LET'S MAKE BRITAIN KIND AGAIN!

#KIND20 is a global movement for social empathy and worldwide kindness. We use all social media and invite people to share photos and videos of their acts of kindness and/or express gratitude towards any kindness done to them. Furthermore, we recognise and showcase these stories and music to inspire to MAKE BRITAIN KIND AGAIN! This revitalising movement has so far reached over 2.5 million people. Kindness seems to be the new currency in our new KINDemic world. Our #KIND20 campaign has metamorphosed from the global foundation, tuff.earth who championed social integration and community cohesion locally and globally for the last 10 years. This campaign started only 12 weeks ago from the back streets of London, it has now reached the coastlines of Australia , the valleys of Kashmir, the Shantytowns of Uganda, the geysers of Iceland right across the Atlantic to the Rockies in the USA. #KIND20 plans to ensure by the year-end there will be more cases of kindness than cases of COVID19. Many Unsung Heroes globally are being honoured as KIND20 Champions for their selfless services. Now we would love your support to spread the message

of Being Kind to your family, friends, even strangers, particularly in your local community and the nation by abiding by all the guidelines in place designed to protect all our citizens of the UK. Let's support our neighbors in their time of need and spread the message of positivity and kindness. We would love you all to enthuse people of all cultures in and around Britain to find their local champions in their towns and cities, so together we can MAKE BRITAIN KIND AGAIN and let's turn the year of 2020 into #KIND20. We are also looking for PR Marketing firms who are happy to find sponsors for the new currency of the world called kindness. Because there is no price to help deliver a better BRITAIN for all our children. KIND20 is on a mission to bring positive teams on board to steer people to a

kinder alternative and to ensure that we as multi-cultural Britain walk into 2021 and the decade with Hope and Optimism, so MAN-KIND can transform into KIND-MAN. Currently tuff.earth is partnering: NEEDS Marketing in Reykjavik, Iceland; Plane Crazy in Mumbai, India; Civic Reputation in Melbourne, Australia; My Passion My Life Media, Nigeria, Africa, French Consultancy U.K Mr. Geoff Baker UK (former publicist of The Beatles & Sir Paul & Linda McCartney). West Berkshire Council launches Digital Strategy 2020 - 2023

New Digital Strategy to further improve service delivery and pave the way for 5G, ultrafast broadband and full fibre connectivity. West Berkshire Council has formally launched its new Digital Strategy 2020-2023 to further improve service delivery and pave the way for 5G, ultrafast broadband and full fibre connectivity across the district. Under the ambitious, three year plan, the Council will implement new digital technologies and processes to make it easier for residents to access Council services online and keep them better informed and for staff to work more efficiently. The Digital Strategy will also harness the benefits of the more digital working environment that was accelerated by the UK Covid-19 outbreak in March 2020. In addition,

New community based support service up and running

the Digital Strategy outlines the Council's community leadership to help spearhead development of a modern Digital District that features 5G mobile phone coverage, ultrafast broadband, full fibre connectivity including more public Wi-Fi spots and electric vehicle charging points. The strategy will foster partnerships to implement these latest digital technologies throughout West Berkshire for the benefit of residents, businesses and visitors. As part of the Digital Strategy, the Council will play an active role in ensuring that those who live and work in West Berkshire are able to improve their digital skills, as well as implementing measures to avoid digital exclusion. These actions include making digital transactions simpler and easier to understand, commissioning training opportunities and providing IT equipment to public facilities. Councillor Joanne Stewart, Executive Member for Internal Governance, formally approved the new Digital Strategy on Thursday 20 August. Councillor Stewart said: "The Digital Strategy sets out how the Council intends

to embrace new technologies, working practices and digital techniques to ensure it can operate as efficiently as possible and provide the best possible digital services for residents. "I am also excited by the role the Council will take with our partners in creating a Digital District. This will provide the technological infrastructure available to citizens, businesses and visitors, such as ultrafast broadband, 5G and full fibre connectivity." Nick Carter, Chief Executive, West Berkshire Council, added: "This new strategy sets out our information and communications technology ambitions for the next three years." Some activities are a continuation of our earlier strategy while other elements are new. It reflects on our experiences of Covid-19 and as such signals a new commitment to accelerating our digital delivery within both the Council and the wider District. "The Delivery Plan that accompanies this Strategy contains strong governance and details the allocation of new resources as well as internal cost efficiencies such as reduced maintenance and licensing costs, to ensure that the ambitions are realised." isolation and loneliness, is funded by the council's Public Health and Wellbeing Team. Eight Bells for Community Strength is a separate service to Eight Bells for Mental Health, which some residents may be familiar with but will be delivered under the Eight Bells umbrella. Issues New Coronavirus regional testing site in Newbury A drive-through coronavirus testing facility has opened at the Newbury Showground in Newbury, as part of the Government's UK-wide drive to increase testing. Anyone experiencing a new, continuous cough, a high temperature or a loss of or change in their normal sense of smell or taste, should book a test at: nhs.uk/coronavirus or by calling 119 to find out if they currently have coronavirus. The site sits alongside the existing network of testing sites being set up around the UK. Testing at the new site has already begun. To increase testing for everyone with symptoms across the country, the Government has more than doubled the capacity of the NHS/PHE laboratory network, set up 64 regional test centres and 116 mobile testing units, and introduced home testing kits. Anyone testing positive for the virus will be contacted by NHS Test and Trace to help them track their contacts. This will help people to identify who they may have been in close contact with, protecting others from further transmission. The testing centre is being operated in partnership with Mitie and will offer assisted and self-administered tests. Those tested will receive their results within a few days. Health Minister Lord Bethell said: "The Government continues to rapidly scale up the national effort to boost testing capacity for coronavirus to protect the vulnerable, support our NHS, and ultimately save lives. "This is a national effort and we are proud to be working with a number of partners to turn this ambition into a reality and roll out additional capacity to where it is needed." People love living in Basingstoke and Deane, latest survey shows The borough council carries out research with a representative sample of residents from across the borough to give a picture of what matters most to them, how well the council is doing and what it could do better. The results show an overwhelming 95% of people are satisfied with their local area, compared to 94% in 2017 and higher than the national average of 81%, with 89% feeling a sense of belonging to the borough. The news comes as the borough outlines an ambitious Council Plan, agreed by Cabinet to ensure Basingstoke and Deane remains a great place to live and work over the next four years, setting strong foundations for decades to come and this follows the borough being named in the top 50 places to live in Britain in Halifax's annual Quality of Life survey, based on the area’s employment rate, earnings, housing affordability, health, wellbeing, education, traffic and crime rates. The top five things that make somewhere a good place to live, according to residents, were low levels of crime and anti-social behaviour, clean and litter free streets, health services, affordable housing and shopping facilities. At the top of the list of things that need improving were affordable housing, road, pavement repairs, public transport, health services and activities for teenagers. Council Leader Cllr Ken Rhatigan said: “It is great to hear that the majority of people who live in Basingstoke and Deane love it here, but we are determined to do everything we can to make it an even better place to live, work and visit. For more information about the Council Plan and residents’ survey see www. basingstoke.gov.uk/priorities

