RENT VS BUYING

If you are tired of Apartment Living, This article is for YOU!

Many First Time Home Buyers are shocked to find out that often times it is cheaper to buy versus renting.

However, there are several Down Payment Assistance Programs out there that fit a variety of income situations.

Instead of paying high rent for apartments, many could be paying much less to purchase a home that will give them more space, more privacy and a secure backyard for their children to run and play!

Regardless of the program you choose, there are going to be certain requirements regarding credit scores and in some cases, income limits. The best thing to do is to find out if you qualify and if you don’t qualify today,

In fact many are alarmed by the fact that they are paying nearly a thousand dollars for rent when they could be growing equity in a home of their own. One of the major obstacles for many first time home buyers is the lack of having a substantial down payment. 4

ell us about where you were born and raised.

I was born in Natchez MS but was raised in Fayette up until age 6. Then we moved to Port Gibson for the majority of my grade school years. Later we moved to Vicksburg when I was 16.

Where did you attend school?

I attended Warren Central High School, college at Jackson State University, medical school at Meharry Medical College, residency training at University of Mississippi Medical Center

What motivated you to become a physician? Initially I had an encounter with a physician at a career fair at Port Gibson Middle School and felt challenged. He told us “we need more doctors in Mississippi. If you want to make

6

a good iving, this is a good career to choose.” As I grew older, I realized the many health disparities we have here in our state. We lead the nation in so many areas that it’s embarrassing. I really feel convicted every time there is a new statistic. If we as Mississippians don’t work to be the change we need to see, then who is going to do it? Most doctors don’t come from out of state to work. As a result, it’s up to us. Because I grew up here, I’m even more passionate about this quest.

What were some of the challenges you faced in medical school? Failure. I had done fairly well in all my classwork up until then. As I began to struggle with some classes, I was fortunate to be under the tutelage of Bishop Joseph Walker of Mt. Zion who really teaches about purpose. It was then I asked God if there was something else he wanted me to do. Crying on the floor after failing one exam, I told God, “As much as I want to be a doctor, if there is something else you want me to do, reveal it and I’ll do your will.” That was a huge moment of growth for me as things began to turn around and it’s been beyond fruitful ever since.

What area of medicine do you practice and how did you decide on that area of practice? I practice Internal Medicine. When I became a medical student, I think most people thought I was already a doctor. I got so many calls and text messages about health questions and pictures of rashes! Although I know I can’t physically treat everyone, I want to be able to reach as many people as possible. My specialty allows me to have learned about a wide range of medical conditions. As a result, I’ve been blessed to help so many people in dire need of quality care.

Tell us about your practice. At TurnerCare, our theme is “Where We Treat the Whole Person.” We really focus on mind, body, and spirit. I’m so blessed to cast the vision and see it manifesting in the lives of our patients. The ones that really want wellness are getting great results.

We lead the nation in obesity here in Mississippi. Patients travel from all over the state and even some parts of Louisiana. I was telling one patient from Greenwood I could try to find him a doctor so he wouldn’t have to travel a couple hours away. He said, “Doc, I’m 74 years old and finally found someone who really cares, knows what they’re doing, and treat me like family. Just make sure you schedule a late morning appointment to give me time to get there….Us old folks don’t like to get up too early!” The practice has grown way faster than expected. Prior to opening my own practice in November of 2013, I was employed by another company. The growth was steady but not nearly what it is now. We are so blessed that patients are buying into the vision. Our focus is not just in the four walls of the clinic.

We have participated in several community service events as giving back is not an option. Having my own practice has allowed me the autonomy to really focus on having a monumental influence in not just our city but entire state. Recognized as a Young and Influential Figure of Jackson in 2013 by BOOM Magazine, Image Award in Medicine by Phi Beta Sigma in 2014, Mississippi HealthCare Hero in 2014 and Top 50 under 40 in 2015 both by Mississippi Business

Journal, amongst several other recognitions, I am thankful for a contagious energy that is growing as we choose not to be a part of the problem but a part of the solution in

bettering our community. What are your patients saying about the medical service you provide them?

. . .they want to go to a place where they feel like a person and not just a number”.

RIGHT Dr. Turner reaches out to a group of students in the Metro Jackson area.

All of them say they just want to go to a place where they feel like a person and not just a number. They want their doctor to actually listen. Fortunately, we feel like we provide a place where every member of the staff has bought into the vision. As a result, when patients come they say it’s not just a doctor’s appointment, but it’s an experience.

Testimonials:

BOTTOM Dr. Turner speaking to local students about the HIV/AID’S Epidemic (Ages 15 - 24 have the highest incidence.)

Ed Brown — 5 star “I moved to Jackson in 2000 and I never met a Doctor and staff that cared so much about their patients.”

Barbara Tabor says: “One of the reasons I agreed to is all my other doctor would say is you’re sick and I do not know what is wrong with you and turn around and walk out of the exam room. And I was getting worse day by day. Not once did my old doctor run any kind of test to see what was going on with me. The very second Dr. Turner walked into the exam room I felt a peace come over me and a heavy weight was lifted off my shoulders. “ 9

“. . . awesome, compassionate physician. Loves what he does. Living his purpose!”

Tonja Grines Hart — 5 star Wonderful person, awesome, compassionate physician. Loves what he does! Living his purpose!!

What advice would you give to someone who is thinking of pursuing a medical career? Where your heart is, your treasure is. Make sure you are doing it for the right reason. Not just with physicians, but a lot of careers I meet people who are unhappy. You will never reach your full potential if you don’t first find your purpose. The medical career is very demanding , as to whom much is given, much is required. Make sure you are in it to not just make a dollar, but to make a difference.
