very seriously. When there are more entries deserving of acceptance than space allows and more works meriting recognition than there are awards to bestow, the task becomes even more daunting. The paintings in this exhibit represent an amazing variety of techniques, styles and genres. They exploit all the unique characteristics of the watercolor medium. They are examples of masterful technique, but more importantly they utilize that technique in service of the artist’s vision. Finally, they remind me of what I love about watercolor and all water media, and make me all the more eager to get back to my own easel and paint. I want to thank the officers of the Garden State Watercolor Society for all of their help throughout the jurying process. I also want to thank all the participating artists for sharing their work with the visitors who are fortunate enough to view this wonderful exhibit.

ABOUT D&R Greenway

Located in beautiful Greenway Meadows Park, the Johnson Education Center is a renovated ca. 1900 barn that is home to D&R Greenway Land Trust, a nonprofit organization, and their Marie L. Matthews Art Gallery. Originally part of the 200-acre Edgerstoune estate, the cedar-shake barn – now the Johnson Education Center – was home to cows and horses for its first fifty years, then safely sheltered General Robert Wood Johnson’s Rolls

Royce for the next half-century. Today, original hand-hewn beams and old wood create a warm and inviting atmosphere for enjoying art and programs. D&R Greenway’s mission is to preserve and care for land and to inspire a conservation ethic, now and for the future. They have preserved close to 19,000 acres in New Jersey – more than 20 times the area of New York City’s Central Park!
