WELCOME
LONG LIVE
love
In a year when Earth seemed to shift on its axis, we decided to produce a magazine that celebrates the one thing the world needs a whole lot more of – love. While Australia waits for leaders to lead by passing long-overdue legislation on marriage equality and giving all couples the same rights, we are committed to highlighting the fact that love is love. We are equally committed to showcasing our amazing corner of the country. The four of us grew up in other parts of New South Wales but were drawn to the allencompassing beauty of the Blue Mountains. We’ve found ‘home’, in much the same way our covergirls Kylie and Tiphanee describe since they made the great leap (see their True Love story on page 18). Along with the magnificence that surrounds us, what we particularly love about life in the mountains is the abundance of local talent and community spirit. In the process of putting our first issue together, we have been amazed by the generosity of those willing to share their stories and their creativity. Our sincere thanks goes to everyone who has contributed to bringing Blue Mountains Love to life.
Enjoy! The BML team 6

Our magazine is for all lovers, and we want people from far and wide to know they are very welcome to come and celebrate their love in the Blue Mountains.

Make sure you’re fitting in 30 minutes of exercise most days. Moving your body helps to boost the skin’s collagen and elastin content, so it appears smoother and healthier. Overhaul your skincare regime. If there’s a product in the mix that’s not pulling its weight, now is the time to ditch it and switch to the good stuff – preferably organic skincare.

Add probiotics such as kombucha, kefir and yoghurt to your daily diet. Probiotics have been shown to improve skin elasticity, reduce wrinkle depth and maintain the skin’s moisture content. Start using a gentle facial exfoliant every two to three days. This improves microcirculation, reduces the appearance of large pores and helps to fade pigmentation (try Clémence Organics 2 in 1: Face Scrub + Mask).

Bridget Carmady (BNat, BHSc Hons) is a Blue Mountains-based naturopath with an interest in skincare, particularly ageing, acne and dermatitis. Bridget is also owner and founder of organic skincare brand Clémence Organics. By creating luxurious organic skincare without compromise, the brand’s purpose is to empower consumers to make smart skincare choices based on the relationship between beauty, health and the environment. clemenceorganics.com 16
Reduce sugar in your diet and increase the amount of anti-inflammatory and antioxidant-rich foods found in the Mediterranean diet. This will reduce redness and calm any existing skin irritations. Stay out of the sun. UV radiation causes the most damage to your skin, so minimise your time in the sun to keep your complexion even.
•
Ensure you’re getting at least eight hours of sleep every night. Collagen is produced in our skin as we sleep, so if you’re not getting enough shut-eye, you’re not making collagen. Keep your skin hydrated by drinking at least two litres of water and herbal tea every day, and reduce the amount of caffeine and alcohol you consume. Skin hydration can be aided externally using skincare products containing hyaluronic acid, a natural ingredient that has a high water-binding capacity (try Clémence Organics Ultimate Face Cream). BML

TRUE LOVE
Kylie Tiphanee AND
KATOOMBA
DENIED THE RIGHT TO MARRY LEGALLY, SYDNEY TREE-CHANGERS KYLIE WATSON AND TIPHANEE ATHANS HAVE EMBRACED THEIR BLUE MOUNTAINS ‘TRIBE’ WHILE THEY WAIT FOR JUSTICE TO PREVAIL.

