Your Local Buzz Making a difference Last year local mum, Yvie Creasey, made a decision to change her life and make a change for a local charity. Having not exercised in over 10 years she decided to enter The London Marathon. She contacted the Fair Close Centre and just knew straight away that she wanted to run for them. They provide an amazing friendly place for senior citizens to go and relax and have a home cooked meal and some good company here in Newbury.
people will support her to help this wonderful charity at the heart of the local community.
Despite being a busy person, Yvie had never been a keen exerciser; she was happier watching a movie than exercising in the evening after a busy day with the children. But in July all that changed and she started the NHS couch to 5k (which she thoroughly recommends!) She built up the running and says "the training so far has been a mixture of loving it and having to drag herself out." She is sure the marathon will be one of the toughest days of her life but she wants to make a difference where she can and hopes You can donate at www.virginmoneygiving.com/fairclose (any amount is so very greatly received) and if anyone with elderly relatives would like to know more about the Fair Close Centre please do find out more at www.fairclosecentre.org Local Buzz is a proud sponsor of Yvie, a previous employee of the company.

Children’s charity fundraising for new teaching space
Ufton is an innovative children’s charity based in a Tudor manor house, log cabins and 36 acres of woodland near Reading. We work in two main areas of education; Ufton History and Ufton Adventure. At Ufton Adventure we help children who are under-achieving at school. They often have very low self-esteem and they do not feel empowered. The purpose of these programmes is to raise aspiration, attainment and confidence through outdoor learning in our woodland. Through repeated visits, children develop skills to meet the challenges they face at home and in school, returning as more successful learners. In 2018, we began regular Day Visits for small groups of children at risk of exclusion, and also “work-ready” days for children with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities. This growth means that we are fundraising to build a new teaching space: The Ufton Longhouse, to be used for workshops, reflection sessions, wet weather and evenings. We hope to complete our fundraising and start building this amazing space in 2019. To donate or to help us fundraise please contact fundraising@uftoncourt.co.uk
Stone Age Thatcham Evidence of people in the Thatcham area comes in the form of a number of Paleolithic (Old Stone Age) hand axes dating to over 12,000 years ago. By the Mesolithic (Middle Stone Age) a village of light temporary shelters was erected on a pine covered gravel bluff near the modern sewage works on Lower Way. The bluff was bordered on one aide by a lake. The villagers, who were semi nomadic hunters and fishers, occupied the site periodically for centuries. The settlement was discovered by workmen in 1920 and excavated a year 6
later by Messrs. Peake and Crawford. Further traces of occupation were discovered in 1957 by Local amateur archaeologists, Messrs. Barber, Collins and Sheridan, and an excavation, directed by Mr. John Wymer. The Mesolithic gave way to the Neolithic (New Stone Age). During this period and certainly by the end, around 2400BC, the people had started to settle and become farmers. Axes and bones from this period have been unearthed in the late nineteenth century near Banks’s Farm (Colthrop) and south of the canal at Chamberhouse Farm.

Help for rough sleepers
Building New Homes
Every huddled figure sleeping in a doorway or shopfront is a scandal in this day and age and presents each of us with the challenge of what we can do to help. Did you know that our Council has expanded its SWEP (Severe Weather Emergency Protocol) provision to cover not only the statutory requirement for nights when the temperature is forecast to fall below 3°C but every night between November and March? This means that everyone with a local connection can find a warm place to stay every night this winter. There have also been important steps on healthcare for rough sleepers, making access easier to GP surgeries and with weekly drop-in sessions at Swanswell in Newbury, thanks to the NHS funded Health Outreach Liaison Team expanding its work to cover West Berkshire.
More. Better. Faster. The words I’ll be repeating over and over again in 2019. Why? When I got the Housing Minister job, the PM set me one task – to build 300,000 new homes a year by the mid-2020s. We’re working with industry to ramp up house building, delivering different types of homes for everyone – including hundreds of thousands of affordable and social homes in which we’re investing £9bn. Boosting supply will keep rents low and allow young people onto the housing ladder. We’re making sure they’re better designed and suited to their local environments too. Neighbourhood Plans are a big part of this – they give local people a say in shaping their area for example choosing where to build, influencing what new buildings should look like and identifying the green spaces to be protected. As we build more, we must put the right infrastructure in place too. Here, solid progress is being made on schemes such as Manydown in Basingstoke and Augusta in Andover where we’re building thousands of homes as well as schools, community facilities and beautiful green spaces.
Professional Help and Advice for Community and Charity Groups in Basingstoke and Deane BVA are currently working in partnership with the Borough Council on a variety of projects including the community plans for various local areas. Also, they are leading the local ‘Older Persons Partnership’. Discussions have commenced with local Community Associations plus Voluntary Groups and will progress throughout 2019. Additionally, BVA are part of the Health & Well-Being partnership encouraging our community to be more active and socially connected.