Jobs programme for young people opens for applications

Covid-19 has suddenly hit the prospects of our younger generation and we need to turn this around quickly for them. July saw 537,700 1624 year olds claiming unemployment related benefits across the country. That’s an increase of 296,000 claimants from March this year when lockdown began. I’m pleased our much awaited ‘Kickstart Scheme’ has launched which ultimately takes young people off benefits and puts them into quality jobs. If you are a young person currently on Universal Credit, you can get a 6-month job with a local employer, fully funded by the government. You will be paid the National Minimum Wage and you will get the chance to get hands on experience and learn valuable skills at one of our many fantastic companies. And if you are a local business and you take on a young person through this scheme, you will get their full wages covered for 25 hours a week, as well as associated National Insurance contributions. Applications are now underway and over the coming weeks, I will be talking to some of our fantastic businesses in North West Hampshire to see what we can do together to create and maximise good opportunities for our local young people. We have put aside a £2 billion pot for this and if we get this right, we can create hundreds of thousands of fully funded, high quality jobs in the country. I want North West Hampshire’s young people to get a good chunk of these. Kit Malthouse MP and Minister for policing and crime. 9

Supports health im local

The Basingstoke and Deane Health and Wellbeing Partnership (HWP) comprises representatives from various local health agencies seeking to improve health outcomes for our local residents. Basingstoke and Deane Health and Wellbeing Partnership is a voluntary network of organisations seeking to improve health outcomes for the population of the borough through local leadership and influence. The Shared Plan to improve Health and Wellbeing in Basingstoke and Deane demonstrates the common commitment from each partner agency to make a contribution to these outcomes and to reduce health inequalities in the borough. It also provides a clear message for us as residents, patients and service users to take responsibility for our own health and to seek support information to help us lead a healthy and happy life.

Helping us all to Be Well The Partnership will aim to improve universal awareness and access to information about health and wellbeing. Community-based activity will focus

10 10

on prevention and early intervention, especially in geographic areas with high levels of deprivation or with ‘at risk’ populations in order to seek to reduce health inequalities. There are two objectives of the Plan:

To support and raise awareness of activities and services in the community, they will: • Act together to improve and disseminate •

Promote healthy choices and self management of health and wellbeing by signposting residents to information, services and activities to using a range of public communication networks available to partner organisations

• Develop collaborative project activity on preventative and early intervention measures in areas or to

populations with higher prevalence of risk and involve residents in the design of activities •

Assist practitioners to offer early intervention options through social prescribing, providing ‘turnaround’ support which may prevent an escalation to ill-health requiring more specialist treatment

To influence the design of places and systems to make it easier for our residents to be and stay well, they will: • Advocate the characteristics of Healthy Communities through all available channels of consultation and development of our major housing growth and regeneration areas2 • Support the local planning authority to conduct health impact assessments for planning applications as necessary,

£250,000 Scammed

from three local residents in one week Our Fraud Victim Support Officer, Malcolm Philips, is urging residents to be wary of scam calls following a total loss of over £250,000 from two Newbury and one Wokingham resident last week.

18 12

The third victim was scammed out of nearly £200,000 from an Amazon scam. The victim was called and told that the National Crime Agency had identified fraudulent activity on their Amazon account. They then went through a series of transactions with the fraudsters thinking they were helping the crime agency with their investigation. PPP would like to remind all residents that HMRC, the Police, your Bank, the Council, the National Crime Agency or any other official body will NEVER ask you to transfer funds following a call of this nature. If in doubt always ring off and independently (not from a number they give you) check with that organisation or talk to your bank.

convincing and charming stories of the fraudsters.”PPP would like to urge all residents to talk about these scams to others to raise awareness. Remember under no circumstances should you withdraw or transfer funds from your account following a cold call, email or text such as above, even if it sounds genuine. You can always validate who you’re speaking to by ringing off and contacting your bank directly, or the organisation they claim to be calling from. The fraudsters may directly tell you not to do this, they will say the ‘fraud’ they are investigating is an inside job and by alerting the organisation you will be undermining their investigation. If you are told this then that’s an immediate alert that you’re being targeted by a fraudster. If you have been scammed in this way or have received a call such as this then please contact:

Malcolm Philips says “People assume that it’s always the old and retired and perhaps more vulnerable people in our society that get scammed. But that’s not always the case. In this instance one victim was a professional and still very much working and another victim was someone in their twenties.

Apple Whether you are biting into a crisp, juicy apple as a snack, chopping it up to incorporate in a salad or gently cooking with cinnamon and sugar to fill a pie, apples that have recently been harvested are going to taste the best and improve your recipes.

Seasonal FOOD

Brussels Sprouts This is a vegetable that has seen a rebirth! Going from smelly, soggy, and strange looking to often the star of the show, Brussels sprouts are seen on menus in even the most high-end restaurants. Brussels sprouts are best in October and if you can, purchase them on the stalk as these will be the freshest.

There is nothing quite like the taste of an apple straight from the orchard (or even picked right off of the tree!), greens pulled from the garden or sweet potatoes fresh from the farm. Produce is usually of better quality and taste when in season.

Parsnips It may look like a carrot's very pale cousin, but a parsnip is much sweeter and more versatile than the familiar orange vegetable. Yes, it is often part of the "soup vegetables" mix sold at the grocery store for homemade stock, but parsnips can be so much more.

Leeks

Cabbage Look for heavy heads that are compact with no browning or wilting leaves. Not just for stuffed cabbage and coleslaw, cabbage can be roasted and sauteed for a somewhat nutty side dish with deep flavour. Surprise your kids with a cheesy cabbage gratin or fried cabbage with bacon.

Leeks can be categorized as summer and winter—the winter harvest begins in October and produces a larger, stronger flavoured vegetable than the warmer month version. They can keep for up to two weeks in the refrigerator and will even do well frozen.

Grapes Autumn is the season for harvesting grapes for many winemakers, so naturally, that is when this candy-like fruit is at its prime. October is the perfect month to try varieties from the farmers market, and perhaps—if you don't eat the whole bunch on the way home—pop them in the oven for a good roast. The skin may become wrinkled, but the sweetness intensifies and the texture softens. They are delicious on a cheesecovered crostini. 13

Dr. Michael Greger M.D. FACLM

Antiperspirants

and Breast Cancer Shaving before applying underarm antiperspirants can increase aluminum absorption. Could this explain the greater number of tumors and the disproportionate incidence of breast cancer in the upper outer quadrant of the breast near the armpit? If aluminum levels are measured in breasts removed during mastectomies, the “aluminum content of breast tissue in the outer regions [near the armpits]… was significantly higher,” presumably due to the “closer proximity to the underarm” area. This is a concern because, in a petri dish at least, it has been demonstrated that aluminum is a so-called metalloestrogen, having proestrogenic effects on breast cancer cells. Long-term exposure of normal breast tissue cells in a test tube to aluminum concentrations in the range of those found

in breasts results in precancerous- type changes. Then, once the cells have turned, those same concentrations “can increase the migratory and invasive activity of…human breast cancer cells” in a petri dish. This is important because women don’t die from the tumor in the breast itself, “but from the ability of the cancer cells to spread and grow at distant sites,” like the bones, lungs, liver, or brain. Over time, researchers concluded that “underarm shaving with antiperspirant/ deodorant use may play a role in breast cancer” after all. Shaving removes more than just armpit hair; it also removes armpit skin. And, while there is very little aluminum absorption through intact skin, the outer layer of skin is stripped off with a razor and antiperspirant is used, there is a six-fold increase in aluminum absorption. Both European safety authorities and the U.S. Food and Drug

Administration (FDA) specifically advise against using aluminum antiperspirants on damaged or broken skin. Recently, it was shown that women with breast cancer have twice the level of aluminum in their breasts compared with women without breast cancer, though this doesn’t prove cause and effect. The latest review on the subject concluded that as a consequence of the new data, given that aluminum can be toxic and we have no need for it, “reducing the concentration of this metal in antiperspirants is a matter of urgency.” Or, at the very least, the label should warn: “Do not use after shaving.” His latest books: How Not to Die, the How Not to Die Cookbook, and How Not to Diet all became instant New York Times Best Sellers. 100% of all proceeds he has ever received from his books, DVDs and speaking engagements have always and will always be donated to charity.

