Renée Tilley discovered her love of herbs and their healing properties when studying for her Bachelor of Health Science (Naturopathy). There is very little Stephen Harris doesn’t know about quality menswear. Growing up in the beautiful islands of Tahiti, Brigitte Grant began learning the art of photography as a teenager. Since moving to Australia back in 1986, she has spent her time focusing on the vast beauty of the Blue Mountains and capturing special moments at weddings and fashion shoots. Spring in the Blue Mountains is nothing short of spectacular – local gardens burst with colour, blue skies abound as the days grow longer, vibrant street festivals bring the community together and couples come up with wonderful ways to celebrate their love. Our cover stars are a perfect example. Carrie & Brian are an adventurous Singaporean couple who travelled to the upper mountains to honour their engagement with a fabulous photo shoot (see their True Love story on page 20). We also had the pleasure of interviewing four other couples, all of whom have a passion for the region and were willing to share their thoughts on everything from finding the perfect venue and calling on family and friends for help to the value of including cultural references in wedding ceremonies and why marriage equality is so vitally important.

GLOW ON If you’re planning to be married in the warmer months, now is the time to start prepping your skin. Renée Tilley, creator of award-winning beauty brand Paudhã Healing, shares four tips that will have your whole body radiating with good health in the lead-up to your big day.

1. TASTE THE GOODNESS Eating a diet filled with fresh fruit and veggies and rich in essential nutrients such as Vitamins C and E will help to boost the antioxidant levels in your body, which aid in reducing the damage caused by free-radicals. CARRIE AND BRIAN NG OPTED FOR A REAL CLIFFHANGER OF AN ENGAGEMENT SHOOT ON THEIR TRIP TO THE BLUE MOUNTAINS.

When adrenalin junkies Carrie and Brian came to the Blue Mountains in 2016, they managed to tick off a bucket-list wish and their engagement shoot with effortless poise. The Singaporean pair, who met at a college outdoor interest group and have been together since they were aged 19, are passionate rock climbers who travel the world seeking adventure. “We love rock climbing and to be in the outdoors. Every year we travel to beautiful national parks or places close to nature to hike or rock climb,” explains Brian. “In 2015, we made our way to Yosemite National Park in California and did a three-day hike to Half Dome and Cloud Rest, where I proposed to Carrie. The Blue Mountains is a well-known climbing area in Australia and it became one of the climbing crags on our joint bucket list.”

Both born and raised in sunny Singapore, the healthcare and social-welfare professionals already had a connection to Australia and the mountains. “Brian had been to the Blue Mountains as a kid and remembered its beauty,” says Carrie. “Based on this, we decided we would fly to Australia to climb and to have our engagement photos taken.” Logistically, this could have been a nightmare but the intrepid pair had everything worked out in advance. “We found a trek that led to the top of the cliff, so we didn’t have to climb in our wedding outfits,” Carrie recalls.

Brian climbed in outdoor attire, then changed into a suit after getting up over the top of the cliff. He then tied himself back onto the rope and lowered his body off the edge for the money shot. Photographer Zoe Morley, who captured the action, says she was pre-warned of what was expected of her. “When Brian first emailed me, he asked me whether I liked adventure and the outdoors. I guess I shouldn’t have been too surprised when Carrie and Brian hooked me up to the side of a cliff and made me rock climb up it to get the shots they wanted,” she laughs. “I can’t say I have ever done an engagement shoot quite like that before.”

we decided we would fly to Australia to climb and to have our engagement photos taken.

Having travelled to the Blue Mountains with a large group of friends, the couple says they spent most of their twoweek trip climbing and visiting towns in the area. “On rest days we went to weekend markets in Leura, Lawson and Wentworth Falls, sipped coffee in Blackheath and Leura cafés, and visited some antique shops,” says Brian. The group stayed together in a large mountain villa they found on Airbnb and were lucky to have a yoga instructor among them. “While waiting for our laundry to be done, we cleared out the living room and made it our yoga studio,” says Brian. “Then, after a tiring day of rock climbing, we’d spend our evenings tasting local wines while putting steak on the grill.” On their return to Singapore, Carrie and Brian celebrated their love with a traditional Chinese wedding ceremony in the company of family and friends. They won’t be settling down any time soon, however – the now husband and wife are already hoping to include the Blue Mountains in their future adventures. “We love Australia for the pace of life and the abundance of good wine and fresh produce,” says Brian. “We would love to be back in the Blueys one day.” BML

AN APPLE ORCHARD IN FULL BLOOM PROVED AN UNEXPECTED BUT PERFECT SETTING FOR THE SPRINGTIME NUPTIALS OF SYDNEY PAIR ROWENA AND MATT.

Choosing a wedding venue can be difficult and hungry work. So when Rowena Doig and Matt Davy stumbled into Logan Brae Orchards during their venue hunt looking for food, they not only satisfied their appetites but also found the perfect spot to tie the knot. “We were out looking for wedding venues one Saturday with a family friend who lives in Blackheath and got hungry, so we stopped off at Logan Brae to grab an apple pie,” explains Matt. The beauty of the orchard and its stunning escarpment views completely won them over. That very day they booked in a date with the property’s owner, Sam Edwards.

