Following the resounding success of last year’s National Fish and Chip Day. In response to the Government’s recent announcements, we are absolutely delighted to say that our celebration of the nation’s favourite dish will go ahead Friday 4th September 2020!

As well as being one of the most popular awareness days of the year, we want National Fish and Chip Day this year to be even more special as we say a very big thank you to this amazing industry who are at the centre of every community, and who have, when able to do so safely, adapted to keep us fed and when that wasn’t possible have kept us all safe by remaining closed at great sacrifice to their business.

All of them have shown great resilience throughout lockdown. So let's make National Fish and Chip Day 2020 the best yet as we bring together everyone involved in creating this iconic British dish; from Fish & Chip shops, pub chains, restaurants, retailers, to the fishermen and farmers who provide the sustainable and natural ingredients needed to create this family favourite.

Council’s plan to meet housing need at every stage of life A plan that sets out an ambitious blueprint for residents to find a home which meets their needs while continuing to build on partnership successes to support the borough’s most vulnerable residents and eradicate rough sleeping by 2024, has been approved. The strategy aims to create opportunities at every stage of life for all residents across Basingstoke and Deane, focusing on increasing housing choices available to the borough’s residents who have housing needs. It focusses on five priorities: preventing homelessness, eradicating rough sleeping by 2024, delivering housing choice and quality, tackling climate change and place

Residents Survey - the results are in West Berkshire Council undertook a survey of residents in late May to understand how communities are feeling about the impact of Covid-19 on their health, finances, on the environment and on the wider community. Almost 3,300 residents from across the district responded and the council has already used the preliminary data collected to inform its Recovery Strategy, which is being considered Questions ranged from the health and wellbeing, to the economic and social 8

The new plan builds on the successes of the previous housing and homelessness strategy which include delivering more affordable homes, implementing the Social Inclusion Partnership’s rough sleeping plan and significantly reducing the number of people sleeping on the borough’s streets year on year, minimising Bed and Breakfast use and embarking on a programme of initiatives to support greater access to low cost home ownership.

Cabinet Member for Homes and Families Cllr Tristan Robinson said: “This new Housing and Homelessness Strategy paves the way to enabling residents to access the homes they need. “From families looking to access a home from the housing register, to rough sleepers in need of support to first-time buyers looking to step onto the property ladder, this new strategy has opportunity at its heart. It reflects what our residents have told us they want to see and will be an important part in ensuring those affected by the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic can access the support they need.” For more information please click here

Issues West Berkshire Council has published its draft Recovery Strategy

Covid-19 caused Northcroft Lido summer closure Delays to repairs mean the lido cannot reopen this year. West Berkshire Council and Legacy Leisure are disappointed to announce that Northcroft Lido will remain closed for the summer season.

The Strategy sets out the priority areas the Council will focus on to help the community recover as quickly as possible from the effects of the Covid-19 outbreak. It is structured around three core elements - health, education and the local economy - and gives details of how the council and its partners aim to improve the quality of life of all of those who live or work in the district. In line with the council's commitment to enhanced community engagement, there is a strong emphasis on plans to inform, consult and involve local residents in the development and delivery of these local recovery plans. The council has also published its Recovery Action Plan as an appendix to the Strategy. This provides information about what has been done to date to support the local recovery in each of the three priority areas as well as further planned actions. Councillor Lynne Doherty, Leader of West "Our Recovery Action Plan shows that we have acted quickly to help mitigate the ongoing impact of Covid-19 on the district, such as support for local businesses through relaxing licensing obligations, encouraging environmentally friendly active travel and the safe reopening of our schools. We now have the opportunity to take this work even further and will engage with partners and the wider community to support a strong local recovery."

Despite the Government announcing that outdoor pools can open from 11th July repairs to the lido before it can reopen have been delayed by Covid-19. Each year West Berkshire Council has to wait for groundwater levels to fall to allow the pool to be emptied without risk to the structure and before any decisions can be made on repairs required to open the Lido safely. This year ground water levels did not fall sufficiently until early June to allow the pool to be emptied without that risk. Due to Covid-19, specialist contractors would not be available to carry out the work until August. Given that the work would take two to three weeks to complete, then a full ten days is required to fill the pool and that under the current contract the Lido only is required to remain open until the first weekend in September, the opportunity to open in 2020 is very limited. In addition, guidance for swimming has been developed around social distancing, but natural bottle necks will occur, for example, in changing rooms and at access points to the outdoor area. After much deliberation, the council and Legacy Leisure have agreed not to open the Lido this year but work to achieve maximum availability of the leisure centres as quickly and as safely possible and focus on the Lido being ready for the 2021 season. For more details please access www. leisurecentre.com.

UK’s biggest ever organised crime bust and landmark domestic abuse Bill. It’s been a busy and fruitful month tackling crime with some big victories for the police. First, we carried out the biggest ever organised crime bust in the UK, Operation Venetic. Our National Crime Agency and fantastic police forces working together with their international counterparts smashed the communications system of organised criminals. Police have made hundreds of arrests so far and seized drugs, cash and firearms – there is much more of this to come. Our efforts to end ‘county lines’ continue and the British Transport Police along with their amazing sniffer dogs are catching people who are using the transport system to move drugs around the country, including stations like Andover and Basingstoke. And I’m proud to report our government has passed the Domestic Abuse Bill, which will strengthen protections for victims and make sure perpetrators are brought to justice. The Bill sets a legal definition of domestic abuse, ends the ‘rough sex defence’ and will provide safe accommodation for victims and their children. Domestic abuse is a disgusting crime and we will never tolerate it. And through all this we are progressing well towards recruiting 20,000 new police officers across the country and I will make sure a good chunk of them come to North West Hampshire. As we gradually recover from Covid and leave lockdown, please remember to follow the guidelines and look out for each other.

