Sue Ryder Duchess of Kent Hospice in Reading has launched ‘Walk to Remember’, a new walking event for people to celebrate the lives of loved ones who are gone but not forgotten. Families, friends, colleagues or individuals can complete their walk for someone special any day throughout October or join hundreds of others across the country for the official walk day on Saturday 17th October. Participants are encouraged to personalise their walk by choosing the distance, start and finish line, and a route or location that means something special to them.
www.sueryder.org
They can also share their photos, videos and messages with other walkers on the dedicated Walk to Remember Facebook group. The virtual event is free to enter, but any funds raised through sponsorship and donations will go a long way to help Sue Ryder Duchess of Kent Hospice continue to provide expert and compassionate care to people with life-limiting conditions across Berkshire. For example, fundraising £145 as a team could fund a Sue Ryder Nurse for a day. Laura Kell, Head of Hospice Fundraising at Sue Ryder Duchess of Kent Hospice, said: “With all of our fundraising
events postponed or cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic, we are experiencing a major loss of income. We hope that this special event will provide a way for people to remember loved ones, take in the beautiful Autumn scenery and help us continue to be there for people when it matters.”

West Berkshire Community Support Hub thanks community and volunteer The West Berkshire Community Support Hub would like to thank the 90 community and volunteer groups it has been working closely with to support residents during the coronavirus lockdown. The Community Support Hub has been linking individuals in need to the services available from these groups, who represent nearly 3,000 volunteers across the district. Nearly 9 out of 10 community and volunteer groups were quickly formed as a direct response to the Covid-19 outbreak and lockdown, according to recent survey of the 90 group coordinators collaborating with the Hub. The remainder came from existing community and voluntary services which urgently adapted to meet the coronavirus emergency. According to the survey, the most prevalent services provided by the community and
volunteer groups included collecting prescriptions (97%), shopping (94%), befriending someone who is isolated (66%), delivering food parcels (54%) and providing advice (51%). Other services included dog walking (40%), transport (37%) and emergency repairs (31%).
Collaboration and communication core to volunteers' successes The community and volunteer group co-ordinators revealed in their survey feedback that the keys to their teams' numerous successes came from focusing upon collaboration, both within their teams and with their local providers, and using a variety of communications tools to bring their local community together. These techniques included the use of Zoom, Facebook, WhatsApp, socially distanced meet ups and telephone calls.
West Berkshire Council awards £53,860 in grants for community projects Following a round of bids from Councillors, West Berkshire Council has awarded Community Grants totalling £53,860 to improve public spaces and facilities across the district over the next 12 months. The projects include the renovation of a public garden with improved disabled access, play and gym equipment for schools and recreation grounds, path and lighting improvements for a school and a sports club, improvements for two village halls, the installation of a new bus shelter and a solar powered, vehicle activated speed sign. The grants were allocated from the Members' Community Bid scheme launched by the Council to pinpoint 8
works needed at the local level. Through this bid program District Councillors submit proposals for projects in the areas they represent. The bids must support the priorities published in the 2019-23 Council Strategy, "Building on our Strengths" and be match funded, for example by the relevant Parish or Town Council.

Working with the Community Support Hub In the volunteer group co-ordinator survey, 97% of respondents noted that they felt supported by the Council throughout the lockdown, with all saying that they wished to continue receiving the Hub Bulletin, a news and resource update issued to them by the Community Support Hub each week. Moving forward, several of the co-ordinators and Towns and Parish councillors will be working with the Community Support Hub and the West Berkshire Public Health and Wellbeing department to collaborate on further enhancing ways of reaching the elderly, vulnerable and other marginalised communities across the District. The Community Support Hub was originally set up in partnership with Volunteer Centre West Berkshire and Greenham Trust in March 2020 to connect people in need with groups offering help during the coronavirus lockdown. The Community Support Hub is staying open to ensure that the elderly and most vulnerable people have access to food, medication and other services. The Hub will also continue to support and consult with the wonderful volunteers and community action groups that are helping vulnerable people in their local areas.
People in significant difficulty can contact the West Berkshire Community Support Hub on: 01635 503579 or by email on westberksbct@westberks.gov.uk.

Issues Proposal to extend Public Spaces Protection Order at Speen Lodge Court, Newbury They're seeking the views of local residents, businesses, agencies and visitors to Speen Lodge Court on the proposed condition to extend the PSPO for a further 3 years which will allow them to continue to enforce the current restriction in place to ensure that everyone can feel safe. At this specific location, the proposal is to restrict access to the public right of way over a highway. Cllr Howard Woollaston, West Berkshire's Executive Member for Public Health and Community Wellbeing, said: "It is our duty to ensure that our residents can feel as safe as possible at all times. We have given careful consideration to issues with anti-social behaviour that have arisen at Speen Lodge Court. "We feel that our proposal to restrict a certain right of ways will be a positive step towards addressing these. Therefore, we're asking people who live and work in that area to take part in the consultation on the order to help us to reduce and maintain low crime and anti-social behaviour." The consultation will be live between Monday 10 August and Monday 14 September 2020. The initial findings from the consultation will be taken to the Building Communities Together Partnership for recommendation on the final decision. Big improvements to our local health services ahead of winter Keeping the peace with your neighbours Every day household activity creates noise. However, disputes can occur when people are inconsiderate in the noise they create. It is important to acknowledge the noise your household makes and think about the impact it might have on your neighbours. With this in mind, we have put together some top tips on how you can reduce noise. Get to know your neighbours and their lifestyle, for example, are they retired? Do they have young children? Once you have done this, you should understand the effect noise could have on them. If you suspect you have been noisy, go and speak to your neighbours to see if there have been any problems. Depending on the feedback you get, you may want to avoid the same happening again. If you are approached by a neighbour and asked to keep your noise down react positively. Respect their right to peace and quiet in their home.
Top tips • Don’t slam doors – consider fitting soft-closing mechanisms to doors to minimise noise. • Carpets and heavy curtains help to absorb sound. • Keep musical instrument practices short and at reasonable times. • Consider speaking to your neighbours and agree the times you will be practising. • Make your children aware that their noise can disturb others. • Be aware of the law and that you have responsibilities as well as rights.
Good news for our local health services. First, I’m pleased to report that Hampshire Hospitals will receive an additional £1.5 million for upgrades as part of our winter preparations this year. This is part of £300 million of new capital funding – and will allow our local hospitals to increase A&E capacity, put enhanced infection control measures in place and improve emergency care and urgent treatment services. Next, the process to get a brand new hospital to serve north and mid-Hampshire is progressing at pace. Over the coming weeks, health bosses will invite a wide range of people such as current patients, clinicians and various community groups to help identify and look at how we deliver services in a new building, and where exactly the new hospital should go. Finally in Andover, I can confirm Adelaide Medical Centre will be saved. The surgery will continue providing fantastic NHS services care to its 9,000 patients. People will be able to access the same services at the surgery in the normal way, GPs and staff working there will stay there, and new GPs will join the surgery this year. If you use the centre, you should have recently received a letter informing you of the good news. I promised in my election campaign to prioritise our local health services and I hope this reassures you of our efforts to deliver excellent patient care even in very testing times.

