Wooden Skyscraper Nature Relinkage-Wooden Museum

602 Design Studio Group Work: Baoqi Ji & Yuhao Zhang Instructor. Prof. Miroslava Brooks 2020. 4

Urbanization has pushed nature outside of our living environment. Cities are now full of steel and concrete structures. People have been de-familiarized with nature and natural elements as the expansion of dense urban cities. For people to re-familiarize the presence of nature within the city, our project intends to bring wood structure back into the city to offer people the chance to have close involvement to the growth of nature. Our project intends to be a “tree” that grows from the gap between The Met Breuer Museum and and historical building Brownstone and integrate with the Brownstone to produce an “organic” building with growing tendency. The warmth of wooden material provide people the opportunity to experience closer to the calming and softer surfaces in nature.

SITE

COLLAGE The collages we did mainly focused on the material difference to form the diptyque image with the Breuer. We aim to create a converCOLLAGE sation between two extremely different materials as soft versus hard. By using the texture of wood, the softness forms a direct physical contrast with the Breuer.

CHUNK This is a chunk model of the spaces on the top, we can see how these spaces are connected with each other. We have steel structure inside the wood claddings to support the curvature of the geometry. We can see the relation between different scales of wood façade panels and the louvre system. We also have skylights on the top to bring more light into the solid volumes.

Enframing Housing and farming community 601 Design Studio Individual Work 2019.09.1-2019.12 Instructor:Scott Erdy Awards: Seleced for Pressing Matter

The strategy of this project is eliminating the boundary between old buildings and nature. In addition, another aim of this project is attracting people’s eyes back to this place, which would not only solve the crowed urban population pressure, but also rekindles the new energic life for old buildings. The concept of this project is about enframing. It gives a possibility to connect old buildings and nature environment together. In other words, it reframes a new relationship. When we have the frame, the new urban residential life with farming, gardens would be the painting in this frame.

Urban Stage Immersive Theatre 701 Design Studio Group Work: Saina Xiang & Yuhao Zhang 2020.09-2020.12 Instructor:Robert Stuart-Smith

This project is a temporary theater that not only intends to rekin-dle an artistic neighborhood but also provides a possibility to construct a theatric urban atmosphere. It is an extension of the Philadelphia Trail Park. Through challenging traditional theatre which is in a fixed situation and massive volume, the ambition of the project is establishing a new representation of the urban stage as a temporary architecture that allows various people to explore, experience, and engage with the art performance world. Immersive theatre, In choose-your-own-adventure theater, the agency is given to the audience to participate in changing the narrative while the performance is taking place. Extends partic-ipation to pre-production so each show is customized per audi-ence at the script level. Each actor has its plotline, follow different characters will have a different story.

Immersive theater corresponds to our idea to create more social engagement activities between artists, actors and local citizens. In immersive theater Each actor has its own plot line, following different characters, audiences will have different stories. Its typology influences our organization to be directionless, and no center.

HUMAN PERCEPTION

For the performance setting up, audience emotion would be influenced by visual and acoustic synthesis. Contradiction between dark and bright space does not only enrich audience experience, but also implies different programs. Such as dark performance room and bright atrium space. Non-human perception creates a polyscalar porousness . architecture that is heterogenous. It has Variable depth, smoothness and colors. It is the project of visual art, in partnership with machine vision.

SEASONAL MARKET Food Market & Garden Sports Center 502 Design Studio 2019.2-2017.6 Individual Work Instructor: Joshua Freese

Architectural space and functions are always in an agreement with both separation and connection. Could space be design in a more simultaneous method or parametric tools would work out in some autonomous space creation? Those issues are major discussion point in this project. To consider the whole context as a synthetic domain, different functional buildings as market and public sports areas are created in main hub and site. Based on the 2D abstract geometry pattern projected on the site, various groups of pattern pieces are resources for building massing creation. Color strategy become materials and façade structure of skin: concrete and glass and iron mullions. For this project design context, the pattern also emphasizes both circulation and spatial features. Different space dimension implies the four seasonal markets features. In addition, the green glass would treat the market as terrariums, where local people can also enjoy the view from four seasons in this market. Separated sports area also with seasonal and nature features is designed for surrounding university students.

Archives Tower Archives of Upenn Museum 501Design Studio Individual Work 2018.10.1-2018.12 Instructor:Danielle Willems Awards: Seleced for Pressing Matter Exhibited in Upenn Museum

The main argument of this project is scale of view. To be specific, it will discuss the viewing relationship between exterior and interior experience in this building. There are two challenges existing in this project. Firstly, at the beginning of this project, I notice that the archive inside museum is hard for public to visit, to view the story behind the artifacts. This is the viewing problems inside the building. Secondly, this site is a small garden, which is surrounded by the museum. The high walls limit outside people to understand the world behind the wall. This is another problem outside the building. Thus, I just wonder how to extend the view from museum to archives and even make a viewing communication between the downtown sky line and nature world in the university campus. In other words, I would try to break the boundary of museum and archive, the boundary between this project and outside world. Furthermore, the detail connection design which would follow the concept is another important consideration.

Thirty-one sences of Zhuo Zhenyuan Wen Zhenming(Song)

06

COMMERCE MOUNATAIN Proposal of A Business Mixed Building Graduation Year Individual Work Instructor. Prof. Li Hui 2017. 9

We used to enjoy the traditional Chinese gardens in Suzhou, such as Zhuo Zheng garden via two dimension plan. However, the designer of Zhuo Zheng Garden, Wen Zhenming (Song dynasty) relied on axonometric drawings to image future programs in this garden, such as the "Thirty-one scene of Zhuo Zheng Garden". There is an interesting phenomenon in China that the repetitive banal super business center have now taken control all over our daily life, especially in China. City should acts like people. Shanghai was a 20 year vigorous girl vs Shuzhou as a old charming lady once upon a time. However, we can no longer distinguish them. Both of the ladies are now dressed with a terrible uniform call consuming flamboyant a fake promising modern life. These projects criticized space of current business-mixed centers and reconsider one new unique possibility that fits Suzhou's local culture. Different types of mountains in Chinese landscape painting and artificial garden are the major observed object. The art connection between painting and architecture design is revived.

CUBE OFFICE BUILDING

PLAN & SECTIONS

WALL SECTIONS & DETAILS

The introduction of BIM makes possible the re-framing of how construction technology is taught to architecture students. It realigns its learning methods with the practice of ‘design’, modeling and materializing. BIM protocols offer a distinct advantage to students who virtually model, and thus build, with eyes that aim to embody the material definition of wood joists, the framing system they help to define, and the larger wall assembly within which they are contained. Designing and building a office in Revit is our goal for this assignment, it is more like a practice to equip us with some essential techniques of Revit than a real design. By this chance, we could know how the structure, circulation and design connect with each other. 55/56
