Jackson Medical Mall: A One of a Kind
In 1969, Mississippians were shopping at the City of Jackson’s first mall. The Jackson Mall was the largest, most diverse mall within 400 miles of stores. It sat on some 900,000 square feet on 53 acres of land. In 1978 however, Metrocenter Mall opened in South Jackson, followed by Northpark Mall seven years later on the northern edge of the city. Shopping came to a standstill at the Jackson Mall as anchor stores moved out, taking customers and other tenants with them. As the ‘80s came to a close, Jackson’s original retail mall was nearly an empty shell and its Midtown neighborhood was crumbling around it. 12

In 1995, Dr. Aaron Shirley, former project director for Mississippi’s largest community health center and a long-time resident of Midtown, was walking through the old mall’s echoing corridors
when he conceived a plan to bring it and the surrounding community back to life. Dr. Shirley envisioned a comprehensive, multidisciplinary healthcare complex. He proposed the property

be converted to a stateof-the-art ambulatory healthcare facility, providing quality healthcare for the urban poor of Jackson, Mississippi. This ambitious vision for rebirth and renewal would be in Dr. Shirley’s words, “a community-based venture,” in terms of its ownership and mission. Financial support from three prominent state banking institutions established the Jackson Medical Mall Foundation later that year. It remains the management arm of the facility. Today, Dr. Shirley chairs the Jackson Medical Mall Foundation Board of Directors. In 2001, the Mall became the Jackson Medical Mall Thad Cochran Center and continues to have a reputation for
innovative management, efficiency of operations, and financial stability. The Jackson Medical Mall Foundation celebrated 15 years in 2011, and evolved its theme to “Medical Mall in Motion” for 2012. This theme means that the Jackson Medical Mall is moving forward with Health Awareness, Housing with its community development, and Health Care Development with its Mississippi Health Care Corridor. Some of the largest tenants are the University of Mississippi Medical Center primary and specialty clinics including the Cancer Institute, Jackson State University’s College of Public Service, Jackson Heart Study, and Mississippi State Department of Health clinics.

ackson Medical Mall Thad Cochran Center is a bustling facility on 53 acres conveniently located in the heart of Jackson, at 350 West Woodrow Wilson Avenue, and is surrounded by interstates 55 and 220. I-55 is 3.2 miles from the Mall, approximately 7 minutes. I-220 is 2.3 miles from the Mall, approximately 5 minutes. The Mall’s major source of revenue comes from the rental of more than 900,000 square feet of leasing space. From 1996 to 2001 there has been a 627.62% increase in those dollars. In 2002, the Foundation netted $8,221,723.89 compared to $744,695.76 in 1996. The Jackson Medical Mall has proved to be an international model for operations in a mixed-used facility. The interdisciplinary healthcare and human services system in place at the Jackson Medical Mall works everyday to move our state from the top of the list for chronic diseases and other negative health factors and indicators, by providing quality medical treatment and health and wellness education.
COMMUNITY EVENT SPACES In addition to health services, the Jackson Medical Mall offers three spaces for public and private events. The community Meeting Room, Common Area, and Center Stage are rented on a consistent basis to accommodate neighborhood, business, and civic organizations in their outreach efforts in communi-

ties around the Metro-Jackson area. Jackson Medical Mall tenants can use the spaces free of charge once a month. The Community Meeting Room is equipped with male, female, and handicapped-accessible showers, a full kitchen, multimedia capabilities and seat-

ing arrangements for up to 220 people. Creative activities such as performance choirs, art exhibits, health fairs, and theatrical presentations are held in the Common Area and on Center Stage.
SCHOLARS FOR DOLLARS JMMF offers to provide schoolbased and community-based multi-generation financial literacy and education services to at least 300 adults and up to 1,000 children and youth, who either live, attend school, work

ADVISORY BOARD The Jackson Medical Mall Foundation has strong ties to the community and builds on that relationship with an extensive community outreach program. The basis for that relationship was established in the spring of 1997 with the first meeting of the Jackson Medical Mall Community Advisory Board. This board consists of representatives from the local neighborhood associations, area businesses, churches and schools.
AFFORDABLE HOUSING The Jackson Medical Mall Foundation is taking a different approach to promoting health and wellness. Its new remedy is to build green-friendly homes. These homes will be a part of an all new subdivision called Homestead Heights, which is located just east of the Jackson Medical Mall. These single-family homes ranging from two to five bedrooms paint a different picture for the Jackson Medical Mall District. The Jackson Medical Mall Foundation realizes that homeownership is the great “American Dream.”
The Jackson Medical Mall Foundation also helps first-time homeowners through the process of buying their own home by offering free credit counseling and budget workshops.
CORRIDOR PROJECT The intersection of Woodrow Wilson Avenue and North State Street is one of the busiest in the State of Mississippi and is the starting point for the corridor which will proceed along Woodrow Wilson. This project has the potential to development declining communities along the corridor route. JMMF offers so much more than space allows us to list. where our fan base is... We want to put people in the stands”, says Jackson. Micheal Perkins, JSU Wide Receiver, agrees with Coach Jackson’s strategy saying that in-state recruiting can only bring better potential to Jackson State.

