WELCOME DANIELLE BROWN, 27TH NATIONAL VICE PRESIDENT
On behalf of all of the National Associates and the National Executive Board, we’d like to welcome you to the 2018 edition of the Jack and Jill Associates Jewels magazine. The beginning of any year year is always filled with excitement, the unknown and a world of endless possibilities. It is a time where people are brimming with untapped ideas, confident, cocky even and undaunted by the promise of the future. As children, teens and others seeking an education get back into the rhythm of the new school year, this time of year reminds us here at Jack & Jill the importance of a quality education. Famed educator Mary McLeod Bethune reminds us that we must, “Invest in the human soul. We have a powerful potential in our youth, and we must have the courage to change old ideas and practices so that we may direct their power toward good ends.” With programs like The Mother’s Away Home Away Program (MAFH) – The National Associates Committee has a program to better serve students. We provide and support programs and projects that concentrate on educating those children and young people who come into the Jack & Jill orbit. We do this while working closely in the communities we serve, and while staying true to our mission of nurturing future African American leaders by strengthening children through leadership development, volunteer service, philanthropic giving and civic duty. I would be remiss if I didn’t take this opportunity to lift up our Associates. We would have little success without their commitment and devotion of our mission. Everyone knows that behind the accomplishments of any successful man, woman, business or civil society organization – are the unsung heroes. It could be a spouse, a colleague or business associate but in this case, it’s those who work outside of the gaze of the public, come in to work early, leave late and do whatever’s necessary to ensure that things work smoothly and projects come in on time. They are the oil that makes the organization move smoothly, doing the sometimes unpleasant jobs, sacrificing their time and resources, all the while making those of us tasked with running this organization look good. The women and men who have answered Jack & Jill’s call, worked hard, responded to our organization’s needs, solved problems, transformed challenges into opportunities and made us shine are our Unsung Heroes. We couldn’t do this without you. As you know, our programs fill a critical need, as we go about staying true to our mission of nurturing future African American leaders, through it all, our Associates are the straw that stirs the proverbial drink. For that we thank you.

WELCOME SPRING CAPERS
Greetings Associates of Jack and Jill of America, I am Spring Capers hailing from the Mighty Mid-Western Region. It is an honor and a privilege to serve as the chair of my region and as your National Associate Committee Chair. Our network is strong and powerful, and we are improving our network connections through our very own JJOA APP, social media Facebook and of course our magazine. PASADENA JEWELS
One of our most popular and great participation events is our annual Mother Away From Home program where we pack goodie boxes for our own “Group VI” college kids. On Saturday, October 21st we packed 20 boxes, personalized notes of encouragement and addressed birthday cards complete with our signature $2.00 bill gift. The boxes contained all sorts of goodies to remind our kids that they are not forgotten. We even had own Group VI’er, DeShawn Samad, who helped us pack. It was nice having her help and to share how she appreciated receiving the MAFH box when she was in graduate school. Thank you Jewels for all your efforts.
While most of our holiday celebrations center around our family and friends, it’s a joy to know that no matter how busy the Pasadena Jewels get around the Christmas Holiday Season we take out time to share some of our holiday treats with those less fortunate. As has become our December tradition we shared our baked treats with the families at the Union Station Family Center in Pasadena on Monday, December 18th.
We also added music to our kitchen cooking which was both fun and festive. Our dessert table was decorated with beautiful long stem red roses. There were sugar cookies, persimmon cookies, soft molasses cookies, peppermint bark,
The smells of sweet desserts filled the kitchen. Both staff and residents meandered to the kitchen to smell and see what was happening. It was hard to keep the kids away who wanted desperately to take a sample. I think at the end they and their parents enjoyed desserts before breakfast. But why not treat ourselves? decorated butter cookies, sour cream pound cake, Thanks to the cooks and kitchen helpers: Jewels Gloria, brownies...etc. The staff and residents truly appreciate Desi, Pam and Beverly. Thanks to the dessert elves who d our generosity. All in all, isn’t this what makes the delivered or dropped off their baked goods: Jewels holiday enjoyable and sharing with others? FELICIA WILLIAMS C H A R L E STO N ASS O C I AT E C H A P T E R The Associates membership began in 2011 where six (6) graduated mothers were inducted during a ceremony at Gullah Cuisine restaurant. This milestone came to fruition as a result of the desire of our leadership to continue our growth through the involvement of Jack and Jill graduated mothers. Currently, there are nine active associates in our group under the leadership of associate chair, Felicia Williams. The associates support the chapter in community services, fund raising, legislative and social activities. We acknowledge the many contributions of this group annually during our appreciation celebration. Most of all, they serve as guides for the chapter so lessons will be passed on and our legacy preserved.

The event was rescheduled due to snow storms in the Durham NC area. As part of the event mothers donated food to the backpack buddies program at WG Pearson Elementary School. The Chapter’s donations will allow approx 50 students to bring food home over the weekend. This program has an amazing impact because most of the children in this program would not have food to eat at all over the weekend. But God! The Florence Associates began the 2017-2018 program year with its annual program planning dinner at the home of Patricia Singleton Parr in September. The Fall season continued to be productive with hosting the annual “Time of Sharing Thanksgiving Dinner” for disabled residents at Gene’s Residential Home. The residents were served a traditional Thanksgiving dinner and entertained by the children and teens of the Florence Chapter. The Florence Associates Day of Service was an extremely successful project. The Florence Associates adopted Palmetto Youth Academy (PYA) as its Day of Service Project. PYA is a public chartered school with African American students as its
primary population. It originated to address the individualized needs of students with diverse backgrounds. PYA’s mission “ is to provide an opportunity for all students, regardless of income or ability to reach their full academic, social, and behavioral potential through an Florence Associate Chapter Chair Pat Parr individualized, innovative, educational approach that embraces diversity and is governed by parents and educators.” In order the assist with PYA’s mission, The Florence Associates collected and donated school supplies. After 18 months of chatting and planning I was proud to represent the Midwest at the long-awaited Associates Getaway in Cancun Mexico. This trip was well worth the wait and fulfilled all promises of a true relaxing getaway. From the beginning of the “Welcoming Reception”, associates were busy and excited to get to know one another. From there to get our morning going, we gathered for “rise and shine yoga” on the beautiful beach of the Paradisus Resort, which turned out to be the best thing for all of our aching bodies! Later that afternoon we delighted in “A Shoe Affair”, were Associates strutted their favorite kicks in our very own fashion show. The rest of the weekend was more of the same of fellowship and fun had by all. Associates always ask- What is the benefit of being an Associate? I tell them the Associates are like the alumni to a University. We are there to support, to engage and use the strength of our network to keep the legacy of the organization going. Networking is one of the strengths of our organization and I am always in awe of our awesomeness! DATES TO REMEMBER- dates may vary • Associates Appreciation Day • End of the Year and Bridging Ceremony National Convention July 25-29 Around the region we are still doing great things in service and support of our chapters. South Central Region Greetings from the South Central Region! It is my pleasure to represent the Associates of the South Central Region as the Associate Chairperson! There are many chapters in our region that have not yet accumulated enough former mothers to activate and Associate Chapter, however, to date, we have 18 active Associate Chapters in the South Central Region. Our Associate groups are busy “living, working, and playing together” for the benefit of our children, as well as our Foundation. We have participated, across the region in many fundraising efforts for the benefit of the Jack and Jill Foundation, Incorporated, as well as having assisted our chapters in their local and community operations and chapter fundraising efforts. All associate groups assist the local chapters in their community service endeavors as well as the “Super Bowl of Caring” that all chapters are involved in.
