Dear Junior Entrepreneur, First of all, on behalf of the whole JADE Team, I would like to wish you a very happy New Year full of successes.

At the Closing Ceremony of the Summer JADE Meeting 2011 in Vienna, we said a few words about constant changes and the great importance of being able to adapt ourselves quickly. This is going to be particularly true in 2012, as the beginning of the year is already bringing us a lot of uncertainty over our future and the entire world is witnessing some important changes. Nowadays, due to the global financial crisis, the regions that used to have the strongest influence in the world are losing part of their power. For instance, the current situation of the European Union is critical, which affects directly our future in terms of employability and new opportunities as European citizens. However, at least something is clear: we, as Junior Entrepreneurs are the most prepared ones to face the new future in front of us. The people who will have the chance to face the lower barriers to join the labor market or to pursue new projects are going to be the ones who will be better prepared in terms of both technical and soft skills, as well as the ones who will have the strongest international orientation. Indeed, since the differences between the diverse European countries are decreasing and the belief that having an international and multicultural team brings more value to an organization is spreading, this last international component is starting to be more and more important. Moreover, the European institutions have announced this 2012 as the “European Year for Active Ageing and Solidarity between Generations�, and this can be a great reminder of one of the most problematic issues in our network: the generational changes. We encourage you all to learn as much as you can from your predecessors, and to allocate enough time to share your knowledge with your successors, as a key of success for every Junior Enterprise.

To conclude, I would like to say that I have no doubts that Junior Entrepreneurs will be tomorrow leaders. In a world that is changing faster than ever and creating new big challenges, the more prepared and better related people, Junior Entrepreneurs in a network of 20,000 students from 14 different countries, are going to have a decisive role in the development of the future. SME Week JADE participates in a Panel Discussion about Entrepreneurship Education The European Commission and the European Parliament co-organized on 6th and 7th October 2011, in the framework of the SME Week, a two-day event in the capital of Europe. Policy makers and second-chance entrepreneurs from the 27 country members, as well as representatives from the most important European business networks attended this Conference. Its main goals were to provide information on what the European Union and national, regional and local authorities are offering as support to micro, small and mediumsized businesses; promote entrepreneurship so that more people consider becoming an entrepreneur as a career option; and give recognition to entrepreneurs for their contribution to Europe’s welfare, jobs, innovation and competitiveness.

JADE, as an expert in Entrepreneurship Education, was invited by DG Enterprise and Industry from the European Commission, to be a speaker in one of the Workshops: “Nurturing Young Entrepreneurs – the role of Entrepreneurship Education”. Inés Bultó, Secretary General of JADE, took part in the Panel Discussion, together with Tomasz Rudolf, former Junior Entrepreneur and founder of Innovatika, a successful innovation consultancy in Warsaw. They both described the Junior Enterprise concept and its benefits both for students, universities and society in general, as it fosters entrepreneurial mindsets among young people. Indeed, through the Junior Enterprise experience, students in Higher Education have the opportunity to develop not only their technical skills, but also their leadership and team working skills, their proactivity, professionalism and innovative way of thinking. Moreover, Tomasz Rudolf, who had the opportunity to present during the final Plenary Session in the European Parliament his comparison between the creation of a start-up and the pregnancy and birth of a child, stated that “a brochure sponsored by the European Commission about the Junior Enterprise concept changed my life”.

