WELCOME
Love Wins After a particularly tumultuous year for the world, it was uplifting to end 2017 with two significant wins. Firstly, we were thrilled to be named ‘Start Up Superstar’ at the Regional Business Awards, held in October. And, of course, finally having Marriage Equality granted across the land was the icing on the cake! At long last we can all just get on with the business of celebrating love, much like the five couples featured in this issue – all of whom chose to exchange their vows in the beautiful Blue Mountains. Our cover stars, Anita and Brett, were married in autumn at Bilpin Resort. Fulfilling their desire to reflect the environment, the pair opted for a rustic theme highlighted by magnificent Australian native flowers (see their True Love story on page 18). All the couples we interviewed made sure nature played a leading role in their wedding celebrations. From the Megalong Valley and Mount Tomah to Rydal and Kurrajong, we think you’ll agree that the venue options in our corner of the globe are breathtaking. For our Inspiration story (page 72), we collaborated with a team of talented locals to evoke a sense of old Hollywood glamour, using the magnificent Lilianfels Resort & Spa in Katoomba as the backdrop.
On a final note, we will be hosting our second expo – The Love Affair – at The Carrington Hotel on Sunday 19 August 2018. It’s a great opportunity to meet the clever folk behind the flourishing Blue Mountains wedding industry. In the meantime, keep the love flowing! Lisa & Jacqueline xx 8

We also explored Lithgow, enjoyed a high tea or two, took a tour with Blue Mountains Vintage Cadillacs and talked to innovative locals Celine Watz of Floral by Nature, couturier Daniel Learmont and Amy Christie of Wedding Paws.

BEAUTY
AISLE-READY SMILES As Hollywood actress Connie Stevens said, “Nothing you wear is more important than your smile”. This sentiment is echoed by Dr Henriette Macri-Etienne of Integrated Dental Health in Katoomba, who has several tips for enhancing your smile.
Finding the right dentist is critical – someone who listens, is empathetic and understands your needs. And someone who is willing to explain all the options available, in detail, given the financial, biological and distress costs involved. Biological cost refers to irreversible changes made to your teeth, such as removing tooth structure for veneers. Distress cost refers to the length of treatment and the stressful nature of visiting the dentist multiple times – sometimes people with dental phobia prefer treatment whilst asleep via IV sedation. Thankfully, payment plans and financing options allow more people access to a confident, beautiful and healthy smile for life, and all the benefits that has to offer.
HOW MUCH TIME DO YOU NEED? In an ideal world you would allow 24 months for traditional braces, whitening veneers and facial injectables. The advantage of more time for orthodontics means a broader smile without dark corridors at the corners of the mouth. 16
The shorter 12-month option means six to nine months of ‘fast braces’ would be required to straighten front teeth only. Veneers and whitening would usually be involved for the best cosmetic result, as well as facial injectables. As a bare minimum, two visits with your dental hygienist in the 12 months prior to the big day would ensure your gums are healthy, pink and firm, and that your breath is naturally fresh – healthy gums enhance a smile beyond words. BML integrateddentalhealth.com.au
BITE-SIZED ADVICE • Digital Smile Analysis is a helpful tool as it allows you to visualise before and after, and helps you decide which options would be best for you. • Orthodontics, including ‘fast braces’ or Invisalign/ClearCorrect, are highly effective and give desirable results. • Professional whitening options plus ceramic veneers, as well as facial injectables, are useful treatment modalities for most people.

A beautiful smile is made up of healthy skin, lips and gums – not just teeth. But how do you achieve the dental dream for your wedding day?

TRUE LOVE
Anita AND Brett BILPIN
GO BEYOND THE PINES AND ENTER THE ‘SECRET CIRCLE’ AT ANITA AND BRETT’S BILPIN WEDDING.
As a professional outdoor lifestyle and sports photographer, there was only one place Brett Hemmings wanted to marry his long-time friend and fiancé Anita – amid great natural beauty. The pair, from Blacktown in Sydney’s western suburbs, had been scouring the Internet and the south coast for the perfect spot to exchange vows but a trip to the Blue Mountains sealed it for them. When Brett and Anita set foot among the pines in the ‘Secret Circle’ at Bilpin Resort, they were smitten. “We wanted to book that same day,” says Anita, who admits she left most of the venue hunting to Brett. “He knew exactly what he wanted and, being a photographer keen on the outback, camping and 4-wheel driving, the setting was all important. It had to be picturesque and outdoors.” A casual ceremony with 130 friends and family was planned for late March to take advantage of an autumnal setting. The reception was held in Bilpin Resort’s purpose-built marquee and Anita enlisted Thoughtful Petal to style and provide flowers. 18