A lot of people in our community may not choose to “ get married, but it is their right to be able to make that choice.
“
20
March 20, 2015 should have been the most precious day in the lives of Kylie Watson and Tiphanee Athans. ‘Save the date’ cards had been sent far and wide, a venue had been booked and wedding preparations were under way. But it was not to be. “We chose not to go ahead with the wedding because there isn’t marriage equality,” explains Tiphanee. “In reality, all that expense, time and effort, however beautiful, was just going to be for a party. We decided to wait until same-sex marriage is legal and do it properly.” Kylie echoes these sentiments: “We have friends who have had a commitment ceremony in Australia and then gone overseas to have the real thing, but that wasn’t an option for us. We feel that it’s not respectful to our brothers and sisters in the community, and it won’t be recognised here anyway.” Kylie and Tiphanee also felt it was unfair to expect family and friends to have to travel across the seas for their wedding. “It is important that our relationship is recognised and that we have the same rights as everyone else in Australia,” says Kylie. “A lot of people in our community may not choose to get married, but it is their right to be able to make that choice.” Family and friends were supportive of the couple’s decision. So for now, while our country’s leaders play political football with so many hearts and minds, the wedding is on hold, but the love story continues. 21
SLOW-BURNING ROMANCE A chance encounter in the corridors of a television studio propelled Kylie and Tiphanee into each other’s sphere, but it would be years before love blossomed between them.
As Tiphanee was leaving, Kylie kissed her goodnight and the penny finally dropped. They soon became inseparable and, after 12 months, moved in together. That was nearly five years ago, and they now call the Blue Mountains home after making the tree change in January 2016.
“I was doing some work in TV production and our paths crossed at Channel 7, where Kylie worked,” Tiphanee recalls. “We knew of each other but weren’t close. And then, a few years down the track, we reconnected as friends at a Women in Film networking event.”
“We arrived with all our furniture, sweating in summer clothes because it was a typically stifling hot day in the city, and it was freezing in Leura. We put the fire on that first night and literally let it burn until the end of winter, until we acclimatised,” says Kylie.
Kylie developed a “massive crush” and couldn’t stand to be around Tiphanee for fear of acting “weird”. “I fought the feelings for about eight months while friends tried to match-make, dropping hints that Tiph just didn’t pick up on because I didn’t have the confidence to be upfront with her,” says Kylie.
So, what prompted two successful businesswomen – former TV star and model Kylie is an interior designer at Belle Abode Interiors, and ex-TV producer Tiphanee is now a genealogist at Branches of Time – to relocate?
“Finally, I organised a romantic dinner with French Champagne and a house full of candles to set the mood. I told Tiphanee to make sure she arrived before sunset, because the sunset from my apartment overlooking Sydney harbour was beautiful. Of course, she was late and had no idea of my intentions,” Kylie remembers. 22
“We wanted to slow down, leave the frantic pace of Sydney behind and be with people who were more in alignment with us and our views,” Kylie recalls. “Sydney can be aggressive and pushy, and I’ve lived there all my life,” says Tiphanee, “It was a big change but I felt the Blue Mountains was still close enough to the city in case I wanted a fix of hectic.”
magnetic about this mountain – “There’s justassomething soon as you start heading up,
“
your shoulders drop and you can breathe again.
23
24
After surviving their first winter, Kylie emerged from hibernation to embrace her mountain lifestyle by developing a newfound love of bushwalking. “I’ve always tried to keep close to nature, even in the city, but now I’m discovering beautiful, majestic places every week. I have absolutely fallen in love with the mountains,” she explains According to Kylie, Tiphanee hit the ground running, joining various community groups, hosting her own radio show and being elected Co-Convenor of Pink Mountains, the local peak body for the LGBTIQ community. “We found our tribe,” Tiphanee says matter-of-factly, adding that it was relatively easy. “It’s so diverse and open and accepting in the mountains that no matter what age you are, what religion you are and no matter what you do for work, people show respect for each other.” The couple both feel there is a common ethos here. “People seem more in tune with their essence. Many are following their passions and being creative. The majority aren’t stuck on the nine-to-five treadmill like many Sydneysiders,” Kylie explains. “Those choosing to live here tend to be grounded; the spirituality of the landscape has a profound nurturing affect. There’s no room for superficiality; the beauty and energy of the landscape is humbling.” Grounded they may be, but definitely not static. “There’s so much to do in the local LGBTIQ community that our calendar is more full now than when we were in Sydney,” says Tiphanee.
Being busy doesn’t equate to stress, though, because of the ease of participation and getting to events like the lesbian Stitch & Bitch sewing circle, Bush Lemons walking group and the mountain chapter of the Queer Screen Film Festival, where Tiphanee sits on the board. “You can afford to do more things recreationally because you have the luxury of time, and there’s greater opportunity to get involved,” says Tiphanee. Both women volunteer in varied fields including search and rescue, as part of LGBTIQ healthcare group ACON and with IDAHOT (International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia), and they plan to add animal welfare and refugee support to this impressive portfolio. “It’s really refreshing for me personally that I haven’t come across a lot of judgement or competition. There’s a genuine, authentic network that connects people here. Your success, or anyone’s success, is not a threat or intimidating. People have really interesting stories to tell and they are interested in your story, too,” says Kylie. “We can’t think of anywhere else we’d rather be right now,” she adds. “There’s just something magnetic about this mountain – as soon as you start heading up, your shoulders drop and you can breathe again.” BML 25
Moving to the Blue Mountains prompted career changes for both Kylie and Tiphanee:
I’m discovering beautiful, “majestic places every week. I have absolutely fallen in love
“
with the mountains.
26
Kylie is launching a new range of Blue Mountainsinspired soft furnishings, including scatter cushions and wall art, through her interior design business – Belle Abode Interiors. Kylie is working with local artisans and using natural, ethically manufactured fabrics and fibres to promote their goods and services. “I’ve been taking photos, drawing and designing, and am inspired to promote the region because there is so much inspiration here in nature,” she says. belleabodeinteriors.com.au Tiphanee says she fell into teaching family history at Nepean Community College through her client work at Branches of Time. She is currently working on exploring how constellation genealogy and dealing with generational dysfunction can be used in healing therapies. TRUE LOVE
Kate Phil AND
HARTLEY VALE
THE ROMANCE OF TRAVEL AND TRADITION INSPIRED KATE AND PHIL’S RUSTIC WEDDING.
When stargazing lovers Kate Mirabito and Philip Shaw met at the end of high school in 2004, Phil swept Kate off her feet with his knowledge of the constellations. Ten years later, during a whirlwind European trip, it was Mozart at midnight that prompted Phil to pop the question. “We had been to a dinner performance and were walking back to our hotel, through the empty cobblestoned streets of Salzburg, when Phil proposed at the foot of the famous Residenzplatz Fountain,” Kate remembers. Of course, her answer was “Yes”. The couple, who live in the Sydney suburb of Gladesville, soon started planning their big day. “We knew we would marry somewhere other than Sydney but didn’t want our guests to have to travel excessively to attend. The Blue Mountains seemed a good fit – it’s perfect for a weekend away or a day trip from Sydney,” says Phil. “We discovered Collits Inn online and scheduled a visit. It was the first and only venue we saw, and we knew straight away it was exactly what we were after.”
28
29
“Blown away” by the stunning rural location, picturesque Blue Mountains setting and native Australian flora, the pair booked the venue that very same day. Six months later, a quaint civil ceremony was held on the property’s grounds under a pair of shimmering eucalypts, with that beautiful mountain backdrop. After the nuptials, 95 guests gathered in the DIY-styled barn for a joyous celebration that lasted well into the night. Kate took inspiration from the barn – the centrepiece of the property – by keeping styling simple and personal. “I sourced vintage lace doilies from op shops that I sewed into bunting and hung between pillars in the barn. Mum crocheted 150 white-lace hearts that we strung amid fairy lights, creating a magical, romantic ceiling for our guests to dine under,” she says. “We also used the hearts as the backdrop to our vows, hanging them from the arbour under the gum trees.”
30
31
first decision I made “Theas soon as Phil and I were engaged was to wear
“
Mum’s wedding dress.
32
The day before the wedding, both families gathered in the barn to help decorate. “Cheryl and Chris from Collits Inn were extremely accommodating, letting us take over the barn. It meant so much to us that we could have our families involved in the preparation,” Kate says. Handmade candles decorated each table and other Collits Inn props included old suitcases, bundles of books, vintage teacups, tree stumps and old farm machinery. “The hessian and lace tablecloths, flickering candles and soft baby’s breath helped create the perfect vintage theme in the rustic barn,” Kate recalls. Onsite catering by Collits Inn owner Chris Warren included locally sourced, seasonal produce. “It was a hearty, homecooked meal,” says Kate, “Each course was presented on self-serve platters, creating a truly convivial atmosphere.” In a nod to heritage, the seating plan was designed in the shape of Italy (where Kate’s father was born) and each table given the name of an Italian city Phil and Kate had visited during their travels. “Our bridal table, just for the two of us, was named Florence – our favourite city,” adds Kate.
33
34