OECD International Conference: Building Quality Jobs in the Recovery JADE speaks about Youth Entrepreneurship at the OECD International Conference in Dublin On 13th and 14th October 2011 took place the OECD International Conference about Building Quality Jobs in the Recovery. This event, co-organized by the OECD and the local agency Pobal, was hosted in Dublin and attracted policy makers, employment experts and universities, among others. The Conference was opened by important personalities such as Sergio Arzeni, Director of the Center for Entrepreneurship, SMEs and Local Development from the OECD and Phil Hogan, Irish Minister for the Environment, Community and Local Government, as well as by a video from László Andor, European Commissioner for Employment, Social Affairs and Inclusion. JADE, as an expert in fostering youth entrepreneurship, was invited by the OECD to attend the “Building Quality Jobs in the Recovery” Conference and to participate both in the Local Initiatives Forum presenting the Junior Enterprise Concept, and in a Workshop about “Supporting business start-ups and youth entrepreneurship” as one of the main speakers. During the Local Initiatives Forum, Inés Bultó, Secretary General of JADE, presented the Junior Enterprise concept as a solution to promote an entrepreneurial mindset among students in Higher Education, and to, therefore, fight against youth unemployment. Indeed, not only students have the opportunity to improve their technical and soft skills during their experience in a Junior Enterprise, but they also have the chance to develop an entrepreneurial

Segio Arzeni opening the conference spirit, extremely useful for all the future challenges young people decide to face. This is why, 58% of Junior Entrepreneurs receive a job offer before graduating and 21% of them create their own company within three years after graduating.

JADE Secretary General also highlighted, during the Workshop “Supporting business startups and youth entrepreneurship”, the definition of entrepreneurship as a competence for life, opposite to the limited definition of entrepreneurship as the act of being an entrepreneur creating new companies. Moreover, she emphasized the role of young people in creating new and innovative solutions to global problems, such as employment, and criticized the absence of young people in the Conference.

European University - Business thematic Forum Innovating together: partnerships for an entrepreneurial Europe University-business cooperation and working in partnership are crucial for innovation to take place. Many different approaches and models for collaborative innovation exist. This thematic forum organized by the European Commission- DG Education and Culture (Lifelong Learning Programme), University of Twente and the European Consortium of Innovative Universities (ECIU) highlighted the educational aspects of innovation systems, in particular how universities working in partnership with economic actors could contribute to an innovative ecosystem. Partnerships around collaborative curriculum design, (skills) training, employability and entrepreneurial learning environments were highlighted in plenary and parallel sessions. Particular focus was given to SMEs and regional aspects. JADE participated at this event as a speaker during the session for Entrepreneurial Learning Environments for Skills Building. Simona Lascu, Vice-President of JADE held a speech

during this session, emphasising how important it is to encourage entrepreneurship since the university time and allow students to risk and experiment and learn during this protective environment through a Junior Enterprise. The first day of the event included a series of opening speeches from Anne Flierman, President of University of Twente, Peter Baur, European Commission, DG Education & Culture, Marja van Bijsterveldt, Minister for Education, Culture & Science and Peter den Oudsten, Mayor of Enschede. The keynote speeches included information about the open innovation inside Siemens, at university level and from European institutions illustrating the role of open innovation for education. The day concluded with information from the European study into University-Business cooperation and about the university-business incubator Kennispark Twente. The three parallel sessions from the second day of the event focused on University– Business cooperation: with Case studies in University – Business Cooperation and Promoting and developing European University–Business Cooperation; Collaborative inter-sectoral curriculum design: for Bachelor and Master and PhD level; and Entrepreneurial learning environments – skills building and student entrepreneurship.

cooperation between higher education institutions and business is crucial for making Europe more innovative and increasing the employability of our future graduates. The activities of the University-Business Forum clearly demonstrate that the situation is evolving in Europe, however substantial differences exist between countries, between regions and between higher education institutions.

inter-disciplinarity and mobility are also gaining importance. Europe needs to deploy its full entrepreneurial capacity in order to achieve the Innovation Union. It is therefore important to nurture entrepreneurial skills at all levels of education and in all disciplines. Universities and businesses will need to work together to focus on building learning environments, which can install and develop entrepreneurial attitudes and skills in young people. Promoting models to stimulate bringing student entrepreneurship into practice is becoming a pre-requisite- and the Junior Enterprise concept is the way to do enhance the entrepreneurial skills and mindset for young people.