Care for

Carers are special people. They tirelessly devote their time to the needs and wants of the person they are caring for, whether they are looking after a member of the family or are employed in some capacity. The thing about being a carer though, is that very often they forget to look after themselves. Live-in care specialists at Helping Hands have stated that one in ten adults in the UK are carers in some form, which means nearly seven million people. The health of carers is a recognised issue and to deliver the best of care and to ensure their own health, physical and mental, a carer needs to practise self-care on a regular basis.

most certainly your feet. To do this with ease, it is important to keep your body in shape with regular gentle exercise. Yoga or Tai Chi are good regimens for all ages. It is also a good idea to start your day with some gentle stretching exercises. This means your body is better able to take any strain when lifting early in the day.

Keep Fit

Be sure to get those all important 5-a-day, but remember to treat yourself too. If you need a break from cooking duties, consider giving your local Meals on Wheels service a call.

Downtime

Caring can mean a lot of time being on your feet all day. You may have lifting to do - assisting in getting in and out of bed, helping them to the bathroom, guiding them in and out of their wheelchair or walker etc. This can take its toll on your back, your muscles and

carers Being around like minded people who deal with similar pressures and issues can help you feel less alone and also tthere is the opportunity to learn from other's experiences.

There should be no guilt involved in taking the time to look after yourself and it enables you to provide the best care you can.

Respite care enjoy. It might be a hobby or simply a time to catch up on your favourite TV shows but it should be something you like to do on your own. Try to plan some specific time in each day or week, so you have something to look forward to. You may like to get in touch with with your local Carers' Club which provides information about carer support groups and a range of other support. It can be a lonely life as a carer, especially if your your patient is not able to communicate very well. Being able to spend time with other people can be a refreshing and re-energising change where you can talk about things you enjoy or things that interest you, or even just spend companionable time together over a drink or a cup of coffee.

When it comes to self-care, it is not unusual for a carer to feel they are being selfish if they think about their 50-60+ hours a week looking after someone, you do need to think about giving yourself a break. Whether you want to go on a holiday or simply take a break to recharge your batteries, there is respite care available. The importance of being able to take some time away from your patient cannot be underestimated. According to a survey carried out by the Carers Trust, carers providing more than 50 hours of care per week are twice as likely to report ill-health as those not providing care.

Cherries

Quite a delicacy and very much seasonal in terms of their availability here in the UK. Few pitted cherries to a salad bowl will provide a beautifully sweet hit when amongst other savoury ingredients. Equally adding a handful to natural yogurt will have you on your way to your 5 a day, and will mean only natural sugars are present in this snack or dessert.

Brocolis

Broccoli has had somewhat of a resurgence ever since the media and marketing agencies branded it as a ‘superfood’. It appears in many a salad whether it is ‘charred’, ‘burnt’ or raw, it goes beautifully in a soup and when mixed into a tomato-based sauce for example it adds its own unique texture to the dish, or even a stir fry.

Seasonal ine FOOD

Whether it’s fruit, vegetables, freshwater fish or seafood you fancy, eating what’s in season now can mean tasty, nutritious, sustainable and cost-effective choices.

Plums

Plums vary in colour from green and yellow to the more commonly known deep red and purple fruits. They are unusual with the cloudiness to their skins, which is of no concern and is natural to all plum varieties. Plum trees can be planted over winter and then the fruits should be ready for picking when it comes round to summertime.

Tomat oes

There are thousands of varieties of tomato! An extremely popular fruit (not a vegetable) worldwide due to their versatility being edible both raw and cooked, they are found tinned, sundried, and in hundreds of sauces too. Sauces that are made fresh from tins of tomatoes are fantastic as they can provide one of your 5 a day, and that’s before any vegetables have been added in.

Should Pregnant and Breastfeeding Women

Take DHA Supplements? One of the reasons breastfed infants may have better cognitive and visual development is because human milk contains long-chain, polyunsaturated fatty acids like the omega-3 DHA, while many available infant formulas do not. “Consensus guidelines recommend that women should aim to consume an average of 200 mg” of DHA daily during pregnancy. “Simply encouraging pregnant women to eat more fish is not so simple, because most fish are to some extent contaminated” with toxic pollutants, such as mercury. (See my video Mercury vs. Omega-3s for Brain Development for more on this.) Additionally, some pollutants, like PCBs, can get stuck in our bodies for decades. What about purified fish oil? The methods supplement manufacturers use, like distillation, leave considerable

amounts of PCBs and other pollutants in the products, so much so that when taken as directed, salmon, herring, and tuna oils would exceed the tolerable daily intake of toxicity. Thankfully, one can get the benefits without the risks by getting DHA from algae instead (which is where the fish originally get it themselves). However, putting all the available studies together, it turns out adding DHA to formula does not appear to help infant cognition after all, similar to other recent compilations of evidence that show “no significant benefit.” There may not be any demonstrable “clear and consistent” benefits, but there are new studies on this coming out all the time. If it’s harmless, maybe women should just take it to be on the safe side? The problem is that it may not be harmless in large doses. In a study in which women were given a whopping 800mg of DHA a day during

pregnancy, infant “girls exposed to higher-dose DHA in utero [in the womb] had lower language scores and were more likely to have delayed language development than girls from the control group.” So, the “absence of clear positive effects and the possible presence of negative effects in the children raise the question whether DHA supplementation is justifiable...” But it was a really large dose, suggesting that there may be “an optimum DHA level below and above which DHA might be detrimental to the developing brain.” See Should Vegan Women Supplement with DHA during Pregnancy? for my discussion of those on plant-based diets.

