Reading daily life over the world

Page 1

1.- You are going to read about a typical day in the life of three children from different countries. Read and find two differences between their routines and your own. A.- Craig Williams Hi, my name is Craig. I live in a typical English family. I have a father, mother and a sister and we all live together in our house in a town in the south east corner of England. The day starts at about 7 o'clock when Dad and mum get up. We have breakfast at 8 o' clock. I like to eat Rice Krispies (cereal) and jam on toast. I also drink a glass of milk. Dad likes to have a fried breakfast consisting of baked beans, bacon, tomatoes, mushrooms, two eggs and a sausage. After breakfast, my sister and I put on our school uniform. I wear grey trousers, a white shirt and a blue sweater. We all leave the house by 8.30. I take a packed lunch to school, which contains things like sandwiches, fruit and a bag of crisps. Sometimes my friends and I swap our food.

Dad's breakfast

My favourite subjects at school are science and history. My favourite topic in history is learning about the ancient Egyptians. I also enjoy PE (Physical Education) lessons - we play football, netball, cricket and sometimes we go crosscountry running. Mum picks us up from school at 3:15. Most days we go straight home and my sister and I watch the telly, play on our Wii, or play on the computer. Dad usually gets home about 6 o'clock. We eat together at about 6.30. My favourite meal is fish finger with peas and chips. I also like pizza which we have very often. I have to help mum wash up (wash the dishes) when I have eaten. I also have to tidy my bedroom. In the evenings, I usually do my homework before watching more telly. Mum helps me with my homework. My family likes to watch Eastenders, and Coronation Street, two English soap operas. I love my family very much. Written by Craig aged 10 years B.- Yoshita Sharma

Hi! I'm Yoshita Sharma. I am 10 years old. I live with my parents, granddad, sister, aunt and cousin in Noida, in the northern state of Uttar Pradesh, in India. 6:15 a.m.: Mama wakes me up. I brush my teeth, take a bath and dress for school. For breakfast, I usually have a glass of cold milk and fruit or a bowl of cornflakes. 7:15 a.m.: I take my huge school bag and run for my bus. My friends and their parents are already there. I greet everybody and then start chatting with my friends.

8:00 a.m.: At school, we have assembly. We say prayers and do judo, karate and yoga. At 8:30, we go to our classrooms to start lessons. There are 45 children in my class. We are studying nouns in English. Next is social studies. My teacher gives us long dictations. We have to write very fast to keep up. 10:20 a.m.: After a 20-minute recess, it's time to study Hindi. Art, my favorite class, is next. I'm doing pottery. It will take me time to perfect it. 12:35 p.m.: Time for another break. I go to the canteen for a late breakfast. I have chole bhatura, which is deep-fried bread with tomato sauce.

12:45 p.m.: After recess, I have science class. We are learning about motion.

School is over. We are all sweaty and tired, so we drench ourselves with our water bottles. Then we rush for the stalls that sell ice cream. 2:30 p.m.: At home, a chilled vanilla milkshake cools me off. I change my clothes and wash up. I'm almost lifeless from the heat. I watch TV while Mama feeds me my lunch of chapati bread, rice, vegetables and sweet curd. Then I take a nap. 6:30 p.m.: I rush to the park to play games with my friends. 8:00 p.m.: Back at home, I watch TV and then do my homework. For dinner, I have shahi-paneer, which is cottage cheese, rice, peas, and bread. 11:00 p.m.: I brush my teeth before bed. Good night! C.- Harmony Nwachukwu My name is Harmony Nwachukwu. I am 11 years old and in the fifth grade. I live with my family in Lagos, Nigeria. 5:45 a.m.: I wake up. The first thing I do is play on the computer. Then I say morning prayers with my family. I take a bath and help my younger brother, Goodnews, get ready for school. We have tea and bread for breakfast. 6:45 a.m.: The school bus arrives. I like taking the bus because it has airconditioning.

7:45 a.m.: I arrive at school. We have an assembly where I play the drum for the Nigerian national anthem. I also lead the Bible prayer. I like the morning assembly because it is part of worship. I love playing the drums, too. 8:30 a.m.: Classes start. I like math. When you are good at math, you can become a doctor or nurse. I want to be a nurse because I want to help sick people. Then we have English class. I don’t like this class because it’s sometimes boring. We write prepositions and work on our grammar. After that, we have social studies. 11:40 a.m.: It’s time for lunch. I eat rice, egg and plantains. Plantains look like large bananas but they are not as soft inside. You eat them cooked as a side dish 12:10 p.m.: Back to class for phonics. I like this English class because we are learning the sounds of words. Next, we have music class. I am learning how to play the recorder. I also get to sing. 2:15 p.m.: School is out. We have another English class after school. I like this one because all my friends are in it. 3:30 p.m.: I arrive home. I take a bath, then prepare food for my brother and me. More plantains! 4:00 p.m.: I do my homework. Then I do beadwork. When I see people wearing necklaces, it brings me joy. Later, I play on the computer and change into my pajamas. 7:30 p.m.: I eat dinner with my family. We have an omelet, toast, vegetables and beans. 8:15 p.m.: We say evening prayers. Then it’s bedtime.