Kate’s dress had special meaning, too: “The first decision I made as soon as Phil and I were engaged was to wear Mum’s wedding dress. I never even considered the possibility of another option. I wore the dress exactly as my mum did 32 years prior, without any changes to the design or style. It only required minor alterations – refitting the bodice and replacing the original exposed zipper down the back with an invisible zipper and pearl buttons. Wearing the dress made the day even more special and created a bond between my mother and I that we will always have.” Kate’s bridal bouquet was decorated with heirlooms passed down from both families, including the original wax beads that had adorned Kate’s great-grandmother’s wedding headpiece, and a gold-and-diamond necklace that belonged to Phil’s great-grandmother, who was married in 1915. “I love that we had so many personal touches incorporated throughout the day that held importance to Phil and I, and our story,” says Kate. “During the reception, we took a moment to ourselves and stood back to watch our family and friends dancing and celebrating in the barn. We were miles from anywhere else – it was just us and our loved ones in our own little world in Hartley Vale.” BML

TRUE LOVE
Javane AND Tyson
WENTWORTH FALLS
WHEN GUESTS ARRIVED TO CELEBRATE JAVANE AND TYSON’S ENGAGEMENT, THEY WERE IN FOR A WONDERFUL SURPRISE.
It was instant love for Javane Hiko and Tyson Tofaeono, who met at high school back in 2005. “Tyson was in the year below me and we met through mutual friends,” Javane recalls. “After two weeks of getting to know each other, we began dating.” Eleven years and two daughters later, Tyson proposed during a family outing to Wentworth Falls. “It was February 2016 and I was celebrating my 27th birthday with Tyson and our children, Tehya and Tahlia-Jane,” says Javane. “We did the four-hour walking circuit at Wentworth Falls and had a picnic at the base of the waterfall. At the end of our trek, Tyson produced my engagement ring – it’s safe to say it has been my most favourite birthday so far.” Even though the family lives in Cambridge Gardens, in the City of Penrith region, Javane and Tyson chose to celebrate their love in the Blue Mountains. “When planning any celebrations we would normally think of the city, but with the Blue Mountains practically on our doorstep it made sense to think about it as a location for our wedding,” Javane explains. 37
At the end of our trek, “Tyson produced my engagement ring – it’s safe to say it has been my most favourite

birthday so far.
After researching possible sites online and liaising with their celebrant, Tina Marie Sheil, the couple decided on Wentworth Falls Lake. “I love the natural beauty of the area, and the jetty on the lake is a bonus. With a drive time of just 55 minutes from Penrith, it was also easily accessible for our families,” Javane adds. Wanting to keep their wedding ceremony intimate, Javane and Tyson invited 19 immediate family members. Tehya and Tahlia-Jane were the bridesmaids, flower girls and ring bearers, while Javane’s mother Vanessa and Tyson’s mother Shona were witnesses. “We were married on the 13th of September, our anniversary,” says Javane. “It was a non-denominational ceremony conducted by our lovely celebrant on the jetty at the lake. The location was perfect and secluded, with a breathtaking vista that provided many photo opportunities. And we had the people that mean the most to us standing beside us, sharing our special day.” After the ceremony, the family headed to a holiday house in Katoomba. “It was a secluded, well-appointed house on the side of the mountain. There was no TV but we had a surplus of board games, and we spent our days exploring the local countryside and dining at local eateries,” says Javane. “It was a cosy start to married life for our family.” Four days later, Javane and Tyson arrived at the Henry Sports Club in Werrington County to join 90 friends and family members, who thought they were there to celebrate the couple’s engagement. “During the night we ran a slideshow, which incorporated our wedding day in the Blue Mountains,” says Javane. “Needless to say, everyone was shocked and happily surprised by our reveal – our engagement party then became our wedding reception.” DJ Phono played rhythm and blues, which got everyone onto the dance floor, and guests dined on cocktail appetisers and gourmet platters prepared by the club’s kitchen team. “We finished with a very decadent ‘Chocolate Explosion’ cake,” says Javane. “I love that it was all so stress-free.” BML

TRUE LOVE
Elizabeth AND Richard MUDGEE
LOCAL BUSINESSWOMAN AND ARTS IDENTITY, ELIZABETH WALTON, LITERALLY MOVED MOUNTAINS TO MARRY MUDGEE MAN, RICHARD LAWSON.
Reformed punk rocker turned olive grower Richard Lawson met his media-savvy, Sydney Conservatoriumtrained bride, Elizabeth (Liz) Walton, while reviving a folk festival. Mixing musical genres and career changes, their relationship blossomed with long rambling walks in Blue Mountains gardens and a shared love of drumming. It wasn’t long before they were planning an autumn wedding and looking for a suitable venue to exchange vows and celebrate their union. “The Catholic church wouldn’t have us as Richard was formerly divorced,” Liz explains. “So we turned to the Uniting Church, where we were teaching music in the church hall. “Reverend Graeme Gardiner [now located at Springwood Uniting Church with his wife, Reverend Leigh Gardiner] was an absolute godsend, pardon the pun. Neither of us is religious in a conventional sense, though spiritual practices are important to us both. Music, yoga, respect for the land and pagan traditions are closer to our hearts, and Reverend Graeme fully embraced this.” 43
The “eclectic” ceremony was staged with the practised hand of industry professionals incorporating pagan and ethnic elements. Master drummer Damion Stirling performed African drumming to bless the church, and a crystal circle was arranged before the altar for the couple to stand inside while taking their vows. After the ceremony, Richard’s students, a group of high school-aged boys in drumming corp uniform, drummed the guests into the hall, then formed a line in front of the wedding party’s table and held a drum roll. “The wedding party was waiting inside the hall, and during the drum roll we entered the room through a small door behind the wedding table,” says Liz.
“The dress was handmade in the US then restitched and fitted locally by Lorna McKenzie, from The Tailor’s Apprentice in Hazelbrook, as a wedding present. She also fitted and restitched Richard’s amazing coat,” Liz adds. Richard’s wool jacket was handmade by an American Civil War clothier in the US – it was tailored with Austrian knots on the sleeves to resemble the style of a Civil War bandleader. His red shirt was handmade in London, as was Brownie’s (the Best Man). Similarly, the bridesmaids’ dresses were tailored offshore and included corsetry and starched mini hoops.
The theatrics didn’t stop there. “Cloth, dress and formality are important to us, so we chose a steampunk theme for our wedding because of the amazing opportunity to wear such formal, dramatic, olde-worlde styles,” Liz explains.
Styling the church hall became a labour of love for Liz and her friends. “Because we were working at the church, teaching music several days a week, we had a lot of time to work on decorations,” she says. “We layered the ceiling with wire and kilometres of burgundy tulle embellished with handmade crystal chandelier drops, then added fairy lights. The ceiling took over a month to prepare.”
Liz’s dress was an 18th century-style ‘à la polonaise’ gown that featured a burgundy and ivory layer over a burgundy silk underlay. The fullness of the gown was created by matching corsetry, with long hoops that were handmade in Tasmania.
Josie, Liz’s daughter, made 1000 ruby coloured paper cranes, which were placed inside glass goblets on the tables for guests to take home. Mudgee-based artist Sam Paine painted the backdrop for the band as a wedding present.
44
The 100 guests at the reception were treated to an evening of live music played by Bathurst band Sweet Jelly Rolls, a folky bluegrass duo “with a wicked sense of humour” that played in the courtyard during drinks, along with Squeeze Box Trio, a young quartet from the Penrith region who play gypsy swing, and Honey – Liz and Richard’s own band. “To finish the evening, all the drums from our music school upstairs at the church were brought down, and Rich, Damian and I kicked off the first drum set. Then all of the other musicians and guests joined in,” says Liz. “The live music continued back at our house well into Sunday afternoon.” Liz recalls the joy that bringing all of their friends and family from the Blue Mountains and Mudgee together gave her: “Walking into the hall when it was full of all our loved ones, after working on the room for so long, was just amazing – I hadn’t realised how beautiful it would look and how touching it would be to have all of our dear friends and family together in one space, sitting underneath the crystals and the soft lights. That they were there to welcome Rich and I being together was really what it was all about.” And Richard’s most memorable moment from the day? “My wife as she looked at me during the vows… Love!” BML