The Woollahra couple, who met through mutual friends while holidaying in Byron Bay, had wanted a country wedding but realised the logistics of getting vendors and guests to travel great distances was beyond them, especially with their young baby in tow. The Blue Mountains proved closer to home and offered easier access for their friends and family travelling from overseas (Matt originally hails from the south coast of England). Vows were exchanged in a small and personal ceremony conducted under the blossom-laden bows of the apple trees. Guests held white parasols and the natural beauty of the orchard setting did the rest. “Every aspect of the day was styled by us,” says Rowena, who made her own flower crown and the pretty bridesmaids bouquets. “Although many grand plans fell short, it was simple and sweet nevertheless.”

Vows were exchanged in a small and personal ceremony conducted under the blossomladen bows of the apple trees. Guests held white parasols and the natural beauty of the setting did the rest. Rowena’s dreamy boho-style gown, from sustainable fashion label The Reformation, was finished off with brown suede lace-up boots. Her bridesmaids wore floral Tigerlily dresses. The couple’s good friend, wedding photographer Robert Meredith, summed up the mood of the celebration: “This was a day shorn of all stuffiness and tradition. Row, Matt and their bridal party spent a very chilled morning getting ready together, making the bouquets and sipping Pimm’s before making the short drive to Logan Brae.” 32

After some time spent time wandering the grounds and posing for a few relaxed portraits, the couple joined their guests for speeches as the sun set over the mountains.

Six-month-old baby Niamh featured front and centre, held in Matt’s arms throughout the ceremony – it’s a memory Rowena and Matt say they’ll cherish forever. Post ceremony, after some time spent time wandering the grounds and posing for a few relaxed portraits, the couple joined their guests for speeches as the sun set over the mountains. The festivities concluded with everyone dancing the night away to Sydney’s Press Club Band inside the intimate confines of the tipi. “We loved that our closest friends and family from Sydney and London were able to be there to share the day with us,” Rowena remembers fondly. EARLIER THIS YEAR, LEURA LOCALS BARRY JARROTT AND IAN FITCH CELEBRATED 22 YEARS AS A COUPLE. WE HAD A CHAT TO THE DYNAMIC PAIR AS THEY CLINKED GLASSES AND REFLECTED ON THEIR ENDURING LOVE AT KATOOMBA’S AVALON RESTAURANT. When Barry Jarrott met Ian Fitch in Sydney back in 1995, he was fobbed off twice before refusing to take no for an answer. “We were at the Imperial Hotel, in Erskineville, and we finally had a drink together,” Barry recalls. “I invited him for dinner at my place and we’ve been together ever since. I blame lamb.” Ian admits that it didn’t exactly appear to be love at first sight. “Barry had three goes at introducing himself, and the first two times it looked like I was dismissing him with completely true but not very believable responses,” he says. “The third time was apparently my last chance. Lucky for me, I gave him the right answer.” After spending seven years together in the city, where Barry was establishing his landscaping business and Ian was working in IT for a major insurance company, they decided to relocate. “Barry woke up one morning and said he didn’t want to live in the city any more. This was a complete shock to me as he’d always been so urbane and there had been no hint that this complete change of outlook might be coming,” says Ian. 38

For Barry, the desire for change had started to emerge after the 9/11 attacks on the US. “I also lost one of my closest friends in the 2002 Bali bombings and was growing increasingly unsettled,” he says. “I felt the world was going mad and I really wanted to live somewhere beautiful. I was also seeking more space for my expanding business.” The regional city of Albury, Barry’s home town, was suggested but Ian wasn’t sold. “I decided that I couldn’t live in the country. The Blue Mountains then came up as the default compromise – there was enough space for it to be ‘not the city’ but it was close enough to Sydney to be able to commute for work and visit for leisure,” he says. “It was also affordable.”

Ian co-owns Wyck Luxury Candles and spends his days hand-making candles from sustainable waxes and essential oils with his business partner, Robyn Vidler. Barry’s landscaping business, Arcadian Aspects, is responsible for the design of many local gardens and the maintenance of the lush garden beds that line Leura Mall. “To me, Leura is one of the most beautiful places on Earth,” says Barry. “I love the way that it operates like a country town but has an urban sophistication. Our community is very supportive when called upon but we all have busy lives, so have no interest in living in each other’s pockets.”

Leura, in the upper mountains, became the frontrunner and the couple continues to live happily in this vibrant village with their Labrador cross, Freya. They both also own and operate small businesses in the mountains.