For over 50 years the British Heart Foundation has pioneered research that’s transformed the lives of people living with heart and circulatory diseases.
British Heart Foundation Life-saving Research
Our work has been central to the discoveries of vital treatments that are helping to beat heartbreak forever. But so many people still need our help. From babies born with life-threatening heart problems to the many mums, dads and grandparents who survive a heart attack and endure the daily battles of heart failure. Every pound raised, minute of your time and donation to our shops will help make a difference to people’s lives. Each year, British Heart Foundation (BHF) shops raise around £30 million to help the BHF fund life-saving research into all heart diseases, stroke, vascular dementia and diabetes. The BHF now has around 750 shops across England, Scotland and Wales including 550 Standard shops and over 180 Home stores, selling up to 85,000 items every day. The BHF Newbury shop stocks a huge range of good quality and affordable second-hand items such as clothing, shoes, bags, toys, belts, as well as books, music and films. All money raised from the sales of these items goes towards life-saving research into treatments for heart and circulatory diseases. The BHF has around 17,000 volunteer opportunities in its shops. Nearly 90 per cent of its employed retail positions are filled by those who have previously
volunteered for the BHF. There is no doubt that volunteers are the beating heart of BHF shops across the country, but busy stores can always do with an extra hand. The Newbury store would love to hear from you if you are interested in kickstarting a career in retail or perhaps just gaining some valuable work experience – from serving customers to organising seasonal displays or sorting stock, your time could help us to beat heartbreak forever for families across the UK. As well as learning new skills, volunteering is a great way to increase your own wellbeing but also meet new people, while supporting the local community and helping us to raise funds for pioneering research – that could one day save the life of a loved one.
If you can’t give the gift of time, the Newbury shop is also always looking for donations, from quality clothing, accessories and shoes, so if you are having a January clear-out please feel free to swing by the store or take advantage of our free collections service. Margaret Richardson, Area Manager for the British Heart Foundation commented: “Each item sold in the store will help the BHF fund life-saving heart research, so if you have not yet visited the Newbury shop please do come by to see what great bargains are on offer. “We are always after good quality donations so if you are having a clear out in the next few weeks, we would love to receive any unwanted clothing and accessories. Donating couldn’t be easier with our free collections service and it’s a great way to cut down on waste. “If you would rather give the gift of time, we are always in need of volunteers who can spare a couple of hours a week, so please get in touch if you are interested.”
The BHF Newbury shop is located at 5 Mansion House Street. For more information about BHF’s free collection service or volunteering opportunities please call the shop on 01635 30611 or visit www.bhf.org.uk/shop 13
What to wear? It is etiquette for the mother of the bride to have the first choice of colour and style for her outfit. However It is also just as important for the mother of the groom to feel confident that she looks her best too. Both need to feel relaxed and happy with their ensemble. So it is often a good idea and polite for them to have a chat about what they’d ideally like to wear and they then should choose an outfit that they really like and not be told what to wear by the bride or anyone else! The mother of the bride is often the last down the aisle before the bride’s entrance. She should therefore think about the appearance of the back of her outfit as that could be the first impression anyone sees of her. It is often a misconception that hat, bag and shoes need to match. They don’t. Sometimes having a bag and matching shoes works well or a hat can match the hand bag, the shoes then being less dominant blend with the hemline. It is all a question of creating a pleasing balance.
Regarding floral corsages. Some brides are under the misapprehension that they choose the colour of these , when in fact the flowers should complement the clothes being worn. So the mothers should always be asked what they would like. Hats & headwear should be worn until at least after speeches and then only be removed after that if the bride’s mother does so. That doesn’t mean that everyone needs to take them off at that point, it just signifies permission to do so if preferred. For this reason it is obviously essential to feel comfortable in the choice of headwear.
On the day, the Best Man briefs the ushers, oversee the buttonholes and make sure all the guests have got home safely at the end of the evening.
When are the speeches and what order should they go? Traditionally, the speeches are made as coffee is served and the bride’s father speaks first, followed by the groom and best man. However, you could have the speeches before the meal so that the speakers can relax and enjoy their food or hold them later when your evening guests are also present. Although it’s not traditional, it’s becoming more common for brides to say a few words. But don’t launch into an over-emotional ramble. If in doubt, keep it simple, and go first if you’re nervous, or last for maximum impact.

