PHOTOS WANTED Submit photos for a chance to have it featured as the cover art for upcoming issues! This month’s photo taken by Jordan Self at the Virgin Valley Warm Springs. Inside Northern Nevada magazine wants to feature local photos on the cover. The publisher of INN, Winnemucca Publishing, is soliciting photos from local photographers in the tri-county area; the winners for each month will have their photos featured as the cover art for issues from May through October with full credit. Since the photos must be printed in a larger format, the quality is crucial; photos taken with a cell phone are typically OK unless the user zoomed in through the phone, which significantly degrades quality. Photographers who wish to submit photos are asked to abide by the following parameters: • Do not edit, resize, crop or enlarge the photo; • Send full resolution. The photo must be at least 300dpi. This means photos copied or saved directly through social media or a website will not work (they are typically 72 dpi) as they will be too pixelated when re-

sized for print; • Do not zoom in too much on the subject. We are able to utilize “dead space” when resizing for print; • Photos should clearly feature the elements of that month’s theme By submitting, potential winners agree the photos that are chosen become the property of Winnemucca Publishing and may be used in future publications. INN is distributed throughout the I-80 corridor and features light-hearted stories that go with each month’s theme, as well as upcoming events, recipes, crafts and ideas to make summer 2021 the best it can be! Themes for this year include: June — Celebrating Basque Heritage July — Family activities (board games, movie nights, family crafts, outdoor activities) August — Camping & Fishing in northern Nevada September — Ghost towns and where to

find them October — Celebrating Native American Heritage We want our readers to have fun with this project! This might mean taking a photo of your kids hanging haphazardly out of the windows of your RV (while parked, of course) or cooking a meal outside in a Dutch oven together (August’s issue). Be creative and send your photos to inn@winnemuccapublishing.net with the name of the month you’re submitting for in the subject line. Oh, and a pro-tip: we prefer people in the photos! We will respond to the winners as we go. The deadline for submissions is the 10th of every month for the following month’s issue. So if you are submitting for May, you must have your photos in by April 10. The photos do not necessarily have to be current, but they have to be of high enough quality to enlarge them for the front cover, so scanned photos will not work. Hit the road Over a year ago, RVing was often thought of as a thing to do after you retired. With the rise of social distancing, it seems that taking family trips in an RV has grown in popularity. There is less worry about social distancing when you bring your room along with you! You don’t even have to own an RV to take a trip; many companies are offering rental options to customers. Now is the time to give it a try while remote working and social distancing are still a thing. There is no better place to take an RV trip than the vast and beautiful Northern Nevada. The desert is full of many hidden treasures waiting to be seen; all you have to do is hit the road!

Five tips for your first RV trip Be a good neighbor - Owners of Mitchell’s stateline RV Park, Rob and Cheryl Mitchell, said that a great way to be a good camper is to treat the place as the your own. Pick up after yourselves and your pets.

1

Storage - One benefit of RV travel is that there is plenty of storage room. Store the bulkier items in the exterior compartments - this is where we’d keep camp chairs and luggage for example. Store everything in an area with a latched door to prevent spills and breakage while traveling. On that same note make sure all latches are closed before traveling.

3

Marine toilet paper- Make sure you pack plenty of the proper toilet paper for an rv. Do not use regular toilet paper in our RV. RV/ Marine Toilet Tissue is an economical 1-ply paper, that can be used in portable, permanent, or home toilets it is specially designed to break down in contact with the liquids from the holding tanks. Thus RV/ Marine Toilet Tissue flushes easily and dissolves rapidly, helping prevent messy clogs.

4

4   INSIDE NORTHERN NEVADA | MAY 2021

Get there before dark - This is especially important if you are new at RVing or not familiar with the RV you are traveling with. Parking and leveling your RV can get difficult when you can’t properly see. Many RV parks have pull through spaces, but properly hooking up and leveling can be hard in the dark. On that same note make sure you have plenty of wheel and leveling blocks - an unlevel RV causes all sorts of problems best avoided by having the proper equipment.