Liz and Richard struggled with the notion of changing names after they married. “It seems archaic when your career and profile are well established,” says Liz. “Richard offered to change his name and, being musicians, we had a few hilarious road trips inventing new surnames, such as ‘Mr & Mrs 1812 Overture’ (to be played, rather than spoken). Mr & Mrs Bob Marley was another favourite. Our minister was very kind and understood the complexities entirely. “It’s a question of identity,” he told us during our preparation meetings. “You might spend the rest of your life figuring out how you want to respond to the idea of name changes.”

CLOTHES MAY MAKETH THE MAN BUT WHAT KEEPETH THE LATEST FASHION ACCESSORY, FACIAL HAIR, FROM COMING OVER ALL CAVE-DWELLER?
Of course, it’s nothing new. Men were preening and pimping their pompadours and goatees long before the metro-bushranger look was ever a thing. Styles may come and go but one thing is certain, good grooming never goes out of fashion. Con Kazantzidis from Lithgow’s Shave the Man, aka The Stray Whisker brand, says there’s a worldwide resurgence in men’s traditional grooming practices, including wet shaving – using a double-edged blade and old-style razor with real shave soap and a brush. “Many men are spending more time on themselves, and are being rewarded with a better shave and great-looking skin,” he explains. If that’s not enough incentive to go old school, Con says giving up disposable razors and cans of pressurised shave goo is a good move for the environment.
62
Tim Maybury (second from left) with his groomsmen. Photo: Elleni Toumpas – Wedding Photography.
Con’s online store offers local and imported products to aid this trend. “We’re not about getting rid of beards, just about better grooming. Our motto is, ‘Shave it off or keep it nice’. We’ve helped guys get beyond the annoying itches and beard dandruff [yes, it’s a thing!] so they can achieve ultimate-hipster or bushranger status,” he says. WEDDING SESSIONS The idea of offering men’s wedding sessions came to Con when planning a farmer’s wedding. “Tim Maybury [the farmer] was already into traditional wet shaving and I had been speaking to him about the benefits, both financial and skin health, about 12 months prior to his big day,” he says. Tim became obsessed, devouring all 70 or so videos on the Shave the Man YouTube channel. “There was no hard sell – he was hooked,” says Con. “So, when he decided to propose to his now lovely wife Annah, he thought it would be great to have all ‘the blokes’ in the wedding party set up with a wet-shaving starter kit and a brief how-to session.” The sessions include two hours of information, hands-on training and a great swag to get blokes started in the world of traditional wet shaving. “We feel it’s best experienced
as a buck’s weekend or groomsmen ‘bonding’ experience. A week or so out is probably best, as they will have their technique honed for the wedding-day shave,” Con adds. BML

