Events CALENDAR Rope for Hope Fundraiser
30
Fandango and Pow Wow The annual Fandango and Pow Wow, hosted by the Ely Shoshone Tribe, will be July 30th – Aug. 1st. ALL ARE WELCOME to experience this rich cultural and communal event located at 250 Heritage Drive in Ely. Expect a yearly parade theme with drummers and traditional costumes and dances. The event will also include traditional hand game tournament, horseshoes, archery, Fun Run/Walk, corn hole tournament, vendors, artisans, kids activities, BBQ and Raffles.
24
The annual Rope for Hope event was put on hold last year due to Covid restriction. The event is back on schedule for 2021 and looking to be bigger and better than ever! Rope for Hope is held every year on the fourth Saturday of July at the Dufurrena Ranch in Denio, NV. This year it falls on July 24th, 2021. The day begins with a slick horn steer roping and a junior/senior roping. The roping is a family event and everyone is encouraged to enter! Kids games are held in the meadow and a concession stand is stocked with traditional basque chorizos, cold drinks and more. An amazing collection of silent auction items from local artisans, craftsmen and merchants is open throughout the day. The Oregon Old Time Fiddlers play for hours and there are plenty of seats in the shade to visit with friends and neighbors. After a fun day in the sun, a complete steak dinner is served in the meadow. The Dufurrena brothers are well known for their signature barbecued steaks. All of the money, raised on the day of the event, is given to local ranching families battling cancer. The goal is that with these funds, and the backing of the Rope for Hope community, it can be of some assistance and in the end create hope. Please join us for a day of good food and great company! For more information please joining the Facebook group “Rope for Hope”, visit the website at www.dufurrenaranchropeforhope.com or text or call (775) 941-0217 or (775)722-8720

Photos wanted Submit photos for a chance to have it featured as the cover art for upcoming issues! This month’s photos are courtesy of Charm Jensen, Jordan Ashley and Jacklyn Orr
Inside Northern Nevada magazine wants to feature local photos on the cover. The publisher of INN, Winnemucca Publishing, is soliciting photos from local photographers in the tricounty area; the winners for each month will have their photos featured as the cover art for issues from May through October with full credit. Since the photos must be printed in a larger format, the quality is crucial; photos taken with a cell phone are typically OK unless the user zoomed in through the phone, which significantly degrades quality. Photographers who wish to submit photos are asked to abide by the following parameters: • Do not edit, resize, crop or enlarge the photo; • Send full resolution. The photo must be at least 300dpi. This means photos copied or saved directly through social media or a website will not work (they are typically 72 dpi) as they will be too pixelated when resized for print; • Do not zoom in too much on the subject. We are able to utilize “dead space” when resizing for print; • Photos should clearly feature the elements of that month’s theme By submitting, potential winners agree the 4 INSIDE NORTHERN NEVADA | JULY 2021
photos that are chosen become the property of Winnemucca Publishing and may be used in future publications. INN is distributed throughout the I-80 corridor and features light-hearted stories that go with each month’s theme, as well as upcoming events, recipes, crafts and ideas to make summer 2021 the best it can be! We want our readers to have fun with this project! This might mean taking a photo of your kids hanging haphazardly out of the windows of your RV (while parked, of course) or cooking a meal outside in a Dutch oven together (August’s issue). Be creative and send your photos to inn@ winnemuccapublishing.net with the name of the month you’re submitting for in the subject line. Oh, and a pro-tip: we prefer people in the photos! We will respond to the winners as we go. The deadline for submissions is the 10th of every month for the following month’s issue. So if you are submitting for May, you must have your photos in by April 10. The photos do not necessarily have to be current, but they have to be of high enough quality to enlarge them for the front cover, so scanned photos will not work.

