Foreword

Letter from the President Before diving in I am proud to present the 2014-2015’s Executive Board’s Annual Report, communicating our activities were undertaken after we took up duties in August 2014, but that will have an impact well into the future. Each committee year in JADE brings outstanding results and evolution in the way we work and act. Each team brings improvement to external and internal activities and adds another brick of good practices and knowledge to the bridge we are building, a bridge between young and young adulthood, between University and the market. I am happy that my team and I could consolidate this bridge and achieve wonderfully our goals and commitments. We have had more than 50 people working constantly or sporadically with us this year, by far the biggest team by now, a fact that allowed us to finish over 50 projects this year, internal and external. Without their support we probably would have never had the courage to launch so many ideas and develop this year as we did, but most important we couldn’t have made our platform happen, because together we grow.

Ioana David, President of JADE 2014-2015

I am pleased that our values let events like Junior Enterprise World Conference, Generations Club and JADE Spring Meeting happen and for this we have a long list of “thank you” to give, especially to our friends at Bayer MaterialScience, EY and Microsoft. We had the joy to have fruitful results from the events as well, having two new potential members in Europe by the end of the summer, Croatia and Sweden and more than five other interested parties and a strong collaboration with the European Parliament and European Commission. Most notable, after a great deal of shared thinking, consultation and refinement, JADE will publish a new Strategic Plan that will guide all our work for the next three years. This plan has a fresh young visionary check-point for JADE aiming restructuring and reimagining the way we talk about JADE, but keeping on being a catalyst between our Passion, Professionalism and People. I would like by this way to thank my extended team all over Europe for being so dedicated and present, even if in distance, to thank the International Managers for being an inspiration to our activities and last but not least my amazing team who this year have been my friends, my co-workers, my bother and joy, my family.

Testimonials

What do they say? Words from some of our supporters:

Jan Mühlfeit (former Chairman Europe, Microsoft Corporation) “Microsoft have worked in close partnership with JADE for several years. We know JADE to be one of the most passionate and effective student organisations on the world, and are hugely excited about the work that we will continue to do together, in the years to come.”

José Manuel Barroso (former President of the European Commission)

Carlos Moedas (Commissioner Research, Science and Innovation, European Commission)

‘’I would like to stress the role played by organisations like JADE, and the importance of Junior Enterprises as learning tools and bridges between university and the business world, particularly in a European context”.

Junior Entrepreneurs are “young innovative minds, driven by an unstoppable motivation to contribute to Europe’s economy. We need the kind of open innovation that JADE promotes. One that entails two things: collaboration and international reach. JADE’s international network of 400 Junior Enterprises in 3 continents is exactly what I want to see more of in Europe.”

The JADE student network aims to help students in developing technical and interpersonal skills for entrepreneurship and to practice corporate social responsibility. This is expected to impact on the productivity of the workforce and to have a positive impact on the business world. About JADE

So... tell me about yourself JADE IS... JADE is a student NGO that focuses on fostering entrepreneurship among young people, thus our motto “Students fostering entrepreneurship”. We focus on a big gap the ecosystem has in Europe - the mismatch between what University teaches and what companies want. A long time ago, 47 years ago more exactly, in Paris, a group of students noticed this challenge and they wanted to make a change, to innovate their learning experience.

A Junior Enterprise

can be a business consultancy, marketing agency, a prototype incubator or many others. Before they graduate from University, students in Junior Enterprises work with real clients and receive remuneration for products or services which they entirely develop and manage. The companies get great value by accessing quality services at a competitive price and the universities get more involved professional students. Their activity is normally linked to a university, and often professors contribute as mentors. This creates a perfect environment to get the right experience and lifelong skills that make Junior Entrepreneurs adaptable and empowered to put their ideas into action. This is why we believe that the Junior Enterprise concept is the best of two worlds: business and education.