As well as enjoying the strong sense of community in the village, Ian particularly likes the fact that Leura is “extremely diverse and extremely accepting” of anyone and everyone. “There’s a sense of taking a step back from the pressure of city life; of escaping to something a bit more ‘real’, where people are more open and friendly. As a result, the atmosphere encourages you to focus on the more important things, like each other,” he elaborates. “Generally speaking, no-one cares where you come from or what your background is. They accept you for who you are now,” adds Ian. “And being queer is largely irrelevant – I’ve always considered myself to be part of the Blue Mountains community as a whole, rather than part of some narrower LGBTIQ subset thereof.” 40

On the subject of acceptance, both men say they strongly support marriage equality, despite not wanting to marry each other. “As a gay man, my right to marry has no effect or impact on anyone else. There is no valid argument against it, yet to deny anyone the basic human right of equality has the potential to do great harm to a person’s emotional wellbeing,” says Ian. “If you’re told that you’re different and that you can’t participate in the ‘normal’ processes and rights of passage within your society, you can be pretty sure it will have some effect on how you think about yourself, whether overtly or subconsciously.” Barry agrees: “I don’t want to get married but I would like the option to say, ‘No, it doesn’t suit me’. Marriage equality would make our commitment to who we choose to love as valid as anyone else’s.” Having been together for over two decades, Ian and Barry believe there are several factors that help to keep their relationship on solid ground. “When it comes down to it, we are quite different, so I think the whole yin/yang thing plays a role,” Barry explains.

“But we also share a set of fundamental principles – we respect, promote and applaud each other’s sense of decency.” A compatible sense of humour also helps. “Being able to laugh riotously at the same things would have to be one of the most important factors contributing to the longevity of our relationship,” Barry adds. “And probably most importantly, my heart still misses a beat whenever Ian walks into a room.” Ian feels the same way: “Laughing together and laughing often is vital. Also, it certainly helps that he’s still hot – even after all these years!” BML

On a crisp October morning exactly a year before their big day, Tash Petzel and Sam Margetic were enjoying a bushwalk in Springwood when they noticed the most beautiful wild flowers starting to pepper the landscape.

Having looked around the region, the couple decided Dennarque Estate, in Mount Wilson, was the perfect spot to celebrate their love. “If you’ve never been to Mount Wilson or visited Dennarque Estate, you absolutely must take a morning off to explore it,” says Tash. “The gardens, the colours, the climate, the attention to detail… It’s like stepping into a dream.” Once the venue had been chosen, the wedding planning began in earnest. “We were engaged in July 2015. Sam and I love architecture and big builds, and he proposed to me at the top of Petronas Towers in Kuala Lumpur – it was stunning,” explains Tash, who first met her future husband during a work dinner at the Lord Roberts Hotel, in Sydney. 46

“We knew we both wanted an outdoor wedding, with the landscape serving as the décor, and that bushwalk kicked off our search for a Blue Mountains garden venue,” recalls Tash.

Not long after they became engaged, Tash accepted the offer of a seven-month internship in New Zealand while Sam remained at their home in Sydney before relocating to Springwood. Consequently, most of their wedding arrangements were made with them living in separate countries.

The pair says they were fortunate to have had a significant amount of help from their families and friends. “Honestly, we couldn’t have done it without them,” says Sam. “It was amazing how they were able to pull the day together for us and make it so special.”

By the time the 8th of October 2016 came around, Tash and Sam were more than ready to exchange vows in front of their guests. Set outdoors in Dennarque Estate’s glorious grounds, the ceremony was conducted by Minister Rod Thompson, of Springwood Presbyterian Church. Sydney musician Hannah Matysek added further beauty and atmosphere to the ceremony with her velvety vocals.

“The grounds are so generous that we were able to move our 90 guests into a completely different garden setting from where the ceremony was held,” says Sam. “This helped us to break the official and celebratory parts of the day.”

Sublime spring weather and a number of personal touches helped to make the couple’s day magical – the flowers were arranged by their dear friend, Jaimee Poole; their fathers, Henryk Petzel and Gus Margetic, both gave heartfelt speeches; Tash’s mum Maureen made the wedding cake and helped Tash to make sugared-almond bonbonierre; and Tash wore earrings borrowed from her sister, Elizabeth.

There was one completely unexpected but truly memorable moment, however. “The temperature dropped suddenly from 24 to 15 degrees celsius and a surreal white mist began slow-rolling up the garden toward the reception,” Tash explains. “I grabbed Sam’s hand and we stepped away to watch it for a few moments. It was as though the elements themselves had arrived to wish us well.” BML

TRADITIONAL TOUCHES AND SPECTACULAR SURROUNDS GUARANTEED ELLA AND NEVEN’S WEDDING DAY WAS AS UNIQUE AS THEIR COMBINED CULTURAL HERITAGE.

From the second Sydney couple Ella Brinch and Neven Basic decided to marry, they started thinking about ways they could blend in customs from the various countries represented by their immediate family members. “My Mum is Australian and my Dad is from Norway,” explains Ella, a freelance violist who regularly works with the Sydney Symphony and Opera Australia orchestras, as well as being a founding member of the chamber group, Ensemble Vinifera. “There is also a Scottish connection – my mother’s father was from there.”

Neven, a professional golfer who plays on the international circuit, wanted to honour his Croatian family. He also wanted to marry Ella before the end of December 2016, as their work commitments meant he would be travelling soon after, while Ella remained in Sydney to perform.