Young European Entrepreneurs Seminar 2011 Financing, mentors and internationalization European Economic and Social Committee, Brussels, 16thand 17th November 2011 - The President of the Employers' Group of the European Economic and Social Committee (EESC), Mr. Henri Malosse, hosted the third edition of the "Young European Entrepreneurs' Seminar". The event gathered 43 young entrepreneurs and 12 young professionals from employers' organizations – from 18 European countries.

This Young European Entrepreneurs Seminar aims at allowing an interactive exchange on the following topics:

Some of the topics of the debate included how to solve the high percentage of companies that disappear after 5 years of life, and the concept of entrepreneurship understood in a more open way as key of change in the society trough values and attitudes, among others.

• Making young people's voices heard on issues concerning entrepreneurship, including financing, mentoring and internationalization; • Allowing a direct dialogue with the decisionmakers involved on a daily basis in European affairs; • Encouraging young people towards entrepreneurship; • Supporting the creation of a European identity for the European entrepreneurs. JADE, as an important reference related to entrepreneurial education and internationalization participated in a Panel on Mentorship: mentors, shadowing entrepreneurs and entrepreneurial education in which participated:

Regarding mentorship, JADE explained how the mentoring is one of the most critical points in the Junior Enterprise movement because of the high rotation indicator of human resources, and its importance for the European network, reflected in the moment of creation of business.

The panelists agreed on the importance of mentorship and they discussed how to encourage and motivate successful entrepreneurs to be mentors for the next generation of entrepreneurs. Some solutions had arisen from the participants- suggesting as possible solution giving recognition to entrepreneurs, as well as the possibility to enter in contact with young people with new interesting ideas, in order to start new lines in the existing business or to have interesting possibilities of recruiting.

entrepreneurial education since early age, school, and the need to base this on values, attitude and skills that will allow the new generations to build a more competitive Europe. One of the participants further reinstated this idea by stating that “not only teachers have the responsibility to introduce the concept of entrepreneurship to the students, it is a work that the whole society needs to do”. Commissioner Mr. Simone Baldassari concluded in one of his interventions that it is important to encourage the collaboration between young people and established businesses, thus facilitating the exchange of knowledge between generations: “The non-formal education is a key factor for success that is changing, trough organizations like JADE among others, the concept of the entrepreneur in the society. This is why, the European Commission has a close relationship with these organizations”.

JADE speaks about Youth Employment at the Conference on Youth Employment Conference on Youth Employment organized by the European Youth Forum with the support of the OECD Forum in Paris The European Youth Forum organized, together with the OECD Forum, a Conference on Youth Employment on 13th and 14th December 2011 at OECD Conference Center in Paris. In this two-day conference were discussed different topics related to Youth Employment such as the further regulation of youth labor market, the social unrest in relation to youth unemployment in Europe and the skills mismatch. During the several sessions of the conference, representatives from the OECD, the European Commission and the European Trade Union Confederation, as well as young people representing different youth organizations, had the opportunity to voice their opinion on the topic and propose solutions to the current situation. The Secretary General of the OECD, Ángel Gurría, defined in his speech, youth unemployment as a moral, ethical, political, social and economic challenge. Indeed, all speakers agreed on the urgency of taking some measures to reduce the over 20% of young people between 15 and 24 that are seeking work in the 27 states of the European Union. The last session of the meeting was a Panel Discussion on Future Prospects for Young People in the Labor Market, moderated by Emilie Turunen, the youngest Member of the European Parliament, from the Socialist People’s Party. JADE Secretary General, Inés Bultó, was one of the participants at this Panel Discussion, together with the Director for Employment, Social Affairs and Inclusion from the European Commission, Jean-Louis de Brouwer, and the