mental and emotio
There is a strong link between our mind and our body and how you feel can be affected by the lifestyle choices you make. Stress is the way you feel when you are under too much pressure and it can cause illness, physical and emotional problems. Trying to identify the underlying causes of the stress and seeing if you can make changes to reduce it.
Research has lead to a simple approach to improve overall wellbeing:
Talking things through with family and friends can help, as can relaxation and physical activity. Don’t be afraid to seek professional help if you feel you need to. You can take steps to make sure our bodies stay fit and healthy, you can also take steps to look after your mental and emotional wellbeing.
Go for a walk, dance, run, step outside, anything that makes you feel good.
Mental and emotional health issues are part of our everyday lives and can affect us as much as problems with our physical health. One in four people have a mental health issue at some time in their life and stress is now cited as one of the biggest causes of sickness.

Following the resounding success of last year’s National Fish and Chip Day and in response to the Government’s recent announcements, we are absolutely delighted to say that our celebration of the nation’s favourite dish will go ahead Friday 4th September 2020!
18
As well as being one of the most popular awareness days of the year, we want National Fish and Chip Day this year to be even more special as we say a very big thank you to this amazing industry who are at the centre of every community, and who have, when able to do so safely, adapted to keep us fed and when that wasn’t possible have kept us all safe by remaining closed at great sacrifice to their business.
All of them have shown great resilience throughout lockdown. So let's make National Fish and Chip Day 2020 the best yet as we bring together everyone involved in creating this iconic British dish; from Fish & Chip shops, pub chains, restaurants, retailers, to the fishermen and farmers who provide the sustainable and natural ingredients needed to create this family favourite.
Cauliflower Brush the whole cauliflower with paprika and olive oil and place under the grill for a noteworthy veggie feast. Once cooked, break into florets, mix with lentils, grilled halloumi and serve on a bed of mixed salad. For extra spice, add some chilli flakes and finally sprinkle grated Parmesan cheese.
Mushrooms The wide scope of mushroom assortments can be classified into two unmistakable sorts: developed and wild. There's bounty to test inside the kitchen – about 15,000 distinct assortments of wild mushroom alone can be found in the UK. In spite of the fact that they develop throughout the entire year, harvest time is the pinnacle of their season.
Seasonal FOOD
As summer transforms into pre-winter, September denotes the start of heartier occasional leafy foods. Cauliflower and swede can be included to servings of mixed greens. Swede This root veg is a turnip-cabbage mixture and has a sweet, hearty flavour. Add swede to generous autumn dishes, such as, swede and grain pie. Swede and grain pie or meal with thyme and hazelnuts as a simple side. For something other than what's expected, nobody will will guess that swede is the swede is the mystery fixing in these fudgy swede and cardamom brownies.
Figs Fragrant figs have a rich jammy taste and a delicate, chewy surface that works in sweet or flavorful plans. Turkish figs are unmistakable in appearance, with a gloomy purpleearthy colored skin, and dynamic red substance inside. Figs don't mature subsequent to picking, so select stout natural products with solid skins. Heat into a fig custard tart for a striking harvest time dessert, or finely cut into a light goat's curd, fig and beetroot plate of mixed greens.
Red grapes Sweet red grapes are developed in ripe districts over the Mediterranean and it can be utilized for something beyond lunchbox snacks. Have a go at stringing the grapes onto sticks and afterward plunging in softened dim chocolate for a simple sweet. Delicious grapes supplement pungent flavours – they are an extraordinary counterpart for smooth Brie on flat breads or use to flatbreads or use to stud a fragrant red grape and rosemary focaccia. 13

Does Green Tea Help Prevent Prostate Cancer?
is delighted to welcome Dr. Michael Greger, a physician, author and al speaker on public health issues to share his blogs in every issue. A leading cause of illness and death among men in the United States and Western Europe is prostate cancer, but rates in Asia can be as much as ten times lower.
Dozens of studies have examined whether tea drinkers tend to get less cancer in the future and if cancer victims tend to have drank less tea in the past.
Perhaps Asians are genetically less likely to get prostate cancer? No. Japanese Americans and Chinese Americans have high prostate cancer rates as well.
Although the results have been mixed, overall, tea consumption was associated with a lower risk of prostate cancer.
In the United States, up to nearly one in three men in their 30s already has small prostate cancers brewing and that grows to nearly two thirds of American men by their 60s. On autopsy, most older men were found to have unknown cancerous tumors in their prostates. Remarkably, Asian men seem to have the same prevalence of these hidden, latent prostate cancers on autopsy, but they don’t tend to grow enough to cause problems. In Japan, men tend to die with their tumors rather than from their tumors.
However, just because tea drinkers get less cancer doesn’t mean it’s necessarily because of the tea. In vitro studies performed in a lab allow for as many factors to be controlled as possible. When everything is removed from the equation except for green tea and prostate cancer, dripping green tea compounds directly on prostate cancer cells in a petri dish can cause them to self-destruct. But we not appear to absorb enough green tea compounds into our bloodstream to reach those kinds of levels.
His latest books: How Not to Die, the How Not to Die Cookbook, and How Not to Diet all became instant New York Times Best Sellers. 100% of all proceeds he has ever received from his books, DVDs and speaking engagements have always and will always be donated to charity.
In the United States, for example, the “high” tea-drinking group may be defined as more than five cups of tea a week. In Japan, however, the “high” tea-drinking group can consume five or more cups a day, which was associated with about halving the risk of aggressive prostate cancer. It was not by preventing the formation of the cancer in the first place, but perhaps by slowing or stopping the cancer’s growth.

