Longer opening hours for Padworth Recycling Centre Site to open at 8am from April West Berkshire residents will soon have more time to recycle and dispose of their rubbish at Padworth Recycling Centre. The Recycling Centre will be open every day from 8am to 6pm as part of a pilot scheme beginning next month. Victoria Park Victoria Park is at the heart of our community in Newbury and it was very sad to see it being desecrated by the illegal encampment last month. But a fantastic combined effort by Newbury Town Council, the Police and local residents saw this being moved on in double quick time and a speedy clear up of the rubbish and damage that was left behind. That aside, thanks to significant investment over the past four years, Victoria Park is now one of the finest public green spaces in the

A wilder North West Hampshire Anyone who follows my regular Nature Notes on Facebook and Instagram will know that I have a tendency to show off our green spaces and beautiful countryside at any given opportunity, however we must do more to aid nature’s recovery. That’s why I’m working with our regional Wildlife Trust to help create a network of wildlife stretching across our streets, towns and countryside. They’re areas where nature can thrive such as wildflower corridors along our roadside verges and green walls and roofs in new developments.

Valley Borough Council (North West Hampshire Constituency)

Elections On Thursday May 2, residents will go to the polls to elect district councillors to sit on West Berkshire Council and choose who they want to represent them on town and parish councils. Polling cards have been sent out and will be dropping on to doormats in the next few days. Residents are able to vote by post if they prefer or apply for a proxy vote which allows another person to cast their vote for them. The deadline for new postal votes and changes to existing postal vote details is was Monday April 15, and the applications to vote by proxy was submitted by Wednesday, April 24. A list of candidates standing for election in each ward will be published online. More information about the nomination process for candidates can be found in West Berkshire Council’s Guide to Election Procedures, which can be found on its website. There will be a number of changes in May compared to the previous local elections held in 2015. Following a review by the Local Government Boundary Commission for England, there will be 24 wards across West Berkshire instead of the current 30 and 43 councillors instead of 52. The review was conducted both to reduce the number of district councillors and to adjust ward boundaries so that each councillor represents a similar number of residents.

Find out more information about Parliamentary Constituencies. Changes to towns and villages and their populations had led to disparity between how many residents councillors had been representing. More information about the new wards can be found on West Berkshire Council’s website. For more information about registering to vote, visit www. gov.uk/register-to-vote West Berkshire Council’s electoral services team is currently booking polling stations, arranging staff for polling stations and the count, as well as making sure everyone who wants to vote can do so.

Elections take place every four years for Hampshire County Council and the next elections are scheduled for May 2021. The Basingstoke and Deane borough is represented by ten county councillors. The last European Parliamentary Elections were held on Thursday, 22 May 2014. This is for the South East Region and covers the whole of Basingstoke. Elections for the new Police and Crime Commissioner for the Hampshire Police Authority took place on Thursday 5 May 2016. Police and Crime Commissioners are elected every four years, with the next elections scheduled for May 2020.

Electoral Services plan and manage all borough and parish elections within the Basingstoke and Deane area. Members of Parliament are elected to the House of Commons every five years. The Basingstoke and Deane Borough is covered by the Basingstoke Constituency (which gives away Wards to Hart District Council (North East Hampshire Constituency) and Test

Nearly half of women in the UK have lost full bladder control By Theresa Fleetwood, Founder of Andresa Aesthetics

Over 40% of us are living with urinary incontinence, and that’s a conservative figure. We know how profoundly embarrassing, debilitating even, that living with this condition can be. Symptoms can range from embarrassing “Oops” moments when you laugh, cough, sneeze or just “want to go” but don’t get there in time, to complete incontinence with total reliance on pads. Social anxiety (or avoidance), depression and relationship breakdown are just some of the knock-on effects; we understand that it really isn’t possible to overestimate the devastating impact that such a condition can have on a person’s life. And one thing is almost a guarantee – it will get worse with age.

The Emsella could improve your quality of life in just three weeks. There is now, however, a non-invasive physiotherapy-style treatment program that can improve your quality of life in just six 30-minute sessions over three weeks. You remain fully-clothed throughout this medical-grade, comfortable treatment which is endorsed by gynaecologists worldwide and FDA-approved. And it has a success rate of over 95%, with urinary leakage often being completely resolved. During each 28-minute session, you remain seated on the Emsella chair whilst the muscles of the pelvic floor are stimulated by High-

Intensity Focused Electromagnetic (HIFEM) energy to contract over 11,000 times, restoring neuromuscular control. Not only that, but the entire pelvic floor musculature is involved, not just the subset that can be exercised with voluntary contractions. This results in a powerful improvement in muscle tone with every session.