With less than three months to organise their wedding, Ella and Neven decided on the perfect location – the Blue Mountains. “We thought the stunning views would be the ideal way to represent Australia, and it also meant my two aunties, who both live in the mountains, could be involved in the planning,” Ella adds. Fortunately for Ella, her aunties know something about style – Janet James is a former magazine editor who now specialises in interior design, and her sister Judith Langley is co-owner of Leura Whisk, a popular kitchenware store on Leura Mall. “The brief was ‘small, simple, contemporary and nonreligious’,” recalls Janet, who was assigned the role of wedding planner and relied on Judith for backup. “Ella and Neven wanted to invite around 20 guests and loved the idea of a garden wedding. As soon as Judith and I saw Allview Escape, we knew it was the right venue.” Set on 20 acres in Blackheath, Allview Escape is a romantic retreat perched on top of the Grose Valley escarpment. It offers spectacular views and rambling gardens complete with visiting kangaroos. There are also two self-contained cottages on the property – ‘Malie’s House’ has five bedrooms and ‘Isabella’ has four bedrooms. This meant the couple’s family members would literally be able to walk from their accommodation to the ceremony.

Allview Escape was promptly booked, along with a range of local service providers Janet had sourced. After just eight weeks of planning, Ella and Neven were married on 10 December 2016. “We had a civil ceremony conducted by Susan Artup of A Ceremony by Design,” says Ella. Staying true to their original vision of celebrating culture and tradition, Ella included a traditional Celtic wedding vow in the pair’s wedding ceremony to reflect her Scottish heritage. Acknowledging that rosemary is traditionally used at Croatian wedding ceremonies to ward off evil, Neven requested that a bowl of the fragrant herb be placed on the table where the wedding certificate was signed. Rosemary was also included in the beautiful table centerpieces, which were arranged by local florist Olivia Meredith, owner of The Little Flower Shop, using a selection of herbs, kale and leaves she handpicked from First Farm Organics, in Kanimbla Valley.

Ella’s mum, Sandra Brinch, baked kransekake, a traditional Norwegian celebration cake made from almond meal, icing sugar and egg white. Twenty rings were placed in the cake to signify the number of years Ella and Neven have known each other. (The pair first met at school, dated for over two years then parted ways. Their flame was rekindled in 2011, when they reconnected on Facebook and Neven offered to fly Ella to Japan, where he was playing in a golf tournament.)

As guests sat down to savour the delicious meal prepared by Red Pepper Catering, Ella’s parents handed out IKEA throws to keep everyone cosy as they enjoyed the great outdoor setting. After the wedding, the throws were donated to the Blue Mountains Refugee Support Group. This kind gesture seems to perfectly reflect the love and generosity that allowed Ella and Neven make their wedding-day dreams come true.

Neven’s grandfather supplied the rakija (Croatian fruit brandy), which was presented on a pewter plate that had been handmade by Ella’s great uncle on her father’s side. To further acknowledge Ella’s male forebears, her dad Johan wore the top hat and shoes his own father had worn at his wedding in Norway, back in 1937.

“The ceremony was lovely – it was very personal and really tailored to suit us and the atmosphere we wanted. The weather was amazing, the views were absolutely spectacular, the food and wine were delicious and the accommodation was perfect,” says Neven, adding that there was even a little red wine spilled during the evening, which signifies good luck in his homeland.

Even Ella’s wedding bouquet held special significance. Made by Blue Mountains paper artist James Gordon, the exquisite handcrafted bouquet featured eucalypts, flannel flowers and pink peonies, which have been Ella’s favourite flowers since she first saw them in her grandmother’s Norwegian garden. James also crafted the beautiful cake decorations and place cards.

According to Ella, the wedding would not have gone ahead without the help of her wonderful aunts. “And it certainly would not have been as beautiful,” she adds. “Getting married in the Blue Mountains was the best decision we made.” BML

EBENEZER UNITING CHURCH, EBENEZER: Constructed from sandstone in 1809, the country’s oldest surviving church was regularly used for wedding scenes in Seven Network’s popular TV show, A Country Practice. Set amid bushland, this picturesque piece of history sits on the banks of the Hawkesbury River. ST BERNARD’S CHURCH, HARTLEY HISTORIC SITE: A beautifully preserved example of colonial sandstone architecture, St Bernard’s is flooded with light and has served as the perfect backdrop for countless weddings. It’s available for Catholic ceremonies, and services for other denominations are welcome. ST JOHN THE EVANGELIST CHURCH, WALLERAWANG: Built in 1880, this imposing Victorian Gothic-style church is

available for services of all faiths. It features arched sandstone windows with stained glass, gargoyles and a high square-shaped bell tower topped with battlements and pinnacles. 4

ST JOSEPH’S CATHOLIC CHURCH, MEGALONG VALLEY: A dirt path leads to this modest weatherboard church, which was established in 1902 and is nestled deep in the valley. The rural setting adds to its infinite charm.