Italy is renowned for producing many high-quality products from exquisite designer fashions to many other items, including cars and other vehicles. Fabulous holiday and vacation destinations, plus history, culture, lifestyle and a lot of other factors bring countless visitors back to Italy constantly, all year round.
There are a good number of large production companies that produce splendid, impressive wines. There are family-owned and operated wine producers. Rhea Passito (IGT) Umbria Is a concentrated and fabulous sweet dessert wine, which is produced
in limited quantities. These wines are just a selection from their very impressive range. Since 2004, their olive trees have been producing splendid olives for high-quality extra virgin olive oil.

Algae Additions Lockdown has been a taxing time, but one of the positives that has come out of it, is the increase in home baking with many of us dusting off our aprons and heading back into the kitchen. Cake and pudding making is booming in popularity, and it’s not just classic Victoria Sponge or chocolate cake coming out of ovens. If you’ve already tried adding chilli, courgette or chia seeds to your cake mix and are wondering ‘what’s next?’, then you might be intrigued by an ingredient called chlorella… For those not in the know, chlorella is a type of green algae, which can be harvested and turned into a powder. It has become renowned for having a host of health benefits, with studies showing it could help with everything from boosting energy levels to keeping wrinkles at bay. Whilst adding algae to your food might sound a little odd, it’s a popular ingredient in Japan, commonly used in puddings where a splash of colour and extra nutrition is added.

LET'S MAKE BRITAIN KIND AGAIN!
#KIND20 is a global movement for social empathy and worldwide kindness. We use all social media and invite people to share photos and videos of their acts of kindness and/or express gratitude towards any kindness done to them. Furthermore, we recognise and showcase these stories and music to inspire to MAKE BRITAIN KIND AGAIN!
This revitalising movement has so far reached over 2.5 million people. Kindness seems to be the new currency in our new KINDemic world. Our #KIND20 campaign has metamorphosed from the global foundation, tuff.earth who championed social integration and community cohesion locally and globally for the last 10 years. This campaign started only 12 weeks ago from the back streets of London, it has now reached the coastlines of Australia , the valleys of Kashmir, the Shantytowns of Uganda, the geysers of Iceland right across the Atlantic to the Rockies in the USA. #KIND20 plans to ensure by the year-end there will be more cases of kindness than cases of COVID19. Many Unsung Heroes globally are being honoured as KIND20 Champions for their selfless services. Now we would love your support to spread the message
of Being Kind to your family, friends, even strangers, particularly in your local community and the nation by abiding by all the guidelines in place designed to protect all our citizens of the UK. Let's support our neighbors in their time of need and spread the message of positivity and kindness. We would love you all to enthuse people of all cultures in and around Britain to find their local champions in their towns and cities, so together we can MAKE BRITAIN KIND AGAIN and let's turn the year of 2020 into #KIND20. Post Sun
Skin care!
TLC for your body’s largest organ after a day of soaking up the sun’s rays. You’ve enjoyed the weather and you’ve slathered on your SPF? Yes? You’ve either achieved a luminous tan or a sore case of sun burn. Even if you think you’ve achieved a ‘healthy looking tan’ there is no such thing as a ‘healthy’ tan. Harmful UVA and UVB rays will have a long-term impact on your skin. Think… dehydration, dark spots, fine lines, wrinkles and in extreme cases skin cancer. You need to repair and nourish your skin to return it to, and keep it in a healthy and happy state.
Cleanse – the combination of sweat
and sunscreen can leave your skin feeling sticky and clogged. Take a shower, warm enough to open the pores but not boiling! Use a mild, nonabrasive cleanser on face and body to wash away residue sunscreen, sweat, excess oil and unclog those pores.
Moisturise, moisturise, moisturise Your skin will need re-hydrating and moisture added back in. Apply moisturisers to the body whilst skin is slightly damp to seal in the moisture. Use a hydrating toner spritz on face and then apply a hydrating moisturiser whilst skin is still damp with toner. Beneficial ingredients to look out for in your post-sun skincare:
• Aloe Vera (unscented) – cooling and highly anti-inflammatory – ideal for sunburn. • Ceramides – lipids that help form the skin’s barrier, helping skin retain moisture and protect against environmental aggressors. • Jojoba Oil – nourishing • Vitamin E – repairing • Oats/Oatmeal – hydrating, calming and helps to reduce inflammation. Treat your sun kissed face and recharge your skin with a soothing, cooling
and hydrating mask. This will help to alleviate that tight feeling your face often gets after a day in the sun as well as cool and soothe sunburn.
Whilst sunbathing, please stay clear of bathing days steer clear of products containing AHAs and BHAs such as glycolic, lactic or salicylic acids which can make your skin more susceptible to sun damage. • Retinol and retinol derivatives – encourage cell turnover exposing delicate new skin which is then susceptible to sun damage. • Essential oils like bergamot and citrus types – can make your skin sun sensitive. Top up your SPF if your skin care products contain any of the above. Keep your skin protected in the sun whilst always wearing an SPF of ideally 50 but at least 30! 27