Benefits of Emsella

The results really are quite staggering. Here are what some of our ladies have said: This treatment is life changing! After just one week of two treatments I could feel the difference in terms of support in my pelvic area, and after the full six sessions in three weeks I am able to trampoline with my kids without having a small accident. It is so liberating! Carol

We recognise that cold-calling into a clinic that you don’t know, and talking about such a personal condition to people that you’ve never met can be overwhelming. We offer a call-back service whereby you can specify a date and time for a discussion with a specialist who has in-depth knowledge of all degrees of incontinence. We also offer a free-of-charge consultation service in a private suite, during which you get an opportunity to try out the treatment, and there is no obligation to proceed further. Our clinic is discreetly tucked away in rural Berkshire, and you can rest assured that you will be treated with the dignity and respect that you deserve.

If you would like to find out more about this unique, life-changing treatment or would like to book a complimentary and confidential consultation, call 01635 800183 or email info@andresa.co.uk . www.andresa.co.uk

The real test was having my sister come to stay.We laugh together so much that I usually have many embarrassing oops moments, but not anymore. Since having the three-week course of Emsella treatments I feel I have control again - I cannot recommend this treatment enough. Ann

Casa Bezzia 7 days in watercolour! Casa Bezzia is a beautiful converted Barn, which is well equipped, spacious and bright in northern Italy, just 50km from Parma and where owner, Sylvia Bell, runs her painting holidays. The house is situated in the lower Apennines near the small medieval fortress town of Bardi, which dominates the Ceno valley. There are four tastefully decorated rooms, each with its own artist-theme – Dufy, Degas, Klimt and O’Keeffe – as well as two bathrooms, a dining room, kitchen, and small garden.

First Impressions It has been an amazing and enchanting opportunity to meet Sylvia, a British born enthusiast in art! Casa Bezzia has been a very long held desire of hers and since her retirement, she has been able to start an Art Holiday Painting Activity Centre. With a background in the hospitality industry and later as a career nanny, Sylvia has been very fortunate to have had a wide knowledge in culinary topics, art, as well as people and places. Her welcome and attention to detail is second to none. From arrival till departure, there will be a “nice surprise” attached to your day.

Move and Improve Spring is finally in the air from the scents of fresh blooms to birds chirping and it is so nice to finally look forward to some sunshine and warmth.

Whilst spring-cleaning might be a bit of a drag, just think of all the new items you can bring into your home once you clear out anything that doesn’t spark joy! A change of season is always the perfect excuse to infuse a little newness into your home, courtesy of the hottest trends. We tapped several design experts, from bloggers to designers, to disclose the trends they’re most looking forward to bringing home this spring.

Prepare to be inspired

Pops of Pink People's love of millennial pink hasn't faded, no matter how many trend forecasters have tried to declare it dunzo. “Adding a bright pop of pink.

2

Clusters of Pendant Lights Go for multi-pendant fixtures, pendants, especially the ones that are made of natural materials. It’s pretty spectacular when done right and the natural materials will tone down any over-the-top look and feel.

3

Floral Wallpaper, Freshened Up If you love plants but just end up killing all of them, maybe you should consider utilising floral wallpaper and not just the small prints or murals that were previously popular. Instead, these are large-scaled prints that surround us with nature’s beauty.

4

Put a Bird on it! Show your love for nature by decorating your home with birds decoration. It is range of birds decorations from origami, stickers and metals.

Rattan, But Make It Modern

7

Mixed Metals

The perfect backdrop for spring flowers! You can also easily transition them to autumn by adding in some velvets and other warmer colours as the temperature cools down.

Rattan started to make an appearance in 2018, but this spring, it's set to take the interior world by storm! Forget the more simple 1970s lookrattan has been given a seriously modern update. Think peacockinspired bedheads, wicker storage units, and rattan chrome chairs:

Brass has always been popular, however, silver tones are looking fresh and luminous, but that doesn't mean that brass is dead. It just meas that 2019 is the year of mixing metals.

Spring is also the season of picnics with friends and family.

Leek soup Is a very versatile ingredient which can give a delicious aromatic taste to several recipes.

Tasty Season After a long winter there's nothing more welcome than celebrating spring with the sight and the flavor of new colorful, tasty seasonal ingredients: asparagus, broad beans, peas, radishes, green beans, spring onions, courgettes, strawberries, flowers, but also the last artichokes.