“
We decided on a rustic theme with Australian native flowers and local apples as props to evoke a sense of place. We wanted to reflect where we were.
It’s said that rain on your wedding day is good luck but it was definitely not factored in to Brett and Anita’s plans. “On the day of the wedding, Brett was sitting in the little cabin staring out at the rain, willing it to stop,” recalls Anita. “We had a wet-weather backup plan in place but just 15 minutes before we were due to start the ceremony, Brett made the call to relocate back to the ‘Secret Circle’.” Luckily Brett’s intuition paid off. The rain stopped and the ceremony could proceed in beautiful, misty mountain conditions, but only after many of the guests were ferried through the mud to the site in a procession of SUVs.
“
Anita was glad she opted for a tea-length wedding dress. “If I’d worn a long dress I would have been covered in mud,” she laughs. Finding the right dress wasn’t easy though. “I didn’t want a traditional wedding gown and I really liked that ’50s vintage style, but after visiting loads of bridal stores I still couldn’t find what I was looking for. “Mum rang me from a little shop in Wentworthville one day and said, ‘I think I’ve found a dress that you’ll like’. I kind of rolled my eyes but when I tried the dress on it was perfect, and I had to admit that Mum knew best.” Brett, on the other hand, found his suit while on a working trip to Melbourne. “Because we weren’t having a bridal party, he didn’t have to worry about matching or complementing anyone else, so he chose his favourite store, Jack London, and came away with a whole outfit,” says Anita. The decision not to have a formal bridal party meant Anita and Brett could spend the day together and had more time to be with their wedding guests after a brief photo session. “I don’t have a sister and had never been a bridesmaid myself, so I didn’t feel the need to choose favourites,” Anita explains. “We had our brothers as witnesses and the ceremony was simple and low-stress.” “We decided on a rustic theme with Australian native flowers and local apples as props to evoke a sense of place. We wanted to reflect where we were. Sometimes you look at wedding photos and you have no idea where the wedding took place – they are just so generic,” says Anita. “I could not have imagined our venue looking any better than it did. Stephanie Walker from Thoughtful Petal captured our offbeat vibe perfectly and went above and beyond, setting up in the rain and even getting her car bogged,” Anita adds. 20
They may have wanted a simple ceremony but they certainly didn’t skimp on the reception. Catering was organised by Bilpin Resort, local cider was served and Brett sourced the entertainment, Ruby Keys Band. “Ruby Keys were incredible and had everyone on their feet,” Anita says. “Talar (the singer) came around a couple of weeks before the wedding and helped plan the running order of the reception. She was amazing because we didn’t know a lot about how to schedule speeches and everything,”

Anita recalls. “Talar gave us amazing advice on how to create a real party vibe after the serious stuff was over. We just wanted everyone to have a great time. I’m so glad we got a band because it really transformed the event.” Staying on site meant the bride and groom, and several of the wedding party, could really kick up their heels. Accommodation at the resort includes a four-bedroom house and five individual cabins that lend a certain Wes Anderson air to the venue. After their wedding night at Bilpin, the couple stayed another night in the mountains at The Hydro Majestic to let it all in sink in before jetting off for a honeymoon in the United States, followed by a Caribbean cruise a couple of weeks later. Two years on, Anita has put her career as a speech pathologist on hold to raise their daughter Pearl but fondly remembers the attention and care they received in Bilpin: “We can’t thank Steve and Amanda from Bilpin Resort enough. They both went above and beyond our expectations to make the wedding we had planned happen, despite morning rain and very soggy conditions. Their ‘Secret Circle’ ceremony area is a must to check out if you’re planning your own wedding.” BML

TRUE LOVE
Rebecca AND Rachel MOUNT TOMAH
CELEBRATING 10 YEARS OF LOVE IN A TIMELESS LANDSCAPE PROVED TO BE A PERFECT COMBINATION FOR REBECCA AND RACHEL. A mutual friend and a shared love of Aussie Rules first brought Rachel Coates and Rebecca Schiller together, but it would be 10 years before they would celebrate their commitment to each other in the beautiful surrounds of the Blue Mountains Botanic Garden at Mount Tomah. “We met at a friend’s open-mic gig at a pub in Sydney. We had both known this friend for years but had never bumped into each other,” Rachel recalls. “I noticed we were both watching the Sydney Swans versus Brisbane in an AFL [Australian Football League] game on TV,” says Rebecca. “After some small talk, confirming we were both AFL fans and that neither of us liked the Swans, small talk turned into big talk and the rest is history.” In fact, Rachel and Rebecca were so enamoured of each other that they nearly missed seeing their friend perform that night. 27
The couple, who now live in the Sutherland Shire, went on to build a life together, welcoming daughter Annabel in 2013. Although they contemplated an overseas wedding, or waiting for marriage equality at home, sentimentality won out over legalities. “We’d always talked about whether we would get married overseas before it was legal here, but it didn’t seem right because Australia didn’t recognise overseas same-sex marriages,” explains Rebecca. “When I realised after eight years together that our 10th anniversary would fall on a Saturday, it seemed like a good enough reason to have a wedding. Luckily Rach agreed.” “Although we do intend to legally marry, for us the date and timing of our wedding was most meaningful,” says Rachel. “It’s nice that we got to choose the day, rather than it being the outcome of a drawn-out political event.” And so, on the 15th April 2017 – the 10th anniversary of the day they met – 50 guests, 10 of them children, gathered in the scenic grounds of Blue Mountains Botanic Garden to celebrate Rebecca and Rachel’s union. 28
The ceremony, held on the ‘Wedding Tree Terrace’ overlooking the gardens and the valley below, was relaxed and personal. “Having been together for a decade, we wanted our ceremony to reflect the love and connection we’d already built together, as well as our commitment to the future,” Rachel explains. “Our celebrant, Elizabeth Trevan, helped us write heartfelt vows, stage-managed two bridal parties and conducted the ceremony beautifully,” adds Rebecca. “We both had two bridesmaids, each having a sister and a friend, and our fouryear-old daughter, Annabel, was the ring bearer.” And what special rings they were: Rebecca and Rachel designed each other’s engagement and wedding rings, then made them by hand with help from Larsen Jewellery.
29
After the ceremony, the bridal party and guests were transported to the Fairmont Resort Blue Mountains in Leura for the reception, where a wall-to-wall view of the Jamison Valley made for a breathtaking backdrop. “Similar to our ceremony, we wanted a relaxed, family friendly environment for our reception,” says Rachel. “We chose a daytime reception so those with younger children could arrange naps and playtime, and come and go as they needed. We also set up a kid’s corner with some games and a little homemade activity book that Reb created – I think it was a hit with the adult kids more than the little ones!” Cutting back on formalities with a cocktail-style reception assisted the laidback celebration, with canapés, a dance floor and space for conversations and photos ensuring everyone was catered for.