free can still remain on-trend. Although animal testing was made illegal for cosmetic purposes it still happens abroad.
Something that most people don’t know is that the majority of cosmetic packaging cannot be recycled!
Often brands will hide the details deep within their website so, make sure you do your research.
While we can find a use for the empty glass foundation bottles, most beauty packaging can be more complex often resulting in being thrown away.
Step 3:
By searching for brands that use plastic-free and refillable packaging, you are making a conscious effort to save the planet! Lush has an amazing range of ‘Naked’ products that are definitely worth checking out. The ‘Slap Stick Foundation’ (£17) offers a dewy medium coverage perfect for everyday use and guess what? It’s both vegan and zero-waste!
Step 2: Follow the Rabbit Look for products with ‘The Leaping Bunny’ logo. This means that both the final product that you are purchasing, and the components are not tested on animals. Glossier’s ‘Lash Slick’ (£14) is the perfect example that shopping cruelty-
Read the Labels I know this sounds silly; however, it is one of the most important factors to consider when trying to shop in an eco-friendly way. Sustainability is not just about packaging and waste, but it is also about taking care of what you’re putting onto your body. Yes, organic and natural products are beneficial to your skin and should always be considered over harsh chemicals but, you also have to think about the environment. When you wash away product, it returns to the earth through the drains, this has a negative impact on your environmental footprint. There is a common misconception that shopping eco-friendly means the sacrifice of quality when it is in fact the opposite, especially when purchasing from small businesses.
Step 4:
Swap your Everyday Essentials Little changes make a huge difference! Re-usable cotton pads and muslin cloths are an easy alternative to daily disposables. These substitutes are softer on the skin and can simply be placed in your weekly wash to clean, ready to use again. We LOVE the TALA ‘Leaf Face Cloth’ for just £5 you can ditch the make-up wipes and easily remove make-up with just water!
Step 3: Waste Less Ultimately, the aim here is to reduce the amount of cosmetic waste that impacts the earth. On average the beauty industry produces 120 billion units of waste globally [Zero Waste Week, Forbes] and this needs to change. The time for change is now and it’s in your hands.

Is our obsession with face masks analogous of our desperation for time?
For the last year or so, at-home face masks and facial treatments have become the pinnacle of indulgence and relaxation! From sheet to clay, DIY to high street bought, or peel off to hydrating, the tranquillising effect of face masks is unrivalled by other at-home treatments. Even amidst the disillusioned feeling of unlimited time inherent to lockdown, we remain scurrying around in search of time, ease and slowness. Our ties to our jobs, devices and various daily commitments has normalised the sense of ‘rushing’. Even if we are seated, we are still focused on something other than ourselves. One of the few things that commands our complete undivided attention, demanding entire relaxation and stillness is a face mask. During lockdown, the sales of sheet face masks
flourished to a point hitherto reached. Data generated by retail analysts WGSN, demonstrated that sheet face masks sold out at an increased rate of 26% in Britain on 21st April 2020, with the rate peaking at 39%. The most recent months of isolation, stress and chaos have led many to seek solace and peace in at-home treatments and self-care habits, particularly face masks. This is interesting for two reasons. One - of all at-home self-care treatments, face masks resemble the experience of a spa most closely. Amidst the uncertainty and unknown of the pandemic, we
sought relaxation and luxury that is not mundane and typical to the home. Two, face masks commanded the stillness inhibited by the shifting nature of lockdown. The inextricable nature of emotional needs and physical treatments exposed by the changing retail trends of lockdown reveal a great deal about human nature. Do we rely on physical changes to appease emotional needs, and does the connotations of face masks prove this relationship?

Neurodiversity expert launches new podcast series for parents and families
Doctor of Child and Adolescent Psychotherapist and CEO of Liverpool-based ADHD Foundation, Dr Tony Lloyd, has launched a new podcast series on neurodiversity for parents and families.
Lloyd is one of the region’s and nation’s biggest campaigners to raise awareness of ADHD. He is CEO of national charity ADHD Foundation, the largest ‘user-led’ ADHD agency in Europe. He sits on the panel of experts who will take part in the new podcast, called ‘Neurodiversity Matters’, which aims to tackle everyday challenges those with the condition face. Launching as a four-part series, he talks to real families about their personal experiences living with ADHD and other neurodevelopmental conditions including Asperger’s and Autism. Tony said: “One in five people in the UK are considered neurodiverse and one in 20 are diagnosed with ADHD with numbers continuing to rise, “Therefore, the work we do is more important than ever. Podcasts are hugely popular because they are an easier way of digesting a lot of information quickly, so they are ideal for parents.
Those with conditions or raising children with conditions may not have time to sit and read support books or trawl the internet whilst the podcasts are short episodes you can listen to on the move or at a time that is convenient, without even having to stop what you’re doing at home. “The episodes are available via both Spotify and Apple, and I urge anyone who wants to know more about living with ADHD, whether it is yourself, a family member, or a friend, to give us a listen for first hand advice.” Each 30-minute episode explores common challenges and a mix of relatable personal stories and professional guidance. Alongside Dr Lloyd, it features Jannine, an ADHD mum of three neurodiverse children and head of ADHD Wise UK and ex-England Rugby nutritionist Roz Kadir. It is also supported by leading brain health, omega supplement brand, Equazen. Jannine and Tony are both
advocates of helping manage ADHD symptoms through adding fish oils and fatty acids to diets. Jannie said: “Whether it’s signs to look out for, guidance on self-help or recommendations to help you manage the condition, the podcast series is an authentic and relatable open chat.” Dr Tony Lloyd added: “It’s important parents and individuals feel they have a strong network of support as there are many mistaken assumptions around ADHD. Many children leave secondary education at 16 never having had their learning differences identified. This leads us to make assumptions about lack of progress and lack of confidence in their abilities. These are subjects we aim to tackle in the podcast series.” The podcast series is available now via Spotify and Apple and can be found by searching ‘Neurodiversity Matters’.