They created the first Junior Enterprise, a non for profit student organization that would teach students by getting them involved in doing. Now in JADE we focus on improving the learning experience of students to an integrated 360 degree view and a great way to bridge the gap between Universities and Businesses. A Junior Enterprise is a student non-profit business that invests its turnover into its members educational and professional development.

The right skills in a dynamic working world One of the main facts that we strive to change is that there is a big gap between the skills that students learn in the University and what the postgraduating world expects from them. This is proved by the fact that there are over 2 million unfilled positions in the EU and a hot need of entrepreneurship. We believe that Europe is in need of flexible professionals with a broad range of skills. This means that the development of personal skills like communication, creativity or analytical thinking and how we manage to apply them in our professional lives are becoming much more relevant in today’s context. The Junior Enterprise concept helps the students to develop abilities that not only will lead to a more successful career, but they will improve the way they look at life.

Junior Entrepreneurs

are innovative, driven and motivated by building a better economical ecosystem, thus they are THE investment we want to make in our future. This investment is based on the purpose of the profit we make. A junior Enterprise will be working with either SMEs, start-ups or multinationals offering services at accessible prices. This is how they ensure opportunities for entrepreneurs and the growth of start-ups.

JEWC 2014 – Where it all started

Moreover the money is rolled in informal education for the members of the Junior Enterprise by sending them to specialized trainings and events, to be sure they are aware of the trending practices in the business world.

Overview of the year 2014-2015

The amazing time of 2014-2015 How does this year fit our long term plans? JADE as you know is a complex entity and our biggest challenge each year is to keep a constant continuity of our activities due to our dynamic and fast human resources structure. For this we have created a strategic cycle of three years. The strategy works on the calendar year whereas the team works on terms from August to August; this is due to our aim to preserve a vision – thus we ask a team to work on the vision of the team before them until December but also to create their own, from January on. We are now in the third year of the current strategy, driving it to completion. We started this cycle in 2013 with the focus on the sustainability of the Headquarters, focusing on our financial situation, process mapping, strategy creation and human resources. We followed to the next year, 2014, by focusing on the development of our members and the strengthening of the bonds between countries.

Present days Coming back to 2015, our focus was to improve communication from JADE HQ and complete the vision of being more present for our stakeholders. We did this by highlighting our projects through more transparent means and focusing on an integrated brand manual by redesigning our logos and visual identity. Moreover we focused on participation in events as speakers but also as guests and by pushing the limits in organizing JADE events.

9 | JADE Annual Report 2014-2015

Microsoft supporting our journey To tackle our challenges we have signed an agreement with Microsoft Education during the Generations Club 2014. The event was hosted together with Microsoft Innovation Center, the Education branch and Mr. Jan Muhelfeit, the Chairman of Microsoft at that time.

Steps in the future The next strategic cycle will start in 2016 and end in 2018, incorporating in the middle the 25th anniversary of JADE, thus we will continue the branding restructuring and a strong focus on the issue of Entrepreneurship in Europe by collaborating with EU institutions and the private sector. We believe we are experts in student entrepreneurship and our goal is to bring the voice of students entrepreneurs to the heart (and ears) of Europe.

The new Strategic plan will focus on building an entrepreneurial attitude in students and then changing that attitude into a mentality. We recognize the potential they have and the pool of skills they can develop, thus we want to contribute to the fast developing technological entrepreneurship by steering the learning experience towards the STEM & ICT skills.

The agreement is named the Education Transformation Agreement and it aims at an innovative learning, by collaborating with Microsoft we create a senior-junior exchange through workshops and other learning tools to enhance STEM skills and their appeal to students.

Opening Ceremony and the Big Debate

More than 220 students from 15 different countries and 50 guests from private and public sector (including more than 20 represented companies) gathered together in various settings, under the patronage of MEP José Manuel Fernandes. The participants attended workshops, networking activities, informal nights, one high level Opening Ceremony and the Gala Dinner that set a new standard for the Excellence Awards – European Awards for Junior Enterprises, with the highest participation rate in the history of the network.