WINES WORTH LOCATING

The winebarn! Germany utilises Riesling grapes to great advantage and the resulting wines have a range from Trocken (dry), Kabinett (medium-dry), through medium and sweet, to Beerenauslese (very sweet) and Eiswein (even sweeter). The WineBarn Ltd company specialises in finding, importing and offering German wines of superb quality and elegance. Their MD is Iris Ellmann. Iris is very much acknowledged and respected. One of the UK’s first Fellows (The Riesling Fellowship), Iris is an expert in German wines. The team are extremely proud of having been recognised as The IWC Best German Wine Merchant. Advice includes recommendations for food pairings, any occasions and events. The WineBarn also offers a Rare and Antique Wines Service, sourcing elusive investment wines from hidden German cellars. For this ‘quest’ I searched for dry Riesling wines. The Allendorf family have a history of over 700 years, living and working in the Rheingau region, which is home to the famed Riesling white wine grape. Their estate is recognised as one of the largest family-owned wineries in the Rheingau. Allendorf Save Water Drink Riesling (dry) has a primary fruity sensation, including apricot and crisp apple, for the nasal senses. Continuing to the mouthfeel and palate’s enjoyment, this is a very popular, refreshing wine.

Since the latter part of the 15th century the Aldinger family have worked the land in the town of Fellbach. Committed and dedicated to their productions, the wines produced have exceptional quality. Aldinger Rebhuhn Riesling Trocken I found to have very acceptable orchard fruits on the bouquet. Certainly crisp and fresh, with a good finish on the palate. Looking after your own mental health Parenting or caring for a child or young person can be tough. It's important to make sure you look after your own mental wellbeing, as this will help you support yourself and those you care about. Try to recognise and acknowledge when you're feeling low or overwhelmed. Struggling with something or experiencing your own mental health problems does not make you a bad parent or carer. It's completely normal to be worried, scared or helpless during difficult times, and feeling this way is nothing to be ashamed of. Is there a friend, fellow parent or carer you trust enough to tell how you're feeling? Maybe there's family, friends or a colleague who could support you or allow you a break? There's plenty of help out there. You should never feel like you have to cope on your own.

22

Young Minds Has lots of support for parents, including a helpline and guidance around parenting with a mental illness. Mind has information and suggestions on how to manage parenting with a mental health problem. Scope has advice on managing stress when caring for a disabled child.

Get support If you're concerned about a child or young person's mental health, you can get free, confidential advice via phone, email or webchat from the Young Minds Parents Helpline.

Action for Children Has a lot of tips to help you spot signs of mental health issues in children and advice on the action you can take to help.

Barnardo's Has also set up the See, Hear, Respond support hub – a dedicated service to help children, young people and their families or carers with problems caused by the coronavirus outbreak.

Any professional that works with children and young people should be able to help you get support. You could talk to a teacher, school nurse, social worker or GP.You can find more information about NHS children and young people's mental health services (CYPMHS) on the NHS website. You can also look at your local Clinical Commissioning Group website and most services also have their own website with information about access, referrals (including whether you can "self-refer") and contact details – try searching in your area for "CYPMHS" or "CAMHS" (children and adolescent mental health services, an older term used for some CYPMHS). If you look after a child that has additional needs, Mencap, the Mental Health Foundation and the National Autistic Society all have excellent resources and support for parents or carers of children with learning disabilities or autism.

Beauty

Tried and Tested

Are the trends really worth it? For those of you whose lockdown boredom didn’t result in jokingly downloading TikTok and reluctantly spending hours scrolling every night, how did you spend your time? Many of us have grown to love this rapidly growing platform, no matter how much we tried not to.

It’s not just dancing trends and cooking videos, TikTok has one of the largest and most welcoming beauty communities that has global input from make-up and skincare lovers around the world. The vast variety and inclusivity of the TikTok beauty community mean that there is something for everyone.

One thing TikTok is extremely good at is convincing you that you need to revamp your beauty library and with thousands of trusted views, you are bound to find the ideal product for every scenario. But, don’t worry, we’re trying all the viral trends and giving you the best of the best, so you don’t have to waste your time and money.

Now, if you’re still behind and aren’t familiar with the world of TikTok, the best way to describe it is ‘Vine’ meets ‘Instagram’. Content is never-ending and delivered to you through the ‘For You’ page.

Is it worth the hype?

This page is filtered footage tailored to your interests and based on your previous likes and comments. This touch of personalisation is both a curse and a blessing, 9 times out of 10 the videos are engaging and entertaining but do be prepared to get lost in time. TikTok offers a niche for everything from ‘Witch-tok’, ‘Pets of TikTok’ and there’s even ‘Draco Malfoy TikTok’! (We’re just as confused as you on t hat one.)

Skincare: The Ordinary AHA 30% + BHA 2% Peeling Solution (£6.30) Rating 5/5 - You’ll find it extremely hard to find a bad review of this product. What is it meant to do? This solution combines alpha hydroxy acids (AMAs) and beta hydroxy acids (BHAs) bringing you the perfect resurfacing product. The acids brighten and even complexion while exfoliating and cleaning built up pore congestion. Ideal for those who are new to acidic skincare and are seeking something light with visible results!

What does it really do? Exactly as it says on the tin. The Ordinary Salicylic Acid 2% Masque (£9.90) Rating 2/5 – This one kind of flopped. What is it meant to do? The pairing of activated charcoal and BHAs are designed to reduce inflammation and unclog pores providing a smooth and radiant finish to the skin after a few weeks of use. What did it really do? While admittedly skin does feel softer and smoother after use, there is no real clear change. Our advice would be to invest in a separate exfoliator and moisturiser (we love the CeraVe Moisturising Lotion). Continue on page 30.

CeraVe Moisturising Lotion (£15) Rating 5/5. Absolutely no faults. What is it meant to do? This simple and fragrance-free moisturiser designed by dermatologists is promised to make skin feel instantly hydrated. Providing long-lasting results from its lightweight and non-greasy formula. What did it really do? This product is perfect for all ages and skin types, especially those who struggle to find a moisturiser that works. Sensitive skin? No problem. Mature skin? Works wonders. This is definitely worth a try.