Wedding Etiquette
Planning a wedding can be difficult with emotions running high. So understanding who does what and when will help relieve some of the stress. Who pays for the wedding? Traditionally, the bride’s parents paid for most of the wedding, but many couples fund their big day themselves these days or split the cost between both families. Though no one really likes to bring up the subject, it’s important to speak to both sets of parents and find out what – if anything – they’d like to contribute early on.
Where do I start with my guest list?
4. People you recently met, who may be part of your life but haven’t been around long, such as new work colleagues. 5. Friends you haven’t seen in a long time and don’t keep in contact with, and family members that you don’t have a relationship with. Now your priorities should be clear: 1s and 2s should get an invitation to the whole event; 3s could come to the evening do; and 4s shouldn’t be invited at all – there are reasons you don’t keep in touch, so be true to yourself.
Who do we invite if we’re getting married abroad? Most couples stick to close family and friends only and then hold a postwedding party when they get back. If you are marrying in Europe and the costs involved aren’t such an issue as for, say, a Caribbean or Mauritius wedding, then give your friends the option of coming along but make it very clear that you won’t be offended if they cannot join you.
1. Draw up a list of everyone you’d like to invite in an ideal world and sort them into four categories. 2. People who must be invited at all costs – parents, siblings, best friends. 3. Friends that you still see or keep in contact with regularly – work colleagues (if you have been there a while) and long-term mates from university and football etc.

Venice It is, without doubt, one of the most famous and cities in the world. Venice is laced across 117 mini-islands, which sit within the shallow waters of the Venetian Lagoon. Venice’s most famous church is the subject of a million photographs, the architectural star of the Piazza San Marco. And a church dedicated to St Mark has occupied this spot since 828 - even if the present building was not completed until 1092. Also known as a famous place for sweethearts, lovers, artists and poets, Venice is a magical city, which stretches across numerous small islands. It is often refered to as the city of "gondole", which are the means of transportation used to cross the numerous canals passing through the city.

Maldives The Maldives, a tropical paradise of pristine beaches, are an archipelago of 1,192 coral islands grouped into 26 coral atolls in the Indian Ocean. The Maldives is renowned for its incredible diving opportunities. The crystal clear water and shallow lagoons are
perfect for snorkelling, while the reef walls offer a kaleidoscope of sea life for more experienced divers. There is an amazing diversity of sea life, with corals and over 2000 species of fish, ranging from reef fish and reef sharks to moray eels, rays and whale sharks. The land features lush tropical vegetation with abundant local coconut palms. With an average ground level of 1.5m above sea level, the Maldives is by far the lowest country on earth and as such has a very fragile ecosystem.

Originating as a Western Christian feast day honoring one or two early saints named Valentinus, Valentine's Day is recognized as a significant cultural, religious, and commercial celebration of romance and romantic love in many regions around the world.
Valentine's
Day
Valentine's Day, also called Feast of Saint Valentine, is celebrated annually on
February 14.
Legend It is suggested that Saint Valentine performed clandestine Christian weddings for soldiers who were forbidden to marry. The Roman Emperor Claudius II supposedly forbade this in order to grow his army, believing that married men did not make for good soldiers. According to legend, in order "to remind these men of their vows and God’s love, Saint Valentine is said to have cut hearts from parchment", giving them to these soldiers and persecuted Christians, a possible origin of the widespread use of hearts on St. Valentine's Day. Saint Valentine supposedly wore a purple amethyst ring, customarily worn on the hands of Christian bishops with an image of Cupid engraved in it, a recognizable symbol associated with love that was legal under the
Roman Empire. Roman soldiers would recognize the ring and ask him to perform marriage for them. Probably due to the association with Saint Valentine, amethyst has become the birthstone of February, which is thought to attract love.