During JADE Spring Meeting Opening Ceremony, five panelists debated the entrepreneurial ecosystem in Europe and its power to inspire the new generation to help the economy. Taking the corporate side were Mr. Alessandro Cenderello (EY) and Ms. Alexa Joyce (Microsoft) and on the public side were Mr. Florian Iwinjak (UNIDO) and Mr. Marko Curavic (DG Enterprise and Industry, European Commission). While the panelists tried to finish on a positive note, the participants voted 75% that youth are not supported enough across Europe to be entrepreneurial.

The year 2014-2015

The Biggest Excellence Awards in history In 2015, Excellence Awards, the European Awards for Junior Enterprises, awarded every year during JADE Spring Meeting, had more than 30 applications. At the same time, every JADE Confederation was represented. After tens of applications to just 6 categories, the finalists arrived in Brussels and did not disappoint. The list of this year’s greatest is:

Junior Enterprise of the Year: Marketing Méditerranée (CNJE) In 2014, Marketing Méditerranée (CNJE, France) managed to do 54 professional projects, change its marketing, sales and customer relationship management practices to increase efficiency and boost its turnover by 152%, breaking the 500.000 euros barrier. The JE managed to work with multinational corporations and subcontract on the same projects several other Junior Enterprises.

The Most Promising Junior Enterprise: Junior ISIT (CNJE) Founded in 2010, the Junior Enterprise clocked no less than 120.000 euros total turnover since its creation and founded a partnership with one of the most powerful JEs in France in their first year. They have served clients such as ING, Renault or Ubisoft and ran 46 projects in 2014 alone. All of this in fields that are not that common in the network such as languages, international communication and media monitoring.

The Most Entrepreneurial JE: JEME Bocconi (JADE Italia)

The Mose Social Responsible Project: JuniFEUP (JADE Portugal)

JEME Bocconi opened JEME Bocconi Shanghai in 2014, that enables ’’cross-market projects between Italy and China” and the launched the book called Un’impresa da universitari – Storia della prima Junior Enterprise italiana, about Italian JEs and the movement. JEME also managed 15 external projects (1 focused on environmental conservation), 17 trainings (a total of 63 hours of training per member), 8 internal projects and 3 new services and products in addition to last year.

JuniFEUP did an excellent job on helping another student association (U.DREAM) re-imagine and create their website. The project was done for free and it took no less than 45 days of work. The Junior Enterprise accepted the project in order to help the organization continue their mission to help health impaired children to have a happier life in Portugal.

The Most International JE: WBC UK WBC UK is by far one of the Junior Enterprises that stand as an example for what multicultural means, with 15 nationalities represented among their members and partnerships across 4 continents. Two of their main projects in 2014 brought them connections with Bangladesh and Uganda.

13 | JADE Annual Report 2014-2015

The Most Innovative Project: SBS-Solvay Student Consulting Club (JADE Belgium) The 2011 founded Solvay Students CLUB took last year an important step forward towards boosting their university’s reputation at international level. Wanting to strengthen the results of Solvay students in international business game competitions they came up with their own, student-led academy.

The year 2014-2015

Junior Enterprise World Conference

2014

Junior Entrepreneurs from 16 countries from 3 continents got together to discuss and share knowledge between all countries who foster the Junior Enterprise Concept and create the Memorandum of Understanding. We hosted between the 7th and 10th of August the Junior Enterprise World Conference, with the help two Junior Enterprises in Geneva, Switzerland: JEHEG and JEG. The Junior Enterprise Global Forum and The Memorandum of Understanding The leaders and representatives from all countries present at the event and organized a World Café. We discussed about the common issues we find regarding Junior Entrepreneurship throughout the world.

The result was the creation of a Memorandum of Understanding to define the concept we are working with. Because this happened very early in the event we had time by the last day of the event to put together all the information learned and create the Memorandum which the country representatives signed at the Closing Ceremony.