FOOD Spring

Season of delicious flavours and rainbow colours shapes.

Barbecue time! Spring is also the season of the first barbecues and picnics with friends: a wonderful time for cooking, a perfect time of year to indulge in so many different dishes because it is not too hot to spend time around the oven and stove and the ideas to experiment are aplenty. Consuming seasonal products is essential for a variety of reasons: product quality, environmental sustainability, as well as economic savings. In spring it becomes even more important to cleanse and nourish the body after the colder months.

Asparagus

And it is not difficult, given that greengrocers' stands are a rainbow of colours and shapes with Vegetables such as artichokes, arugula, asparagus, beets, bok choy, carrots, fennel, fava beans, herbs, leeks, salad greens, morels, onions, peas, new potatoes, radishes, ramps, rhubarb, scallions and spinach.

Fava beans have their best time from march onwards, and can be used in a variety of recipes. We suggest you make a tasty cream to combine with bread, chips or croutons.

Asparagus is rich in vitamins and minerals, it has detoxifying properties.

This is why it is one of the most popular vegetables of spring, as it can be the protagonist of many recipes from classic risotto to quiches. Asparagus are excellent just boiled and seasoned with extra virgin olive oil, you can preserve all their nutrients and flavour. If you want experiment something new, try making a delicious vegetarian tartare: steam the asparagus, let them cool, cut them into rings and season with oil and salt. Then serve them with a sauce prepared with mustard, oil, vinegar and minced capers.

Rhubarb is a plant with an intensely tart flavor and velvety texture, it is a popular ingredient in pies and cakes, cooked down into compotes, or simmered and turned into tart sauces or syrups.

Vegetarian Week

National Vegetarian Week 2019 runs between 13-19 May and will highlight to the wider public the benefits and pleasures of a meat-free diet. As more people look to make lifestyle changes, eating veggie is increasing in appeal and National Vegetarian week aims to show to communities and schools across the UK that vegetarian food can be vibrant and exciting to eat. Endorsed by the Vegetarian Society, events will be held across the country to illustrate the recipes which make veggie food accessible and inclusive to all. Meat-eaters can still enjoy a vegetarian meal and many people have already adopted meat-free Mondays in to their diet. Following on from the success of previous years, grants will be available to communities and schools to help them stage an event to showcase National Vegetarian Week. Whether for health benefits, cost or animal welfare concerns people opt for vegetarian food for personal reasons. National Vegetarian Week offers a chance to dismiss any lingering myths around vegetarian food and its limitations. Instead it is a great opportunity to reach out to people across all ages and all communities and show them how easy to make and how

Dr. Michael Greger M.D. FACLM

vibrant veggie food can be. Dr Greger says … Do You Have to Combine Plant Proteins at a Meal? Where do you get your protein? Protein contains essential amino acids, meaning our bodies can’t make them so they’re essential to get from our diet. But other animals don’t make them either. All essential amino acids originate from plants and microbes, and all plant proteins have all the essential amino acids. The only truly “incomplete” protein in the food supply is gelatine, which is missing the amino acid tryptophan, so the only protein source you couldn’t live on is Jell-O. According to data from the Adventist Health Study, those eating plant-based diets average about twice the estimated average daily protein requirement. Those who don’t know where to get protein on a plant-based diet don’t know beans... (Get it?) That’s protein quantity, though what about protein quality?

Local Buzz is delighted to welcome Dr. Michael Greger, a physician, author and professional speaker on public health issues to share his blogs in every issue. He focuses on the best available balance of evidence from the peer-reviewed scientific literature. Both his latest books, How Not to Die and the How Not to Die Cookbook, became instant New York Times Best Sellers. 100% of all proceeds he has ever received from his books, DVDs and speaking engagements have always and will always be donated to charity. 34

It is true that some plant proteins are relatively low in certain essential amino acids. So, about 40 years ago, the myth of “protein combining” came into vogue literally, in the February ’75 issue of Vogue magazine. The concept was that we needed to eat so-called complementary proteins together (for example, rice and beans) to make up for their relative shortfalls. However, the myths that plant proteins are incomplete, aren’t as good as animal proteins, or need to be combined at meals have all been dismissed by the nutrition community decades ago. It turns out our body is not stupid. We maintain pools of free amino acids that can be used to do all the complementing for us, not to mention our body has a massive protein recycling program. Some 90 grams of protein are dumped into the digestive tract every day from our own body to get broken down and reassembled, so our body can mix and match amino acids to whatever proportions we need, regardless of what we eat. It’s practically impossible to design a diet of whole plant foods that is sufficient in calories but deficient in protein. Luckily, it is now widely acknowledged in the medical community that plantbased diets provide all the protein and nutrition we need.