Make-up: L’Oréal Paris Flash Cat Eye by Infallible (£8.99) Rating 3/5. There’s hope. What is it meant to do? L’Oréal promises up to 24 hours of staying power from this new ‘no-fail’

30

wing applicator. Gone are the days where you struggle to get your eyeliner to match, L’Oréal are offering an ideal solution in a handy eyeliner stencil. What does it really do? While we can’t fault the eyeliner itself, the stencil is questionable. If you are confident with eyeliner and looking for your new staple then this is a perfect affordable buy, however, if you are purchasing this for the stencil we’d opt for another option. While the concept is strong, the wing stencil itself is not the most flattering on a majority of eye shapes. If you’re looking to learn how to do the perfect cat-eye, we recommend the Lancôme Grandiose Liner.

MadeBySunday The Big Fuzz Sponge (£8) Rating 5/5. The tool you never knew you needed. What is it meant to do? Offering a promise of 70% less product absorption over other available blenders, The

Big Fuzz is designed to save you money while still giving you a flawless complexion. What does it really do? The sponge itself is a great alternative to what is widely available on the market and if you haven’t already, we definitely recommend swapping your brushes for a sponge (thank us later). The slanted edge is a gamechanger for us and something we never knew we needed but now can’t get enough. Oh, and did I mention it’s all-natural and cruelty-free?

Establishments such as businesses, transport systems, restaurants, schools and community organizations are developing plans to resume normal or phased operations during the COVID-19 pandemic thus avoiding another closure of their business. These plans include an initial assessment to identify people who may be infectious to limit the spread of COVID-19 infections as they enter their establishment.

Business owners... You have the opportunity to safeguard your people and customers.

1.

Covid 19 - Antibody test Antibody tests look for evidence of the immune response to covid-19. The aim to answer the question: have I been exposed to COVID-19 and produced an immune response? If you want to see if you are carrying covid-19 now, you need to use an PCR Test. If a person is exposed to covid-19, their immune system will react in order to start clearing the virus. This involves producing antibodies to help clear the virus and evidence suggests most patients who recover from covid-19 produce them. There are different types of antibodies: IgG is the most common and it is the IgG to covid-19 that is detected by this test.

www.globalhealthuk.net 30

We offer the abbott test, which is highly accurate and approved by public health england.

2.

Covid 19 - PCR test The antigen test can be performed at home by the client. Antigen tests detect viral RNA. This requires taking a swab from the nose and throat and then analysing the specimen in the lab using the polymerase chain reaction (PCR). You may see these tests referred to as PCR tests. They aim to answer: do I carry coronavirus now? If you want to see if you have had covid-19 and developed antibodies, you should take an antibody test. The chances of detecting virus are highest in the days surrounding the start of symptoms. Ideally samples should be taken from symptomatic individuals between days 1-5 from symptom onset. However, there are many cases when virus can be detected later into the illness.

Minimise

your risk

of infection and protect your business A negative test result is also useful, to tell you that there is no presence of virus on that swab. But please bear in mind that this may be a false negative and isolation guidelines should still be followed. Many institutions use two swabs, 24 hours apart to confirm a negative case alongside other clinical information.

3.

Even those who eat healthily, drink moderately, exercise regularly and avoid stress, are not guaranteed a long and healthy life because everyone’s health is influenced by their genetic heritage. Hence, we propose the immunity package to boost your immunity. Immunity Package checks parameters that are important to evaluate body's readiness to fight infections and improve your immunity. Simple

Tip Fit T

With autumn chill in the air, people tend to avoid going outdoors and often skip the gym. But don't let cold weather trump your desire to stay fit this winter. Instead, arm yourself with some coping strategies. While everyone else is scrambling to stick to their New Year's resolutions, you will be coasting along, wondering why everyone is stressing about warmer weather and shorts season. Here are some simple fitness strategies to get you through the winter months:

1. 2. 32

Be sure to warm up indoors before an outdoor workout to get blood flowing to your muscles. Cold and stiff muscles are more prone to injury. Consider jumping jacks, a jog on the treadmill or cycling. Find a workout buddy for the winter season. Having a partner is great for accountability and even a little friendly competition.

ps to Stay This Autumn 3. 4. 5. 6.

Post progress pictures on social media or join an online fitness group or Facebook group where you will find people with like-minded goals ready and willing to offer encouragement. Try a new workout or find a fun class to join. Something new and different tends to create excitement and hold your interest longer than the same old workout you have been doing for months on end. Set a goal for the spring, like running a marathon, entering a fitness competition or taking a vacation. With a goal or event to work toward you'll be less likely to slack off. Buy new training gear. New clothes and/or sneakers can often be a great incentive to exercise because you will want to put your new gear to use.

7. 8. 9.

Plus, you can't wear the same tank tops and shorts you wore during your summer workouts, so make sure to layer up.

10.

Hire a personal trainer during the winter months. The investment alone may keep you motivated and it's a trainer's job to help push you safely through a workout even when you might not feel up to it.

Make it a point to get outside and get some sun. The sunshine and daylight will provide a boost in energy and the vitamin D from the sun will help regulate the immune system. Just make sure to put on sunscreen! Just because it is winter doesn't mean the harmful rays can't do damage to your skin.

11.

Take advantage of activities that can only be done in winter, like cross-country skiing, snow skiing and snowboarding.

12.

Keep a food journal seeing the calories add up on paper may be just the motivation you need.

Download an app for indoor workouts research for a variety of choices. There are so many free workouts online, and trying something new in the comfort of your own home might be a great way to discover a new fitness passion. Finally, if you have a dog, make a commitment to walk or run with him/her during the winter months. While the cold weather might not be your ideal, it's wonderful for them. The pavement is cooler on their paws and they generally love the feel of the brisk, cool air.

October without

With coronavirus cases spiking around the country, cities and towns, retailers are bracing themselves for what could be a substantially more subdued Halloween this year. Consistently at Halloween children dress up and go looking for sweet treats. With coronavirus cases spiking around following the Covid pandemic, rules and social distance still set up, people have raised up worries about Halloween. Another issue is that, despite the fact that trick or treating ordinarily happens outside, it is difficult to tell whether individuals opening their doors will be wearing a cover or have contacted the treats being offered without washing their hands.

There is likewise the opportunity that children knocking on doors of more established individuals could be conveying the infection, despite the fact that they don't have any side effects. Notwithstanding the fact that door to door request for treats could be restricted on the grounds that it tends to be hard to keep up legitimate social distancing. On the off chance that it proceeds children in England won't have the option to go in groups bigger than six, because of new guidelines. A few families may rather choose to observe Halloween at home, however, for most families welcoming companions round for gatherings will likewise be out, due to the 'rule of six'. Children under 12 in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland won't be influenced by the restriction on in excess of six individuals gathering, however the worries about social distance apply.

Parents

dedicate more than two working days* extra a month to school routine as a direct result of the Coronavirus pandemic. • Nearly half (47%) of parents feel overwhelmed due to managing new back-to-school routine • 35% of parents admit to being more anxious about returning to school than their child(ren) • A quarter of parents have no coping strategies in place to help look after their own mental health • Clinical director advocates for normalisation of anxiety. British parents spend the equivalent of more than two

working days* extra a month on the school routine due to the additional childcare management needed as a direct result of the pandemic. The research of 2,000 parents of children aged between four and 16, found that parents were spending on average 46-minutes extra a day (230 minutes a week) undertaking new tasks like staggering school drop-off and pick-up times, washing school uniform regularly and stepping in for lack of wraparound care as an immediate consequence of the pandemic. 61% of parents say they need up to an hour more per day to meet new childcare demands, 21% will now need to put aside at least another 60-minutes and a number of parents (6.2%) say they need to find over two-hours more.