Junior Entrepreneurs at JEWC 2014

The Summer JADE Meeting in Coimbra, Portugal, will gather around 300 Junior Entrepreneurs for 4 exciting days. The event’s theme ‘’Think it, make it, sell it!” is about the entrepreneurs’ attitude to forge change in society. The event is going to have a unique format based on classic content, with a central conference with local stakeholders, practical workshops, workshops from Junior Enterprises, but it also brings a package of new additions like: business competitions, Junior Enterprise Exchange sessions, start-up pitches. and a lot of the Portuguese spirit, cuisine and the student campus life.

Success Stories The project started in 2005, after a survey in the network showed that Junior Entrepreneurs are likely or very likely to start their own business right before or very soon after graduation. With this in mind, Success Stories took the format of a brochure showing the ones that made it with their business. The brochure became the signature of the project, and so, between the 2005 and 2014 we had 6 editions.

In 2015, the Success Stories project is bringing 15 inspiring stories of entrepreneurship, advice and tips from some of the most innovative former Junior Entrepreneurs in the network. We are also highlighting the challenges that these entrepreneurs faced, in an effort to underline that failure is a natural occuring phase that one should accept and tackle with responsibility rather than ignore it..

Unfolding entrepreneurs...

To be launched at Summer JADE Meeting 2015 in digital and print format.

...inspiring characters.

New visual dynamics In 2015 we took the image of JADE seriously and we started thinking of how can we improve the perception of the JADE brand. Unlike other major student networks, JADE has a multibrand composed of Junior Enterprises, National Confederations, and the umbrella organisation itself. Therefore, we understood that in order to construct synergy between so many entities we need several different approaces from different angles, and we need to define ongoing processes to constantly evolve the brand into a familliar yet fresh personna, fit for the 21st century and the digital age. After tuning the communication strategy we developed new ways to manage our digital communication. At the same time, key projects have been treated as brands in order start developing new relationships with our Junior Entrepreneurs. All of this is needed because the Junior Enterprise Network is a business ecosystem that never gets old.

Workshop during Generations Club

On the 4th of November JADE organised Generations Club 2014 in Brussels. It was our way of listening to the message of a European society troubled by skills mismatch and youth unemployment. Thirteen networks representing more than 37 million young people were invited to make this message heard at the Microsoft Innovation Centre Brussels; we balanced the high number of youth representatives with guests from both public and private sector,

rounding up seniors from EY and Microsoft, but also from the European Commission DGs. The topic that we tackled to strengthening the challenge of youth unemployment and lack of involvement towards entrepreneurship was the development of skills. Having this in mind we wanted to find our What are the skills youth considered entrepreneurial, how are those skills to be developed and when.

Main conclusions One important conclusion is that all the skills should be developed at different stages, and through different methods. Thus we see the contribution of JADE of uttermost importance to shape the entrepreneurial attitudes in mentalities. As you will see in the report itself, 88% of entrepreneurs need specific training. The Generations Club Panel Discussion

As mentioned in a 2012 report from the European Commission, Junior Entrepreneurs are already 25% more likely to open their own companies after graduation comparing to an average of 10% of students who did not have business related studies.

The year 2014-2015

JEWD (Junior Enterprise World Day) was created in 2014 as a commitment between JADE and Brasil Júnior, the Brazilian Confederation of Junior Enterprises. JEWD happens every year on November 22nd and the main idea was to create a day where the Junior Entrepreneurs from all over the World could celebrate together. In 2014, the campaign started after JEWC (Junior Enterprise World Conference).

With the videos and photos taken during JEWC, JADE started creating the first teasers for the event. These teasers were posted together on Facebook by JADE, Brasil Júnior and JET - Junior Enterprises of Tunisia. JADE and Brasil Júnior also made a Thunderclap Campaign that was able to reach over 600.000 people through social media. In many countries, many Junior Entrepreneurs organised their own events and celebrated JEWD.

sessions following the CDP this year with different focuses, either internal or external. We had talks about how we connect the Junior Enterprises between themselves, how to recruit and handover better, how to better integrate your network, but also more external like Political and Private Affairs or Fostering Entrepreneurship.