laughter, love, friends, family and, of course, cake! “Having a small number of guests allowed us to spend time with most people at the reception, which was lovely as many of our guests had travelled a fair distance to be there,” says Rebecca. “The day was exactly as we had pictured it – full of fun, laughter, love, friends, family and, of course, cake! Being a daytime wedding and reception also meant we could go out for dinner afterwards, just the two of us, and relive all the precious moments.” “The beauty of our ceremony and reception was in the simplicity,” says Rachel. “The natural majesty of the mountains provided the perfect setting.” BML

Sarah AND
Gene RYDAL
FULFILLING THEIR DESIRE FOR A WINTER WEDDING,
THIS MARRICKVILLE COUPLE TURNED THEIR UNION INTO A WEEKEND OF CELEBRATING IN THE MOUNTAINS WITH FAMILY AND FRIENDS.
34
PHOTOS: DANIEL GRIFFITHS PHOTOGRAPHY 35
Sarah Whitworth and Gene Fehlberg originally met online back in November 2010 but almost didn’t make it to their first date. “Being a musician, Gene asked if I’d like to watch him play, so I took a few friends with me. Because his photo on the website was so small, I assumed he was the bass player and didn’t feel any attraction, so promptly left after the first set,” says Sarah. “Gene then called me while I was on my way home with my friend Jenny and asked if I liked his singing,” she adds. “I turned to Jenny and screamed, ‘He was the singer!’ – obviously I thought he was cute, and the rest is history.” Six years later, in June 2016, the couple became engaged in Thailand. Gene had hired a private boat during a visit to the Phi Phi Islands and proposed mid-swim by pulling the ring out from his board shorts. After planning the various aspects of their wedding for months in advance but not coming up with the ideal location, Sarah and Gene stumbled across Blue Mountains Love in a Newtown newsagency and their search began in earnest. “When I discovered that Paul Bedggood, the makeup artist I had chosen for my wedding day, was featured in the magazine, I realised the Blue Mountains was meant to be,” Sarah recalls. “Gene is originally from Mullumbimby, in northern New South Wales, and had never been to the
Blue Mountains before I took him there when we were dating,” says Sarah. “Ever since, weekends away have been spent exploring mountain cafés and restaurants, and going for hikes – it’s become our go-to place.” With their birthdays in June and July, Sarah and Gene decided a winter wedding would be the perfect way to keep the celebrations going each year. “A summer wedding never had any appeal,” says Gene. “The idea of red wine and craft beer by the fire with amazing music and views was so us.” The couple set 8 July 2017 as their wedding date and chose Seclusions Blue Mountains, in Rydal, as their venue. Along with beautiful views from every angle, this romantic retreat has six cabins onsite, all with spas and gas log fires. There is also the ‘Super Cabin’, privately set on a hillside and boasting a glass-encased double spa looking out across the lush rolling hills. After six months of planning, with a great deal of love and support from family, the big day arrived and 100 guests gathered outdoors at Seclusions to witness Sarah and Gene exchange their vows. Two of Sarah’s bridesmaids, Chelsea Gilleran and Melissa Patterson, even flew all the way over from the US. “It was super freezing and we were shaking while signing the documents,” laughs Sarah. “But the sun came out right after the ceremony, and everyone loved being around the fire. It was a ceremony filled with love and respect for each other and those around us – including couples who couldn’t get married at the time under New South Wales law.” Respect was also shown for loved ones who have passed, including Gene’s Dad, Kerry. “We shared photos as a reminder that they are still with us,” says Gene, adding that another special touch was having Sarah’s mother, Jane, and brother David read a poem during the ceremony. Family members also helped out with the flowers. “We bought flowers from Sydney Flower Market and they were arranged by my artist brother, David, and Gene’s mother, Carol, who is also an artist,” says Sarah. “The gum was provided by Gene’s Aunty Val and Uncle Ross, who own Camellia Hill Foliage Farm in Silvan, Victoria – Carol drove it all the way to the Blue Mountains!” ‘Something blue’ was provided by the hand-dyed silk ribbon tied around the flowers, which came from Songbird Silk, owned by Gene’s sister-in-law’s sister, Tamara Franz.
36
Gene says the whole experience of getting married was exhilarating: “For me, it was the intensity of the day overall, and the love of family and friends in the room and all together.”

“
While there was so much to love about their big day, Sarah says Gene singing her down the aisle was her standout moment: “The crowd was shocked and everyone cried when Gene started singing Van Morrison’s Crazy Love. It had us all going, including my father, Trevor, who was walking me.”
Gene started singing Van Morrison’s Crazy Love.
Taking lessons at El Paso Dance Studio for six weeks meant Sarah danced in perfect step with Gene and her Dad. The venue also proved to be perfect – along with the spectacular views, Gene says he really appreciated the outstanding service: “Tom, the owner, is straight up and easy to deal with – he listens to concerns and answers questions promptly, and he even lent a hand on the night, when we had to quickly make up another table because we had miscounted the numbers.” Mr and Mrs Fehlberg both say they wouldn’t hesitate to recommend the Blue Mountains as a wedding destination. “The surrounds are beautiful, the air is crisp and clean, and it’s a beautiful place for family and friends to get away for the weekend,” Sarah concludes. “It’s also so cosy in winter!” BML 37