2

Black water - Perhaps not the most glamorous of topics, but this is very important while RVing. Make sure you know how to dump your black water tank. Your RV’s manual should have instructions and there are a lot of instruction videos on the internet to find. Make sure you watch a few before your trip. The last thing you want is to be out of service and in need of video instruction. When planning your trip make sure you map out places to dump your black water, not every RV park or area has dump stations. Hunting for a dump station might put a damper on your vacation plans.

Take in the sights Four RV friendly scenic byways in Northern Nevada

Lamoille Canyon

A scenic byway since the 1930s. Lamoille Canyone is a 12 mile long, National Forest Scenic Byway. It starts near Lamoille on SR 227 and proceeds south near the entrance of Lamoille Canyon. Best access from June through October though this can largely be dependent on snowfall. It is not plowed in the winter. Found along the scenic byway: Powerhouse Picnic Area, Camp Lamoille, Thomas Canyon Campground, Changing Canyon Nature Trail, Terraces Picnic Area and Roads End Trailhead are all located along Lamoille Canyon Road. The Roads End Trailhead is the northern terminus of the Ruby Crest National Recreation Trail.

Wheeler Peak Scenic Drive

Starting at the Park boundary on Nevada Highway 488, the Wheeler Peak Scenic Drive takes you on a paved 12 mile, out and back road to an elevation exceeding 10,000 feet above sea level, to the face of Wheeler Peak. Use the Wheeler Peak Scenic drive to access the popular hiking trails to the Alpine Lakes, the bristlecone pine interpretive trail, the Osceola Ditch, and the Wheeler Peak Summit Trailhead, Lehman Caves Visitor Center. Pullouts provide excellent viewing and photography opportunities for Mount Moriah, Lehman Creek, Wheeler Peak, Doso Doyabi Peak, and the Snake Valley below. Vehicles and trailers over 24 feet in length are not permitted beyond the Upper Lehman Creek Campground (mile marker 3). During the winter, this road is impassible, and is closed to vehicle traffic at the Upper Lehman Campground.

Loneliest Road in America

The Nevada section of transcontinental U.S. Route 50. US 50 has a diverse route through the state, traversing the resort communities of Lake Tahoe, the state capital in Carson City, historical sites such as Fort Churchill State Historic Park, petroglyphs, alpine forests, desert valleys, ghost towns, and Great Basin National Park. The route was constructed over a historic corridor, initially used for the Pony Express and Central Overland Route and later for the Lincoln Highway.

Big Smoky Valley Named

for

the

haze that often settles in the valley, this scenic drive follows the entire length (100 miles) of Highway 376 in central Nevada. The nearest town to the southern beginning point is Tonopah, and the nearest town to the northern beginning point is Austin. The Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest dominates the byway with acres of mountain ranges, alpine lakes and forests. On most of the trip, mountains as high as 11,000 feet loom east and west of SR 376; expanses of sagebrush separate the road from the mountains. At Round Mountain catch a glimpse of a massive open-pit gold mine along the side of the highway.

Traveling with pets Advice from Dr. Estill at Desert Trails Veterinary Services in Winnemucca, NV

Safe way to travel

First aide

Make sure you have appropriate containment items for traveling- leashes and collars or harnesses. Crates if your pet is crate trained. If your pet is highly active, recommend restraining with a crate or seat belt device while traveling to avoid them causing damage. If they are more relaxed, they can ride safely free, but being restrained is never bad. Make sure if you travel with a traditional collar that it is fitted appropriately. Sometimes when animals get excited, they can slip out of them. Same goes for harnesses.

Dr. Estill recommends taking bandage material, such as gauze and vet wrap, topical antibiotic, and when hiking, Benadryl. Benadryl is useful for allergic reactions or to slow rattlesnake venom. Your regular veterinarian can give you the dosage of Benadryl for your pet.