The new research by VitaMinds, a free NHS mental health psychological talking therapy service provided by Vita Health Group, has revealed that almost half (47%) of parents admit to feeling overwhelmed by the additional childcare management and admin needed as a result of changes to life caused by Covid-19. The research also found that parents are feeling significantly more anxious (35%) than they feel their child(ren) have (19%) about returning to the classroom, many for the first time in six-months. Despite the additional pressure and weight of childcare causing a stark increase in parental anxiety, a quarter (25%) of parents say they have no coping strategies in place to support their own mental health. Upon evaluating the research results, Jane Muston, Clinical Director at Vita Health Group, emphasised, “Anxiety and feelings of overwhelm are completely normal, particularly during times of extreme uncertainty. As a parent, it’s important for you to be pragmatic about what you can control – especially as coronavirus threatens school closures - and learn to accept you can only do your best with the information that’s provided to you. “Practicing acceptance, recognising the additional input of hours needed from you as a parent as a new reality and turning one’s mind towards acceptance and compassion, could greatly improve your ability to navigate this difficult situation. The mental and physical benefits of children being back at school cannot be understated and, as a parent, you will need to ensure that you put this at the forefront of your mind when dealing with this additional overwhelm. Saying that however, we would stress that it is natural and understandable for you to struggle with the extra weight on your shoulders, and if overwhelm sets in, you must feel comfortable to talk about how you are feeling and take some time for yourself to deal with this in the right way.” The research, undertaken by one of the UK’s leading healthcare providers, comes as many parents have experienced an unprecedented 24-weeks juggling childcare, homeschooling and work. More than double the percentage of men (32%) than women (14%) say the school routine will take them more than 61-minutes extra a day and over half of men (51%) say they feel overwhelmed by the additional childcare management needed as a result of changes to daily life caused by Coronavirus.

However, it appears male respondents dedicate more time and resource to looking after their own mental health than female respondents. Nearly a quarter of men (24%) say they meditate of practice yoga (compared to 16% of women), 28% say they block out time for themselves (compared to 19% of women) and 20% of men say they seek therapy or speak to someone outside of the family (compared to 10% of women claim the same). Muston continues: “Work-life balance is a thing of the past. Now, the focus for you as a family is to create a work-home synergy that suits your individual needs and then, most importantly, communicate this back to your employers. The emphasis must be on both parties here to make this ‘new normal’ work. Taking the initiative to open up an honest and open dialogue with your employer, one where you share your true reality, could help create a flexible working package for you that reduces daily stress and anxiety. Ultimately, this will make you more productive throughout your working day”. Muston says: “We can see from the research that families are adapting to meet new childcare needs, with men dedicating longer hours. But let’s be clear, finding an additional two working days* a month to plug into childcare management in an already timeconsuming world, is no mean feat. If you are concerned about your mental health, please contact your GP in the first instance. In addition, any parents who are struggling with their mental health are encouraged to use a free NHS mental health psychological talking therapy service, provided by VitaMinds**.

How to Support your

Child’s Mental

According to Public Health England, around half of all lifetime mental health problems start by the mid-teens. Unfortunately the number of mental health disorders seen in children is on the rise.

Mentally Healthy Schools, the website launched by the Duchess of Cambridge in 2018, reports that one in ten children aged five to ten has an identifiable mental health condition. The move to secondary school sees the number rise to one in seven. As we celebrate World Mental Health Day on the 10th October, let’s look at ways you can support your child’s mental health.

Encourage healthy habits Embrace the power of nature for a real boost to mental health. Encourage your child to play sports or enjoy walks and cycle rides to keep them healthy in their body and brain. Particular types of depression have been linked to nutritional deficiencies. Cook healthy meals at home, keep your fruit bowl full and pack healthy snacks for them to have at school. Limiting screen-time and keeping a sensible bedtime will help them stay alert and well-rested.

Build their self-esteem Children respond well to praise, but only if it’s done right. Instead of a general ‘well-done,’ be specific about what they’ve achieved. Focus on

40

their strengths and avoid constantly praising them, or you’ll lose any impact. Rather than telling them what they can’t do, focus on their efforts to learn and help them overcome any barriers they face. Let them make their own choices and take healthy risks. It will build confidence and boost their self-esteem.

Seek help when you spot a problem If your child breaks their leg, you expect medical help to set the bone. The same is true with mental health. Don’t assume mental health needs will go away without intervention. Sadly, most children with mental health

Helly Douglas - Writer Helly is a teacher and content writer, specialising in education and parenting.

Health Needs concerns don’t get any form of treatment. Use your gut instinct. If you notice a dramatic change in your child’s mood, sleeping, eating habits or behaviour that lasts for several weeks, talk to their teacher or visit your GP. Don’t panic. Many issues are short term and will be easily overcome.

Look after your own mental health needs If you struggle with your mental health, your child is more likely to develop problems of their own. Don’t ignore signs that you might be anxious or depressed. Seek medical help if you’re struggling with sleep, feel down or have lost your appetite. Research shows that when parents receive support for mental health, children’s symptoms improve too.

Ulysses

WELLS ‘Can’t Take It Much Longer’ EP out on Du Monde Records

The arrival of ‘Can’t Take It Much Longer’ marks the opening of a coherent collection of EPs, channelling his soaring atmospheric guitars with distinctive gritty vocals; introspecting deeply into Wells’ mania and resultant crawl back to serenity. The release is also his first with Du Monde Records, having been signed by Woody – from Bastille – who owns the label after catching Wells’ irrepressible live performance whilst on the road together last year. Hailing from Banbury in Warwickshire, Wells spent the months locked away honing this new body of work in a shed. The first track of the EP ‘Fooled’ batters its way into the room swinging its fists and marking the arrival; boasting a killer bass line and a squalling, hairraising guitar solo. ‘You Walked Out’, meanwhile, walks a tightrope over electronic, hip hop and scuzzy punk as Wells spits out agonised, distorted vocals over a masterfully epic yet brutal soundscape.

Ulysses Wells said of the release;

Effectively the beginning of a “B-Side” to the EP, ‘Can’t Take It Much Longer’, the title track, gradually introduces us to a mollified style in Wells and builds into an explosion of emotion and previously unheard influences. ‘Drift’, the final track of the EP, is conversely stripped back, fully exposing Wells through the closeness of its delivery, and leaves the door a touch ajar for EP2.

I used lock down to pull unfinished tunes out of the fridge and rework and produce them, working via Skype with the band and producer/mixers. ‘Can't Take It Much Longer’ is the first song I have produced myself, with most of the tracking of the EP completed either in my sisters flat in West Ealing or in Liverpool with the fantastic Rich Turvey.”

“I've used 3 main themes to write these EPs, with ‘Can’t Take It Much Longer’ based on “contemplation”. For this first EP the songs stretch back 3 years and give contrast to what people have previously heard, to share a gentler side.

Movie

Review

Here we are again, another month, another review. This month we have decided that it’s going to be films. We have got two films that stood out to us this month as being our top picks from Netflix once again. Yes, we are just as eager as everyone else to get back in the cinema with a large popcorn and drink to watch the latest blockbusters releasing, but until then, we are back to good old Netflix. This month we have got two very different films to look at one being a light-hearted comedy and the other being darker more of a thriller approach. Let’s just get stuck into them.