ST GEORGE’S ANGLICAN CHURCH, MOUNT WILSON (above): Standing reverently among a congregation of fern trees in a prominent position in the village, this strikingly beautiful church was consecrated in 1916. It sits on a large block and is surrounded by exotic cool-climate plants that add to its romantic vibe. BML

Bold, sexy and smoky Nars black eyeshadow made Lou’s pale-blue eyes really pop, while golden champagne highlights added sparkle and softened and blended out the dark eye shadow. This modern-day Marilyn rocked makeup by Aimee Cox of Kohl Brow Studio in Lithgow. “While most brides go for a simple, natural look on their big day, Joannah wanted something quite unique and special,” says Aimee. Using some of her favourite products – Arbonne and Youngblood Mineral Cosmetics – Aimee created a flawless base for Joannah’s movie-star look. A fully qualified beauty therapist and make-up artist with nine years of experience, Aimee has recently decided to focus on eyebrow transformations while still offering bridal and special-occasion makeup. When is the best time to get a haircut before your wedding – the day before or one or two weeks out? This hangs entirely on what style of cut you are wanting to sport on the day. Short and tight fades or tapers need to be fresh, on the day or the week of. Natural, longer cuts can be done a week to three weeks before, as long as your edges and neckline can be clean and tidy on the day. I personally believe the phrase ‘a haircut looks better after two weeks’ to be somewhat of an old wives’ tale. If you have a good barber, it can be done on the day. I had a faded slick-back on my wedding day and had it done on the morning. Bro flow, buzz cut, extreme side part or classic fade – what’s hot right now? While fades and tapers, some right down to the skin, have come back in a big way over the last three to five years, I’m starting to see and have had requests for a lot of longer and more natural traditional men’s cuts. There’s an increase in the request for scissor cuts, which require a length longer than you can obtain with clippers. I think we’ll soon start to see a lot more of the ’80s bro flow, ’90s undercuts and centre parts making their way back in. As we all know, fashion is cyclical. 68

What about facial hair – are beards still big? I believe beards are beginning to get shorter, and may well be on their way out. Short beards, stubble and clean shaves are coming back in. Having said this, there is still a huge cult following for tamed and untamed beards, and some will sport a beard regardless of changing trends. AND BATHURST GOLDSMITH JOHN FOX USES IT TO CRAFT UNIQUE AND TIMELESS PIECES.

As conscious consumers, we like our food to be locally grown, sustainably farmed and fair trade, but what about our jewellery? With child labour, conflict diamonds and environmental havoc just some of the well-documented and dire consequences of the international gold and gemstone trade, it’s refreshing to find ethical Australian jewellery sourced and handmade right here in our region. Bathurst goldsmith and manufacturing jeweller John Fox teams with local fossickers, gem cutters and lapidary clubs to unearth regional gold and gemstones for his bespoke creations. The one-time saddler and avionics technician turned his crafty hands to jewellery making many years ago, after he came under the influence of master carver and sculptor Hape Kiddle. “I’ve always been very good with my hands and developed an interest in jewellery when my friend Hape taught me how to carve bone and make basic pieces,” recalls John, who operates under the name Fox Artistic Creations. Time at Fairfield TAFE in Melbourne learning jewellery manufacturing further steered his career path, but it is John’s innate ability and artistic sensibilities that shine through in his work. “As a child I was very curious about how things worked and I’ve always had the ability to be able to look at something, dissect it in my head and know how it goes back together,” he explains. 77

Intent on keeping traditional artisan skills alive, John eschews the modern trend for mass production. “The jewellery industry is moving towards designing things on CAD [Computer-Aided Design], using 3D printers and sending it off to get cast, and a lot of traditional skills are disappearing,” he says.

Now a retreat for artists and day-trippers, Hill End is almost a ghost town but gold is still being found in and around its undulating hills and spent tailings. “Whenever council runs a grader over a dirt road in Hill End, you can bet there’ll be someone following it with a metal detector picking up something,” laughs John.

While John admits technology is a valuable tool (he recently purchased a laser welder to assist with repairs), he insists computers can never replace hand skills that have been passed down over thousands of years: “It takes over half a lifespan of doing things with your hands to hone those skills. Knowing how to use and control your tools, and being comfortable with all the elements – fire, air, earth and water – all come into it when you are forging out any sort of metal.”

Gemstones are also in great supply across the region, with John revealing that Oberon is a major source of spinel, zircon and sapphires. “The sapphires vary in colour between brilliant blue and green,” he says. “Native Dog Creek, near Black Springs, is known for its green sapphires.”

And when the metal you are working comes from just down the road, it also becomes personal. John sources the majority of his materials locally, including gold from fossickers, panners and re-sellers in Hill End, hub of the 1880s New South Wales gold rush. At the height of the boom, the picturesque little town, located on the outskirts of Bathurst, was home to over 10,000 fortune seekers.

According to John, Australia is “awash with sapphires” – though not all of them are gem quality: “Practised fossickers can hold a stone up to the light and see how clear it is. Quality stones are very clean with minimal inclusions. The all-important thing is getting light in and out of a stone to make it sparkle in jewellery.”