Plan ahead

While most RV parks are pet friendly it is always good to plan ahead and make sure. Some parks may have pet and/or breed restrictions. Not all parks will have dog runs or pet areas, so if those are needed you will have to plan places to stop accordingly. Speaking of stops, plan for frequent stops for your pet. Puppies and dogs with medical condition will need to stop more often than a potty trained dog. Dr. Estill recommends getting your pet microchipped. If you and your pet do get separated, it is a great way to help them be returned.

Carsickness and anxiety

Worried about your pet being car sick or anxious on your trip? Dr. Estill highly recommends small trips in town to assess for those conditions. If they are present, talk to your veterinarian, because there are great prescription medication options for both anxiety and motion sickness. Sadly, not so much in the over-the-counter department.

Diet

Make sure you pack their food, to avoid diet changes and the potential tummy upset. If they are on medication, make sure you have enough for the trip.

Vaccinate your pups

Also, ensuring your pups are fully vaccinated, as you often stop in public areas. Puppies not yet fully vaccinated require care to prevent unnecessary disease exposure. That means incompletely vaccinated puppies should not be exposed to public areas, and contagious diseases like the parvovirus, can be present in many places, particularly where lots of dogs have been.

Pro tip

Make sure when packing that animals can’t get into anything inappropriate while traveling. Sometimes they get bored and mischievous with your luggage.

Driving Safety Information from Nevada Department of Transportation

5 things to check on your vehicle before a trip

• Tires: check your tire pressure at least once a month--including your spare. Check for irregular or excessive treat wear. • Belts/Hoses: check for blistered, cracked, but or damaged belts and hoses and check all connections. • Wiper Blades: check for wear and tear. • Fluid Levels: check oil, brake, transmission, power steering, coolant and windshield washer fluid. • Lights: check headlights, brake lights, turn signals, emergency flashers and interior lights

High winds in Nevada

Emergency Roadside Kit packing list

• cell phone • maps • first aid kit • nonperishable food/ water/medicine • work gloves • flashlight • flares • jumper cables • car jack • repair tools

An often-overlooked hazard while RVing is driving in high winds. The higher profile of RV’s makes them more prone to being pushed for flipped by high winds. NDOT maintains wind warnings systems for high-profile vehicle in wind-prone areas such as the Hoover Dam bypass bridge in southern Nevada and U.S. 395/ Washoe-Pleasant Valley in northern Nevada. When travelling by RV, you must obey the wind warnings and prohibitions when in effect. • Always wear your seat belt • Slow your speed to a safe driving speed and turn on headlights if needed to account for potentially lower visibility created by blowing dust, sand, snow or rain. • Keep your hands firmly on the wheel • Make steering corrections when driving from wind-protected areas to unprotected areas. The wind may suddenly move your car when traveling from a protected to unprotected area. • Be aware of and maintain safe distances from other vehicles near you, particularly other RVs, campers, trucks, buses, or trailers being towed. These vehicles could swing out and hit your vehicle in sudden wind gusts. • Watch for objects that could potentially blow into the roadway. Tree limbs may break and/or other debris may come loose during strong winds. • Listen to the radio for changes in weather conditions that could create more dangerous driving. • If winds are severe enough to prevent safe driving, pull over into a safe parking area (the shoulder of a busy roadway is not safe) and stop, making sure you are away from trees, power lines or other tall objects that could fall onto your vehicle.

7 tips for driving in the rain

• Dry soles of shoes when entering vehicle from rainy conditions to prevent shoes from slipping off pedals. • Be aware and avoid flooded areas – never attempt to cross running or flooded water • By Nevada law, wipers must be on while driving in rain or snow • Keep additional distance from other vehicles • Turn off cruise control to reduce hydroplaning • Brake earlier with less force and turn slower than you would in normal driving conditions. Don’t slam on brakes. Apply steady pressure on ABS-equipped vehicles and pump the brakes if necessary on non-ABS vehicles. • If vehicle begins to skid, steer in direction of slide and slowly remove foot from accelerator