Trevor Langley Wine Appreciator

Sparklers Sparkle rs and Spirits Prosecco is extremely popular and Pizzolatto Organic Prosecco (11% vol) certainly does not disappoint. This impressive, sparkling production exudes a fine and persistent perlage, which pleases the nasal senses with fruits, including apples and pears, that follow on to the mouthfeel and palate sensation. I found this prosecco crisp and refreshing, being produced utilising 100% Glera grapes to great advantage. Irresistible Cava (11.5% vol) is another most popular sparkling wine, that adorns many dining tables, constantly. Made by Castillo Perelada, renowned for excellent sparkling wines, this exclusive blend delivers a dry, refreshing experience that continues throughout – to the very last enjoyable drop! Grape: Macabeo. Taittinger is very much recognised as one of the leading champagne Houses. This family-owned and managed company

(Founded 1734) produces outstanding, multi award-winning champagnes. The use of Chardonnay grapes is of great importance and results in exceptional champagne productions, which are admired and appreciated by many. Taittinger Brut Reserve (12.5% vol) is a favourite for champagne lovers, worldwide. The bouquet and splendid perlage are just perfect and the balanced, superb mouthfeel follows, to complement. The palate’s sensation completes the experience with excellent depth and a most memorable finish. For the spirits, I found Passion Fruit, Mango & Lime Flavoured Gin Limited Edition (40% vol) to suit my palate perfectly. The description on the bottle states ‘Zesty & Vibrant’ – I agree. Infused with the flavours of passion fruit, mango and lime, this 5-times distilled production has a splendid combination of tropical

inclusions, with the lime citrus addition, balancing wonderfully. Irresistible Pineapple Rum Spirit Drink (40% vol) has a good number of ‘devotees’, too. Produced using Dominican Republic rum and 8-year aged Barbados rum, this certainly ‘comes through’ with its tropical taste, evoking thoughts of paradise, with pineapples and sunshine. Happy Days! I located these drinks at a Co-op store. The Co-op is dedicated and committed to Fairtrade, also. Expert advice is always available, which includes valuable information about pairing wines/drinks with foods. Excellent quality beverages include beers, wines and spirits, with several award winners amongst the ranges. If Co-op membership is of interest, then customers can enjoy rewards on selected products and purchases. 15 19

Courgette A great way to use up the glut of courgettes around around this time of the year.

20 20 38

Gratin Preparation time: 20 mins Cooking time: 30 mins Serves 4

Ingredients • 2 tbsp olive oil • 800g/1lb 12oz courgettes, sliced

Method

1.

into 5mm/¼in rounds • A few sprigs of thyme • A few basil leaves • 100ml/3½fl oz crème fraîche • 50ml/2fl oz milk • 1 tsp plain flour

2.

• 75g/2½oz Gruyère or similar cheese, grated • Salt and freshly ground black pepper

3.

Preheat the oven to 200C/Fan 180C/Gas 6. Place the olive oil in a heavy large, lidded frying pan over a low heat. When hot, add the courgettes, herbs and season with salt and pepper. Cover the pan and cook gently for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the courgettes have softened slightly but still have a little bite. Transfer the courgette and herb mixture to an ovenproof dish. Whisk together the crème fraîche, milk and flour in a bowl and season with salt.

4.

Pour the resulting mixture over the courgettes. Don’t worry if there is not enough to submerge the courgettes as the mixture will bubble up when cooking.

5.

Sprinkle over the Gruyère cheese. Bake in the oven for around 25 minutes, or until brown and bubbling. Serve as a side dish, or as a light supper with crusty bread and a green salad. Note: Gruyère is a wonderfully melty Swiss cheese but if you can’t find it, try Emmental, Beaufort, Jarlsberg or Comté. Drizzle with coconut chilli sauce. Serve with steamed rice, salad and lime.

Effective Bodyweight training can be done whenever and wherever, with minimal or no equipment and generally involves performing movements which aid everyday life. Use your bodyweight as the sole form of resistance and help your body to move naturally. You can adapt each exercise to your ability, adjusting the intensity of your training. Build progression by increasing the difficulty level, i.e. range of motion, lever length, number of repetitions or adjusting the speed. Functional Bodyweight Exercise builds strength and endurance, encouraging natural movement of your body whilst also providing the ideal preparation to move onto more vigorous exercise in the future.

your skin Hello ... I'm Yvette, Skin Health & Beauty Therapist at Baytree Beauty & a Tropic Skincare Ambassador. I'll be talking all things Skin Health & Beauty related. Questions or advice, please send an email to info@localbuzzmagazine.com Face coverings may be the cause of uncomfortable side effects for your skin. They could also aggravate any pre-existing skin conditions such as rubbing on acne or eczema. Wearing a face covering can lead to heat and humidity around the nasal and mouth area, creating possible skin irritation which in turn can cause rashes or breakouts in the area. The accumulation of sweat sitting on the skin underneath the covering can irritate the skin’s surface and clogg pores. Increased sebum production in the area can also

rebelling underneath the mask? As we now all adorn the latest new accessory of a face covering, is your skin beginning to rebel underneath it? clogg pores resulting in increased blackheads and possible breakouts. Want to prevent this from happening? Nurture and prepare your skin prior to wearing your face covering. Avoid wearing makeup underneath. Gently cleanse your skin and apply products that will help your skin’s hydration levels and help protect your skin’s barrier. Choose treatment toners and serums with ingredients that boost your skin’s hydration, refine pores, nourish, soothe, repair and protect. Opt just for a serum on this occasion, there will be no need to apply a moisturiser under your face covering, the correct serum will be enough to provide your skin with what it needs. Spritz your skin with a

refreshing toner packed with vitamins and hydrating ingredients such as aloe vera & cucumber juices, leave the skin damp and apply your serum packed with ingredients such as hyaluronic acid for hydration and prebiotics and bioflavonoids for balancing and calming the skin. Choose face coverings of a natural material such as cotton and avoid synthetic materials. If you have to wear one for a long period of time then spritz your skin occasionally with your treatment toner to refresh and calm. On removal of your face covering, gently cleanse the skin to remove any sweat and excess sebum. Apply products as before and include an SPF if going outdoors. Once or twice a week include an active mask into your skincare regime to repair and help the skin recover from any side affects. Stay safe. 27

Glow at Home

Preparing your Skin for Life After Lockdown Come on ladies, we all did it – promised to use this time indoors to finally give our skin the TLC it’s been craving. Yet here we are, manically searching for a quick fix to revive our skin so we can portray the glowing goddess we so desperately want to envision on our socially distanced pub visits. Here’s 3 holy grail skincare essentials with proven instant results:

1.