John is well aware of the unethical practices of the international jewel trade. “I’m very conscious of the conditions which a lot of stones are mined in. If I am going to work with diamonds, for example, I will rarely use anything other than Australian argyle diamonds. We certainly have enough beautiful stones in Australia not to need to go overseas,” he explains. “It is important for people to source local products and not ship things half-way round the world or make things from components that are mined on the other side of the world,” says John emphatically. “We need to get back to doing things on a local level. I’m just trying to do my bit.”

“Being able to inherit something from your mother or grandmother because it was made properly and has lasted is very important,” he adds. “We need the longevity that quality craftsmanship provides because personal items that are passed down tell our story and provide a link to our ancestors, and to the makers of the piece.” Creatively, John says he is inspired by natural form, referencing shapes used in the past by renowned Danish silversmith Georg Jensen and one of his most famous designers, Swedish master jeweller Vivianna Torun Bülow-Hübe, known professionally as Torun.

This includes remodelling existing jewellery by reusing stones and materials to make new and unique pieces, and upholding high standards of quality craftsmanship so Fox Artistic Creations pieces will be treasured as heirlooms.

“Great designers influence others far beyond their own lifespan,” says John. “Timelessness, not fashion, is important to me and those eternal shapes of nature are wonderful inspiration. I like to be able to create unusual and spectacular one-offs – individual pieces for individuals, not mass production for the masses.”

“If a customer wants to commission a piece, I try to get as much of their input as possible because that way they really own the piece – not just physically but because they’ve had a hand in its design. It’s not like just walking into a shop and buying something; they have helped create a piece of art that they can pass down to their kids with real sentimental significance,” John elaborates.

Most days John can be found in his workshop, located in the back garden of his Bathurst home and open by appointment only. His beautiful work is also waiting to be discovered at Bathurst Regional Art Gallery and Tablelands Artists Co-operative Gallery. BML foxartisticcreations.com

COSPLAY ENTHUSIAST CHANI HUGHES IS THE ARTISAN BEHIND SELKIE COUTURE, A BESPOKE BRIDALWEAR BUSINESS SPECIALISING IN COMPLEMENTARY WEDDING DRESSES FOR SAME-SEX COUPLES. SHE SPOKE WITH BLUE MOUNTAINS LOVE ABOUT HER PASSION FOR MAKING.

Tell us a little about your background? I’ve lived in the Blue Mountains nearly my whole life and couldn’t imagine living anywhere else. I’m in my final year of a Bachelor of Theatre and Performance Degree at the University of New England, which feels both exciting and terrifying. In between uni I’ve worked with theatre companies and trained as a belly dancer, performing as a soloist at various events throughout the mountains and in Sydney as my dancing alter-ego, Selkie. I’ve also been making clothes and costumes for many years, hence Selkie Couture. How did you get into dressmaking? When I was little, I hand-sewed clothes for my toys. Mum put together a small sewing kit for me, gave me pieces of fabric and showed me the first steps to using a sewing machine. As I got older, I graduated to a sewing machine and made clothes for myself and family members and friends, and I began to work on costumes.

Why does cosplay appeal to you?

What prompted you to make complementary wedding dresses for same-sex couples?

I’ve loved dressing up ever since I was little. Throughout high school I made costumes for themed parties, and when others outgrew ‘dressing up’ I started making more elaborate costumes and looking for more opportunities to create and wear my designs. I started attending comic conventions, which validated my work, and am now part of the cosplay community – people who make costumes and dress up as their favourite characters from various pop cultures. I take commissions for costumes and create steampunk accessories for Afternoonified, in Katoomba.

I was incredibly touched when my close friend Amanda got engaged to her now wife, Cassie, and asked if I would make their wedding dresses. They told me how hard it was to find wedding dresses for a same-sex marriage that weren’t identical or completely different. They wanted complementary dresses but also wanted to reflect their own personalities. I realised that other couples must also experience this and decided to specialise in gowns that complemented each other through style and fabric choices.

What bridal services do you offer at Selkie Couture?

What are your hopes for the future?

I design and custom-make dresses and accessories, specialising in creating complementary wedding dresses for same-sex couples. As a costume designer I’m interested in the alternative market – steampunk and fantasy based wedding gowns – as well as traditional. I work closely with clients to design and create their dream dresses and include consultations throughout the creative process to ensure the design stays on track with what the clients want, whether that’s a dress that is more casual and can be worn again, a highly elaborate gown with hand beading and long veils and trains, or a dress to fit to a specific theme or concept.

I would love to have more opportunities to make dresses for same-sex couples, along with dresses for those in the alternative fashion scene, and I hope my business progresses to a point where I may be able to take on apprentices and teach others. I designed dresses for two lovely ladies who had to fly to another country to be able to officially call each other ‘wife’ – I have seen how important it is to both of them to be recognised as a married couple, and how deeply they love one another. They have as much right as any of us do to get married, and I hope soon other same-sex couples will be legally allowed to marry in their own country. BML

What are you working on now?