THE MERCURIAL
Ms. Moss THE MOUNTAINS’ MOST BEGUILING AND MULTI-FACETED DENIZEN, TARA MOSS DEFIES LABELS TO CALL OUT INJUSTICE, EMPOWER THE MARGINALISED AND INDULGE HER PASSION FOR COSPLAY. HERE SHE DISCUSSES MOUNTAIN LIFE, MARRIAGE AND CORSETRY.
How long have you called the Blue Mountains home and what drew you here? I began visiting the Blue Mountains in the late 1990s and wrote much of my first two crime novels, Fetish and Split, at guesthouses in Katoomba and Leura. I married my husband, writer and poet Berndt Sellheim, in 2009 and we moved to the mountains the same year. We love it here and it’s the perfect writing hideaway. When and how did you become interested in Victoriana and mid-century fashion? I’m interested in history, with a specific focus on the Victorian era of 1837 to 1901 and the 1940s and 1950s during WWII, and the immediate post-war period that followed. These were dynamic times for social and cultural 75
change, inventions, sciences, textiles and design and the arts. These are the two periods that interest me most in terms of history, as well as objects, furniture, ephemera, costume and dress. It isn’t so easy to get about in Victorian garb these days, but I do enjoy steampunk cosplay as I can wear Victorian clothing but can also do things most Victorian women couldn’t do at the time. Part of the delight of playing with time periods is to subvert aspects of that history. In my usual, day-to-day dress I tend to wear mid-century vintage. It’s beautiful, sustainable, affordable and built to last. When and why did you start sewing lessons? I decided to learn to sew in early 2016, and started taking lessons with Lorna McKenzie from The Tailor’s Apprentice. I like her focus on historical garments and methods, and when my schedule allows it, I like to have one lesson with Lorna each week to stay on top of my learning. She has guided me through several sewing projects, including some of my cosplay. She is patient, positive and knowledgeable, and she shares my obsession with historical dress. I’m learning to sew in part to be able to mend and care for my vintage clothing, and I was recently announced as the Australian Sewing Guild’s Patron to promote sewing, mending and personalised ‘slow clothing’. There is a wonderful small-business aspect of the vintage and retro scene, with enthusiasts hunting down and salvaging beautiful things from the past, or sewing reproductions in their living rooms.
I don’t believe the personal “opinions or religious beliefs of politicians should impact the rights for adult citizens to have
“
equal access to marriage. 76
How have corsets become more than an extension of your interest in historical or fantasy fashion? I have always been interested in corsets, but I didn’t wear them more than once or twice a year until recently. Just over a year ago I discovered by chance that wearing a corset for a few hours while writing relieved my back pain and headaches. I have scoliosis, so this kind of pain has been present throughout my life to one degree or another, and I have tried many types of treatments and physio. Now I wear a custom under-bust corset, fitted comfortably to my measurements, a few days a week, usually in the middle of the day or when commuting or carrying suitcases, and I do this in addition to my usual back exercises and stretches. I have been able to get rid of the painkillers almost completely. Corsets have really revolutionised my life in positive ways. You’ve adopted a couple of pseudonyms or alter egos – Victory Lamour and The Tight-laced Time Traveller. Can you tell us about them? The Tight-laced Time Traveller is my steamsona – a timetravelling writer and mum, Baroness Steele, about to fly in on her dirigible and save the world or report on despotic otherworldly regimes. She can handle herself and has been seen with a weapon or two, but ultimately believes the pen is mightier than the sword. Victory Lamour is my vintage pin-up persona, and my way of separating my journalism as Tara Moss from my vintage-focussed hobby, research and work. At victorylamour.com I write on vintage, beauty, body positivity, sustainable style and sewing. At taramoss.com I focus on human rights, women’s rights and representation, child safety, online abuse, my books and more. What’s the appeal of cosplay for you? When I was a kid we had a ‘tickle trunk’, as it was called, filled with makeshift costumes, so perhaps it’s in the genes. Dressing up is a wonderful form of play and one we enjoy as a family. Now that I have a daughter of my own I want her to enjoy that. The Blue Mountains community loves a good dress-up – do you join in the fun at local historical or community festivals? I judged the best-dressed competition at Lady Luck one year and we’ve attended Ironfest as a family three times. Community events of this quality are loads of fun. The whole town comes together with enthusiasts from around the country.
77

What do you think of the notion that getting married is a form of cosplay?
What do you think are the most important aspects of a modern marriage? Respect, communication and dedication.
Cosplay can be widely interpreted, and all formal dressing and fashion can be a form of self-expression through clothing, a form of play, but of course the main and vital difference is that with cosplay you are role-playing, and with marriage it is real-life and legally binding. Describe your wedding day. I wore a red, custom-made Alex Perry dress and Berndt wore a tux and skull bowtie, and we were married in a rose garden. It was a beautiful day for us, surrounded by friends. My dress was like red roses.
78
What’s your take on the marriage-equality debate, and why is it so hard for politicians to reconcile public opinion with legislation? I find it really frustrating that marriage equality is taking so long in Australia. Australians now overwhelmingly agree that marriage equality is overdue, with 70 per cent support for same-sex marriage in the general public. I don’t believe the personal opinions or religious beliefs of politicians should impact the rights for adult citizens to have equal access to marriage. They are meant to represent the people. Law-abiding, consenting adults should not be barred from marriage because of their sexual orientation. Those decisions should be up to the couple, not the state. It’s madness, and this is part of a long history of denying the LGBTIQ community the rights afforded to straight, cisgender people. BML

Creating the ripple effect The Blue Mountains Regional Business Chamber’s vision is to build a vibrant and engaged business community. Peita Davies, President of the Chamber, outlined that “a lift in 10 small businesses’ performance creates a ripple effect that will lift 30 small businesses”. This ideology was the key to the Chamber throwing its support and encouragement behind Just Pressed as a start-up business. “The Chamber was very excited by the concept of Blue Mountains Love magazine, as it dovetailed with one of our key initiatives, to grow the marriage industry within the mountains,” she said. The Regional Business Chamber has prepared a Marriage on the Mountain Famil for February 2017, to coincide with the launch of Blue Mountains Love. The Famil is designed to showcase the traditional marriage industry that exists within the mountains to lifestyle media. Big business in the region is engaged and is generously donating resources to ensure the success of this venture.
Kicking goals Over the past year the Blue Mountains Regional Business Chamber has enjoyed a number of achievements, including: • Launching Pink Business • Delivering the 9th Annual Business Expo, with 45 exhibiting organisations • Producing the 10th Annual Business Awards program • Implementing an industry partnership with TAFE WSi Further information on the Chamber’s business development program is available at www.bmchamber.com.au, or call 0413 957 591.