Smile month National Smile Month is the largest and longest-running campaign to promote good oral health. Together, with thousands of individuals and organisations, it highlights three key messages, all of which go a long way in helping us develop and maintain a healthy mouth. They are: • Brush your teeth last thing at night and on at least one other occasion with a fluoride toothpaste. • Cut down on how much sugary food and drink you have and how often you have them. • Visit your dentist regularly, as often as they recommend. Ultimately, the aim is to help us achieve good physical and mental wellbeing by improving our oral health.

National Smile Month 2019 takes place between 13 May and 13 June.

The campaign encourages dental and health professionals, schools, pharmacies, community groups, colleges and workplaces. In fact, anyone with an interest in good oral healthcare to join in and help us educate, motivate and communicate positive oral health messages and improve the quality of smiles all around the world. With the help and enthusiasm of those who are passionate about promoting healthy lifestyles and improving the quality of life for others, National Smile Month sees thousands of events and activities, educating and engaging local communities about the importance of a healthy mouth. National Smile Month isn’t just about education and stressing the importance of a healthy mouth. The key to the success of the campaign is that we have lots fun doing it!

Basingstoke is notorious for the problems of hard water. Limescale in the kettle, showers, toilets, taps is a constant source of irritation requiring endless cleaning and the use of harsh chemicals. Unfortunately we can’t clean the limescale off the heat exchangers in the washing machine, dishwasher and boiler. Limescale increases fuel consumption and shortens the life of these appliances

(We’ve all seen the Calgon ads)

It’s not just limescale, soap scum, sticky surfaces, and tide marks are all hallmarks of hard water. It can also dry skin and aggravate conditions like eczema and psoriasis, A good water softener can eliminate every one of these problems giving you beautiful soft water for showering and bathing, leaving skin soft and hair silky. There is one local, family business who has

dedicated the last thirty years to improving the quality of water in the area. The reviews from customers say everything as they are driven by a passion for customer service and the desire to improve everyone’s quality of water.

All you need to know about Retirement Interest-Only (RIO) mortgages It’s been over a decade since the 2008 financial crash shook the world and wiped £90 billion off the value of the UK’s biggest companies. As a result, borrowing became more difficult for those heading into their later years with many lenders lowering their maximum lending age limit and reducing the provision of interest-only mortgages. However, since the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) recently improved access to mortgage borrowing for those in retirement, the door finally reopened for everyone seeking finance; no matter their age. What is a RIO mortgage? RIO mortgages – short for Retirement Interest-Only – allow borrowers to pay a monthly interest payment with no set end date as it will run until a ‘significant life event’, such as the homeowner moving into long-term care or dying. It is at this point the mortgage is repaid by the sale of the mortgaged property.

Is a RIO mortgage different to that of a standard residential mortgage? A RIO mortgage is very similar to that of a standard residential mortgage, with two key differences: 1. The loan is usually repaid when the borrower either sells the house, moves into long-term care or dies 2. The borrower only has to prove they can afford the monthly interest repayments because the method of repayment the loan is already agreed Essentially, the ‘retirement’ element of the mortgage means there is no defined end date the capital has to be repaid by. Our mortgage appointments can be undertaken in branch, by telephone or by video link. If you would like to talk to a qualified mortgage adviser about RIO mortgages, contact us to book an appointment. Visit our Basingstoke, Hungerford, Newbury and Thatcham branches. Call: 01635 555777 or visit:www.newbury.co.uk.

Who eligible for a Newbury Building Society RIO mortgage? Our RIO mortgage is designed to support borrowers in later life who either want to move or do not want to downsize their current property and wish to remain in their home. We lend to those aged 60 and above who are retired and in receipt of their pension or other ongoing income. Why might a person want to borrower in later life? There are many reasons why older borrowers might want to take out a mortgage: • • • •

However, our evening events have a small charge which covers our immediate costs with proceeds going towards our chosen charity. This year we have partnered with Colostomy UK. We look forward to welcoming you to our events this year, contact us if you have any questions. BuzzConnect Business networking is evolving, and it will continue to grow for years to come. Make sure you join the BuzzConnect Networking Group on Facebook, so you can share your company information for free and be part of a thriving business community.