Establishments such as businesses, transport systems, restaurants, schools and community organizations are developing plans to resume normal or phased operations during the COVID-19 pandemic thus avoiding another closure of their business. These plans include an initial assessment to identify people who may be infectious to limit the spread of COVID-19 infections as they enter their establishment.
Business owners... You have the opportunity to safeguard your people and customers.

Covid 19 - Antibody test Antibody tests look for evidence of the immune response to covid-19. The aim to answer the question: have I been exposed to COVID-19 and produced an immune response? If you want to see if you are carrying covid-19 now, you need to use an PCR Test. If a person is exposed to covid-19, their immune system will react in order to start clearing the virus. This involves producing antibodies to help clear the virus and evidence suggests most patients who recover from covid-19 produce them. There are different types of antibodies: IgG is the most common and it is the IgG to covid-19 that is detected by this test.

We offer the abbott test, which is highly accurate and approved by public health england.

Covid 19 - PCR test The antigen test can be performed at home by the client. Antigen tests detect viral RNA. This requires taking a swab from the nose and throat and then analysing the specimen in the lab using the polymerase chain reaction (PCR). You may see these tests referred to as PCR tests. They aim to answer: do I carry coronavirus now? If you want to see if you have had covid-19 and developed antibodies, you should take an antibody test. The chances of detecting virus are highest in the days surrounding the start of symptoms. Ideally samples should be taken from symptomatic individuals between days 1-5 from symptom onset. However, there are many cases when virus can be detected later into the illness.
Minimise
your risk
of infection and protect your business A negative test result is also useful, to tell you that there is no presence of virus on that swab. But please bear in mind that this may be a false negative and isolation guidelines should still be followed. Many institutions use two swabs, 24 hours apart to confirm a negative case alongside other clinical information.

Gardening The Future of
Eco-friendly Ideas
The love of gardening encompasses both art and science; the art of harmoniously arranging plants in glorious patchworks of colour – and the science behind successfully cultivating plant life and botanicals. For some 4,000 years, since humankind harnessed the tools and knowhow to cultivate land in ancient Egypt, gardening has evolved and morphed to move with the changing times, climates and countries in which it’s practised. These days, there’s a real emphasis on eco-friendly gardens and a focus on protecting the future of our nowfragile planet; so how can you do your bit? Below, we’ve provided five great eco-friendly gardening tips for all you green-fingered, planet-conscious people to explore.
Companies such as The Grass People provide wildflowers specifically for pollination, as well as plants that will thrive in heavier soils or shaded areas, so it’s never been easier to transform your garden into a hive of activity that’ll help wildlife and look amazing.
Stretch your imagination a little farther, and you can transform the likes of old tyres and bathtubs into planters and flowerbeds – the options are endless!
Native Wildflowers If you’re wanting to get to grips with ecologically friendly gardening practices, arguably the best place to start is with wildflowers. An inexpensive-yet-effective addition to your garden, wildflowers are generally easy to grow and maintain, and what’s more, they’ll attract a huge amount of wildlife to your colour-filled flower beds too, most notably - bees! Bees are hugely important to the entire planet’s ecosystem, but unfortunately, their numbers are declining due to a loss of habitat and having to travel further and further to find pollinating flowers.

Eco-friendly Materials
A huge part of eco-friendly gardening and having a positive impact on the environment is learning to recycle and reuse materials effectively.
If you’re serious about creating an environmentally friendly garden, then incorporating eco-friendly materials into your design is a must.
You’ll be surprised just how many old odds and ends can be used in the garden, rather than being discarded and thrown away as “rubbish”. Items such as empty paint pots don’t take much imagination to be turned into

It’s worth remembering that your entire garden doesn’t have to look like an overgrown jungle to entice insects and animals; create a secluded corner and wildlife will flock to this little outdoor oasis and thrive. The likes of bug hotels, hedgehog houses and compost bin or heaps all help to provide a habitat for local wildlife. Something as simple as an old log is the perfect home for an abundance of insect life, while our friends at Kedel can take care of your compost bin needs with their brilliant range of products.

Secrets to Better Communication with
Teenag
Talking with teens can be difficult. They’re developing their own opinions, habits and beliefs, but are still children in so many ways. It might feel like all you ever do is nag or argue with them. Building positive conversation takes time and effort. It’s a marathon, not a sprint. Changing how you approach communication can have an enormous impact on the entire family.
2.
Here’s ten simple ideas to help you improve conversations with your teenager.
1.
40
Talk when it doesn’t matter If your teen knows talking really means a lecture, they won’t want to speak with you. Chat about fun things, their hobbies, and interests whenever you can. That means when you need to get serious, they’re more likely to listen.
3.
Get the tone right Teenagers are quick to stop listening when talking becomes nagging. You end up constantly telling them off about the same things, but it has no impact. When there’s a problem, keep your tone friendly and polite. Be honest and avoid using sarcasm.
Treat them as equals Your child isn’t an adult yet, but they soon will be. Value their opinions and beliefs as equal to your own. Allow them to share their ideas and negotiate agreements. Be prepared to say sorry when you’re in the wrong.
4. 5.
Pick your battles It’s easy to heap problems on top of problems when talking to a teen. Be specific about one issue that needs addressing and stick to it. Don’t pick them up for every minor annoyance. Just focus on the big worries.
Praise them Teenagers are never too old to be praised and feel appreciated. You can tell them how proud you are or show them through your actions. You know your teen best. Think about how you can compliment them in ways they’d appreciate.
Helly Douglas - Writer Helly is a teacher and content writer, specialising in education and parenting.
h your
ger 6. 7.
Actively listen If you want your teenager to talk, you really need to listen. That means stopping what you’re doing and showing through your body language that you’re focused on them. If it’s a bad time, explain why and arrange a better one. Just don’t forget to get back to them.
Label feelings Your teen will find it easy to express themselves if they can name common emotions. When they talk to you, label what they’re feeling. “Tom, you’re feeling anxious about the test, but you’ve worked hard, and you’ll do great.”
8. 9.
Find the right time Finding a good time to talk doesn’t mean just clearing your schedule. Your teenager will have plans too. They won’t want to talk if they feel you’re interrupting them. Avoid having serious conversations when either of you feels tired or irritated.
Unpick arguments If you find yourself always arguing, look for patterns that might explain it. Are there particular times of day or familiar issues that keep cropping up? Look at your own feelings. Are you tense with work pressures or worried about something? Chances are it could contribute to the problem.
10.
Build positive relationships with other adults If your teenager can talk with trusted adults, it reinforces the message that grown-ups care about them. They’ll see that talking with adults helps them feel good about themselves. That makes them more likely to open up to you too.

