NORTHWEST MISSOURI STATE UNIVERSITY | SIGNAGE AND WAYFINDING MASTER PLAN
INTRODUCTION Originally established in 1905, Northwest Missouri State University is a state-assisted, fouryear regional university that also offers graduate degree programs.
The purpose of the Signage & Wayfinding Master Plan is to deliver a methodology for implementing future signage at Northwest Missouri State University.
Northwest offers 127 undergraduate programs and 40 graduate's programs. The business, education, geography and agriculture departments graduate the largest number of students each year. Career Services offers an "Exploring Majors" fair where students can learn about different majors on campus and find which major is the perfect fit for them.
This document is not meant to prescribe specific locations or messages since these will vary based on when the signage is implemented. Instead, this Plan establishes a framework for future development of signage and wayfinding that will strengthen the identity and physical environment of Northwest Missouri State University's campus.
Northwest currently has around 7,000 students. This size of campus offers great opportunities for students to succeed socially, as well as academically. With a student to teacher ratio of 20 to 1, you never feel like a number and receive personalized attention from faculty. The Northwest Missouri Sate University Signage & Wayfinding Master Plan provides guidance for the creation of a comprehensive family of exterior wayfinding signs that ensure the University’s mission and traditions are reflected in the identity and communication on the physical campus. The Signage & Wayfinding Master Plan includes general recommendations for an integrated-system approach to vehicular directional signage and pedestrian directional signage.

NORTHWEST MISSOURI STATE UNIVERSITY | SIGNAGE AND WAYFINDING MASTER PLAN
DEFINITION OF TERMS In order to have an effective Signage & Wayfinding Master Plan, it is important to understand the interrelated nature of signage, wayfinding, and audience impressions. The following descriptions provide a foundation for a plan that meets the needs of the Northwest Missouri State University community.
SIGNAGE We use the term signage to mean the system of signs on campus that helps people navigate through the environment. The signage system is designed to address image, brand, and messaging needs. Signage design is successful when it carefully balances these aesthetic (image) and informational (message) needs. Signage performs both directional and identification functions. Directional signs provide navigational guidance and identification signs label destinations.
WAYFINDING The terms signage and wayfinding are often used together but they should not be thought of as interchangeable. Signage employs wayfinding messages, but it is only one tool within the program. Wayfinding is broader reaching; it is an action that occurs between a user and a place and it’s affected by all visual and informational cues that help users understand where they are. Beyond the physical setting, wayfinding for the University will begin well before a guest arrives. Tools such as the website, print collateral, and even personal conversations help audiences understand the totality of the campus as a place. These tools also establish the attitude of the campus and set the tone for a visitor’s experience. The physical wayfinding system is expected to meet the same standard for quality interactions and information sharing. It should reinforce the institutional brand while delivering clear and simple navigational guidance.

1.4
AUDIENCE AND IMPRESSIONS The Signage & Wayfinding Master Plan will enhance visitors’ impressions of the University. These impressions include those that occur the first time a guest visits, and those that occur every time someone arrives on campus. There are three key audiences—first-time visitors, initiated users, and the broader community. First-time visitors—whether prospective students, parents, conference attendees, or visiting athletes—are the most dependent on signage to guide them. Their initial impression will be an introduction to the physical surroundings. A simple and straight-forward message system will direct them to destinations, minimize confusion, and make them feel welcome. Initiated users include current students, faculty, staff, and others who regularly spend time on campus. These users rely less on the navigational aspects; their relationship with signage is more about “place making.”
The third audience group is the broader community. As the University's neighbors, this group will be positively affected by the signage and wayfinding that promotes campus identity while integrating with the scale and aesthetic of the surrounding areas. The Signage & Wayfinding Master Plan embodies a cohesive spirit that ties together a diverse and culturally-rich community and underscores the University's physical relationship to the community.

PROJECT PROCESS The Signage & Wayfinding Master Planning process for Northwest Missouri State University engaged a wide range of participants from the campus community. Throughout the process, which began in the summer of 2015, the design team met with the University to gather information and research, share and refine designs, and gain design approvals from the Steering Committee. Comprised of leaders in Facilities, Communications, Admissions, Campus Safety, Academics, and Financial departments, the Steering Committee was guided by Allen R. Mays, Jr. Capital Program Manager. The Signage and Wayfinding Master Planning process was structured through the following phases: 1.
Observations and Key Recommendations
2.
Concept Design
3.
Design Development
4.
Wayfinding Programming Methodology
5.
Final Master Plan Document
1. OBSERVATIONS AND KEY RECOMMENDATIONS During the Observations and Key Recommendations phase, the design team toured the campus in order to gain a more thorough understanding of user paths, circulation, and parking. Summary observations were then shared with the Steering Committee for confirmation. The Steering Committee participated in a Vision Session that further explored goals and objectives and informed design solutions suggested in later phases. Lastly, high-level recommendations were developed to inform the overall system design and function.
2. CONCEPT DESIGN During the Concept Design phase, research, goals and objectives identified during the previous phases of work were synthesized into a design framework for the final signage and wayfinding solutions. The design team presented three schemes to the Steering Committee for feedback and response in an on-campus workshop. The committee provided key feedback that resulted in select schematic refinements that were shared with President, John Jasinski, and Senior leadership. Senior leadership at Northwest Missouri State University then identified a scheme for development based on the scheme’s seamless integration with the campus, approachable feel and reinforcement of Northwest Missouri State University’s brand.