The New Kind of Exfoliation For many of us, we were taught to wash our face twice a day and exfoliate twice a week to make sure our skin stays clean while still maintaining its natural oils it needs to stay healthy. What we weren’t told is that often a lot of these grainy exfoliators on the market will leave your skin worse than before. Harsh exfoliators lead to dry spots, redness and irritation. The Body Shop’s ‘Vitamin C Glow-Revealing Liquid Peel’ (£18.50) is designed to give you the exfoliation it needs without damaging your skin cells. The gel-to-peel consistency allows you to quite literally see the results in your hands as your dead skin cells lift off. Not only does it smell amazing but it gives you immediate results! Skin feels rejuvenated and refreshed within a matter of seconds.

2.

Bye-Bye Blemishes There is not much worse than looking forward to that date that’s been set in your diary for weeks and feeling a spot coming through the night before. Avoiding the overnight panic has never been easier – finally! A spot remover that actually works! There is no doubt that Origins rule the board when it comes to skincare and this product is award-winning for a reason. This ‘Super Spot Remover – Blemish Treatment Gel’ (£16) is revolutionary and a skincare must-have. Simply dab a thin layer onto the blemish as needed and wait for it to do its magic.

3.

Pampered Pores Who says you can’t have a pamper in the morning? Face masks are a great way to boost skins hydration while also bringing the spa to your bedroom – who doesn’t love a little bit of luxury? Fresh’s ‘Black Tea Instant Perfecting Mask’ (£29) is the faultless indulging essential that gives you immediate results. Softer and velvet-like skin in 10 minutes thanks to the use of black tea and lychee seed extract. Introducing a smoothing mask to your pre-makeup routine is highly recommended for longer lasting a perfected base.

With all this time indoors our skin is lacking the usual cycle of care. Skincare has become the victim of our lack of routine and ever-changing guidelines but, no-one need notice!

Establishments such as businesses, transport systems, restaurants, schools and community organizations are developing plans to resume normal or phased operations during the COVID-19 pandemic thus avoiding another closure of their business. These plans include an initial assessment to identify people who may be infectious to limit the spread of COVID-19 infections as they enter their establishment. Temperature measurement can be one part of the assessment to determine if a person has an elevated temperature potentially caused by a COVID-19 infection.

Minimise your risk of infection One method to measure a person's surface temperature is the use of "no-touch" or non-contact temperature assessment devices, such as thermal imaging systems (also known as thermal imaging cameras or infrared telethermographic systems) or noncontact infrared thermometers.

Benefits of Non-contact Temperature Assessment Devices

These non-contact devices can quickly measure and display a temperature reading so a large number of people can be evaluated individually at points of entry.

• Non-contact infrared thermometers require minimal cleaning between uses. •

Vogue Portugal’s ‘Madness Issue’ Exposes

the Lack of Inclusivity within Fashion Timeless, classic, future-proof? All words associated with the iconic fashion magazine, Vogue. Whether headlines are drawn by Hermès claiming to have monopolised elegance or Rihanna ‘rew riting the rules’, the covers of Vogue are distinguished for their uniqueness, their distinctiveness, but most recently, their controversy. Vogue Portugal, within one of their four July/August 2020 covers, titled ‘The Madness Issue’, depicted a young, naked woman bathing inside a psychiatric hospital, whilst two nurses poured water over her head. Vogue made history once again! After an astounding online backlash from the press and mainstream media, Vogue Portugal removed the cover and said it ‘deeply apologises’. Some of the vast criticism surrounding this feature suggested that it was a source of trigger for some exposed to it and upheld an incorrect and damaging depiction of psychiatric treatment. Amidst the online backlash, Vogue Portugal initially refused to remove the cover, insisting on Twitter that it navigated ‘the historical context of mental health and is designed to reflect real life and authentic stories.’ Upon release of the cover, the model featured in the bathtub, Simona Kirchnerova, stated on Instagram that

32

it was a ‘career highlight’ for it had been her first feature in Vogue and the nurses pouring water over her are her mother and grandmother. Vogue’s insensitive portrayal of mental illness and its therapies should not be considered in isolation. This raises wider questions about fashion and whether its trends remain rooted in archaic ideas. Through glamorising female vulnerability, the feature on ‘Madness’ explicitly clouds the magazine’s attempt to bring awareness to mental health. The removal of the woman’s ability to wash herself fosters damaging connotations of mental health, illustrating the infantilization of those struggling with mental illness. Does this cover serve as an emblem which exposes the distasteful representations of mental health, body

image and well-being within the wider fashion industry? Inclusivity, diversity and ultimately, representation of these issues within iconic publications, such as Vogue, are paramount to the increasing standardisation of inclusivity within society. Though Vogue’s feature on mental illness reaped the adverse reaction it had presumably intended to, the backlash it received should be interpreted as society’s refusal to accept archaic and unsavoury representations of mental well-being; a beacon of hope that times are changing, even if the road ahead is a little longer for fashion.

Our ethos is to help the whole person in order to help them make better life decisions and improve their lives where possible, a caring approach in a non judgemental and caring manner.