JADE Secretary General, Inés Bultó, during the Conference on Youth Employment Deputy Secretary General of the European Trade Union Confederation, Patrick Itschert. Ms. Bultó emphasized that youth unemployment is not only a short-term problem, but an issue that will persist in the future and that might convert young people into a “lost generation”, unless something is done. Moreover, she stressed the importance of entrepreneurial education as a way, not only to promote entrepreneurship as a life option and to fight against the failure stigma, but also to develop an entrepreneurial mindset among young people. By developing their entrepreneurial skills such as selfconfidence, innovative way of thinking, leadership and team working, young people can increase their employability if they decide to start working for a company, as well as their chances to become successful entrepreneurs if they finally choose to create their own firm. Finally, JADE Secretary General criticized the fact that only 3 to 4% of the solutions proposed by the European Commission related to Youth Unemployment are related to entrepreneurship.

Microsoft and JADE sign an Education Alliance Agreement Bringing young European entrepreneurs in fast track Microsoft and JADE, European Confederation of Junior Enterprises signed in Brussels an education alliance agreement encouraging further the entrepreneurial spirit of students in higher education. Microsoft and JADE share similar goals in terms of supporting and assisting young companies to expand their knowledge, to improve their business awareness and to facilitate networking between members throughout Europe. The alliance agreement with Microsoft was an important step for JADE, as the network organization aims to build supporting structures, which will stimulate the development of young people by fostering innovation and sharing best practices. Moreover, through this agreement JADE aims to develop a better communication and enhance the collaborations and knowledge exchange at European level through sharing platforms.

The agreement states that Microsoft will support JADE network by developing the next generation of JE.NET portal. Students and young entrepreneurs will also have access to developer resources, training and support. Together, the two parties will develop a ‘store in the box’, so the entrepreneurs can easily develop their own online stores. Microsoft will also look into the Academic Volume Licensing Program to set conditions for offering discounts to the members of JADE. Finally, Microsoft will also help the students to develop innovative marketing campaigns for which they are eligible for certification.

For this reason the agreement between Microsoft and JADE represents a collaborative approach, enabling companies to be more involved in entrepreneurship education.

Alumni Association of the Confederation of German JEs Alumni from almost 20 years of BDSU history offer their support to all young entrepreneurs active in the JADE network In 2012, the Confederation of German Junior Enterprises (BDSU) will celebrate its 20th anniversary - the alumni movement of young entrepreneurs active in the BDSU is already looking back at 15 years of history. In 1996, the first alumni directory of junior entrepreneurs who had started their professional careers was published. At that time, alumni stayed in touch only via personal networks. In 2001, the „alumni club“ was established. Its members declared in a letter of intent to support the idea of junior enterprises and in particular the BDSU. A growing group of initially 20 alumni began to participate in the BDSU national conferences on a more regular basis. However, all plans to sustainably enhance the networking activities amongst the alumni and to improve the support for the young entrepreneurs and the BDSU as their organisation failed due to lack of organizational

structure and financial means. In the fall of 2007 at the national conference in Munich, it was thus agreed that the alumni network needed a new framework. In May 2008, the alumni association of the Confederation of German Junior Enterprises (BDSU Alumni e.V.) was established by 30 alumni (including JADUS Richard de Vaan and Matteo Ottavi) at the national conference in Darmstadt. Since then, the number of members has increased to now 300 members, covering all generations active in the BDSU, including alumni who – 20 years back – took an active role in the establishment of the BDSU. Under our motto NETWORKING – SUPPORTING – MEETING we are a constantly growing active network of BDSUalumni, supporting the idea of young entrepreneurship. We are open for all former members of Junior Enterprises in the BDSU.