Designer B
Revealed: The UK's Favourite
There are many designer fashion brands that are well-loved all around the UK, but which brand does each UK region prefer?
Steve Cochrane MBE - Psyche
42 40
3.
Brands by Region
Exploring the sales data from designer brand retailer Psyche, we’ve discovered the most popular brands per region throughout the UK.
1. South East - Levi’s Red Tab & Ted Baker
Here in the South East of England, Reading, Oxford, Milton Keynes and Chichester all favour Levi’s Red Tab and Ted Baker, specifically Ted Baker accessories. Southampton and Canterbury follow their own rules, favouring Barbour International while Guildford opt for EA7. Both quite different in comparison, Levi’s Red Tab and Ted Baker clearly cater for two separate purposes and occasions, potentially showing our true diversity in the region and love for both casual and formalwear.
South West - Emporio Armani 2. Emporio Armani stands out as a consistent favourite amongst our South West neighbouring cities, including in Truro and Bristol. Exeter on the other hand enjoys Levi’s Red Tab over Emporio Armani, while Dorchester favours Hugo underwear.
London - BOSS While each part of London favours different brands, BOSS by Hugo Boss is the overall favourite. From central London preferring BOSS Underwear to east London preferring BOSS Athleisure, BOSS is a popular brand across the Greater London area. One outlier includes West London, who favour Lulu Guinness to any other brand. Taking a look at other parts of the country, it’s clear to see there are common favourites across the UK.
4.
Eastern England - Barbour East Midlands - Ted Baker West Midlands - BOSS Wales - Polo Ralph Lauren North West - BOSS Yorkshire - Barbour North East - BOSS Scotland - BOSS Northern Ireland - Xti Almost half the regions across the UK favour BOSS to any other brand when it comes to shopping for designer brands online with Psyche. Part of the wider Hugo Boss range, BOSS has many different collections including BOSS Athleisure, BOSS Bodywear and BOSS Business to name a few. Whether it’s because of the diversity of the brand or the fact that it’s currently the most on-trend clothing to wear, BOSS seemingly caters efficiently to a strong percentage of the UK population. As one of the biggest designer brands in the world, Hugo Boss totalled €2.9billion sales in 2019 alone. It’s also important to take into account the overall wide range of taste in the UK when it comes to designer fashion. South east England alone shows how two almost opposite brands can be as equally as popular in one area, while it’s obvious that location has some sort of effect on the brands we choose to wear.

Unsurprisingly The Shed is a (large) garden shed in Brentwood, Essex that has been converted into a recording studio and multimedia space. It boasts professional grade equipment to allow the recording and production of audio visual material.
music is not right for the channel.
As you might expect this happens via a live performance of original material where a band/artist get to strut their stuff in front of the camera and have it professionally recorded for YouTube.
From there it’s a matter of being selected based upon your diversity and talent which was mentioned earlier in the article. Once selected you’ll need to make the journey to Brentwood, Essex for your day in the studio.
Ralph Mullan, the founder of the Shed Session, owner of The Shed Studio and self-confessed music addict, has played and worked with unsigned bands for many years. He has wanted to turn a dream of owning a studio and his desire to help gigging unsigned talent to climb the super tough music ladder into a reality for many years. Ralph recognised the insatiable appetite of today’s social media platforms for content and saw The Shed Session going some way towards satisfying this must have for any aspiring talent. The Shed Session welcomes and encourages diversity and wants to showcase people from all walks of life, all ages and all styles. There is absolutely no reason for anyone to think that their
To get involved you’ll need to contact Ralph at The Shed via one of the platforms listed at the bottom of this article provide an appropriate link to your material and social media sites.
If selected it is worth noting that The Shed Session is free, YES FREE!! If you are not a performer or maybe you are not selected there is still some great music to be enjoyed on the channel so why not like and subscribe to the fortnightly releases?