Become a Volunter at Newbury Soup Kitchen Six years ago I started volunteering at the Newbury Foodbank on a weekly basis. During the sessions I became aware of the local rough sleepers, vulnerable and homeless people in Newbury and surrounding areas. The street homeless would come in for food, support, a chat and company. At that point there was no food being served on a Thursday or Saturday in the town by other organisations. The street homeless were having to go from Wednesday breakfast to Friday breakfast without food so they were very hungry. There was a couple who had been living in a tent and over time I started to hear their story and difficulties. I began to work with them and to help put together some outreach, slowly gaining their respect and trust. Late 2016 I approached The Salvation Army in Newbury and asked if I could set up a Soup kitchen for the Thursday in the hall. Newbury Soup Kitchen in the Salvation Army hall opened in January 2017 initially providing tinned soup and beans, food kindly donated from the Foodbank and bread and fruit from Waitrose. At this point the plan was only to open a few tins of soup each week, sit and chat to the people who came in, wash up and go home. How wrong I was, I didn't appreciate how all these wonderful people would get under mine and the volunteers skin! Three years on we feed up to 60 people

a week with nutritious food cooked by volunteers with food hygiene qualifications. We also receive weekly donations from Pret a Mange, Greggs and many supermarkets such as Waitrose, Tesco and Marks & Spencer. Clients who come in and use the Soup kitchen have many issues and requirements. They range from drug and alcohol dependency, mental health, dual dependency as well as being very lonely and vulnerable. We offer outreach services where possible and sign post to other services who can help. We work closely with the Community Nurses and Dentists who provide support in our new Wednesday sessions on an outreach basis. We are also very lucky to have weekly hairdresser (also a Paramedic), foot care specialist and Sovereign Housing Advocacy. We can help support with ID, opening bank accounts and mentoring. I have worked hard to build relations with the local Statutory Organisations and local Charities. As a result Newbury Soup Kitchen is on the panel for all local statutory meetings involving homelessness. Statutory Organisations and charities collaborate and work together to support individuals as they need it. This allows provide support and outreach to our clients helping them through the process of gaining confidence and support into housing and work.

Our volunteers have a huge range of skills including a recently retired GP, paramedic, retired trained nurses who work as our first aiders, mental health nurses, vet, Acting Community Police Officer, social worker, dual diagnosis mental health care worker who has worked directly in residential homes for people with severe addictions and psychosis for example. They all work in a voluntary capacity and dedicate their time with kindness and care. All our volunteers are incredibly dedicated and flexible putting all their experience into each and every client who comes through the door. They give their time, listening in a non judgemental way along with laughter and good conversation. We will continue to run our sessions from the Salvation Army Hall until we find a permanent premises of our own. We hope to open these again after lockdown from COVID 19. A new premises will allow us to expand our services further and build into a Community Support Centre under our charity HAVEN 1179298. Newbury Soup Kitchen is a division of this. Through an Amazon wish list and local donations such as JUST GIVING, THE GOOD EXCHANGE and FACEBOOK we are able to provide tents, sleeping bags, flasks, torches etc. to help the street homeless a little more. info@newburysoupkitchen.org.uk www.newburysoupkitchen.org.uk 1 Hambridge Lane Newbury - RG14 5TU

Have you been on holiday and stayed in the most amazing room/hotel that you just love? Or maybe you’re a regular traveller and have come across some pretty nifty set ups in your hotel room that just make life easier?

Holidayy Holida 1.

Once upon a time designing home and residential settings was very different to designing hotels and offices. But great design is blurring the traditional boundaries between these different settings and we’re seeing more and more crossover of ideas. So, if you’re lucky to get away from home this holiday – whether it be abroad or even a staycation in the UK look around the space you’re staying in and consider whether there are any great ideas to take home. Here are a few that have been very popular and if you’ve not already considered them, then maybe they’ll feed your creative juices ...

Sinks with countertops

Do you remember the time when the bathroom basin was a small white sink stood on a pedestal? Not anymore! The pedestal is banished to the history books mostly (unless hugely creative) and sinks tend to be wall mounted with large surrounds/countertops. The countertop allows us to put things around the sink whilst we’re using it. In hotels, it allows us to perch our washbags right there, and layout out all the necessary items we use. At home we may have cabinets and shelves, but I always use the edge of sink to perch things on while I’m using them - even if I store them back in the cabinet. Particularly if you have a guest bathroom give your guests space to layout out their things ... it makes it so much nicer and useable.

Pendant or wall hung bedside light

My bedside lights hang down from the ceiling beside the bed which means the bedside table is completely free for other things – I love not having to use up that precious space for a bedside light. Wall hung angled lights are another option too – free that table!

3.

Artificial planting

The quality of artificial plants and flowers are forever improving. In Walk in sh hotels, restaurants and - Anna Na offices the sheer practicality of artificial plants/ flowers makes them a go-to choice – no need to water, prune and maintain them – a wipe and a dust and you have amazing looking, forever green foliage. Hanging walls are proving popular, as well as indoor plants and amazing flower displays. Foliage can be used to create dividers and zones in spaces, and plants can help create an indoor/outdoor feeling. I mix up real plants and artificial ones to get the best of both worlds.

Feature walls

The creativity of feature walls knows no bounds – from amazing wallpaper, to strong paint colours, to panelling, brickwork and much more. Feature walls are often used in commercial settings to create a focus in an otherwise featureless space – to help zone in or focus activity/ interest into a particular area. In modern homes it’s a great way to create focus in a room that is to all intents and purposes a simple rectangle.

Walk-in showers

Once this was the prevail of luxury hotels but nearly all hower of us that are in a position to aphtali refurbish our bathrooms like to have a walk-in shower. It makes the whole experience so much more pleasurable and easy and again there are some amazing things that can be done inside walk-in showers to create features and interest in them ... to crittal screens, gold/bronze fittings, feature tiles and even mural effects and designs.

6.

Gallery wall

Taken quite literally from art galleries, many stylish homes now feature a wall that creatively and artistically

displays collections of all kinds from artwork, to photography, to ceramics, to taxidermy and much more ... it’s a fabulous way to showcase a collection of any kind and make the most out of one's collection. One of my clients had a whole host of photography and they wanted to know how to display it so I created a gallery wall for them, first laying it out on the floor to work out the placement and then mounting each piece as planned on the floor.

Mixed use seating

Headboards – bedroom

headboards are becoming an art form of their own! Using amazing fabrics, creative surfaces and even the size. A wrap around headboard helps to donate a space in a bigger room but it’s also a way to extend the interior design into the ceiling, creating another surface and dimension to be creative on.