Start with conversation
By Samantha Andersen
Sometimes family conversations need a boost. Sometimes it is just hard to think of what to talk about after spending all day together. The best way to get conversations going is to ask questions. That’s why conversation questions/cards are so helpful! Bring out the questions for dinner-time conversations or something to do on road trips. They don’t have to be complicated, and you can pick and choose topics for the whole family. Ask the questions; even if you think you know the answers, you might be surprised. Also, adding “Why?” to any question helps an easier topic become a deeper conversation. Our family keeps a box of conversation starters in the car and at the table. Asking each other questions is especially great for families with kids. Taking turns asking and answering questions can help teach children how to take turns, listen, reflect on themselves, and even help boost confidence. The Family Dinner Project even suggests that dinner-time conversation increases children’s vocabularies and literacy. I like to mix some of the simple questions like, “What’s your favorite color?” with some questions that help ingrain some of our family values without having to do an entire lesson i.e., “What’s is one way you helped another person today?” Find some conversation starters below. You can also visit thefamilydinnerproject. org and pick some ideas from their conversation tab. Write them on cards, popsicle sticks, or read from a page. Do whatever works for you and your family, and enjoy your conversations!
Conversation Starters
If you could have any superpower, which would you choose? What is one way you helped another person today? What are the qualities that make you a good friend? What is the nicest thing a friend has ever done for you? What is your favorite family tradition? What is one thing you are grateful for today? What is one thing you could have done better today? What is your least favorite chore? What is something you want to learn how to do and why? What do you want to be when you grow up? What makes you feel loved? Name three things that are fun for you? What are the qualities of a good friend? What is one thing you can do this week to take care of yourself? What can you give or do for someone that doesn’t cost any money?

Get out on the water
Some of the best experiences as a family can be found away from electronics, away from home, and on the water. Rent a boat, take the kayaks out or rent those too, jump in, have a picnic by the water, go fishing whatever it is there is something peaceful and relaxing about spending time on the water with family. Despite living in the desert you’d be surprised how many opportunities there are to play at or around the water. All you need is the will to do a little driving, a well-stocked picnic cooler, maybe a tent, and the urge for some adventure.

Rye Patch Recreation Area
Boating enthusiasts have long known that the Rye Patch State Recreation Area has some of the best water in northern Nevada. Located on the Humboldt River 26 miles north of Lovelock, the reservoir covers 11,000 acres when full. The long and skinny body of water gives boaters plenty of room to zoom — plus quiet nooks for anglers to haul in their catch. Campers and picnickers are welcome, and will find nice areas to relax and enjoy the scenery.
South Fork Recreation Area The South Fork Recreation Area offers a wide variety of water activities for the whole family. South Fork Reservoir occupies what was once a wide river valley covered with fertile meadows that were used for grass cover, hay production and grazing pasture. With the filling of South Fork Reservoir in 1995, these meadows were flooded and what is left for visitors to see are older river terraces with gentle to steeply sloping bluffs.
Wild Horse State Recreation Area This state recreation area covers 120 acres on the northeast shore of Wild Horse Reservoir, and is located 67 miles north of Elko on Route 225. Park facilities include campgrounds, trails, boat launch and ranger station. Recreation includes camping, fishing, boating, picnicking and hunting. The park is open year round.

Family Game Night By Samantha Andersen
Take family game night up a notch with a minuteto-win-it relay contest. Game nights are some of the best things to do with family, but sometimes it can be hard to find a game that includes everyone especially if there are kids in the mix. Sometimes people just don’t want to sit and play a board game. Try setting up a minute-to-win-it relay course, splitting into teams, and watch the hilarity and fun begin. You can time which team completes each round the fastest or play relay style and the first team to have all their people complete the obstacle wins. Most of the games are simple for every age and ability, take very little setup, and involve items that most people already have laying around the house. Make sure you’ve got cameras ready. Below is a sample relay to try. Our most recent family reunion has proven it is a fun and not too hard course. Two teams of six (adults) completed the course in less than 30 minutes. If you want to switch it up or add more games a quick internet search for minute-to-win-it games will bring up tons of ideas.

Suck it up
Items needed — cups, skittles, straws How-to — Line up 5-10 skittles next to a cup, the person must use the straw to suck up the skittles and put them in the cup. Pretty straight forward to do and easy for most ages, just make sure to keep those skittles on the table! This can be made easier for the younger crowd by shortening the straw.
Balloon cups
Items needed — cups, balloons
How-to — Stack up to 4 cups, the players must blow the balloon up in the cup, lift the cup (no hands) and place it to the side in a line continuing until all of the cups are lined up.