1.

Peanut Butter Falcon (2019)

Directed by Tyler Nilson & Michael Schwartz

Let’s start off with the more light-hearted of the two films this month, ‘Peanut Butter Falcon’. 2019’s pull on your heartstrings, fan favourite. The story follows a young man with down syndrome called Zak (Zach Gottasgen) and his quest to fulfil his dream of becoming a pro wrestler and meeting his childhood hero “Salt Water Redneck’ who we see Zak watching on his old video tapes at the beginning of the film. Alongside this, the film also follows a young man called Tyler who, as we discover throughout the film through a series of flashbacks, lost his brother which turns out to be his fault. And yes, 44

2.

Tyler is played by everybody’s favourite childhood actor, Mr Even Stevens himself, Shia LaBeouf. His story follows him on the run from his outlaw past. This twinned with Zak’s runaway attempt from his nursing home makes for an amazing encounter as the two meet. Tyler takes Zak under his wing and becomes his mentor teaching him everything he needs for his independence. If you haven’t guessed already the story is a real heart warmer. It will definitely be enjoyed by everyone in the family. The bond that the film creates between the two boys that is so strong and sweet that you will be routing for them for the duration of the film. Using a main character with down syndrome it absolutely smashes Hollywood’s ideology and does it in such an amazing way. A great film and perfect for a Sunday afternoon curled up in front of the telly.

The Platform

Directed by Galder Gaztelu-Urrutia I’m going to start with a warning with this one that it is a little hard to watch in parts because of gore but don’t let that put you off off as it has a very interesting concept

behind it. Also, its originally Spanish so yes, it is dubbed but it’s dubbed very wel and you often don’t notice. Plus, it doesn’t make a difference look at Money Heist from last month’s review that’s dubbed from Spanish and that’s amazing too. Anyway, now that’s out of the way, back to the review. The Platform, a makeshift prison in Spain which consists of a very tall tower with a couple of hundred platforms within it. Each platform hosts two prisoners all the way down to the bottom. The basis of the film is that a banquet of food is presented at the top of the prison on floor 0 which is then lowered down stopping at each platform allowing the prisoners on each floor to consume the food. The more food that is eaten on the above floors the less food that is received by those on the lower platforms. As the film progresses, we follow Goreng, a volunteer in the tower who in return of a 6-month stint in the prison will receive a recognised university

3.

degree. Unknown to him what actually happens within the tower he soon discovers the gritty reality as he gets to know his creepy cell mate. Each month the prisoners change platform up or down, nobody knows, which results in Goreng being exposed to both the highs and lows of this experience, quite literally. This one will keep you guessing as you see the characters change both physically and mentally. It’s a real psychological one with a very exciting concept, one that we’ve never seen before. If you’re into something a little darker yet gripping, then this one is definitely for you. We really enjoyed it. Many people see it as more of a statement, a metaphor for the bourgeoisie and a literal food chain but we don’t want to get political here. It’s a great film and something different. Make sure you give it a go.

Keeping Our Eyes Peeled The Conjuring (2013) Directed by James Wan

Now yes, it’s a horror we know that horror films have a very niche audience in the film industry but as far as mainstream, large-scale, Hollywood horror films go, this one is up there. It is loosely based on real life events surrounding Ed and Lorraine Warren. Plus, it’s one of many in the series, so if you do like it, you don’t have to worry as there is plenty of material to watch after. It’s a personal favourite of mine and it brings that scary little doll Annabelle to the big screen. I’m not too sure if that’s a good thing or not, I’ll let you decide. The Conjuring hits our screens this October. Give it a try.

Are you unsigned and talented?

The Shed Session is an exciting new YouTube platform that was launched on the 5th January this year with the sole purpose of promoting unsigned and talented musicians nationally. www.theshedsession.com

The Shed Session 46

@theshedsession

Unsurprisingly The Shed is a (large) garden shed in Brentwood, Essex that has been converted into a recording studio and multimedia space. It boasts professional grade equipment to allow the recording and production of audio visual material.

music is not right for the channel.

As you might expect this happens via a live performance of original material where a band/artist get to strut their stuff in front of the camera and have it professionally recorded for YouTube.

From there it’s a matter of being selected based upon your diversity and talent which was mentioned earlier in the article. Once selected you’ll need to make the journey to Brentwood, Essex for your day in the studio.

Ralph Mullan, the founder of the Shed Session, owner of The Shed Studio and self-confessed music addict, has played and worked with unsigned bands for many years. He has wanted to turn a dream of owning a studio and his desire to help gigging unsigned talent to climb the super tough music ladder into a reality for many years. Ralph recognised the insatiable appetite of today’s social media platforms for content and saw The Shed Session going some way towards satisfying this must have for any aspiring talent. The Shed Session welcomes and encourages diversity and wants to showcase people from all walks of life, all ages and all styles. There is absolutely no reason for anyone to think that their

To get involved you’ll need to contact Ralph at The Shed via one of the platforms listed at the bottom of this article provide an appropriate link to your material and social media sites.

If selected it is worth noting that The Shed Session is free, YES FREE!! If you are not a performer or maybe you are not selected there is still some great music to be enjoyed on the channel so why not like and subscribe to the fortnightly releases?

A state-of-the-art

digital platform intends to revolutionise the way communities support their local state schools, bringing much needed support to teachers.

When the precocious son of the founders of LetsLocalise started at a reputable state school in Berkshire, he was shocked and more than a little disappointed by what he found. Despite the limitless energy and creativity of the teaching staff, he found the school to be in a shabby condition, its equipment often aged or broken and the opportunities to engage pupils in external trips and activities that might broaden their horizons to be limited at best and non-existent at worst. The conversations at home triggered by these observations led to an idea with the potential not just to transform the prospects of state schools; it also offered an opportunity to strengthen local communities, by bringing multiple people, organisations and businesses into close relationships with their local schools. The lightbulb moment for Gaurav and Divya Garg, based in Wokingham in Berkshire, came when surveys prompted by their son’s observations showed that in excess of 60% of people in a given community wanted actively to help their local schools. They just had no idea how to do so. What if this reservoir of goodwill could be tapped into and piped into local schools?

48

Given the background of the Gargs and friends and colleagues in innovation, technology and community activities, the solution emerged in the shape of a digital platform, LetsLocalise, that could highlight the demand in schools and connect it to ‘supply’ out in the community. A critical perception in the framing of the idea came in the realisation that support for schools needed to come in a variety of formats. Yes, financial support would be important but so too would be volunteer time, expertise, work experience – in fact, anything that would help pupils get a clearer window to the world beyond the core curriculum. The idea behind the concept is that state schools register on the platform and headteachers and their teaching teams identify the programmes and activities that they would most like to pursue but currently cannot, due to insufficient financial or human resource. A typical selection for a single school might be a campaign to raise funds for

basketball hoops, a request for help with painting and decorating, an appeal for volunteers to act as exam supervisors, an appeal to experts to talk about their chosen profession and a request for internships or work experience opportunities for pupils. Once a school has posted the details of these programmes on the site, individuals in the local community, local organisations and local businesses are approached and asked to register on the platform too. Those registering can then browse through the range of requests across a range of schools and choose how best they can help. Continue on page 50.