enjoy! Let’s be honest, we’ve all been there. You’ve had a tough day, you decide it’s time to relax, put the telly on and your feet up and watch something new. So here you are, sat on your sofa; remote in hand, scrolling through the guide tirelessly only to find that there’s absolutely nothing that everyone can agree on. Well, that’s where we come in. We’re here to make that decision a whole lot easier for you so grab your popcorn and get in your comfiest clothes because here are our top picks for this month. A small disclaimer, these are all picks from Netflix this month. With lockdown casting a big shadow over the UK the film industry isn’t exactly booming so we’ve been watching a lot of Netflix alright!
1.
Money Heist
Written & Directed by Alex Pina Let’s get it out the way, from what we can tell there has been a lot of people who have tried this one already but were deterred by the fact it’s a Spanish series which has been dubbed in English to suit the English audience on Netflix. So yes, there is a slight; yet noticeable, difference with the lip-sync to the voices. But, and it’s a big but, we cannot recommend this one enough. Once you learn the voices you stop noticing it. Set-in modern-day Spain this heist crime drama series follows eight uniquely talented criminals and their master puppeteer ‘The Professor’ as he leads them through one of the biggest robberies the world has ever
2.
seen. The Royal Mint of Spain. The story has two sides, one following the robbers in the Mint and one following The Professor on the outside both as gripping as each other fusing together as one story. Both are filled with huge; story changing, decisions, and extremely near misses. If you don’t bite your nails already be prepared to do so during this one. The Professor’s seemingly infinite knowledge of the behavior and regimes of the Spanish police allows him to be one step ahead at all times. This mixed with eight very different, strong-minded robbers makes for a fantastic watch. Money heist has 4 equally exciting series on Netflix with a fifth and final one coming in 2021. What makes it different is that there is not just one spin at the end of each episode, each one is filled with tense sequences which will have your eyes glued to the screen. Look, trust us here It’s fun, it’s exciting, watch it!
The Umbrella Academy Multiple Directors
I want to start by enlightening you all with a fact that not many people may know about. The
3.
Umbrella Academy. It was actually co-written by lead vocalist of My Chemical Romance Gerard Way. So, there we are one to tell the grandkids I suppose. Now on with the review. The Umbrella Academy is set in modern-day America. The story follows 7 children born at the exact same time from around the world. All brought by a billionaire who spends his time training them on how to use their powers. But after his mysterious death; and don’t worry this isn’t a spoiler it's basically what the whole first series is about; the group are brought back together years later when they’re grown up to solve the mystery of his death. But it’s not so straight forward, obviously, there is also the small task of saving the world to worry about. The story takes you deeper into each character as you learn their personalities and understand their powers. Having such a diverse range of characters all bouncing off of each other provides us with some Whitty moments and for such a morbid subject The Umbrella Academy manages to make it fun and addictive. It’s one of those that it doesn’t matter what age you are you’re going to enjoy it basically it's one for all the family.
Keeping our eyes peeled – Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory Directed by Mel Stuart
Every month we give our top pick from next month’s releases and being a Netflix orientated month, we thought we’d go for a film. And this time we're throwing it back because as of September the original Willy Wonka and the chocolate factory will be gracing our living rooms tellies once again. And don’t worry if you preferred the new Tim Burton remake because that’ll be on there too. Both versions will be available on Netflix for you to watch and we’re so ready. digital platform intends to revolutionise the way communities support their local state schools, bringing much needed support to teachers.
When the precocious son of the founders of LetsLocalise started at a reputable state school in Berkshire, he was shocked and more than a little disappointed by what he found. Despite the limitless energy and creativity of the teaching staff, he found the school to be in a shabby condition, its equipment often aged or broken and the opportunities to engage pupils in external trips and activities that might broaden their horizons to be limited at best and non-existent at worst. The conversations at home triggered by these observations led to an idea with the potential not just to transform the prospects of state schools; it also offered an opportunity to strengthen local communities, by bringing multiple people, organisations and businesses into close relationships with their local schools. The lightbulb moment for Gaurav and Divya Garg, based in Wokingham in Berkshire, came when surveys prompted by their son’s observations showed that in excess of 60% of people in a given community wanted actively to help their local schools. They just had no idea how to do so. What if this reservoir of goodwill could be tapped into and piped into local schools?
48
Given the background of the Gargs and friends and colleagues in innovation, technology and community activities, the solution emerged in the shape of a digital platform, LetsLocalise, that could highlight the demand in schools and connect it to ‘supply’ out in the community. A critical perception in the framing of the idea came in the realisation that support for schools needed to come in a variety of formats. Yes, financial support would be important but so too would be volunteer time, expertise, work experience – in fact, anything that would help pupils get a clearer window to the world beyond the core curriculum. The idea behind the concept is that state schools register on the platform and headteachers and their teaching teams identify the programmes and activities that they would most like to pursue but currently cannot, due to insufficient financial or human resource. A typical selection for a single school might be a campaign to raise funds for
basketball hoops, a request for help with painting and decorating, an appeal for volunteers to act as exam supervisors, an appeal to experts to talk about their chosen profession and a request for internships or work experience opportunities for pupils. Once a school has posted the details of these programmes on the site, individuals in the local community, local organisations and local businesses are approached and asked to register on the platform too. Those registering can then browse through the range of requests across a range of schools and choose how best they can help. Continue on page 50.

A critical stage in the development of these school-community connections is in finding ways of reaching beyond pupils’ parents and bringing in support and resources that would not normally find their way into schools. Reaching the very people without school-age children, who said they wanted actively to help but did not know how. LetsLocalise has managed to break down ways of supporting schools into neat categories, which can be easily navigated on the website. So, for example, there is Pledge a Penny, Pledge a Minute, Pledge a Resource, Working with Schools, Expert Time and Corporate Connect. No headteacher or teacher will ever have had access to a platform with the scope and range of LetsLocalise in their professional lives. It is a multi-sided platform that enables multiple participants to engage at the same time.
So, instead of Websites through which schools can simply share information with their pupils’ parents, LetsLocalise can bring individuals, organisations and businesses onto the platform simultaneously, creating multiple connections and offering scope for engagement between schools and would-be supporters in a wide range of relationships. The LetsLocalise story moved from the drawing board to the real world in November 2019, when the founders and the team of colleagues and supporters they had built up, launched a pilot across seven schools in Berkshire. In fact, the company had to cap the number of schools it first engaged with because virtually every headteacher to whom the idea was outlined wanted to participate. “Like all brilliant ideas, the LetsLocalise concept is rooted in simplicity. Headteachers can see that tapping into that reservoir of goodwill that we are convinced exists out there in every community is a ‘no brainer’. Why would a school not want to tap into the support networks that can be constructed from their local communities?” says co-founder, Gaurav Garg.
LetsLocalise is a service offered free of charge to all state schools.
Testimonials: Shirley Austin Headteacher at The Forest School, Winnersh, Berkshire "I would say it’s a great opportunity to link in with your community, to work with great people. It’s a unique opportunity because not many people step forward and give up their time like this company does, so I would say grab hold of the opportunity, publicise it lots, be patient and stick with it, and work hard with the team around you because they’re there to help you.”
Simon Cope Headteacher at Wildridings Primary School Bracknell, Berkshire “I think LetsLocalise is just such a fantastic project. It does take time to get it up and running – but once it is up and running, keep pushing. At the end of the day, the only people that are going to benefit are the children of the school so it’s definitely a worthwhile project. I would recommend it to anybody that’s looking to get involved with them. “For me, it’s a no-brainer to get involved with LetsLocalise and we’re very excited about the future.”