TRUE LOVE
Jilan AND Omar KURRAJONG
IT WAS LOVE AT FIRST SIGHT – AND BITE – WHEN JILAN MET HER FUTURE HUSBAND OMAR IN HIS SOUTH COAST RESTAURANT. There’s an old saying about the way to a man’s heart being through his stomach, but roles were reversed when Jilan Shamdin ate at Omar Osaj’s Wollongong restaurant. The chance encounter resulted in the ultimate commitment of love – a marriage proposal and an autumn wedding in the picturesque lower Blue Mountains village of Kurrajong. “We are both originally from Iraq – I am from Kurdistan in Northern Iraq and moved to Australia with my family 19 years ago,” Jilan explains while describing how she met the love of her life. “One day, Mum and I visited a friend in Wollongong who recommended we try the food at Casablanca on Crown. It sounded great, so we went there for a traditional Moroccan breakfast. The first person I saw was Omar welcoming us into the restaurant.” Jilan admits there was a spark between them on that very first meeting but that it took a few months for the pair to really get to know each other. “After a while, when we felt the time was right, Omar came to introduce himself to my family,” Jilan recalls. “The family meeting was intense, but Omar answered all the questions well.” 40

Omar must have done something right, as he got the nod of approval from Jilan’s family and it wasn’t long before the couple set their wedding date. Tradition dictated that the official marriage take place before the wedding celebrations. “We were married by a Sheikh (as per Islamic practices) in a simple ceremony in front of my family at my house,” says Jilan. It may have been simple but traditional elements such as having their pinkie fingers covered in henna were incorporated into the ceremony, and the significance of the event was certainly not lost on Jilan and Omar. “It was very special for us because we were both so happy that it was all coming together, and we were officially husband and wife.” The actual wedding day was held a few weeks later at The Turpentine Tree in Kurrajong. “We found The Turpentine Tree on Facebook,” says Jilan. “And when we went there to meet the lovely owners of the property, Joanne and Allan, we were instantly in love with it. The location was so peaceful and the venue had special little places at every corner.” The beauty of the autumnal setting was also a drawcard. “When we saw the red, yellow and green of the leaves, we knew we’d picked the right season to get married,” adds Jilan. On the morning of the wedding, Jilan’s sister Diljn took her to the makeup artist, Makeup by Tania. “As soon as we finished with the makeup, we stopped to have breakfast, as if my wedding wasn’t even on that day. I went home to get dressed with the help of my mother and a dear friend, Mervat (from Hijabs by Mervat), who helped me to wear my veil.”
Jilan and Omar arrived at the venue before the guests to make sure photographs were not rushed. Being able to take their time with the photographer, Chris Braga, was a really special moment for the pair and one Omar remembers as a highlight. The shoot included a boat ride on The Turpentine Tree’s lake, which Jilan says was a lot of fun. “I would have to say getting into the little, unstable canoe was the best part of the day for both of us. No-one expected us to do it and the reaction on my Mum’s face when she saw me getting into the canoe in my heels was priceless!”

getting into the canoe in my heels was priceless!
After photographs, the couple spent time outdoors with their guests, enjoying canapés and lawn games before making their way into the marquee, where The Turpentine Tree’s styling set the scene for a magical evening. “There were red roses hanging from the ceiling of the marquee and red and pale-pink flowers on the tables, set on top of eucalyptus-leaf arrangements, and the marquee was covered in fairy lights,” Jilan recalls. “It was even more beautiful at night.” 43
Everything went to plan and Jilan says the couple enjoyed their wedding immensely: “Both Omar and I were so calm on our wedding day – it was stress-free and we just had so much fun. We were so glad that we had the opportunity to share the day with my beautiful family members and our close friends. Unfortunately Omar’s parents could not join us, as they live overseas in Dubai.” After the celebrations, the newlyweds began their life together. Jilan recalls: “On the way home we stopped for petrol and bought our favourite drink and a packet of chips to snack on during the drive back to our new home as husband and wife.” BML

TRUE LOVE
Kristie
Benjamin AND
MEGALONG VALLEY
LOCAL LOVEBIRDS KRISTIE AND BENJAMIN SWAPPED MOUNTAIN LIFE FOR TOP END TROPICS BUT RETURNED TO WED IN A HOMEMADE AND HEARTFELT BOHO CEREMONY AMONG THE VINES IN MEGALONG VALLEY. High-school sweethearts Kristie and Benjamin Reid grew up in the lower Blue Mountains, where love blossomed from their very first encounter. “Benjamin says he saw me across the room at a school camp and was captivated by my smile,” Kristie recalls. “He said he ‘felt sparks’ and decided he had to get to know me.”
Words: Jacqueline Forster and Kristie Reid.
A year later, after many awkward and shy conversations, and despite hearing schoolyard warnings about Kristie’s four protective brothers, Benjamin asked Kristie to date him. “He walked me home from school every afternoon, despite living in the opposite direction,” says Kristie. Ten years after that first look, Benjamin watched Kristie walk through a flower-covered archway at Dryridge Estate to marry him. Benjamin, an electrician, and Kristie, a preschool teacher, left the mountains in 2014 to pursue adventure in Darwin, Northern Territory, but were drawn back to their childhood home to marry among family and friends. 47

