Hi, my name is Jacopo, I am Italian and I have recently graduated in Architecture from the University of Cagliari, Italy. Over the last few years, I have gained extensive experience, both academically and professionally. I have taken part in several international workshops dealing with different topics, ranging from planning to architectural and engineering design. I have spent a period in Germany at Hafen City Universität (HCU) in Hamburg, where I attended several courses and developed my final Master project. Before leaving for Germany, I had been collaborating with “VPS Architetti”, an Architecture Studio located in Cagliari, for a year. My mother tongue is Italian and I also speak fluent English and intermediatelevel German. During my training I have worked both alone and as part of a team, and I have had the opportunity to deal with the majority of aspects involved in case planning. I like to work with my hands and
to approach the design process by working with models and taking pictures of the scenes that represent the space I have imagined. This method helps me to reach a better understanding of the forms and possible spatial relations, for example with natural light. I am deeply concerned with the visual representation of the projects and prepared to work hard on it, especially combining manual skills with digital possibilities. I am also interested in graphic design, photography and creative disciplines, which encourage me to think outside the box and combine different points of view. I am co-founder and member of a small artisan firm called “Ago Filo”, which develops and produces handmade items, especially in the field of design and graphic design. It is with pleasure that I present you a brief resume of my academic and professional works, which will contribute to revealing my personal way of working and designing. Thank you for reviewing this portfolio, I look forward to hearing from you.

Egidio Marzona, a German art collector, is the owner of a huge collection on the “Avant Garde” that counts more than a million objects. Marzona’s ambition is to create an open Archive and make it accessible to visitors and researchers in order to provide the opportunity to further develop the studies on this historical period. For this reason, the city of Berlin offered Marzona an empty area in the Kulturforum for the construction of a dedicated building; with my project I attempted to create a “Kultur Haus” , inspired by the particular relation between the art pieces and Marzona’s way of living with them. The building is influenced by the ancient Greek “Prostas + Megaron”
house typology in which the most important rooms are distributed around a central courtyard. The main North entrance is aligned with the side stairs of the Neue National Galerie basement of Mies Van der Rohe. A one-piece roof keeps all volumes of the composition together, and only the volumes that contain the Archive and Library arise to be visible from the street. On the East side a long glass wall offers view over the Kulturforum from the gallery called “Promenade de l’Avantgarde”, a continuous path on the first floor that houses the temporary exhibition and develops around the courtyard, the main spaces of the archive and the library.

This work is a case study on the city of Venice and the problems concerning the character of the city entrance in “Piazzale Roma” which contains the exchange hub of the city. In order to give the “entrance” a new identity, the different relations of the city spaces with water and particularly with the sidewalks called “fundamenta” and the urban squares called “Campi” have been analyzed. The strong hierarchy between the spaces allows people to find their way easily in the city, and this fact suggested that the design should recall this variety of elements in order to create a new access that could be readily understandable. First of all the limits of the area
were defined through a continuous wall made with wood columns placed side by side; this wall was opened in two points creating a recognizable accesses to the city (“Die Türen”). The focus was subsequently moved to the “Papadopuli” garden, an ancient private courtyard which was transformed into a public park for the city and is currently poorly kept and badly frequented due to its location. In order to improve the quality of this space, the ancient brick wall was preserved and restored and a new front along the canal created, consisting in a number of buildings to be used for student accommodation, offices and spaces for exhibitions and ateliers.

This project was conceived as an exercise concerning the spatial, compositional and functional difficulties linked to the L shape plan. The house consists of two levels, with North exposure to the street and South exposure to its private backyard. The ground level is made up by the entrance, living room and kitchen; a service block divides these two spaces maintaining the distribution in correspondence of the South windows.
The sleeping area, with bedrooms and bathroom, also contains a studio suspended from the double height ceiling and a terrace, which overlooks the two sides of the house providing an outside extension even on this floor. The composition plan of both floors is highlighted by the materials used: a stone ventilated façade on the ground level and a plaster cover on the first floor, providing plasticity to the volume.

This project concerns the enlargement of the city art gallery of Cagliari. T he building is located within the city public garden, which offers breathtaking view over the Eastern urban landscape. The connection with the existing block is achieved through an additional volume containing the vertical distribution. The new building is designed to recall the dimensional proportion of the old one and to ensure the exposure on the West side to the stunning rock side of
CORPO ESISTENTE
the hill, thereby creating a sort of intimate area called “Cavea” which offers the space for external exhibitions. This space is overlooked by the temporary exhibition room, characterized by a continuous glass façade which enables visitors to relate with external spaces. Furthermore, the last floor is designed as a green roof in order to take advantage of the extraordinary position of the building and offer an additional external public space.

This project arises as the proposal for a new range of furniture at a renowned bar in Cagliari historic city centre. The extraordinary characteristics of the place, located above the ancient city ramparts, influenced a reorganization of the project, to be extended to the space configuration in order to improve the quality of the public space and to give a clear identity to the site. Firstly, an elevated platform was created, allowing customers to enjoy the landscape also when seated and conceiving a new space configuration for public and private uses. Additionally, the pre-existing structures were replaced with new gazeboes, made of simple and regular wood elements, the design of which was inspired by a study of the shapes and characteristics of the histo-
rical context, with particular reference to the ancient Pisan tower. The series of gazeboes creates a colonnade aligned with the tower, which invites the observer to relate with it, and gives the opportunity to organize different activities at the foot of it. Secondly, the furniture was designed as requested by the client: a table which can be used in two different ways, a chair which combined with others becomes a public bench and a chaise longue which can be easily transformed into an exhibition support. The furniture range and the organization of space are designed with a view to the flexibility and the different possibilities which a public space combined with a private activity could offer nowadays.

Ago Filo is a self-initiated project by myself and Luxembourgish Graphic Designer Lisa Keiffer. The passion for handcraft and paper products represents the basis of our works; the entire identity of the firm is internally designed and all the objects produced are handcrafted by craftsmen. Our launch products consist in a series of booklets with original illustrations and available in three formats; each bo-
oklet is entirely handmade, from paper folding to the final cut. The paper is accurately selected and combined in order to comply with the different characteristics and uses of the different models. The series is currently on sale on our website and also in a number of shops. The Luxembourg art museum “Mudam selected our booklets for sale in its bookshop.