I’m working on a few projects. One is my own design for Belle’s yellow ball gown from Beauty and the Beast, which I’ll be showcasing at a comic convention in September. I’m planning on hand-beading the dress, along with a lot of other fine detail, so that will be one of my most elaborate costumes yet. When I finish university, it’s my aim to branch into costume design for theatre, along with working on my wedding-dress designs.

WHEN TANIA BOWERS ISN’T STYLING HAIR AND MAKING UP

Artist, designer, hair stylist, eco-warrior – which label suits you best? This totally depends on what time of the day you ask me! I think nowadays I’m really happy to be all those things and don’t feel like I need to be one or another. I can switch modes fairly easily. Tell us a little bit about your background. I was a musician/songwriter from my late teens into my 20s and really discovered the world through that medium. I travelled and made friends touring as part of the small-ish indie rock scene of the late 1990s and early 2000s. When music didn’t pay the bills, I started working in Chicago for an artist/designer who helped shape the way I looked at things and encouraged my love of textiles. Together we re-worked garments we found in vintage stores and flea markets in New York and Paris, and I assisted her at fashion shows. It was a mix of high- and low-brow design that worked in perfect harmony. Later on, my husband Joe, who’s a photographer, suggested I get into hair and makeup, so I crossed over into set work and began collaborating with photographers. 85

How did your career path change when you moved to the Blue Mountains? When Joe, our daughter Frida and I came to the mountains just under three years ago, I knew I would have to change industries slightly. I found that weddings were a big thing here and it was easy enough to transfer my skills in hair and makeup from on-set to working with brides, and it was much more satisfying. I switched to using organic hair products when I realised the harsh chemicals used in traditional salons were damaging – and just not for me. What is eco-dyeing, and how did you get into it? Eco-dyeing is a craft, and a science, whereby cloth is steamed and boiled with mordants (fixatives) to extract natural colour from flora and fauna. I decided to get into eco-dyeing soon after we started living up here. I had put away a lot of my crafty things and was establishing myself as an organic hairdresser when I discovered a book by India Flint, a pioneer of ecodyeing using native botanicals. I was learning all about the chemical reactions in dyeing hair and much of the theory was the same, so I thought I’d give it a go. Under my label Wild Botanik, I now work with beautiful Blue Mountains flora and local stylists and florists to make hand-dyed ribbons, scarves, table runners, curtains and clothing – or whatever can be made from fabric. One of my favourite things to do is offer brides a silk scarf made from their bouquet. It’s a great keepsake of their wedding day. What do you see yourself doing in five years’ time? All I really know is things will shift again and again. I’d be happy to keep doing what I’m doing – hairdressing, wedding hair and make-up, and eco-dyeing, with hopefully a new folk record thrown into the mix. BML

When I cut my teeth in the events industry some 20 years ago, the only ‘stylist’ at any wedding was the hair and makeup person. Fast-forward to 2017, and the traditional roles of wedding decorator and florist have given way to a new collection of highly skilled suppliers, including the wedding stylist. While hiring a wedding stylist may be a luxury for some couples and a no-brainer for others, when considering whether or not to DIY it pays to take a giant step back and look at your overall vision for the celebration, the provisions for set-up and your personal priorities on the day.

BEING BUDGET WISE Cost might be an obvious reason for going down the DIY path, but it’s important to look at the pros and cons, and whether you will realistically have the time to nail it. I’m frequently being contacted by panicked brides who had

every intention of styling their own wedding, but soon became overwhelmed by all the other tasks associated with getting married. Depending on the size of your wedding, it’s often the case that the benefits of DIY will be outweighed by the time and money savings associated with engaging an experienced stylist in the early stages of your planning. A stylist will be able to tell you where your styling budget is best spent. And, as well as having an inventory of props at hand, a savvy stylist can also share tricks of the trade to ensure you get the most out of your budget. Hiring props is cheaper than buying them. And while you might not need a stylist on the day, hiring props from an established stylist or event-hire business, and engaging their pre-wedding advice with regards to design, set-up and packdown, will also help ensure your special day is problem-free. 103

YOU WANT TO EXPRESS YOURSELF

I’ve seen countless brides coming to my studio to collect their prop-hire orders who are completely exhausted after visiting the flower markets in the early hours – and they still have to decorate their venue, tick additional things off the seemingly endless checklist and appear radiant as they get set to marry the love of their life the following day. My advice is to either phone a friend or two, or engage a professional who can see your vision and is willing to share the load. Taking a slightly less ‘hands-on’ creative role in your wedding will leave you with more time to enjoy the beauty session with your bridal party on your big day and ensure you look and feel amazing when you walk down the aisle.

If you like the idea of going to the day spa to sip champagne with your bridesmaids while the boys play a round of golf, or you’re planning to enjoy a fun afternoon of rehearsals before a family dinner, I have three words for you – book a stylist!

A few years ago a groom called me and said: “Nicole, we haven’t a creative bone in either of our bodies and the venue we booked has ugly walls. Can you help us, PLEASE?” As it turns out, Mitch didn’t know there were people like me, but after a short phone call and a face-to-face consult, Mitch and his fiancé left my studio feeling like they had handed over the hardest part of the wedding – the decorating.