the most amazing gifts of time and thoughtfulness.
“For us it was significant to declare our commitment in the place where our love began to bloom,” says Kristie. “When I saw the view from Dryridge Estate, I was giddy. The beauty of the vistas and bushland in the Blue Mountains is breathtaking, and we knew it would make a stunning backdrop for our ceremony. “We also wanted our guests to experience whimsy and magic, and a drive through the mountains and down through fernladen glens into Megalong Valley certainly delivers.” The ceremony, held in Dryridge Estate’s marquee, was made cosy and love-filled by Kristie and Benjamin’s humanist ceremony, which included deeply personal readings from close family and friends, and a poem read by the bride. “We were blessed to have family conduct our ceremony. Benjamin’s uncle, Merv Gardner, is a marriage celebrant and presided over the important legal parts, while Caleb Watson, my eldest brother, led us through the proceedings.”
Nieces, nephews and friends’ children formed a band of woodland faeries, leading the way to the ceremonial archway with a trail of autumn leaves. And Kristie’s twin brother, Daniel, was the ‘bridesman’, holding a book bouquet that was used in readings throughout the ceremony. “I loved the intensity of emotions as the ceremony drew near; excitement, nervousness, anticipation and, foremost, overwhelming love,” recalls Kristie. “When I finally held Benjamin’s hands and looked into his eyes, everything else faded away.” Benjamin says he just loved Kristie! The theme for the wedding was ‘winter eclectic bohemian’, with an emphasis on cosy and conversational. Many of the styling elements were thrifted, handmade or borrowed from family and friends. Kristie also handmade her own amazing wedding dress, using materials sourced from thrifted clothes and curtains, and dyed with earl grey tea.
49
“I was still finishing my dress off as I was donning it only an hour before the ceremony,” she laughs. Having acclimatised to Darwin weather, winter in the Blue Mountains came as a shock to the pair and Kristie happily wore sheepskin Ugg boots for the reception. “We had 120 guests, with family travelling from all over the country to join us,” adds Kristie, the bridal party being made up of Kristie’s brother Daniel and the couple’s best friends from school and university – Maid of Honour Samantha Elliott and Bridesmaid Sophie Russell for Kristie, and Best Man Samuel Brent and groomsmen Timothy Nellies and Angus Logar for Benjamin. “Our family and friends got behind our vision for an eclectic boho celebration wholeheartedly, and contributed the most amazing gifts of time and thoughtfulness, plus handy skills like arranging floral bouquets, baking cookies and hand-making macrame wall hangings, pallet tables, cushion covers and more,” says Kristie.
Despite the beauty of the setting and whimsical love-in the couple had created, Kristie says not everything went to plan: “Our wedding was rife with mishaps – from Benjamin accidentally chipping my front tooth from an exuberant kiss in a practice ceremony several weeks prior to a call from a Telstra telemarketer interrupting the processional being played on a smartphone. Needless to say there was a short pause, much laughter and a frantic hang up!” The wedding caterers also got a little lost, which delayed dinner, and rain threatened the outdoor ceremony. “But, incredibly, by letting the mishaps roll by with a laugh, we were lifted up and overwhelmed by the love of our family and friends, who jumped in to problem solve,” says Kristie. “The late start with our catering meant we held our speeches before dinner and laughed and cried together, then all tucked into the most delicious Brazilian barbecue.” Although it was unusual timing, it was a blessing when later a blackout in the Megalong Valley caused the venue to lose power. “Out came more candles and a cosy buzz of conversation filled the marquee,” Kristie recalls. “Our talented musician, Willem Roorda, performed acoustic serenades and was soon joined by musical guests who improvised a rustic bush band using tin pails and sticks. “We danced around the fire pits by candlelight as our guests enthusiastically sang and clapped. My brother, Joel, carried the wedding cake around the whole marquee, illuminated by flashlights on smartphones, to ensure everyone saw how beautiful it was before we cut it in the dark, surrounded by the glow of tangible love and joy. This kind of magic cannot be preconceived.” BML

FLOWERS
ETHICAL
Blooms AN EPIPHANY, IN THE FORM OF A HEALTH SCARE, SET BLUE MOUNTAINS FLORIST CELINE WATZ ON A PATH TO LOW-TOX LIVING AND SOWED THE SEED FOR A NEW VENTURE GROWING ORGANIC FLOWERS.
Born-and-bred Blue Mountains girl Celine Watz is part of a new wave of farmer florists growing spray-free blooms for the wedding and cut-flower industries. Originating in the United States, the movement champions organic growing methods and seasonality, and had instant appeal for Celine, who combines her two loves – floristry and gardening – in her business, Floral by Nature. But it hasn’t always been life in the slow lane for Celine. “After school I completed certificate courses in Floristry, Advanced Design and Horticulture at Richmond TAFE and worked at various florists in the mountains,” Celine explains. “I loved my work but was forced to give up floristry about four years ago due to a health scare.” After the birth of her daughter, Indi, Celine began experiencing medical issues related to her thyroid: “It prompted me to look at my diet and lifestyle; everything I was putting on my skin, what I was cooking with, what I was drinking. I got really strict with myself, reducing chemicals and additives, and trying to live a low-tox life as much as possible.” Celine’s approach paid off and, over the course of a year, she healed herself. “Doctors had been talking about surgery to remove my thyroid but I managed to get myself well by paying attention to diet and lifestyle,” she explains. 57
The experience also made Celine examine her previous life as a florist and what effect constant exposure to pesticide residues on flowers may have had. “I started to research the cut-flower industry and was really shocked to learn that not only are flowers heavily sprayed at flower farms, but imported flowers are also fumigated upon arrival in Australia,” she says. According to australiaflowerindustry.com.au (which quotes the Australian Bureau of Statistics as its source), approximately 10 per cent of flowers sold in Australia are imported: “…mainly roses from Kenya and India, premium roses from Colombia and Ecuador, orchids from Singapore and Thailand, chrysanthemums from Malaysia and South Africa, and carnations from China and Vietnam.” Many of these countries have dubious health or labour standards, such as Kenya, where workers endure appalling conditions and environmental damage from pesticide run-off is degrading once fertile land and water. It is little wonder that when it came to returning to her profession, Celine decided to eschew traditional floristry for life as a farmer florist. “I just didn’t want to expose myself to pesticides anymore,” she says. “I’m also really passionate about protecting our environment and eco-systems, so felt pretty ashamed that I had been supporting one of the highest pesticide-using industries worldwide. It soon became really clear that if I wanted to continue as a florist, I would need to grow flowers organically myself.” Thankfully, conscious-choice consumerism is on the rise. “It is hard to compete with the mass produced and imported 58
flower trade, but what I do attracts a different kind of client,” says Celine. “My customers seek out ‘slow’ and appreciate being kind to the planet. They are people who want flowers that haven’t been shipped from the other side of the world, clocking up thousands of ‘flower miles’ then being fumigated before they end up in your home. And they want flowers that are a little bit different from your everyday florist-shop varieties.” To that end, Celine and husband Tristan now grow a mix of annuals and perennials, including heirloom and rare varieties, on a 104-acre property in the beautiful Kanimbla Valley, where Tristan is building their forever home. The flowers, grown from seed – “Outside, where the bees can appreciate them, too” – are carefully selected specifically for cut flowers to ensure good ‘vase life’, beautiful fragrance and strong, healthy stems. From small beginnings in the backyard of their Medlow Bath house, where Celine experimented with a small crop of zinnias, sunflowers, cosmos and dahlias, business has bloomed. “It has been a whirlwind,” she admits. “To our absolute delight, the response has been overwhelmingly positive and my little patch could barely keep up with demand.” Selling through Facebook and the Blue Mountains Food Co-op, in Katoomba, word quickly spread and wedding enquiries and business proposals started rolling in. “I feel so fortunate to be able to turn my dream into a business,” Celine says. “I get great satisfaction from being a part of the whole process, from seed to vase. I nurture and love my flowers from the moment they germinate to the time they leave my hands.”