Bench at the end of the bed – this was originally

brought into use by hotels to allow guests to put their luggage on in order to unpack. However the bench or ottoman at the end of the bed is commonplace in larger bedrooms, providing a place to perch to put on shoes etc, store items (e.g. cushions/blankets) or somewhere to put down clothes. Again, it’s possible to be so creative with this piece of furniture to make it a focus at the end of the bed or provide another texture/colour or surface.

10.

Rather than using 3-piece suite, designers are putting together mixed use, and mixed styled seating – a statement sofa with two complimentary but different armchairs, or Pocket door maybe a bench or stools. Alison Kandler It’s a great way to introduce different patterns, textures and colours and when they complement each other and work together, the seating takes on an artistic dimension not just

Mixed seating - Turner Pocock

a functional use.

Sliding/pocket doors

– I’m a huge fan of these – if only for their practicality and minimalism. They originally appeared in luxury settings to screen off a room for discretion or used in hotels that had little space to play with. If you’re not making a feature of a door, why does it need to open into the room – tuck it into the wall or slide it down the wall and make it discreet and out of the way. They are such a fabulous way to save on small spaces but can also create separation and/or drama by separating or screening off spaces. The taller they are, the more impact they create. So, on your travels, look at what the hoteliers are doing and see if you can bring back a little bit of that magic to put into your own home.

Happy holidays! 35

Days for

Schools Online

Free educational videos launched by the Englefield Estate The Englefield Estate has launched ‘Countryside Days for Schools online’ with a series of educational videos on forestry, farming and the countryside. Due to the coronavirus pandemic, the annual Countryside Days for Schools or ‘Schools Days’, which was first held in 1997, has had to be cancelled for the first time. To bring the experience to children virtually, the Estate team have produced the series of free-to-access videos. Dr Liz Mattison, the Estate’s Community and Education Officer, said: “Schools Days is such an exciting event and gives children the chance to get hands-on learning experiences in farming, horticulture, construction and forestry". "As we are sadly unable to invite the children here this year, for their own safety as well as that of our staff and volunteers, we were keen to give a taste of the experience." “The videos include ideas for outdoor learning, an introduction to the countryside code and how we can all

36

respect and enjoy the environment, as well as teaching children about wildflowers, farming and forestry. We hope that families will watch them together and young minds will be engaged and inspired.” Video topics cover the farming year, a working forest, the countryside code, how plants grow, and how to identify local flowers. More videos on wildlife, horticulture and the environment are going to be added throughout the year. Richard Benyon, Chairman of Englefield Estate, said: “Schools Days was developed over 20 years ago to take local school children out of the classroom and into the countryside to help them discover what is involved in helping to make it a great place to live, work and play". “We’re looking forward to inviting children back in 2021, but in the meantime these videos will help children and adults discover more about the world around them for themselves and give them some ideas for activities to keep young minds engaged.” The first Schools Days event in 1997 hosted 315 children from five schools in Berkshire. In 2019 over 3,000 children from 50 primary schools across the county attended, free of charge. To view the Countryside Days for Schools online content, visit www.englefieldestate.co.uk

Suppor t Support your child

as they start Secondary School Moving from primary to secondary school is a huge rite of passage. With new routines to learn and teachers to remember, all children will feel a mixture of excitement, fear and anxiety about moving into year 7. This year brings complications with COVID-19 affecting the usual transition events held by secondary schools. Everything has moved online and many children won’t have visited their new school. So how can you prepare and support them as they start their first term?

Check

communications carefully From uniform lists to house teams and timetables, there’s lots to learn. Keep on top of emails and letters sent out from your new school. Having information will help your child feel more in control. Stick up a copy of their timetable and write down names of key staff they need to know.

Plan

their journey

Practise the route to school until they feel confident to do it independently. If they need to take public transport, remember to apply for a pass in good time. Give them a small amount of

38 28

money for emergencies and make sure they have useful phone numbers saved. Agree what time they are expected home and give them a spare key to use.

Encourage

independence

At school students must follow their timetable, bring correct equipment to class and submit homework on time. Chores and responsibilities at home will help develop these skills. Resist the temptation to do it yourself and let them take charge of their own belongings. The summer holidays are a perfect time to teach them essentials like washing and ironing clothes.

Living

on a

Boa

It is estimated that there are now more than 15,000 people living afloat full-time on the rivers, canals and coastlines of the UK and that number is very much on the increase, but if you are looking for adventures, there is much more to think about than just the boat. Jackie Osborne interviews Wayne Persence and finds out how it feels living on a sailing boat. Two years ago, Wayne bought a 7m sailing boat, moored it on Poole Quay, Dorset and have been enjoying the experience since. After leaving school, he qualified as a chef, however, unable to make onto the property ladder, living on a boat with low maintenance costs, it was certainly very appealing.

So, what are the joys and challenges of such experience? “Driven by the desire of having my own place and unable to save enough money for a house deposit, the idea of buying a boat, have my own place and not get into debt was the solution”, says Wayne. One of the attractions is that when you want to move (if you ever want to move) you don’t have to sell our home; you simply untie your lines and move your home to a new location. Considering your home can move with the wind (if you have a sailboat), the coastal areas of the whole world are possible future ‘homes’ and much easier to move! Instead of getting the house ready to sell, listing it, having

40

showings, looking for a new house, making sure the logistics all work out and on and on…you simply untie the lines and move your home to a new location.

What about the location? In a marina, you will have a waterfront property for a fraction of the cost that homeowners in the same are paying. In many cases, the view from the maria is even far superior! Boat owners in a marina pay a monthly rent for the boat slip. There is usually a large discount for taking out a longterm contract (i.e. over six months). Other costs include electricity and some marinas charge a liveaboard fee. Compare that with the standard bills you get living in a house and you will see great savings. Another consideration is safety. When have you ever heard of someone being burgled, murdered or violated in a marina!? Furthermore, there are far fewer valuable things in a boat thus making it not so attractive to robbery.