We strive to maintain and extent a personal network between (former) junior entrepreneurs as opposed to the numerous virtual social networks of our times. We offer a platform for personal and professional networking and exchange of ideas. Against this background, we organize alumni events, such as the annual skiing trip, visit to the Oktoberfest in Munich or the alumni strategic meeting, and professional trainings for our members, but also participate regularly in the national conferences of the BDSU. The BDSU Alumni e.V. supports the BDSU and its young entrepreneurs in various ways, for example: • Providing alumni experts for workshops, • Rewarding special engagement for the idea of the junior entrepreneurship with the annual „Alumni Award“ and a financial contribution for the winning team, • Participating in discussions to pass on our learnings from the time we were young entrepreneurs, • Helping individual students with finding internships, • Working on projects to improve the work of junior entrepreneurs, such as the study on

JADE October Meeting 2011 Lille, 14th-16th October 2011 Social Entrepreneurship The Junior Enterprise Skema Conseil had the opportunity to organize the last JADE Event of 2011: the JADE October Meeting 2011. We wanted this event to be on a field that becomes more important every day : Social Entrepreneurship. With 100 JuniorEntrepreneurs from all Europe and Brazil, the JOM11 allowed its participants to know more about a field than can become a great outlet for structures that want to become closer with its clients. Furthermore, Junior Entrepreneurs acquired knowledge with workshops from big corporations such as the one delivered by Sylvie Spalmacin, Executive Vice-President of IBM Smarter Cities Europe. This is what JADE Meetings are all about : developing skills,

knowing more about the world of Junior Enterprises in each confederation. But let’s not forget a key element of those meetings: the ability to build a network with colleagues from many different countries that might end up becoming very good friends. JADE Events such as the JADE October Meeting 2011 are one of the best ways to share best practices between Junior Entrepreneurs from all nationalities and to go International with your Junior Enterprise.

JADE Spring Meeting 2012 Brussels, 8th-11th March 2012 Innovation and Entrepreneurship With the occasion of the 20th Anniversary of JADE and in order to celebrate the unmatched work of the movement in shaping European students´ entrepreneurial mindset, we are delighted to present you the JADE Spring Meeting 2012, which main topic will be “Innovation and Entrepreneurship”. The international conference will take place in the capital of Europe and Headquarters of JADE from 8 th to 11th March. As to celebrate the second decade of the Organization, more than 200 top members of our student entrepreneur network will visit Brussels. Top-notch corporations such as Microsoft and Accenture are key sponsors with an active role in what it is a unique occasion for the city of Brussels to support youth entrepreneurship. Moreover, other institutional partners support JADE on its anniversary and will contribute to building high level networking opportunities for future entrepreneurs.

Accenture will support the event by offering three different workshops to the participants, as well as present their point of view on innovation and entrepreneurship during the Panel Discussion that will take place on Friday 9th March.

Microsoft Corporation will launch an Innovation Lab workshop focused on getting feedback from the most active European students on many of their most disruptive initiatives. This is both a networking and an essential ICT industry trend assimilation opportunity.

Additionally, TiE (The Indus Entrepreneurs), an international organization which main aim is to foster entrepreneurship globally, will also be a key partner at the event. Participants will have the opportunity to listen to Ashok Rao, their CEO and serial entrepreneur with five successful high technology start-ups, on the keys of entrepreneurship.

On a similar note, IBM is supporting the event and its EMEA CEO will deliver a keynote speech during a ceremony organized at the European Parliament with the collaboration of the Member of the European Parliament, Georgios Papanikolaou.

Furthermore, one of JADE oldest partners, the European Institute for Industrial Leadership (EIIL), is also supporting the event by offering many workshops to all participants, which main purpose will be to improve the management of the Junior Enterprises.


Finally, the Excellence Awards will be out one more year. The best Junior Enterprises in four categories will have the opportunity to showcase their best practices to the rest of the network, as well as to show to all JADE stakeholders what Junior Entrepeneurs are capable of.