GROUP LOVE
“It’s a good way to connect and share knowledge about the revolution,” Celine says. And although organic certification is still a way off for Floral by Nature, organic principles are employed. “I’ve always gardened without chemicals but I’m still learning. We’ve built the soil up with certified organic cow manure, so it’s full of worms and really healthy. And so far I’ve been lucky with pests and diseases. I’m still squashing aphids with my fingers and there are so many lady bugs in the garden, which really helps.” Like running any farm, it’s hard work, with most days spent weeding, digging, planting, watering, picking and then arranging, styling and delivering, in between looking after three children ranging in age from three to 15. As the business grows, poly tunnels will extend the off season, but for now Celine can savour some down time over the winter months to plan, prepare beds and order seeds, bulbs and tubers.
60
we finish setting up “ When all the fields of flowers, we hope to have enough to supply the whole local community and wedding industry.
“
The Kanimbla and Hartley valleys are fast becoming the organic food (and flower) bowl of the mountains. Celine has joined forces with her likeminded neighbours – organic farmers Fabrice Rolando of First Farm Organics, Ebony Wynne and Edwina McCarron of Providence Hill Produce, and Erika Watson and Hayden Druce from Epicurean Harvest – all of whom meet monthly to share ideas and comradeship.
Some of her plans include growing edible flowers such as calendula, cornflowers, snapdragons and roses for local restaurants, bakers and caterers, and making use of the natural resources on the property. Weaving workshops are also in the offing, using willow branches and reeds growing along the river. It’s a big dream but one Celine is determined to fulfil: “When we finish setting up all the fields of flowers, we hope to have enough to supply the whole local community and wedding industry.” BML

AMY CHRISTIE DOESN’T BELIEVE THE OLD ADAGE, ‘NEVER WORK WITH CHILDREN OR ANIMALS’. HER HEARTFELT BUSINESS, WEDDING PAWS, ENSURES YOUR FURRY FRIENDS WON’T JUST GET TO THE CHURCH ON TIME BUT WILL PLAY A STARRING ROLE IN YOUR CEREMONY. What services does Wedding Paws provide?
Are dogs the only pets people want to include in wedding ceremonies?
We do everything from transporting your pets to and from your wedding ceremony or photo session, dressing your pets, supervising and caring for your pets throughout your ceremony, assisting with your pet’s wedding role, providing walks, potty breaks, food and water, disposing of all pet waste, and even pet minding on the night of your wedding.
So far I have only worked with dogs but I have had queries about including birds, horses and even a python in wedding ceremonies.
Why do people want pets at their wedding?
The funniest was when the mother-in-law was walking her son’s Poodle down the aisle and it stopped halfway for a loo break, and the cutest was when I had a flower girl and page boy walk their Aunty and Uncle’s Pug and French Bulldog down the aisle together – that really was cuteness overload! The most emotional wedding was one of the first jobs I did as Wedding Paws – the couple’s beloved Labrador had been hit by a car the week before the wedding but survived, and the bride arranged for him to be standing outside the chapel doors as a surprise for the groom. I had tears streaming down my face.
Including your pet in your wedding is no different to inviting your family and friends. Some people wouldn’t dream of getting married without their fur babies. How did you become interested in working with animals? When I was getting married in 2012, I really wanted my two pups to be at our wedding but found that nobody offered this sort of service – there was a real gap in the market. Our girls were part of the family and I didn’t want any of our wedding guests to have the pressure of watching them then having to take them home. Plus, I LOVE animals… I’m that girl that will stop you in the street just to pat your dog. So, what better industry for me to work in! Working with pets and being part of someone’s special day gives me so much satisfaction. 62

Do you have a dog or other pets of your own? We had two Shar-Peis when Wedding Paws was launched in 2013 but we lost our eldest girl two years ago. Now we just have Chloe. BML