A STITCH IN YOU DON’T HAVE TO BE TARA MOSS TO INDULGE IN A LITTLE FANTASY DRESSING. LOCAL SEAMSTRESS LORNA MCKENZIE, FROM THE TAILOR’S APPRENTICE, CAN TEACH YOU HOW TO MAKE YOUR OWN HISTORICAL FASHION OR WEDDING DRESS. Lorna McKenzie is a time traveller. She doesn’t have a Tardis or some H.G. Wells-type contraption to propel her through the ages – although she’d love to give either a go. Rather, she is stitching up history one gown at a time. As a bespoke seamstress, Lorna teaches sewing using historical techniques, specialising in steampunk, vintage, ’20s, ’40s, WWII, Edwardian, Victorian and Regency styles. A love of historical sewing was cultivated in high school textile and design, and later in university English classes. “Learning the history of fashion at school really piqued my interest when I was a young girl, as did reading lots of 19th-century novels at uni,” Lorna recalls. And it seems sewing is in her blood. “My mother and grandmother were both dressmakers. Indeed, my mother kept our family afloat with dressmaking. I just adore fabric. I love taking a flat object and turning it into a 3D garment,” she says. The Internet brought Lorna closer to a world of people working with and enjoying historical fashion.“I found I could connect with groups all around the globe, like the Society for Creative Anachronists, Jane Austen revivalists and rockabilly girls right here in the Blue Mountains.” “The most fascinating thing about historical sewing is that when you make something in the style, of the period and the way a woman would have sewn back in the day, you are time travelling,” she says. 80
time And if she could actually time travel? “I’ve always loved the 19th century, so I would probably go back to the Regency period because it was a time of such ferment and change, particularly due to the French Revolution,” Lorna reveals. Mass beheadings aside, Lorna points out that fashion also got the chop, going from expensive court dresses made of silks and satins, with side paniers and high hair, to suddenly adopting the dress of a simple country maiden. “Mind you, I’d probably get marched to the guillotine for my outspokenness,” she adds. Another of Lorna’s passion projects has been the creation of WWI Australian Nurses Army Service uniforms. “I created the uniform patterns to ensure that the women who saved so many lives and helped many an ANZAC could be remembered by re-enactors during the Centenary of WWI,” she says. Lorna also accepts bridal commissions. “I do about two or three commissions for brides or bridesmaids a year [recently married Michele Lelly is pictured right with her daughter and bridesmaid, Ellora Tibbets],” she explains. “I prefer to work with a bride, or with a bride’s mother, to help them make the gown themselves. People often buy very expensive fabric and it makes them nervous to go it alone because they are not as skilled as they’d like to be. I do the complicated bits, and they get to make their own gown.” Handmade doesn’t mean cheap, though. “It costs as much as it would to buy an off-the-shelf gown but it is bespoke – it fits them perfectly, gives them a sense of achievement and ownership, and is exactly what they wanted.” BML thetailorsapprentice.com

DESCRIBED AS ‘AIRBNB FOR WEDDING VENUES’, WEDSHED IS THE BRAINCHILD OF AMY PARFETT AND MELANY MCBRIDE, A COUPLE OF GALS DETERMINED TO PUT THE SOUL BACK INTO RECEPTION VENUES. THEY TOOK TIME OUT FROM SCOURING FARMYARDS AROUND THE COUNTRY TO TALK BARN APPEAL.
What led you to start WedShed? Amy We first realised that the process of finding unique and personal wedding venues was really tricky while searching online one night a few years ago for a newly engaged girlfriend. The same traditional, soulless venues kept cropping up, and after exhausting the most logical (and random) search terms and still digging up no gold, we felt deflated and discouraged. It sucked to be of no use to our friend and we could only imagine how frustrated she must have been. Mel We knew there had to be more amazing spaces out there, and that there must be plenty of venue owners who wanted an easier way to connect with couples. We don’t remember if it was the same night or another one (all we remember is there was wine involved, as with all good ideas) when we realised someone needed to bridge this gap for couples, and that it should be us. Fast-forward several years, and here we are. 83
What are the key ingredients for a great wedding venue? Amy We’ve learned through this journey that while choosing a wedding venue is hugely personal, there are a few things many of our favourite venues all have in common. These key ingredients include the flexibility to make the space what you want it to be – for example, to style it in a way that reflects your personal tastes and interests, the ability to work with vendors you love and a great view and connection with the surrounding landscape.
Mel Aside from the nostalgia of a shed, there’s generally more flexibility (the F-word – we drop it often, as you might have noticed). Farm sheds in particular generally won’t have specific ‘bump in and out’ times, as they’re on private properties with owners that can give you a more personal service. And given that most of our shed venues are set outside main cities, it means your wedding helps support local business by bringing tourism dollars to the surrounding region. That is a really good feeling, for us and our couples. What is special about getting married in the Blue Mountains?
Mel You know what they say about walking into a house and knowing if it could be a ‘home’? We think you also get that feeling when you’re looking at venues – some just get you excited. Go with your gut. What is particularly appealing about ‘sheds’?
Amy This will sound silly, but the mountains themselves are the most special thing to us about getting hitched here. The way they change colour throughout the day and the views they allow. Also, the lovely people who have made their livelihood in the Blue Mountains make it a warm and welcoming place to be married. BML
Amy There’s just something so exciting to us about taking a fairly basic structure and transforming it into something seriously beautiful that delights your guests. We’re suckers for a good blank canvas and there’s a certain Australiana romance to knowing you’re celebrating your big day in a space that once served as a farm workspace (or may still be serving, in fact).

top tips
USE GOOGLE CREATIVELY. Try typing the name of the region you’re considering getting married in with the word ‘wedding’ next to it, and then head straight to the Google images tab. Often this will lead you to local photographers’ blogs, where you may find some lesser-known venues.
SET A TENTATIVE BUDGET. We use the word ‘tentative’ because we understand budget blow-out is a contagious condition that affects all couples, but this will help you to shortlist venues. D ECIDE HOW HANDS-ON YOU WANT TO BE. Some venues – particularly the blank-canvas ones – require you to coordinate everything. This is awesome if you have a strong vision for how you want the day to look and can get organised. Other venues will have 84
FOR VENUE HUNTING
their own in-house wedding manager, who can help you out along the way. Note: don’t let the blank-canvas venues alarm you – you can always hire a wedding planner or coordinator to help you. IF YOU KNOW THE REGION YOU WANT TO GET MARRIED IN, CHECK OUT WHAT’S ON BEFORE SETTING THE DATE. You’ll want to avoid major events as there may be a shortage of accommodation for your guests. Check out lots of wedding blogs – and we might be able to help you out, too. We’ve got hundreds of unique properties around Australia that lend themselves perfectly to weddings. wedshed.com.au