Flip Cup
Items needed — the cups used for the Balloon cups game How-to — Pull the cups to the edge of the table and flip them using just your fingers. Once all the cups are flipped move onto the next event. This takes a surprising amount of concentration to get the cup to flip and land correctly. The younger crowd might need assistance or have them stack the cups in a triangle depending on their ability level.
Pong in cup
Items needed — cups and ping pong balls How-to — Line four cups up and one by one bounce a ping pong ball on the table and into the cup. Once all cups are filled move onto the next event. This game can be made easier by weighing the cups down with something (we used skittles). Be sure to have a partner handy to catch the stray ping pong balls otherwise you’ll have to shave some time off your score by chasing down your ping pong balls. That is, if you don’t have an abundance of ping pong balls to use.
Built in 1880, serves as a convention and cultural arts center with capacity for large groups.
Floor scoot obstacle course
Items needed — pillows or dish towels How-to — Set up obstacles and have the players boot scoot on a pillow to the next station or have them stand on the edge of dish towel holding the other end in their hands and have them shuffle walk to the next station keeping their feet on the towel. If playing outside this might be fun as a burlap sack/pillow case race.
Cookie face
Items needed — cookie (we used oreos and a face) How-to — Get the camera ready for this one. Players must tilt their heads up and put a cookie on their forehead. Next using only their face muscles move the cookie from their forehead to their mouth. No hands and if the cookie falls you have to start all over. This is definitely harder than it sounds and take some concentration. There is much debate on whether it is easier to do standing or sitting, but on thing is for sure, this event is the best for some goofy photos.

Family-Friendly Ideas for Summer Fun (Family Features) Warm, sunny days are the perfect setting for making family memories, but they’re also ideal opportunities to encourage kids to get creative and let their imaginations soar. These ideas for summertime activities encourage family interaction, and the more kids get to help plan and organize the details, the more engaged you can expect them to be.

spot under a big shady tree and spread out for an impromptu picnic. Be sure to bring along outdoor toys for a game of catch or lighten the load and create a nature scavenger hunt with different types of leaves, rocks and flowers for kids to discover. If they come across an unfamiliar plant or animal, snap a picture with your phone so you can do some research on it when you get home. Encourage the kids to draw or design a piece of art reflecting the things they saw.

Cool off with a fun and refreshing water fight with a few creative twists. First grab sponges, or water sponge balls, and a full bucket of water. The sponges are reusable so you can use them all summer long. Make it extra fun by organizing teams with kids against adults or everyone fending for themselves. Encourage kids to devise their own blockades and targets or adapt a classic game like baseball or dodgeball using water sponges in place of the usual balls. You could also do a sponge scavenger hunt to load up everyone’s buckets before the dousing begins.
Find the Animals
Visit your local Association of Zoos and Aquariums accredited zoo or aquarium and have your kids find as many animals as they can from the AZA SAFE: Saving Animals From Extinction species list. It’s a good opportunity to talk about the concept of extinction and why these animals are on the list. Follow up the visit with an activity that reinforces how everyone has a role in conservation and look for ways to help protect each family member’s favorite animal.
Make Oven S’mores
On a rainy night (or any night) make a s’more by putting it in the oven. They turn out just as melty and gooey as the campfire version but with easier prep and cleanup. This is a tasty way to get those creative juices flowing. Experiment with different candies, such as peanut butter cups in place of chocolate bars. Or add different ingredients and have other family members guess the flavors.
Recycled Animal Crafts
Combining a creative activity with an important message such as conservation can help kids grasp big concepts about keeping animals and the earth safe and happy. Use recycled materials such as cardstock and “junk” from the recycling bin as well as hot glue and colored pends or pencils to have your kids create an art project featuring a favorite animal or one they’ve seen at a park or zoo. Simply piece items together to look like the animal as well as its habitat like trees, grass or the dessert. Then hot glue the items to the cardboard base and use pens or pencils to add details.
