introduction The Signage and Wayfinding Master Plan provides guidance for the creation of a comprehensive family of ground-mounted exterior signs for the Post Area of the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute in Front Royal, Virginia. This document presents the strategic planning and programming process related to the signage system including design drawings, descriptions and placement criteria. It also guides the organization of sign messages and wayfinding methodology.

be thought of as interchangeable. Signage employs wayfinding messages, but it is one tool of the program. Wayfinding typically begins before a visitor arrives at campus. Pre-arrival wayfinding tools include websites, maps and personalized instructions. These tools set the tone and expectations for a visitor’s experience. Once on campus, the physical wayfinding system is expected to meet the same standard for quality interactions and information sharing. It should reinforce the institutional brand while delivering clear and simple navigational guidance.

building identification signs, and the research, goals and objectives identified for the project. The design team presented concepts to the Steering Committee for feedback and response, and the committee provided guidance that resulted in schematic refinements. Design Development After receiving approval of the concept design, the design team revised, refined, and expanded the concept design to encompass the entire family of signs. These were synthesized into a design framework for the final signage and wayfinding solutions. Working with the Steering Committee, the team finalized critical decisions about design details and refined the dimensions, materials, and typography.

existing conditions To better understand the current signage and wayfinding strategies on campus, the design team analyzed the campus setting, circulation patterns, and sign types. The qualitative and quantitative information gathered during this phase is represented in the images that follow. Observations in this section were reviewed and confirmed by the steering committee.

CAMPUS GATEWAYS Observations
Recommendations
•
Gateway signage is not in scale with adjacent gateway elements — walls, landscaping, fences, etc.
•
•
Messages are too small to read at the speed and distance for those passing in vehicles.
Design cohesive gateway elements as part of the gates 2 and 3 expansion projects. Integrate signage elements with other gateway elements.
•
Delete “National Zoological Park” from the sign.
•
The use of “National Zoological Park” as part of the sign message may give the appearance of a public non-restricted facility.
•
Reference Smithsonian brand standards for acceptable logo usage.

VEHICULAR DIRECTIONAL SIGNS Observations
Recommendations
•
Carved wooden signs require regular maintenance.
•
•
Directional signage for vehicular traffic contains too many messages for driving decisions.
Signs should be limited to information critical to a motorist’s next decision.
•
•
Messages are too small to read at the speed and distance for those passing in vehicles.
Text should be appropriately sized and placed for legibility.
•
•
Little guidance is given to visitors at key decision points (i.e., points that require a motorist to turn or continue on a path).
Vehicular information at key decision points should direct visitors to parking destinations where more detailed wayfinding signage will be provided.
•
Arrows are illegible and confusing.

BUILDING IDENTIFICATION SIGNS Observations
Recommendations
•
•
Continue to replace older building identification signs with new design standard.
•
Develop a smaller building identification sign type for secondary destinations.
New building identification signs have been implemented on portions of the campus in conjunction with master plan construction projects.
•
Old signs remain on other parts of campus.
•
New sign use durable, low-maintenance materials, and accommodate a panel change if required.

MISCELLANEOUS SIGNS Observations
Recommendations
•
Regulatory signs are old and showing damage and wear to both structure and paint.
•
Investigate replacing regulatory signs as funds become available to match the new sign system.
•
"Authorized Personnel" messages are inconsistently applied from sign to sign.
•
Replace street signs with new sign type as indicated in Design Guidelines.
•
Several street identification signs are leaning and not level.
•
•
Temporary signs are used for wayfinding.
Temporary sign should be used sparingly – improvements to the wayfinding system should minimize the need for temporary messaging.
•
An assortment of inconsistent sign types distracts from the campus image and increases confusion.

wayfinding methodology A clear wayfinding methodology simplifies navigation through adherence to a consistent framework of destinations, nomenclature, and sequencing. Through the course of the project, several campus-wide determinations were made to aid campus navigation.

design guidelines The goal of the Signage and Wayfinding Master Plan is to create a uniform family of signs to convey clear directional messages to visitors. This goals comprises both functional and aesthetic concerns – the need for a signage program that builds brand identity and for a wayfinding system that efficiently moves people through the publicly-accessible Post Area. An appropriate hierarchy of sign types guides visitors to their final destinations. Each sign type serves a unique and important function.