THE RUSSET TONES AND BROODING CALM OF LATE AUTUMN AT LEURA’S EVERGLADES HOUSE & GARDENS SET THE STAGE FOR THE TIMELESS ELEGANCE OF THIS STYLED SHOOT BY ANYA OSTAPENKO.
87
Set over five hectares of European gardens, with magnificent bush views over the Jamieson valley, Leura’s Art Deco Everglades House & Gardens is a world-renowned National Trust property. The evocative winding paths, dry stone walls and seasonal English plantings are features that draw Anya Ostapenko to the Blue Mountains each autumn. “There’s a certain feeling of nature going to rest, of getting ready for winter, that reminds me of Europe and its distinctly defined four seasons,” says Anya, designer and stylist at Bride La Boheme in Sydney. Anya specifically styled the autumn shoot with sultry, redhaired model Jemma Hensen in mind. To complement Jemma’s piercing blue eyes, makeup artist Niki Simpson used copper and rust-toned eyeshadows, finishing with smoky chocolate-brown shadow along the upper and lower lashes. Barely there, peach-nude matte lipstick was patted 88
into the lips, with Niki creating soft, natural waves to frame Jemma’s face and complete the look. A feeling of bohemian romance is evoked in the delicate lace fabrics, softness and sheen of the modern yet timeless gowns from Sydney bridal boutiques White Meadow Bridal, Hope X Page and Georgia Young Couture. The gowns are complemented by Anya’s vintage and boho-inspired hair accessories, veils, capes and sashes, all of which are individually handcrafted at Bride La Boheme. Sydney floral artists, Boutierre Girls, also took their cue from autumnal foliage in the garden, incorporating Japanese maple leaves into Jemma’s bouquet. “The dreamy, moody feel of the shoot, combined with mottled shade and colour in the garden, make it nostalgic and everlasting,” adds Anya. ESCAPE
slice OF paradise
A
LOOKING FOR THE ULTIMATE HEN’S PARTY VENUE? THEN GATHER YOUR GIRLFRIENDS AND BOOK IN WITH BLUE MOUNTAINS GIRLS GETAWAYS, WHICH HAS TRANSFORMED THE AVERAGE WEEKEND AWAY INTO AN OPPORTUNITY TO LUXURIATE IN STYLE.
Back in 2000, Nicky Vaux noticed a gaping hole in the Blue Mountains accommodation market. “I saw the need for a little more luxury in the self-contained market – no girl wants to wash her sheets when she gets home from a break, and driving home from a massage defeats the purpose,” she explains. By the end of that same year, Nicky launched Blue Mountains Girls Getaways. “We opened in Blackheath with one little cottage that had a studio for massages,” she says. “Within a year we expanded to include a second, larger house for bigger groups. Now we have two large properties in the Upper Mountains – Lavender Manor, in Blackheath, and Lavender Majestic, in Katoomba. We also have a property in Mollymook, on the south coast, for clients wanting a beach venue.”
91
As the business has grown, so have the options for guests. Girls looking for the ultimate escape can now choose from a range of packages that include one-night stays, gourmet experiences, horseriding, winery visits and hen’s party weekends. Some of the packages on offer at Lavender Majestic even include a full-time butler. “This is a unique offering that allows our girls to enjoy a true break,” says Nicky. “Who doesn’t like being handed a robe as they exit the spa, or having their bed turned down in the evening? And who doesn’t like having a delicious breakfast cooked for them?” With a background in hospitality and catering at five-star Sydney and London hotels, along with training in beauty therapy, Nicky understands the importance of providing a beautiful environment and going above and beyond for guests – her aim is for her properties to be known as the very best girls’ getaway venues in Australia. “We are a small business that can adapt to the specific needs of our guests, and we like everyone to feel special,” she says. “Our beds are super comfy and our attention to detail brings delight – from our pre-arrival emails with tips on what to do in the area to the complementary umbrellas, everything has been thought about with love and care.”
According to Nicky, the feature that makes her properties so perfect for hen’s weekends and getting away from it all with your girlfriends is the exclusivity. “Our properties are private for the groups that book them and, as such, many of our girls check in, pop on their fluffy bathrobe and pretty much remain like that for the weekend,” she says. “They hang out, enjoy the spa, drink wine, relax in front of the fire and have a massage onsite.” Playing games also tends to be a popular activity. “It’s a way for guests to have a good giggle in the privacy of their own space,” Nicky adds. “Making a wedding gown out of toilet paper is one of the best games I’ve seen so far.” As Nicky says, just being able to enjoy the region’s natural beauty is a treat for guests who live in the city. “The Blue Mountains is a very special place – it’s not only magnificently beautiful and full of fabulous restaurants, cafés and boutiques but it has an energy, an intangible feeling, that makes you feel refreshed and rejuvenated,” she adds. “It’s a completely different feel to Sydney but its close proximity makes it the perfect short-break destination. Since girls rarely have a lot of time up their sleeves to escape, this is imperative.” BML
hen’s weekend
THE EXTRAVAGANT ESCAPE: Available all year round (except on long weekends), this two-night weekend package is for 4-6 girls at Lavender Majestic and kicks off with a stretchlimousine ride from Sydney to the Blue Mountains, with Champagne included. During your stay, you will enjoy a delicious cooked breakfast each morning, an abundance of gifts, dinner at a local restaurant on Friday night, a three-course dinner onsite on Saturday night, a guided walk and a guided shopping tour in Leura. Your full-time butler will ensure all your needs are catered to. HEN’S WEEKEND ESCAPE: Designed for a minimum of 8 girls, this one-night package is held at Lavender Manor (on week nights only during winter). It includes a gift hamper on arrival, an onsite back massage or mini facial for each guest, plus chocolates and bath treats. 92

If you book in at Lavender Majestic, you will also have a full-time butler. OPTIONAL EXTRAS: Nicky can organise a range of activities for your hen’s weekend – choose from a ghost tour with Blue Mountains Mystery Tours, wine tasting at Dryridge Estate, horseriding, candle parties, psychic readings and an onsite shopping experience with Tickle & Delight, which specialises in intimate lifestyle products. bmgg.com.au