A critical stage in the development of these school-community connections is in finding ways of reaching beyond pupils’ parents and bringing in support and resources that would not normally find their way into schools. Reaching the very people without school-age children, who said they wanted actively to help but did not know how. LetsLocalise has managed to break down ways of supporting schools into neat categories, which can be easily navigated on the website. So, for example, there is Pledge a Penny, Pledge a Minute, Pledge a Resource, Working with Schools, Expert Time and Corporate Connect. No headteacher or teacher will ever have had access to a platform with the scope and range of LetsLocalise in their professional lives. It is a multi-sided platform that enables multiple participants to engage at the same time.

So, instead of Websites through which schools can simply share information with their pupils’ parents, LetsLocalise can bring individuals, organisations and businesses onto the platform simultaneously, creating multiple connections and offering scope for engagement between schools and would-be supporters in a wide range of relationships. The LetsLocalise story moved from the drawing board to the real world in November 2019, when the founders and the team of colleagues and supporters they had built up, launched a pilot across seven schools in Berkshire. In fact, the company had to cap the number of schools it first engaged with because virtually every headteacher to whom the idea was outlined wanted to participate. “Like all brilliant ideas, the LetsLocalise concept is rooted in simplicity. Headteachers can see that tapping into that reservoir of goodwill that we are convinced exists out there in every community is a ‘no brainer’. Why would a school not want to tap into the support networks that can be constructed from their local communities?” says co-founder, Gaurav Garg.

LetsLocalise is a service offered free of charge to all state schools.

Testimonials: Shirley Austin Headteacher at The Forest School, Winnersh, Berkshire "I would say it’s a great opportunity to link in with your community, to work with great people. It’s a unique opportunity because not many people step forward and give up their time like this company does, so I would say grab hold of the opportunity, publicise it lots, be patient and stick with it, and work hard with the team around you because they’re there to help you.”

Simon Cope Headteacher at Wildridings Primary School Bracknell, Berkshire “I think LetsLocalise is just such a fantastic project. It does take time to get it up and running – but once it is up and running, keep pushing. At the end of the day, the only people that are going to benefit are the children of the school so it’s definitely a worthwhile project. I would recommend it to anybody that’s looking to get involved with them. “For me, it’s a no-brainer to get involved with LetsLocalise and we’re very excited about the future.”

MG HS plug-in The new MG HS Plug-in SUV goes on sale in October with a great value entry price of £29,995 and adds a new dimension to MG’s electrified drivetrain line-up, building on the popularity and success of MG ZS EV. It becomes MG’s first model to feature a Plug-in Hybrid drivetrain, using the existing model’s 1.5-litre turbocharged engine working in tandem with a 90kW electric motor to give an EV-only range of 32 miles with zero tailpipe emissions – plenty enough for most commutes. Together the electric and petrol motors develop a combined power output of 258PS, giving the model a performance advantage too. It has the ability to accelerate swiftly from 0-60mph in 6.9 seconds. MG HS Plug-in also introduces an innovative new 10-speed transmission which works with both the petrol and electric motors to optimise power delivery and efficiency. Power from the petrol engine is channelled through a six-speed automatic gearbox, while the electric motor transfers power through a four-speed electronic drive unit. Together they combine to provide 10 electronically controlled gear ratios that always provide the optimal gear combination, keeping emissions as low and driver enjoyment and performance as high as possible.

Yet, despite these impressive power and performance figures, MG HS Plugin boasts very impressive economy figures and a low CO2 emissions figure of just 43g/km. In EV-only mode emissions are 0g per km and this gives a range of up to 32 miles. But in hybrid mode the range of the car is limitless, making it ideal for longer journeys and family holidays when you can put petrol in if needed and not fret about the electric range. Using a Type 2 fast charger, the MG HS Plug-in can be charged from zero to 100% in just three hours. One of the key features of MG HS Plugin is its high-tech driver assistance suite called MG Pilot, which is carried-over from the 5 star Euro NCAP rated petrol version, and comes as standard. MG Pilot includes a number of safety aids, including Autonomous Emergency Braking, Blind Spot Detection, Adaptive Cruise Control, Forward Collision Alert, Lane Change Assist and Rear Cross Traffic Alert. With rapid acceleration coupled with the MG Pilot suite, MG HS Plug-in revives MG’s tradition of “safety fast”. Two trim levels are available – Excite and Exclusive – both with high equipment levels. MG currently has a network of 112 dealers with further expansion planned before the end of 2020.

Half of women believe there should be more female entrepreneurs in the UK, but just a fifth have had the confidence to take the leap The all-female team behind the gin brand is offering training and funding to help budding female entrepreneurs turn their passions into businesses The all-female team behind BLOOM Gin is giving budding female entrepreneurs the chance to win a share of 25,000 GBP to fund their ‘Passion Project’, taking their passions in life and turning them into a business reality, in an effort to further increase the number of female-run businesses in the UK.

The initiative follows research from the gin brand, which polled 2,000 UK women aged 25 and over, and found that an overwhelming majority (84%) did not believe that women had yet achieved true equality in the workplace, with sixty-five percent (65%) stating that we need to see more women in senior management positions and fifty percent (50%) wanting to see more female entrepreneurs. The research also found that while nearly half (45%) of women had considered starting their own business, just under a fifth (18%) had gone on to do so, with sixty-percent (60%) admitting they had been unable to progress their ambitions. The main reasons cited for this included not having the funds to get going (55%), a lack of confidence (51%) and the need to juggle existing work and children (49%). In response to this, BLOOM Gin is launching a new initiative that aims to inspire, motivate and support budding female entrepreneurs, teaming up with some of the UK’s most inspiring female business leaders and owners to encourage the next generation of

female entrepreneurs to take their Passion Projects to the next level. Over the next month, these successful female entrepreneurs will share their own journeys, including the highs and lows they experienced along the way, through a content series hosted on BLOOM Gin’s Instagram page (@BLOOMGIN). Supporters of the campaign include: • Joyce & Raissa De Haas - Founders of tonic brand Double Dutch • Hilary Rowland – Founder of the fitness movement Boom Cycle • Steph Douglas – Founder of gifting website, Don’t Buy Her Flowers • Orlagh McCloskey and Henrietta Rix – Co-Founders of the global fashion label, Rixo • Eshita Kabra-Davies – Founder of the UK's first peer-to-peer fashion rental app, By Rotation • Lauren Dallas – Co-Founder and CEO of Future Females • Abi Oyepitan and Liha Okunniwa – Co-Founders of sustainable beauty brand, Liha Beauty

Mercedes Benson – DJ and Founder of Social Fixt, an organisation connecting black talent to jobs in creative industries