When did you first dream of becoming a couturier, and who was your biggest influence? I’ve always been drawn to fashion. Even as a child I can remember the fashion sections in The Australian Women’s Weekly and Vogue magazines, which my grandmother, Rosa, would have around the house. My grandmother was one of the earliest influences in my life – she was an elegant country lady who constantly busied herself with some kind of sewing or craft project. The beauty and singularity of her handmade garments made a lasting impression on me – my love of craftsmanship and hand-finished details is an integral part of my couture work to this day. Where did you train and did anyone in particular mentor you? I studied Fashion Design at TAFE in Sydney. Although I didn’t have any particular mentors, I’ve been extremely lucky to have worked with some of Sydney’s best bridal couturiers, all of whom have inspired my desire to create beautiful silhouettes and classic cuts that never go out of fashion. They also helped to give me an ability to listen and understand each client and create a gown that exceeds their expectations. Describe the bridal gowns you design and the fabrics you prefer to use. My gowns draw from classic silhouettes of the ’50s and ’60s, with nipped waists and flowing skirts. My fabrics of choice are beautiful pure silks, French lace and delicately beaded tulles sourced from France, Italy and Switzerland, which are exclusively designed and are limited-batch runs. I’m always in search of vintage fabrics and laces that today’s manufacturing is unable to replicate. I truly love creating one-of-a-kind pieces that reflect each client’s personality and are something I always hope will become a family heirloom. Are there any specific shapes you are currently favouring? I’m loving the resurgence of the tea or midi-length gowns, which are gaining popularity at the moment – they are perfect for a more intimate or garden-style wedding without sacrificing the glamour and drama of a big wedding gown. The brides I’ve created tea-length gowns for have commented on what a great choice the length was, and how happy and comfortable they were – this shorter length allows the bride to move freely throughout the evening. These gowns are also perfect for altering after the wedding into spectacular evening or cocktails gowns.
What are you currently inspired by? I’ve always been inspired by the creative genius of design from the houses of Dior, Valentino and Balenciaga – they have always created clean, glamorous silhouettes that have stood the test of time. I’m also inspired by old Hollywood glamour and stars of the Golden Age, such as Marlene Dietrich, Ava Gardner and Lauren Bacall, to name just a few. In contrast to my bridal couture business, I also work intimately with some of Australia’s leading actresses from film, television and the performing arts industries. This inspires me to create gowns with a more modern twist on classic designs. I love to create and design one-off gowns for red-carpet events and opening nights, such as the TV Week Logie Awards and the Australian Academy of Cinema & Television Arts (ACCTA) Awards. What do you most love about working with brides and bridal parties? A bride’s input into the creative process is integral and one of the most important parts of what I do. I enjoy the process of getting to know the bride and what inspires her, what her inspiration is for the wedding, and her thoughts and feelings on what her dream gown looks like. To me, the process of creating a gown has to be fun and personal, and has to reflect the bride’s personality. I’m always excited by being part of the evolution of the gown through a collaborative process. What’s the best thing about living and working in the Blue Mountains? Living and working in the Blue Mountains is in stark contrast to my city bridal studio. My home studio in the mountains is tranquil, with beautiful, fresh mountain air, compared to the hustle and bustle of my fast-paced city clientele. I’m always more relaxed in the mountains and truly believe we have some of the best wedding venues in New South Wales. Do you have a favourite wedding venue in the Blue Mountains? My favourite would have to be Lilianfels Resort & Spa, in Katoomba. It has the old-time glamour of the Victorian era, which I love, with beautiful gardens, and the staff and management are world-class and attentive to your needs. Lilianfels has, unquestionably, the most glorious vistas overlooking the Jamison Valley. BML daniellearmont.com.au 67
The timeless elegance of this 1950s ruby red gown always makes me think of Grace Kelly being serenaded by Frank Sinatra and Bing Crosby. I can’t help but think she may have inspired American designer Joseph Whitehead when he created this lush silk taffeta ball gown.

Made for a red carpet moment, this fabulously quirky but divinely elegant dress is by the celebrated young designer Prabal Gurung, whose fans include Sarah Jessica Parker, Anne Hathaway and the former First Lady, Michelle Obama. I would love to stand on a promontory overlooking the magnificent Grose Valley in the Blue Mountains wearing this, feeling the delicate ‘feathers’ lift in the breeze. Something about this dress makes you want to preen in a grand setting. Perhaps that’s exactly what Gurung intended.
There are few more breathtaking views in the world than the one from the Hydro Majestic Hotel terrace, which overlooks the Jamison Valley in Australia’s Blue Mountains. As I’m lucky to have this glorious vista on my doorstep, it features regularly in my personal and professional life. The sight of the shimmering mountains covered in hazy blue eucalypts never fails to inspire me. It brings to life the images 19th century landscape painter, Eugene von Guérard, captured in his dramatic landscapes of the area. When I showcase The Darnell Collection, it is my favourite backdrop for fashion shoots of any decade. Usually I’m posing beautiful models in the collection’s vintage ensembles, but on this occasion I was the one being primped. Standing on the terrace in my to-die-for Valentino black silk velvet evening gown, the photographer’s camera clicking away as hotel guests looked on, I couldn’t have asked for a better setting. Only a gown like this could compete with such a magnificent backdrop.