Around the world
In 1797, a British publisher issued The Young Man's Valentine Writer, which contained scores of suggested sentimental verses for the young lover unable to compose his own. Printers had already begun producing a limited number of cards with verses and sketches, called "mechanical valentines." Paper Valentines became so popular in England in the early 19th century that they were assembled in factories. Fancy Valentines were made with real lace and ribbons, with paper lace introduced in the mid-19th
In Finland Valentine's Day is called ystävänpäivä which translates into "Friend's Day". As the name indicates, this day is more about remembering friends. In Japan, the romantic "date night" associated to Valentine's Day is celebrated on Christmas Eve. In Slovenia, Saint Valentine or Zdravko was one of the saints of spring, the saint of good health and the patron of beekeepers and pilgrims. A proverb says that "Saint Valentine brings the keys of roots". Plants and flowers start to grow on this day. It has been celebrated as the day when the first work in the vineyards and in the fields commences.

Delicious recipes from The How Not to Die Cookbook by Dr. Michael Greger with Gene Stone, recipes by Robin Robertson
Black Bean Burgers Makes: 4 Servings . Difficulty: Easy
There can never be enough ways to get beans into your daily meals. This is one of the best. Serve on toasted 100% wholegrain bread with all the fixings. These burgers freeze well, so consider doubling the recipe so you’ll have them ready for just-thaw-and-indulge moments. INGREDIENTS 1 cup old-fashioned rolled oats 1/2 cup walnut pieces 1 ¼inch piece fresh turmeric, grated (or ¼ teaspoon ground) 1/2 cup chopped red onion 1/3 cup chopped mushrooms 1½ cups cooked or 1 15-ounce BPA-free can or Tetra Pak salt-free black beans, well rinsed and drained 2 tablespoons tahini or almond butter 1 tablespoon ground flaxseeds 1 tablespoon nutritional yeast & 1 tablespoon chopped fresh parsley 2 teaspoons white miso paste 1 teaspoon onion powder & 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
1/2 teaspoon smoked paprika 1 teaspoon savory spice blend (optional, page 4 of recipe book) METHOD
Pulse the oats, walnuts, and turmeric in a food processor until they are finely ground. Add the onion, mushrooms, beans, tahini, and flaxseeds and pulse until well combined. Add the remaining ingredients and pulse to mix well. Pinch some of the mixture between your thumb and index finger to test whether it holds together. If the mixture is too wet, add more oats. If the mixture is too dry, add a little water, one tablespoon at a time. Transfer the mixture to a work surface and divide into four equal portions. Shape each into a patty about ½-inch thick and transfer to a plate. Refrigerate for 30 minutes. Preheat the oven to 375ºF. Line a baking sheet with a silicone mat or parchment paper and arrange the burgers on it. Bake until hot and lightly browned, turning once, about 25 minutes, serve hot.
Garden View Jobs for February
This month there are signs of the approaching spring, with bulbs appearing and wildlife waking up as light levels and temperatures increase. Is spring around the corner? Wrap up warm and take a flask into the garden this month. Prune hardy evergreen hedges and renovate overgrown deciduous hedges.
Prune winter-flowering shrubs that have finished flowering.
Net fruit and vegetable crops to keep the birds off.
30
Prepare vegetable seed beds, and
sow some vegetables under cover.
Cut back deciduous grasses left uncut over the winter, remove dead grass from evergreen grasses.
Cut back the old foliage from
ornamental grasses before growth begins - clip them to within a few centimetres of the ground.
Protect blossom on apricots, nectarines and peaches.
Divide bulbs such as snowdrops, and plant those that need planting 'in the green'
Dr. Michael Greger M.D. FACLM
How not to die from Heart Disease The most likely reason most of our loved ones will die is heart disease. Atherosclerosis, or hardening of the arteries, begins in childhood. Based on an autopsy series of accident victims, most children raised on the Standard American Diet already have fatty streaks building up in their arteries by age ten. These can then turn into atherosclerotic plaques in our 20s, get worse in our 30s, and then can start killing us off. In our heart, it's called a heart attack and in our brain, it can manifest as a stroke. Is it possible to prevent the hardening of our arteries? Researchers took people with heart disease and put them on the kind of plant-based diet followed by populations who did not get epidemic heart disease. Their hope was that it might slow down or maybe even
stop the disease. Instead, something miraculous happened: The disease actually started to reverse. As soon as patients stopped eating artery-clogging diets, their bodies were able to dissolve away some of the plaque, opening up arteries without drugs or surgery. This suggests their bodies wanted to heal all along but just were never given the chance. An improvement in blood flow to the heart muscle itself was after only three weeks of eating healthfully. Sometimes, given the right conditions, the body can heal itself. For example, if you accidentally whack your shin really
hard on a coffee table, it can get all red, hot, painful, swollen, and inflamed, but it’ll heal naturally if you just stand back and let your body work its magic. But what if you kept whacking your shin in the same place, day after day - in fact three times a day (breakfast, lunch, and dinner) - it would never heal! All you had to do all along, though, was just stand back and let your body’s natural healing processes to bring you back towards health. Yes, you could choose moderation and hit yourself with a smaller hammer, but why beat yourself up at all? We’ve known about this for decades. Take the case of Mr. F.W., covered in a 1977 case series in the American Heart Journal. He had such bad heart disease he couldn’t even make it to the mailbox without suffering crushing angina. But he started eating healthier and a few months later he was climbing mountains without pain.
Local Buzz is delighted to welcome Dr. Michael Greger, a physician, author and professional speaker on public health issues to share his blogs in every issue.
Plant-based diets can sometimes work better than drugs and surgery because we are treating the actual underlying cause of the disease.
He focuses on the best available balance of evidence from the peer-reviewed scientific literature.