3. DESIGN DEVELOPMENT After receiving direction on a final concept design, the design team revised, refined, and expanded the concept design to encompass the entire family of exterior signs. Working with the Steering Committee, the team finalized critical decisions about design details, nomenclature, and message criteria, such as the relationship between parking and destinations and refinement of sign dimensions, materials, and typography.
4. WAYFINDING PROGRAMMING METHODOLOGY A critical component of this signage and wayfinding plan was to establish a consistent programming methodology to provide guidance on the location and messages of future signs. This task was completed simultaneously with the design effort. During the Programming phase, the Design Team worked with the university to establish a clear rationale for exterior sign locations. The system of signs and messages was designed to reinforce the institutional brand and deliver clear and simple navigational guidance.
During this phase of work, the Steering Committee prioritized destinations and circulation paths and determined the criteria for defining primary building entrances. The Steering Committee also finalized critical decisions about nomenclature and message criteria, such as the relationship between parking and destinations.
5. MASTER PLAN DOCUMENT The master plan serves to codify the signage and wayfinding process and is a reference document for future modifications or additions to campus signage. This Master Plan Document establishes and documents: • Guidelines for the use and implementation of the new signage system • Criteria for the design and programming of each exterior sign type • Descriptions of the wayfinding methodology
Observations To better understand the current signage and wayfinding strategies on campus, the design team analyzed the campus setting, circulation patterns, and sign types. The qualitative and quantitative information gathered during this phase is represented in the images and diagrams that follow. Observations in this section were reviewed and confirmed by the Steering Committee.

Exterior Wayfinding Programming The wayfinding strategy derives from collected data, observations and analyses, and the concurrent development of the Campus Master Plan. Building Nomenclature and Sample Trips are based on this new plan.

5.1
NORTHWEST MISSOURI STATE UNIVERSITY | SIGNAGE AND WAYFINDING MASTER PLAN
WAYFINDING METHODOLOGY ADVANCE WAYFINDING Advance wayfinding information inspires confidence, reduces anxiety, and helps visitors navigate a new place more quickly and efficiently. Once at a destination, the system of signs and messages reinforce this objective. Wayfinding begins before a visitor arrives at a destination, and signage is only one tool in the wayfinding continuum of experiences and information that guides people to points of interest. Web sites, print collateral, event advertising, and personal conversations are other examples of wayfinding tools that help guide audiences before they arrive.
ON-CAMPUS WAYFINDING On-campus wayfinding information is designed for first time or infrequent visitors. Signs cannot and should not list every possible destination. This would result in confusion and illegibility, especially for those first-time visitors, looking for the highest level of information only. Therefore, a hierarchy of destinations is applied to Northwest Missouri State University’s wayfinding program, based on the importance to visitors, new students, and community. The system of signs and messages reinforces the institutional brand while delivering clear and simple navigational guidance.
MESSAGING Members of the Design Team, Steering Committee, and Senior Leadership carefully devised a methodology for the messaging displayed on campus signage. In all cases, it is assumed that the target audience for vehicular and pedestrian signage will be first-time visitors or those uninitiated or unfamiliar with campus. Vehicular signage text will be limited to 6 lines. For pedestrian signage, the limit is only 8 lines. Therefore, it is critical to prioritize information for display. The following parameters were set by the Committee. Because visitors arriving by vehicle are seeking restriction-free parking in proximity to the final destination, key destinations that have an obvious public interface (e.g., Visitor Center, Student Union, Activity Center) or are a destination where a visitor might obtain important services (e.g., Visitor Center, Administration Building, The Station) were identified by the Steering Committee. If additional space remains, vehicular signs will display the names of proximate campus buildings that are likely visitor destinations. Vehicular signs will display only the names of buildings that the driver has not already passed.
Similar priorities are established for pedestrian signage. Similar to vehicular signage, pedestrian signage will prioritize building identification for those buildings most likely to attract first-time visitors to campus. The goal is not to list every building name on each sign; rather, it is to help those unfamiliar with campus navigate unintuitive routes to key destinations.