Shower
GATHER YOUR BESTIES, POP THE BUBBLY AND REVEL IN A COSY CRAFTERNOON OF FLOWER CROWNS AND CULINARY TREATS.
When Hannah Lange of Picnics by Hannah and Trish Carter of Blue Mountains Floral Designs first worked together on a photo shoot, they discovered a certain simpatico. “We found a great synergy between our businesses and quickly realised that we work really well together,” explains Trish. When Hannah followed up by inviting Trish to join her bridal shower booking with a flower crown tutorial, Trish couldn’t wait. “Trish and I have the same taste in everything, so our collaborations just work so effortlessly,” Hannah concurs. Trish ran the workshop and supplied all the fresh florals and equipment needed for each guest at the shower, while Hannah created a beautifully styled picnic spread. The bride-to-be, Jenna Seymour, hails from Glenmore Park in Sydney’s western suburbs and is a former Miss Earth (2012) and professional model. Her bride tribe was made up of friends and family: Alexandra and Verity Coles, Courtney Attwell, Andrea Dunne, Kate Anthonise, Kely Russell, Tayla and Susie Seymour, Lauren Vella, Ilona Blake, Daphne Kneale and Ashleigh Andison. 95
The wind had been blowing a gale the week of the bridal shower, so Hannah decided to hire a bell tent from Nomadic Belle. “This was a last-minute decision to save the picnic from blowing away,” she says. “The wild weather just added to the excitement and the tent really took the styling to another level.” “The beautiful boho-chic styling made the day so cosy,” says Trish. “And the girls were lots of fun to work with and really quite creatively talented when it came to making their flower crowns. There were lots of giggles and newfound skills.” After the picnic, the bride tribe headed off to watch Jenna’s favourite National Rugby League team, the Parramatta Eels, play – quite the contrast to the girly crafternoon! TRISH CARTER “Blue Mountains Floral Designs is a studio-based wedding and event florist with an eco-thoughtful ethos. We are pro same-sex marriage and a really easygoing and organised business to work with. My inspirations come from looking around me daily when out and about in the beautiful Blue Mountains. Anything green, ferny, organic and a little bit bohemian gets my creative juices flowing. Being an inspired florist can be a bit of a traffic hazard though, especially when I’m out driving around and see an amazing plant or tree on the side of the road that really catches my eye!”
96
HANNAH LANGE “I grew up in the Blue Mountains, however left eight years ago to travel and live in different places. I returned at the beginning of 2017 after my son started walking and I very quickly realised I couldn’t live in an apartment anymore. I’ve worked in the Indigenous not-for-profit sector on and off for the past 10 years, mainly in events management, and have also worked for festivals, in media and even lived and worked at an animal refuge in the Amazon for a bit! Picnics by Hannah was born from the urge to have a creative outlet and having the flexibility to fit in with being a mum. I offer three main services – couples and group picnics, gourmet grazing platters and prop hire. The Blue Mountains landscape inspires me to create unique picnic set-ups. And I’m a hopeless romantic so a lot of my inspiration comes from loving love.”

HISTORY
RETRO
Romance PROVIDING COUPLES WITH THE ULTIMATE TRANSPORT EXPERIENCE IS ALL PART OF THE FINE OLD-FASHIONED SERVICE AT BLUE MOUNTAINS VINTAGE CADILLACS.
Donald Millar was in his mid twenties when he first got behind the wheel of a vintage vehicle. “I was trying to work up the courage to ask Dad if I could drive his car, then out of the blue he said, ‘It’s about time you drove her’.” Donald’s father, Donald Millar Senior, was referring to ‘Flora’ – the fabulous 1929 LaSalle Phaeton he purchased in 1954. It comfortably seats four, is cherry red in colour and remains in absolutely immaculate condition. “Flora is named after my mother, who learned to drive in the vehicle,” Donald explains. “When we were children, we thought everybody’s parents had an old car in the shed. My brothers and I knew the sound of the motor – we could be playing inside, hear Dad turn the car on in the shed and be there in less than a minute.” Flora is one of three vintage vehicles in the Blue Mountains Vintage Cadillacs fleet. Named after the legendary Hollywood actress, ‘Ava’ (Gardner) is a dark-blue 1928 LaSalle Five-Passenger Coupe, while ‘Ella’ (Fitzgerald) is a blue convertible 1929 LaSalle Five-Passenger Landau Cabriolet. Based in the upper mountains, the Millars started their family business back in 2003 with a view to servicing the local wedding industry. Donald has been sharing his passion for vintage vehicles with Blue Mountains locals and visitors from all over the globe ever since.
“We can transport up to 12 people and our cars are regularly used for weddings that take place at numerous venues across the mountains,” says Donald, who ensures all his staff are dressed in formal attire and provide a high standard of service. “Some places that really stand out for me and perfectly suit the cars are Yestergrange, Everglades Historic House and Gardens, Silvermere Guesthouse, The Carrington Hotel and the iconic Hydro Majestic Hotel.” If you love the idea of having one of the vehicles in your wedding photos, Donald says they are available for short ‘special guest’ appearances. “They definitely help to make wedding photos truly spectacular,” he adds. Along with transporting wedding parties in style, Donald takes guests on long and winding tours of the Blue Mountains region. “This is a growing aspect of our business. Our tours usually run for three hours and are designed to be as relaxed as a drive in the 1920s would have been. We might stop at Wentworth Falls Lake, then drive around admiring some of the area’s historic properties and gardens before enjoying a meal – either morning tea, lunch, high tea or dinner,” he says. “Exploring the breathtaking scenery of one of the most recognisable landscapes on earth in one of our cars is a very special experience.” BML bluemountainsvintagecadillacs.com.au 101

“We have been together for more than 10 years and in that time we’ve each been supported and accepted into one another’s families. Finally having equality means our relationship is no longer perceived as lesser than anyone else’s. Equality also means future generations will not endure the discrimination we’ve lived through; it means we can now stand in front of our family and friends and finally be married. Darren proposed and I said ‘Yes’, and we are having our dream wedding at Lilianfels Resort & Spa in October 2018.”