9

Reasons why living on a boat

in a marina is better than living in a house on land. • You can move your boat and live anywhere Community Feel

Marketplace availability

I asked Wayne how lonely it is to be on a boat 24/7 and he said “because of the proximity of the boats and the need to walk the docks to get out of the marina, you’ll chat with your neighbours several times per day. If someone has an issue, everyone helps. Everyone is always looking out for everyone else”. Having observed the camaraderie amongst liveaboard boaters, it seems to me that friendships are meaningful and fulfilling.

If you ever want to sell your boat, you are not limited to selling to the local area. Your target market includes the whole world rather than just someone that wants a boat.

42

In other words, someone from another country can buy your boat and have it moved. You cannot do that with a house! (Well…at least you cannot do it easily). Whatever kind of boat you buy and however you choose to use it, be aware that living on a boat requires an unwavering, hands-on approach.

• People around you pay millions for your view • The cost of living on a boar in a marina can be much lower • There is often a wonderful liveaboard community • Easy to meet new friends every week

Systems need to be used, tanks need to be filled and emptied, rust spots need to be treated, brasses need to be polished and engines need to be serviced. It is a superb way to live, but if you get lazy, both your boat and your lifestyle will become shabby and unappealing much more rapidly than you think.

• Less Space = Less Crap

To date, Wayne’s experience has been amazing and he is already planning to go bigger. Currently he is saving for a new boat in view of travelling abroad with a bit more comfort.

• Crime rates are lower in marinas than on housing estates

• Cleaning and maintenance are reduced • When selling, there is a huge market

Why we should all eat

South East seafood and where you can get it With some of the UK’s most famous and beautiful coastline, the waters of south east England serve up not only a treat for tourists, but some of the best seafood in the country. Fishing vessels at some of coasts’ busiest fishing ports including Shoreham, Dover, Ramsgate and Whistable catch tonnes of fresh fish and hundreds of different species, from crab, to premium Dover sole and turbot, as well as favourites like mackerel. Making its way from sea to plate in a matter of hours, the local fishing industry supplies supermarkets, restaurants, cafes and hotels across the country with fresh seafood, sustaining thousands of jobs. But with the hospitality industry hit hard by the Coronavirus crisis, especially in the lucrative London market, the seafood industry is now looking to those cooking at home to support fishermen along the coastline of Sussex, Kent and Essex. By buying and cooking delicious seafood caught in local waters, shoppers are not only supporting one of the country’s most important industries, there are also plenty of science-backed health benefits that support all types of lockdown lifestyles. From Omega-3 fats that boost brain function and maintain heart health to vitamins that reduce fatigue and improve skin and hair, adding just two portions of fish to your diet can have a big impact on daily life. Sea

for Yourself is a campaign launched by Seafish, the public body that supports the £10bn UK seafood industry, in partnership with the Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs to encourage people to cook with UK caught fish species. Fresh seafood is available from local supermarkets or fishmongers and an array of traditionally wholesale suppliers in the south east have adapted to offer home deliveries. Bishops Stortfordbased Marrfish, for example, now offers nationwide deliveries of its fish boxes directly to customers’ doors. It offers box options to suit a range of budgets and requirements, including its Omega 3 box and its new BBQ box to help al-fresco cookers branch out from the usual burgers. Ben English, Operations Director at Marrfish, said: “70% of what we catch in the UK is exported and 70% of what we eat is imported, during these times it has been important for us to make seafood as accessible to the people at home as we possibly can. “We have some amazing fish caught from waters around the local area which are easy to cook, we just need to all give it a go!” Julie Waites, Regional Manager for South East England at Seafish, said: “Many of our fish businesses can’t currently supply to restaurants or export and it’s great

that we can all continue to support our national seafood industry by continuing to buy, eat and enjoy the south east’s delicious and diverse seafood.” “Our insights team has seen a spike in Google searches for seafood recipes since the start of lockdown, showing people are keen to try something new and there’s never been a better time to start cooking with locally-caught seafood as there’s so much that’s in season at the moment. “To lessen the demand on traditional species like cod and haddock, we actively encourage consumers to be more adventurous and try a wider range of fish and shellfish. It’s easy to opt for what you know and love, but you’ll probably be pleasantly surprised with the variety of flavours and recipes that are opened up by choosing lesser-known species.” For more information and recipes go to www.fishisthedish.co.uk

Unsurprisingly The Shed is a (large) garden shed in Brentwood, Essex that has been converted into a recording studio and multimedia space. It boasts professional grade equipment to allow the recording and production of audio visual material.

music is not right for the channel.

As you might expect this happens via a live performance of original material where a band/artist get to strut their stuff in front of the camera and have it professionally recorded for YouTube.

From there it’s a matter of being selected based upon your diversity and talent which was mentioned earlier in the article. Once selected you’ll need to make the journey to Brentwood, Essex for your day in the studio.

Ralph Mullan, the founder of the Shed Session, owner of The Shed Studio and self-confessed music addict, has played and worked with unsigned bands for many years. He has wanted to turn a dream of owning a studio and his desire to help gigging unsigned talent to climb the super tough music ladder into a reality for many years. Ralph recognised the insatiable appetite of today’s social media platforms for content and saw The Shed Session going some way towards satisfying this must have for any aspiring talent. The Shed Session welcomes and encourages diversity and wants to showcase people from all walks of life, all ages and all styles. There is absolutely no reason for anyone to think that their

How to do

a professional

detailer's job of cleaning your Car Interview with James Ford, Co-Founder of AutoBead

Cars get you from A to B, they also serve as a particularly important part of our identity. The make and model of your car is not really important. In some circles it may suggest we like more power, it may suggest we prefer elegance and certainly in many cases, it suggests we have a growing family and we need more space. What is most important is how your car is maintained. A car is often the second biggest purchase we will ever make after a home. Keeping it wellmaintained shows that we care about how others perceive us and it shows that we value the purchase that we worked so hard to make. We are all busy people, and cleaning

a car can seem like a daunting task. However, once you know how it is done right it can become a simple habit you can introduce to your weekly or monthly routine which is both therapeutic and rewarding. There are few satisfactions in the world that match standing back and looking at a clean car which is now the shiniest on the street.