Wedding stylists are worth their weight in gold when it comes to getting down and dirty for the set-up and packdown of events. Let’s not sugar-coat it – styling a wedding involves a lot of lifting, lugging, unpacking and tidying up. And you have to do it all again in reverse once the celebrations are over. The majority of my clients want to spend the time immediately before their wedding connecting with their guests. After all, weddings give you a rare opportunity to have all the people you love together in one place to celebrate your good fortune. And after the day you will likely want to do nothing more than hide under the covers and savour your newly wedded bliss. 104

As their stylist, I was able to take the reins in preparing a design and executing the styling to ensure their wedding looked amazing (and to take the focus away from the ugly walls), while making sure their big day reflected who they both were as a couple.

YOUR WEDDING IS BIGGER THAN BEN HUR! You’ve booked the best photographer, you’re wearing the designer couture gown and you’ve gone all out on the venue, the food and the cake – it’s all about blowing your guests away. And the icing on the cake will be seeing your wedding on the pages of a glossy wedding magazine or blog. Some people really want to ensure their day is the most memorable event ever for everyone involved. If you and your betrothed want to make an everlasting impression, I’m all for it… But it goes without saying that outstanding styling is essential.

If you’re a designer familiar with decorating amazing spaces, then it’s important to engage a stylist who shares your vision and makes you feel 100 per cent confident in their ability. Take the time to carefully research your chosen stylist and have an honest chat about your vision and your budget. Building trust is imperative – it will allow you to let go and give your chosen expert the freedom to use their skills, knowledge and creative power to fulfil your wildest wedding dreams. BML

Dressmaker REMINISCENT OF DELIA FALCONER’S POIGNANT NOVEL, THE SERVICE OF CLOUDS, THE STORY OF MISS PAGE – DRESSMAKER TO THE BLUE MOUNTAINS – IS ONE OF UNREQUITED LOVE AND DUTY, PLAYED OUT ON THE PRE- AND POST-WAR STREETS OF KATOOMBA.

In 2010, all that remained of the life and work of Violet Florence Page was contained in a couple of battered old cardboard suitcases destined for the tip. Inside were crumpled handmade frocks and paper patterns from the 1920s to 1950s, personal papers, a faded photograph of Violet and letters written to a young soldier apparently lost during World War II. Peter Staton of Hazelbrook Cottage Antiques had purchased the cases as part of a deceased estate and, knowing of her work as a local seamstress and her love of vintage and local history, gave them to Lorna McKenzie of The Tailor’s Apprentice. Thrilled by the fortuitous find, Lorna curated the contents of the cases, creating the Miss Page Collection of dress patterns and piecing together Violet’s story. 108

ESTELLE WEDDING GOWN FROM THE MISS PAGE COLLECTION, AVAILABLE ON ETSY FROM THE TAILOR’S APPRENTICE. MODEL: LILLIAN STARR. Born in Sydney’s Rockdale back in 1910, Violet moved to the Blue Mountains in the 1940s and lived in Katoomba with her beloved dad, Fred Page. She worked as a waitress at the Paragon Café, where pay was a pittance. She hated the job, finding “needed laughter” with her fellow waitresses Iris and Thelma, with whom she formed lifelong friendships. To supplement her wages, Violet turned her creative hobbies of sewing and painting into a successful dressmaking business, designing and handcrafting ball and tea gowns, and dresses for brides, housewives and babies. But it is through Violet’s funny and frank letters, written every Thursday night to Private Kenneth James Grimison – her young soldier, who had been sent to fight in Malaya – that Lorna learned of the outcome of their doomed relationship.

Most of Violet’s letters, signed “lots of love”, were returned to sender by the Australian Defence Force. Private Grimison had been captured by the Japanese with the ill-fated 2/29th battalion Australian 8th Division, upon the fall of Singapore on February 15, 1942. As a prisoner of war, Ken was sent to Changi Jail for more than three-and-a-half “hell” years of torture and deprivation then worked on the infamous Thai-Burma railway, before being returned to Changi. Violet received this last letter from him, scribbled in pencil and dated Changi Jail, September 18, 1945.

Dear Violet, I expect you gave up hope of ever hearing of me again. I received one letter from you after the capitulation, written June 1942. Being cut off from the outside world for over three-and-a-half years, all we know as yet [is] the war is over and freedom has come to us at last. I have lost a lot of weight, three stone in two months. The Thailand-Burma railway was a bad show. Feeling okay apart from a touch of beriberi. Malaria I had 29 times. We expect to be sailing home very soon. PS. You’ve probably forgotten who I am by now. Ken

Ken returned to his hometown of Deniliquin, in the Riverina region of New South Wales, where he eventually married and built a transport business. When Lorna tracked down his sister, Molly McDonnell, who turned 92 when this story came to light, she said Ken had hoped to marry a girl from Katoomba on his return from the war, but that she wasn’t at the dockside when he arrived. He believed she had married someone else and was heartbroken. It is unknown if Violet ever waited at the docks for Ken. She continued her dressmaking in the mountains, sewing many bridal gowns but never her own. BML 109