• Ria Hebden – Presenter and regular on ITV’s Lorraine, also founder of Wonder Women TV Despite it being the 21st century, the research revealed that women still perceive the biggest barriers to progression in their career to be related to childcare (65%) and maternity leave (61%). The cost of childcare (55%), the lack of female representation at a senior level (42%) and lack of opportunities for women in historically male-dominated areas (e.g. STEM) (36%) also featured strongly. It’s therefore no surprise that women feel like they need to stick together, with

the research revealing that ninety-six percent (96%) of women believe it is important to support other women. With the government pledging to increase the number of female entrepreneurs in Britain by 50% by 2030[2], the research indicates that more may need to be done in order to achieve this. When it comes to help and advice that women would like to receive around starting their own business, financial support came out on top in the research (45%), followed closely by help with a business plan (39%), advice on marketing (32%), access to ongoing business coaching (27%) and advice on networking (25%). In response to this, BLOOM Gin will also be partnering with Future Females, a global movement with 50,000 members, that exists to increase the number of and success of female entrepreneurs. Together they will launch 'Bloom in Business' - a skills workshop series to help female entrepreneurs to develop the key personal and technical skills needed to start and grow a thriving business. All resources will be free and you can sign up for them at www.bloomgin.com/ passion-projects. When it comes to the biggest motivators for women starting their own business, financial reward is not cited as a top reason, with the women polled placing a higher value on the following five benefits: • Ability to follow their passion (60%) • More flexibility when it comes to work (55%) • Better work/life balance (52%) • Ability to utilise core skills/strengths (48%) • Ability to be their own boss (45%) The research also found that for many women, Covid-19 lockdown has made them reflect and readjust their 58

As a result, a further 45% have started a new hobby or progressed with an existing hobby, with one in ten of these women (10%) turning it into a side business. When respondents were asked why they have not turned this side business into a fulltime business, the top reasons given were lack of time due to already having another full-time or part-time job (32%), a lack of confidence (30%) and a lack of financial resource (24%). This led BLOOM Gin to launch its Passion Projects competition, which is giving budding entrepreneurs the opportunity to win a share of 25,000 GBP in funding, which will enable them to dedicate time, money and resources to taking their Passion Project to the next level. To be in with a chance of winning, entrants must visit www.bloomgin.com/ passion-projects and follow the steps to submit their business proposal. Entries will open on 7th September 2020 and suitable candidates will have until midnight on 11th December 2020 to

submit their entries. Entrants must be aged 25 or over. Terms & conditions apply. Finalists will then be announced in January and will be invited to the grand finale, which will take place in February 2021. Here finalists will have the opportunity to meet the judging panel, including the Founders of Double Dutch, Boom Cycle and Social Fixt, before pitching their business proposal to the judges in front of a live audience. Elaine Maher, BLOOM Gin Brand Director, commented: “BLOOM Gin came about as a result of our Master Distiller’s passion for gin and her desire and determination to make a gin that even non-gin drinkers would appreciate; BLOOM has since gone on to become a much loved gin brand around the world, which just goes to show what you can do when you believe in yourself. With BLOOM Passion Projects, we’re aiming to inspire other women to go for it, just like Joanne did, and support them to achieve their potential. The women who are joining us on this initiative are truly inspirational and we’re all looking forward to helping the next generation of female entrepreneurs to bloom.” Visit www.bloomgin.com/passionprojects to find more information on the campaign, webinars and competition.

How to put the

back into socially distanced

As we adapt to what is becoming the new norm, it appears that we are all suffering from the loss of human interaction. As we adapt to what is becoming the new norm, it appears that we are all suffering from the loss of human interaction. Whether it is the friendly “hellos” from your favourite barista or the hours long catch up with your oldest friend, it is all too apparent how much we never truly appreciated the little things before this pandemic. However, living through 2020 and all its trials and tribulations has booted us out of the ruts that we were way too comfortable to stay confined in. I’m here to tell you that adapting to the new norm doesn’t have to be a struggle, not when there are so many ways to be social able responsibly.

1.

2.

What makes things more fun? When they’re miniature! Suitable for anything from an intimate date to a larger group, mini golf is truly an all-rounder. There is plenty of courses both near and far that are dying for you to test your golfing skills.

4.

Staycation

Picnic An obvious and weather permitting one, a picnic is a great way to get together whilst still remaining socially distant. Rethink everything you know about picnics and instead allow your mind to wander across all of the great beauty spots we never used to consider as a great day out. From country parks, to castles and even the national forest, why not expand your horizon with a picnic with an incredible view.

Mini golf

We are all familiar with the heavenly takeaway cups from our favourite coffee shops on our morning commute - but have you ever considered having a coffee to go catching up with a friend? Not only are you remaining socially distanced, but you are also helping out businesses too. Get a coffee to go with your pal and unearth parts of the town you normally wouldn’t have time to whilst you walk and catch up.

With planes firmly staying on the runway, why not make 2020 the year you rediscover Britain? By avoiding unnecessary air travel, you are simultaneously staying safe and promoting the

local economy of one of the many British seaside towns. From Cornwall to the Scottish Highlands (and everything inbetween) there will be something to suit every family.

6.

Drive-in Cinemas In a world that is dominated with the worries of the future, why not relax in a retro vision of the past? Seeing the opportunity in the usual cinemas closing their doors, the drive-in cinema industry has exploded with sites showing both new blockbusters and comfort classics. As the name suggests by staying in your own vehicle with your social bubble you can stay safe whilst still enjoying a night out of the house. With some both near and far, there will certainly be one with the right showing for you. These are just some example on how you can take back control and make the most out of 2020. Why not send in a selfie or two of you trying these out!

Law Firm Lead the Way with Domestic Abuse Awareness Champion Status

Basingstoke’s leading law firm, Lamb Brooks recently took part in a useful and thought-provoking training session held by Hampshire charity, The YOU Trust. The Dragonfly Project (associated with The YOU Trust) seeks to identify victims of domestic violence and abuse and support those who are isolated within their own communities. The project is looking to develop further in Hampshire, after being established in Dorset for some time, so that they can offer their valuable services to those in need across the region. Lamb Brooks are the first law firm in North Hampshire to complete the training and are delighted to be involved in the project so as a Family Law specialist they can raise awareness of such an important issue and also be aware of how to spot the warning signs when their own clients could be in need of help. Commenting on the Champion Status, Rob Parker, Partner and Head of the Family Law Team commented: “Myself and the family team are pleased to be involved in such a crucial project that is developing in our region. Having seen in the media the growing concerns about domestic violence, particularly over the lockdown period, our department were keen to learn more about the issue and see where we, as an established specialist in Family Law, 62

can assist men, women and children who experience this abuse”. Calls to the National Domestic Abuse Helpline were up 80% in June according to the charity Refuge. 1 in 4 women and 1 in 6 men are affected by domestic abuse in their lifetimes, with 2 women a week sadly being killed by their perpetrators and a further 3 women a week taking their own lives. From taking part in the course, the Family Law Team learned many more shocking statistics about domestic abuse which includes controlling, coercive and threatening behaviour as well as stalking and physical violence. They also spent time looking at the laws that have been introduced over the years and the warning indicators that someone in an abusive relationship may show. The Family Law Team are wellversed in dealing with sensitive and often upsetting family situations, however the course was truly grounding and eye-opening when it comes to hearing about the daily struggles that victims of domestic abuse suffer, and with the right support, aim to manage or escape from.

Lesley Morton, Course Facilitator and ICEP DVA Worker at The YOU Trust commented: “We are really pleased to work with progressive law firms such as Lamb Brooks. It is great to have some new Champions on board with the Dragonfly Project and hold training courses with businesses who are so dedicated and keen to give back to their local communities.” If you are willing to see how you can help support the project or are looking for advice about Family Law or Domestic Violence Support for you / on behalf of someone you know please find some useful telephone numbers and website below.