ackson Expose: Tambra, where were you born and raised? And where did you attend school.
Tambra Cherie: I am very PROUD to say I was born in Jackson, Mississippi! I like to say I was raised by some awesome parents, graduated from Callaway High School and Jackson State University! I travelled a lot and opportunities brought me back to Jackson. I have loved every moment of it! Jackson Expose’: You were awarded the Distinguished “Woman of the Year” Award for 2014 , can you tell us about that.

Tambra Cherie: Talk about excited! I was overwhelmed! I was really surprised when I was told. I learned from a phone interview with a newspaper. When she said why she was interviewing me, I paused, like what? She was in shock no one had told me.
It was a total surprise. But to be honest with you, last year I won the Michelle Obama award at the MLK Banquet and I was honored. I told no one but God in my head when I heard the Woman of the Year speak, “I was coming for that (The Woman of the Year Award), and I wanted it while I was still young!” Meaning, I wanted to continue to do what my community needed. I love helping people. I have a passion for people. Our station is very community oriented. I was just going to keep doing what I love and have a passion for. It’s always a blessing when others see the good in you and the things you are doing.

Community Service I always wanted to be more than a voice. I want to have purpose. I like to see others happy. I love talking to people. I remember one year, I did Christmas dinner for the ladies and children at one of the homeless shelters. Do you know how much I loved talking and being around them along with the kids? They were excited opening gifts but I enjoyed them as much as they say they enjoyed me. I thank God for even allowing me to be in a position to help others, to be a voice, but
more importantly, to be a listener as well. I think my job is more than to entertain and give the gossip. Although I love to have fun and talk with my listeners, I also think as personalities, we have a duty to our communities we live in. Jackson Expose’: I heard you speak at an event where you talked about how you came to realize your purpose for having the platform that you have, can you elaborate? Tambra Cherie: Yes, I am one of those personalities who believe on-air personalities have a responsibility to give back to their respective communities. I’ve always loved entertainment. I always had a passion

for people and I’ve always loved talking to people. Not just artists, or celebrities, but people. I prayed about it. Did I mention, I also love going to church! I will never forget, one Sunday I walked up to the altar for prayer, I prayed about and I left it there. I wanted guidance. There is a balance you have to find in being a woman of God and being in entertainment. It can be done. I will never forget the Sunday I did that, the very next week, I received a number of calls hosting events and speaking to

kids. Primarily, speaking to kids. I felt like that was my answer to continue to be more than just a voice on the radio. Have a purpose! Jackson Expose’: Do you speak at schools and other charitable events, if so, can you talk a little about those speaking engagements and any rewards you received as a result? Tambra Cherie: Yes. Now I’m far from a motivational speaker
or anything like that and I tell everyone who calls me that very same thing. But I do like talking to kids and young ladies. We just talk. I try to talk with them and not at them. I like to hear what’s going on with them and things they are going through. I like questions. Young people are inquisitive and I pray that maybe I can say something that will only help them or encourage them. As far as rewards, I never do anything looking for recognition or
Jackson Expose’: Tambra, I can recall when you were the host of a television show called “Admission Granted”, how did that hosting position come about? And tell us some of the celebrities you interviewed at that time.