Confederations Development Programme The Confederations Development Programme is an older initiative of JADE, reaching this year the 6th round of knowledge sharing. The Confederations Development Program provides our Member Countries with an experience sharing platform that JADE creates and facilitates. The program has two stages, one of information gathering and one of learning out of you improvement areas through coaching or exchange sessions between confederations. This year, besides European Confederations, we also had the participation of Brasil Júnior, the Brazilian Confederation. We have had five different exchange

We aim an yearly margin of 2-3% increase in network quality and this year we achieved 4%, thus more than we set ourselves for. For this reason we will host the first edition of Confederation Awards during the Summer JADE Meeting in Coimbra, Portugal in July 2015. The categories we will award the best performing members will be Junior Enterprise Development, External Development, Integration of the Network, Workforce Focus, Internal Management and Highlight Confederation.

Platform Let’s unite the network by collaboration and connection We are one European network with 20.000 students working in 280 Universities in 12 different countries; knowing each other and working together can be quite challenging due to the geographical distances and the different languages we speak. However we all share the same goal, as Michele Hunt likes to say, doing well by doing good. We needed to bring closer together the Junior Enterprises and to introduce them to all our partners here in Brussels so we took advantage of technology. The past 10 months we developed together with our new partnership with Campus Consult Projektmanagement GmbH a tool to do just that. The unveil of the platform will be at the Summer JADE Meeting on the 25th of July 2015 in Coimbra Portugal, pursuing complete working status starting with September 2015.

19 | JADE Annual Report 2014-2015

The platform will be open to all Junior Enterprises and Confederations and will offer them two advantages. On one hand it creates a virtual environment for knowledge exchange, on the other it will act as market where they can interact with companies that need the services Junior Enterprises provide. 

private CRM system

database for projects and job advertisements from external companies

search engine to find Junior Enterprises and Junior Entrepreneurs in Europe

Furthermore, the platform allows JADE and its members to showcase virtually the size of the network and the value of its people; thus organizations that hadn’t had the opportunity to participate in one of our events can get a feel of it out of the virtual representation.

The biggest achievements of this year’s enlargement activities are two new (unofficial) members of our European Network, Sweden and Croatia who will seek approval of their fusion with the JADE network in the last General Assembly of the Executive Board 2014-2015 in Coimbra.

New projects we are excited about JADE Academy Work at JADE never stops and sometimes projects can be a work of 2-3 teams across the years. We have started in 2014 to structure and plan a network of specialized trainers for JADE from JADE. We recognize the value of multiplying our talent and giving back to the community; we also noticed that sharing experience is much of an art; thus we designed a program through which we would train Junior Entrepreneurs to be trainers so they can share their experience better. During the upcoming term there will be the first implementation of the JADE Academy after one year of researching, resourcing and planning. The first edition of the training boot camp and initiation of the program is scheduled for late October 2015.

From Brussels to the whole world Furthermore, JADE will focus on geographical growth in order to spread the concept to more even additional countries - but more important to additional students. The dream we have is to develop slowly a global network of Junior Enterprises and for that we work in a strong collaboration with our sister networks - Brasil Júnior and Junior Enterprises of Tunisia. According to our Memorandum of Understanding, JADE’s focus areas will hereby be Europe and Africa while Brasil Júnior will focus on the enlargement activities in America and Asia.

Together we grow! This first success.

Global this, Global That As our long term plan is to be able to reach as many students and touch as many minds as possible and our growth is very fast due to new mobility programs, funds and technology, we focus on global projects that will ensure the alignment between continents. For this we have organized in August 2014 the Junior Enterprise World Conference in Geneva, Switzerland that had as a result the Memorandum of Understanding between all who foster the Junior Enterprise concept, after the first ever Junior Enterprise Global Forum. To be sure we know about each other we will create the first Global Junior Enterprise Magazine, which has been planned until now and will be implemented by the team 2015-2016.