Here is a how you can do it (safely) in

8 simple steps:

a pre-cleaner over the car. 1. Spray A citrus pre-wash product will begin to break down dirt without you having to scrub it off.

2.

Rinse the car to remove the dirt the pre-wash has broken down.

3.

Use two buckets, one with fresh water and your premium shampoo, another to rinse your wash mitt in after using it on the car.

a wash mitt and not a sponge. 4. Use A sponge keeps dirt and grit on its surface which can scratch the car. A wash-mitt brings the dirt into the mitt, keeping it away from the car’s surface.

on your shampoo all 5. Lather over to remove any remaining dirt.

the shampoo is complete, 6. Once dry with a plush drying towel. dry, use a finishing product 7. Once to achieve your perfect finish. Quick detailer or spray sealant products are easy to apply and leave fantastic gloss levels.

finishing products should 8. Most be sprayed on, evened out with

microfibre, and buffed off with a fresh microfibre.

If you’re stuck for time, look for a local professional to do it for you. Local car washes have been known to not refresh their wash mitts and shampoo buckets often enough to avoid causing damage to a customer’s cars. Professionals will cost a little more, however are well worth the extra expense. You’ll be chuffed with the results. If you own a car, show how much you appreciate it by giving it 60-minutes of your time. It’s good exercise and you’ll be chuffed with the results.

Chancellor's Plan for Jobs to help the UK's recovery The Chancellor Rishi Sunak today set out a ‘Plan for Jobs’ that will spur the UK’s recovery from the Coronavirus outbreak. Delivering his Summer Economic Update in Parliament, the Chancellor announced a package of measures to support jobs in every part of the country, give businesses the confidence to retain and hire, and provide people with the tools they need to get better jobs. The plan for jobs is the second part of a three-phase plan to secure the UK’s economic recovery from coronavirus. Throughout the pandemic, the UK Government has acted with speed to protect lives and safeguard jobs. The first stage was a £160 billion support package, which included £49 billion of extra funding for the country’s vital public services including the NHS, paying the wages of nearly 12 million people and supporting over a million businesses through grants, loans and rates cuts. As the UK enters the second phase in its recovery, the Chancellor’s plan is designed to support jobs by focussing on skills and young people, create jobs with investment in shovelready projects and greening our infrastructure, and protect jobs through a VAT cut for the hospitality sector and a landmark Eat Out to Help Out discount scheme for diners. The Chancellor of the Exchequer Rishi Sunak said: Throughout this crisis I have never been the prisoner of ideology. For me, this has never just

52

been a question of economics, but of values. We believe in the nobility of work. We believe in the inspiring power of opportunity. We believe in the British people’s fortitude and endurance. Our plan has a clear goal: to protect, support and create jobs. It will give businesses the confidence to retain and hire. To create jobs in every part of our country. To give young people a better start. To give people everywhere the opportunity of a fresh start. The Chancellor said that following this second phase focusing on jobs, there will be a third phase focusing on rebuilding, with a Budget and Spending Review in the autumn.

Supporting jobs As part of the plan to support jobs, a Job Retention Bonus will be introduced to help firms keep furloughed workers. UK Employers will receive a one-off bonus of £1,000 for each furloughed employee who is still employed as of 31 January 2021. A new £2 billion Kickstart Scheme will also be launched to create hundreds of thousands of new, fully subsidised jobs for young people across the country. Those aged 16-24, claiming Universal Credit and at risk of long-term unemployment, will be eligible.

Funding available for each six-month job placement will cover 100% of the National Minimum Wage for 25 hours a week – and employers will be able to top this wage up.

Creating jobs The plan will also create tens of thousands of jobs through bringing forward work on £8.8 billion of new infrastructure, decarbonisation and maintenance projects. This includes a £3 billion green investment package that could help support around 140,000 green jobs and upgrade buildings and reduce emissions. As part of this package homeowners and landlords in England will be able to apply for vouchers from a £2 billion Green Homes Grant scheme this year to pay for green improvements such as loft, wall and floor insulation that could save some households hundreds of pounds a year on their energy bills while creating thousands of jobs for tradespeople. And a £1 billion programme will make public buildings, including schools and hospitals, greener, helping the country meet its ambitions of achieving Net Zero by 2050, whilst investing in our future prosperity. Keeping your business

and personal profile le

out there is key As we all went into lockdown and globally all live business events were being cancelled, it became evident for companies from startup to large corporations this would cause a major impact. Boards and marketing departments needed to react quickly to keep the conversations flowing with their current and perspective clients and partners. Digital marketing is already established as part of the mix, but it had never been more important. However, to replicate a live face-2face event is a challenge as all elements of a marketing integrated programme have a role to play to create the balance for brand and sales. Over the past few months we have helped companies pivot their event plans to include webinars, their own virtual events and for them to speak at key vertical and horizontal market virtual conferences. Helping them to identify what is out there on a local, national and global scale and to plan. Using this opportunity for them to create new content for multi platforms and for them to plan to be ready when live events return.

Some large exhibitions decided to cancel entirely until 2021, whereas some took on the challenge to pivot to virtual and are now planning hybrid events in the interim. What we know is that it is a saturated environment, many online events competing for airtime, especially if you are looking for some online networking in real-time with most attendance on a complimentary basis. It is important to accept that engagement is far less predictable and the attrition rates of attendees sporadic. This is a fact, but doing nothing is not the answer. Behind the scenes we have been working with organisers and venues for a safe return, industry wide procedures to create trust with workable solutions, as it is evident that people are missing the face-2-face networking that only a live, physical event facilitates. That chance of meeting in a coffee queue or a visit to an exhibition stand to meet someone who you cannot connect with over email to get to know your business associates and clients as human beings on a different level in a relaxed environment over a meal or a drink. It is part of being human to want to interact in person not just talk to a box on a screen, but keeping your company’s brand and your own profile out there has never been more important than in this current market.