Make a difference to the environment in your local area by joining our national campaign, 11-27 September 2020.
We waste so much. Every day millions of things that could be reused or recycled end up being thrown away. Keep Britain Tidy inspires people to end waste for now and for future generations. This is about taking huge collective strides made up of small, individual steps: recycling those plastic bottles rather than throwing them in a litter bin and reducing food waste by only buying what you need. Waste is everyone’s problem and everyone has a role to play in the solution. The little things we can all do will, together, make a big difference. Litter blights our streets, parks and beaches and costs us millions of pounds to clear up every year. Keep Britain Tidy is here to inspire people to eliminate litter now and for future generations. This is about more than simply getting people to pick up litter. We aim to
52
change behaviour permanently by spotlighting the problem daily and offering creative solutions. We work with people, businesses, local authorities and government to educate, innovate and inspire - improving the environment on everyone’s doorstep. Keep Britain Tidy fights for people’s right to live and work in places they can be proud of and prosper in. But we also celebrate the great parks and beaches that we all benefit from through our awards programmes. Our Green Flag Awards improve the quality of parks, our Blue Flag and Seaside Awards recognise the country’s best beaches and the Keep Britain Tidy Award rewards the cleanest places in our towns and cities. With the support of our partners, our Care projects work with volunteers who are improving the environment on their doorstep. From street to sea, we are
improving places close to you every day. Today’s young people are the key to eliminating litter and ending waste for now and for future generations and that is why Keep Britain Tidy runs the world’s biggest schools’ environmental education programme, Eco-Schools. More than 2.3 million children and young people are currently actively engaged in the Eco-Schools programme. Our ambition is that every child has the chance to learn about the environment and the role they can play in improving it. If we are to make the huge collective strides to change behaviour and create a cleaner country for everyone, then investing in our future means inspiring the next generation today. What will offices look like
post-lockdown? This month office workers are being encouraged to return to their workplaces after months of working from home, but what will the new office environment look like post-lockdown? Employers and employees themselves, will have a duty of care to help make the workplace as safe as possible using a number of practical steps and additions for peace of mind. Office Furniture Online
Social distancing still applies As the government advises the public to social distance where possible to prevent the spread of Coronavirus, office workers will be faced with similar rules in the workplace. So how can we safely socially distance in an office? Taking into consideration the size of your office and the amount of employees, teams should utilise space the best they can to create distance between themselves. If this isn’t suitable, then employers should
54
invest in acrylic transparent desk partitions in front and at the side of each desk to reduce the risk of germs spreading. Alternatively, organisations could divide teams into those who take turns coming into the office and those working from home in order to lower the amount of people in the office.
Limited access to communal areas If your office has a breakroom area or communal kitchen area, employers may decide to limit or close off these areas. Any space that people may gather, even inadvertently, can be a bad idea when we return to offices after lockdown. Take a big thermos flask of tea, your own cutlery and a water bottle with you to work so that you don’t have to use communal kitchens and shared items.
Effective signage and hand sanitising stations It can be so easy to go back to the office after lockdown and slip into old ways with our colleagues, but it’s still so important to be mindful of hygiene measures. Employer duty of care should also include the provision of multiple hand sanitising stations and anti-bacterial cleaning supplies for desks. Putting up effective related health and safety signs around the office and hand sanitiser at entry points will serve as reminders to employees to sanitise their hands throughout their working day. Law Firm Lead the Way with Domestic Abuse Awareness Champion Status
Basingstoke’s leading law firm, Lamb Brooks recently took part in a useful and thought-provoking training session held by Hampshire charity, The YOU Trust. The Dragonfly Project (associated with The YOU Trust) seeks to identify victims of domestic violence and abuse and support those who are isolated within their own communities. The project is looking to develop further in Hampshire, after being established in Dorset for some time, so that they can offer their valuable services to those in need across the region. Lamb Brooks are the first law firm in North Hampshire to complete the training and are delighted to be involved in the project so as a Family Law specialist they can raise awareness of such an important issue and also be aware of how to spot the warning signs when their own clients could be in need of help. Commenting on the Champion Status, Rob Parker, Partner and Head of the Family Law Team commented: “Myself and the family team are pleased to be involved in such a crucial project that is developing in our region. Having seen in the media the growing concerns about domestic violence, particularly over the lockdown period, our department were keen to learn more about the issue and see where we, as an established specialist in Family Law, 56
can assist men, women and children who experience this abuse”. Calls to the National Domestic Abuse Helpline were up 80% in June according to the charity Refuge. 1 in 4 women and 1 in 6 men are affected by domestic abuse in their lifetimes, with 2 women a week sadly being killed by their perpetrators and a further 3 women a week taking their own lives. From taking part in the course, the Family Law Team learned many more shocking statistics about domestic abuse which includes controlling, coercive and threatening behaviour as well as stalking and physical violence. They also spent time looking at the laws that have been introduced over the years and the warning indicators that someone in an abusive relationship may show. The Family Law Team are wellversed in dealing with sensitive and often upsetting family situations, however the course was truly grounding and eye-opening when it comes to hearing about the daily struggles that victims of domestic abuse suffer, and with the right support, aim to manage or escape from.
Lesley Morton, Course Facilitator and ICEP DVA Worker at The YOU Trust commented: “We are really pleased to work with progressive law firms such as Lamb Brooks. It is great to have some new Champions on board with the Dragonfly Project and hold training courses with businesses who are so dedicated and keen to give back to their local communities.” If you are willing to see how you can help support the project or are looking for advice about Family Law or Domestic Violence Support for you / on behalf of someone you know please find some useful telephone numbers and website below.