Delicious! Lent – the 40 days leading up to Easter – was traditionally a time of fasting and on Shrove Tuesday, Anglo-Saxon Christians went to confession and were “shriven” (absolved from their sins). A bell would be rung to call people to confession.
Pancake Day, or Shrove Tuesday, is the traditional feast day before the start of Lent on Ash Wednesday.
Shrove Tuesday always falls 47 days before Easter Sunday, so the date varies from year to year and falls between February 3 and March 9. This year it is Tuesday 5th March. Shrove Tuesday was the last opportunity to use up eggs and fats before embarking on the Lenten fast and pancakes are the perfect way of using up these ingredients. The pancake has a very long history and featured in cookery books as far back as 1439. The tradition of tossing or flipping them is almost as old: “And every man and maide doe take their turne, And tosse their Pancakes up for feare they burne.” (Pasquil’s Palin, 1619). Pancake races form an important part of the Shrove Tuesday celebrations – an opportunity for large numbers of people, often in fancy dress, to race down streets tossing pancakes. The most famous pancake race takes place at Olney in Buckinghamshire. According to tradition, in 1445 a woman of Olney heard the shriving bell while she was making pancakes and ran to
the church in her apron, still clutching her frying pan. The Olney pancake race is now world famous. Competitors have to be local housewives and they must wear an apron and a hat or scarf. Each contestant has a frying pan containing a hot pancake. She must toss it three times during the race. The first woman to complete the course and arrive at the church, serve her pancake to the bellringer and be kissed by him, is the winner.
The ingredients for pancakes can be seen to symbolise four points of significance at this time of year: EGGS . Creation FLOUR . The staff of life SALT . Wholesomeness MILK . Purity
This year Pancake Day is 5th March 35

If you are, make sure you don’t just put a ring on their finger – give consideration to a prenuptial agreement.
That is the advice of solicitor Hayley Eachus, who is a member of the Family Law team at Phillips Solicitors. She says rather than being regarded as something unromantic and mercenary, prenups should be considered by anyone contemplating marriage. Marriage is about love and sharing the rest of your lives together, but in the eyes of the law, it is a contract between two people and it deals with the financial consequences of the marriage ending. A prenup will set out how your property will be divided should the marriage fail. To find out more about prenuptial agreements or if you would help with any other personal matter call Hayley Eachus on 01256 854633 or email hayley.eachus@phillips-law.co.uk