praise. I do it because I want to. That is my reward. A smile on someone’s face that day is reward enough for me.
Tambra Cherie: I was working on my MBA degree and realized after watching 106th and Park, I wanted to host and really wanted to follow my dreams of entertainment. I was interning at a radio station and they introduced me to a producer who knew how to edit and loved television. We would go to any and every entertainment event, concert, and any event that would let us in with a camera. I would interview any artist on the spot who would let me interview them! The first artist I ever interviewed was a rap artist by the name of Mystikal. I was put on the spot in front of a room full of people. I had to go for it! I never looked back. I realized after that interview, I loved it. We would go around the event asking people how they were enjoying themselves. I loved talking to people. With Admission Granted, we covered a number of festivals, concerts, the Vibe Musicfest, Essence Music Festival and the list goes on. It was Admission Granted where I had an hour interview with Hip Hop pioneer Russell Simmons. With Admission Granted I had the opportunity to interview and talk with a number of entertainers ranging from Lil Wayne, Magic Johnson, Keyshia Cole, Eric Benet, Young Jeezy, T.I., Master P, the late rapper Pimp C., 112, Jagged Edge, and the list goes on. When local networks saw the hard work, they loved it because no one else was doing it. The years Admission Granted aired it went from late nights on public access, to CBS affiliate WJTV, to Fox, to coming on in the middle of the daytime; Saturdays at 10:30am, 11am, then 12 Noon on The CW network affiliate, even Sundays. It was even picked up and aired in Louisiana and California Bay Area.
Jackson Expose’: You don’t seem intimidated by interviewing famous people. What prevents you from being star struck? Tambra Sherie: I can honestly say I’ve never been star struck. Even before entertainment. My role models were my parents and grandparents growing up. I realize they are everyday people with a job they love to do as well! They followed their passion. The only person that has ever walked into the radio station where I was like, I watched you every day on the re-runs of Amen, was Clifton Davis. You know the Reverend on the sitcom Amen! I thought to myself, who would have thought years ago while sitting in front of the television I would get to sit down and interview you. Life’s funny things! Jackson Expose’: You host a daily radio show, tell us all about your show. Tambra Cherie: Well Middays with Tambra Cherie on 97.7 WRBJ is just awesome! Not only do we entertain you with the hottest music but we give you the latest in entertainment news, gossip, events, and so much more! Did you like that promo? No really, I love doing the Midday! We offer variety in music. You never hear the same thing every single day! Our audience is so broad and I love it. During that time of day, our listeners range from 18 to 50 and I love it! We cater to working women and men while they are on the J-O-B! We talk too! I love when the phone lines are open and we discuss various issues! On Wednesdays, we do Relationship Hour and we talk about everyday relationships, problems, and concerns. The topics come from the listeners. Things people are going through or have already been through. I love our listeners. I encourage them to call me! If there is something going on in the community you want to address and let others know, call in! Everyone or every station can’t do that. We call ourselves THE BEAT OF THE CAPITAL for a number of reasons!

Jackson Expose’: What are some of the perks of being a celebrity radio show host? Tambra Cherie: Celebrity? Where? LoL It is a fun job and it does have its perks. If you love to travel, you would love it. There is so much you can do and go to! The Grammy’s in LA was a great experience for me. I like the BET awards in LA every year. I use to not like concerts unless I’m working in some capacity. But I’ve grown to enjoy them and the art of the production. I like to be entertained. Not to mention, I like to talk about it when I get back to work and share it with our 22
listeners. I also have mentors in the industry and I like to visit their stations & talk with them. Never stop learning. I was in Atlanta at the studio a few weeks ago with our syndicated morning show, The Rickey Smiley Morning Show. I watched them like a hawk! From production to breaks, I watched everything. It’s good to be a teacher but stay a student in your craft. I take productive criticism well from the veterans in the industry. It only makes you better. I’ve had some great teachers. Not to mention, I have an awesome team at work! We encourage each other.
Jackson Expose’: Tell us about some of the exciting events you have hosted recently. And some of the ones that are coming up that you will be a part of. Tambra Cherie: Recently, the K Michelle, Carl Thomas, and Jon B concert. That was fun. Of course, Rock the Runway is our annual charity fashion show held each year at the Jackson Convention Complex. I co-host that every year with Gary with the Tea from The Rickey Smiley Morning Show. Its always fun! I love that show!

I also host the Red Carpet for Rock the Runway and I get to talk one on one with the audience. I also recently hosted an entrepreneurship networking mixer along with monthly wine tastings that’s catered to our young professionals and networking. I recently hosted an empowerment and character building tea for young high school girls. That was an awesome event. Matter of fact, in the next couple of weeks, I’m honored to have been asked to host a Ladies Networking Brunch by a great group of young entrepreneurs here in the market. I’m also scheduled to host during
the Jackson R & B Festival featuring Fantasia, Bell Biv Devoe, and Chrisette Michelle. Also, in the month of August, I’m booked to co-host a Hip Hop concert with Vivica Fox. I like to stay busy. I enjoy it. Busy is good. Jackson Expose’: What words of encouragement would you give to someone who is pursuing his or her dream? Tambra Cherie: Go for it! Never let someone tell you that you don’t have the experience to do something you have a passion for! Find creative ways and make your own way! I have two degrees, one a MBA
degree, I thought I wanted to be in corporate America. But I don’t even like to dress up! God knew exactly what he was doing! Although I don’t have a Mass Communications degree, I have been blessed to go back and speak to the Mass Communications departments at the colleges and universities. I had hands-on experience. Life was my teacher. I followed my heart and I fell in love with my passion! Shhhhh……I really haven’t worked a day yet!!!!