The meeting will take place from 1st until 3rd of June 2012 in Vienna, the capital of Austria. During this weekend, you can expect: Exciting Program: After all participants arrive Friday morning, the meeting will start with an opening ceremony, followed by two and a half days of interesting presentations and speeches as well as challenging exciting workshops. Incredible Nightlife: You will get to know Austrian food at one of Vienna’s traditional “Heurigen” and enjoy a delicious dinner at a fancy restaurant. Later on, you will enjoy Vienna’s fabulous clubbing scene. Impressing location: The location of the meeting as well as the hotel are situated in the city center of Vienna, from where all important venues can be reached easily. 120 Participants: You have the chance to meet 120 international participants from the European Jade network and experience a great weekend together. Summer JADE Meeting 2012 Mamaia (Romania), 19th-22nd July 2012 International Conference on Intrapreneurship There are less than 7 months left until the largest, most anticipated JADE meeting of the year. Summer JADE Meeting 2012 will take place from the 19th to the 22nd of July, in Mamaia, Romania and will attract over 250 Junior Entrepreneurs from around the world. The event is organized by JADE Romania and it will be even more important as in 2012 is JADE’s 20th anniversary. This year’s main topic of the conference will be intrapreneurship, the concept according to which employees can act and behave as entrepreneurs while working inside a corporate environment. In the last years, the idea of intrapreneurship has been embraced by more and more corporate institutions because it allows the individual to use innovative, risktaking, creative and dynamic approaches towards turning an idea into a profitable finished product or process, all this for the benefit of the company. During the event, 250 Junior Entrepreneurs will have the chance to enjoy 3 days of conferences and workshops on intrapreneurship – the concept, its benefits and

most important, its relevance in today’s business environment. They will also get to interact with a selection of international speakers who will express their views and share their experience on being an intrapreneur. Among these speakers are Steve Price – Director EIIL, Simone Baldassarri – DG Enterprise (European Commission), Marius Ghenea – serial entrepreneur and business angel. Junior Enterprise World Conference 2012 Paraty (Brazil), 6th-10th August 2012 The Junior Enterprise Network meets again in Brazil Little by little, all the amazing plans the JEWC team in Brazil has made to the biggest event of the JEM World are coming true. The big idea of a host city, instead of a host hotel, is already shaking the little beach village of Paraty – the final and obvious choice to receive that many tourists. Final, because the team analised many options in order to satisfy all the junior enterpreneurs who are coming expecting nothing but the best. Obvious, because it’s a touristic town, with very tipical colonial architecture and amazing beaches and waterfalls. Besides, it is already the city where the biggest literary encounter of the country takes place, Paraty’s International Literay Fair (FLIP). Junior Enterprise World Conferecence 2012 will be the biggest event of the planet for those who are or want to be Junior Enterpreneurs. It has been 8 years since Brazil hosted the Conference – the first edition, in 2004, happened in Fortaleza, one of the biggest cities of Brazil's Northeast. This year, from August 6h to 10th, junior enterpreneurs will be invited to increase their experience and to get to know different cultures from the entrepreneurial world, putting together senior and young entrepreneurs - people who have the same thoughts and share the same network, besides their cultural distance. 2,000

participants are expected, 500 of them foreigners. As for Workshops, big names of the political and entrepreneurial international scene are going to be present. It’s the case of Michele Hunt, the revolutionary woman who works with leaders and their teams in order to help their organizations to reach higher levels of participation, teamwork and performance. Her job made the difference in companies such as IBM and Motorola, and she also worked with the former President Clinton himself as the Executive Director of the Federal Quality Institute in the United States. And she will be there for sure.


Professors of Harvard have already confirmed their presence in JEWC too. And soon the participants will be able to do the same. The registration for non-brazilians will open soon, on February 7th. Brazilians will be allowed to register on February 27th. It’s a great opportunity for those who wants to participate on an international event, as well as enjoy some time visiting another country. On the next days, there will be workshops from junior enterprises, challenging activities so that all the enterpreneurs can interact, and much more – wrapping up with Michele Hunt. On August 9th, it all ends with the Awards and a big party – because, after all, we also deserve to have some fun!