LOCAL HOTSPOTS GOVETTS LEAP LOOKOUT in Blackheath is my favourite lookout. I can still remember the first time I went there some 25 years ago – it literally took my breath away. THIS LITTLE PIGGY WIGGY DELI, also in Blackheath, is a feast for the eyes and the tastebuds – it’s just pure delight. Owner Sharyn Bagios organises special events for us here and at her lifestyle store, Cabin & Co. DRYRIDGE ESTATE in Megalong Valley has to be one of the most picturesque cellar doors I have ever been to. Owner Emma MacMahon is a delightful host, and the wines and cheese platters are fabulous. Our Summer Serendipity Package includes a visit here. EUROKA HOMESTEAD offers a great horseriding tour that includes a visit to Dryridge Estate. It’s a very lovely way to explore Megalong Valley. BLUE MIST CAFÉ in Wentworth Falls is my favourite brekkie destination. Owner Alan Brown’s dry sense of humour gets you going for the day. AVALON RESTAURANT is our favourite restaurant in Katoomba – I adore the quirky fit-out and eclectic crockery, and the deliciously consistent food is so comforting.
Photos (from top): Dryridge Estate, Leura Cascades (courtesy Ask Roz Blue Mountains), Teddy Sinclair, This Little Piggy Wiggy Deli.
STATION BAR in Katoomba serves sensational wood-fired pizzas and awesome cocktails, and is a really fun night out. It’s walking distance to our Lavender Majestic venue, so our guests can enjoy as many cocktails as they like. LEURA CASCADES is great for walking. It’s not a big or challenging walk but it’s such a beautiful spot. SHOPPING IN LEURA & BLACKHEATH is a treat. Teddy Sinclair, Cat’s Meow and iKOU in Leura are favourites, as are Cabin & Co and Blackheath Boutique, in the heart of Blackheath. BLACKHEATH GROWERS’ MARKET, held on the second weekend of each month, is where you can meet many local farmers selling many delicious products. I love it! 93

SOMETHING OLD NINA LIPSCOMBE SHOWS US HOW HER MOTHER AND GRANDMOTHER CREATED THIS VINTAGE BROOCH, BUTTON & FLORAL BOUQUET. MADE USING THE SAME JEWELLERY NINA AND HER SISTER DRESSED UP WITH AS CHILDREN, THE BEAUTIFUL POSY WAS BROUGHT ACROSS THE WORLD FOR THE BRIDE’S BIG DAY. LEVEL OF DIFFICULTY: EASY/MEDIUM
1
YOU WILL NEED: Brooches/buttons/fake or paper fl owers, ribbons or lace, small square of hessian or fabric, fi ne wire, pliers, masking tape (optional), green fl oral tape, rubber bands, scissors, glue. 94
Pull wire through button. Stop when the wire is roughly divided in half, then thread it back through the hole twice more. Now twist wire around itself, all the way to the end.
2
Wrap masking tape around the wire stem to thicken it up (optional). Now wrap again with green floral tape.
4
Use rubber bands to secure the bouquet at both ends of the stem.
6
Add some vintage lace around the hessian. You can also tie ribbon around the centre.
3
Repeat this process with each brooch or button. Stem by stem, arrange your bouquet into shape, working from the centre out.
5
Create a sheath for the bouquet stems to slip into. Cut a piece of hessian or fabric to fit and secure with glue or sew by hand.
7
Create a boutonniĂŠre for your partner using the same technique. You can use a pearl-head pin to secure the fabric.

GLORIOUS GARDENS AND GREAT MIX OF CAFÉS, SHOPS AND GALLERIES
VICTORY THEATRE There’s something in the Blackheath air that draws creative folk from near and far. The village is home to an impressive number of artists – Rowen Matthews, Les Love, Ray Harrington, Leonie Lyall and Margaret Aalders all take their inspiration from the spectacular surrounds and are celebrated at local galleries. Fashion designer and artist Jenny Kee has long added her vibrancy to the village – her colourful mural can’t be missed as you enter Govetts Leap Road, and her signature waratah paintings are exhibited at Hat Hill Gallery. Creativity is also key to the success of local businesses. Set over two levels, Victory Theatre is a treasure trove – you’ll need a good hour to peruse the antique and vintage wares before taking a breather at the downstairs café.
GOVETTS LEAP LOOKOUT
CABIN & CO Across the road is Cabin & Co, where you’ll find designer fashion pieces amid furniture and homewares, along with Ravir Boutique, where natural fibres reign. Blackheath Interiors & Homewares is down the road, and Keith Rowe and Kayo Yokoyama’s Glass Gallery is on the highway. There are outstanding dining experiences to be had at the award-winning Ashcrofts Bistro, Escarpment and Vesta – fresh, seasonal cuisine is served up at all three. Meet Me At Matt’s is a favourite lunch destination, while the Gardners Inn offers hearty pub fare with a side of history – it’s the oldest licensed hotel in the Blue Mountains. Perhaps most impressive is Blackheath’s natural beauty. Head straight for Govetts Leap Lookout to soak up the magnificence of the Grose Valley and refresh your spirit. BML

BONBONNIERE
SPREADING THE
love
THESE DAYS, WEDDING FAVOURS CAN BE AS PERSONAL, HANDCRAFTED OR EXTRAVAGANT AS YOU DESIRE – AND THERE’S NOT A SUGARED ALMOND IN SIGHT.
Bonbonniere, or wedding favours, have been a part of wedding tradition since the Middle Ages, when the act of giving ‘favours’ to wedding guests was seen as passing on luck and prosperity from the happy couple. Traditional bonbonniere (known as ‘bomboniera’ in Italy) included five sugared almonds encased in paper, lace, glass or silver packages. The almonds symbolised five time-honoured wishes: happiness, longevity, wealth, children and health. A modern bonbonniere may eschew almonds for chocolate, macarons, fairy floss or even Nutella. And there’s a growing trend to ditch sweets altogether and instead gift personalised Champagne, matchbooks, tea and coffee, seeds or plants, toasting glasses or candles… The possibilities are endless. Wedding favours are also being incorporated into table decoration and wedding themes. Decorated with handwritten cards, flowers and vintage teaspoons, these petite jars of artisan-crafted jam from Princess Pantry, Cathy Armstrong’s award-winning Blackheath label, make a sweet wedding favour. Plenty of love to spread here. BML 99

“The overwhelming majority of Australians support marriage equality because they see the quality of love and commitment in a relationship does not depend on a couple’s gender. Hopefully our politicians will catch up very soon so same-sex couples can celebrate their love and commitment the same way as everyone else.”