artika Brianne is a multitalented singer-songwriter, actress, and model hailing from Mississippi. She has played the guitar since age 9 and has quietly pursued the arts while attending college. Crafting music with an acoustic-organic feel is intuitive and innate to Martika as her debut single illustrates. Martika may be small, but she’s a force to be reckoned with! Standing 5’3”, she rocks every inch of her body with class, style, and attitude making her feel as a remarkable 7 feet tall beauty queen (on her good days, of course)! Modeling is a passion of hers, and she works with ambitious photographers, MUA’s, and stylists in a teamambiance to create superior quality photographs. She enjoys the challenge of versatility and transforming, and being creative. She is a team player and very easy to work with, as well as a reliable and professional performing model. When Martika is not modeling, she is a full-time music major in college doing what she loves - playing trombone, guitar, putting on recitals, and sometimes even working on the set of movie films!

Zandra C Bailey born Zandra Lee, is a native of Jackson MS. As a child I was raised in fashion. As my mother was the fashion commentator for many years to the Hamilton Vouge Esquire Models. I experienced all the ins and outs of fashion with all of its glitz and glam’s fashion has to offer. Also while growing up I attended some of the best fashion shows , fashion seminars and hair shows available. So from there it was only natural for me to start my on accessories business Vintage Barbie only to grow into a personal shopper and buyer for Btq. Like I always say everyday is my runway so why not make it count .

UNDERGROUND 119 Underground 119 was started almost 6 years ago by Mike McRee. He grew up in the Delta and had always loved the music and art related to the blues. He decided to open a blues club in Jackson that was different than any blues club in the state. He wanted a higher-end venue that would focus on the best blues music and art the area had to offer. I think this is one of the main things that sets Underground apart from other blues venues. As well as the overall higher commitment to quality in everything we offer. As you start down the street level stairs, descending into the basement, you already feel you are entering something different. The beautiful art, thick leather couches and table seating offer an area for everyone. I often hear that “it feels like I am in another big city not Jackson�. 30
Our crowd is very diverse, you will see people of all ages, backgrounds, and economic classes mingling and enjoying the great music and atmosphere. As living blues legend Vasti Jackson says, Underground 119 is a high class juke joint not like anything else in the state.

Premiered in Madison, MS

If you were like a lot of people you didn’t realize that you could have gone to the movie Premiere of “Get On Up” and met the main character, Chadwick Boseman. That is, if you had the $50 to spare for a movie ticket. This movie was primarily shot in Jackson, Mississippi. Which means that a lot of the people 34
from the Jackson area were either in the movie or movie extras. If so, they got to attend the movie for free! Ty A. Patterson, owner of Pretty Personality and Phenomenal Gifts LLC, was in attendance because her daughter was an extra in the movie. In attendance with Ty was her fiance’
Edward Rashad, who played Charles Conner, the original drummer for Little Richard.
an organization whose mission is to bridge the gap in race relations in the State of Mississippi.
Ty was ecstatic about seeing people on the big screen that she interacted with during the filming here in Jackson.
According to sources, Tate Taylor, who is from Mississippi, may be shooting another movie in the Jackson, MS area in the near future.
The Premiere raised $25,000 for the nonprofit organization, Mission Mississippi,

COOKING WITH HONEY
JACKTOWN PEANUT BUTTER & CHOCOLATE PIE Warning This Pie Is DELICIOUS ***************************************************
To get started you need 2 large bowls In the first bowl • cream 2 sticks salted butter until creamy • 1/4 sticks Criso • 2-1/2 cups sugar • 5 eggs • 3 tablespoon flour • 1 cup Hershey’s cocoa • 2 tablespoon maple syrup Blend all the ingredients together until smooth • In second bowl add • 1 large spoon of hazelnut cream spread • 1 cup peanut butter • 1 8 oz. cream cheese • 10-12 Reese’s Peanut Butter cups cut into small pieces Blend the above ingredients until smooth in texture Per-heat oven to 350 Cut and place parchment paper into 2 9” pie pans • pour 1/2 of first mixture into each pan dividing evenly • spoon in 2 large spoons of second mixture using a knife lightly pick up and fold the 2 mixtures creating a marbling effect • place in oven back for 35-40 minutes turn off the oven let pies rest until oven is completely cool remove
