Prison Gate Museum

Experience how it felt to be incarcerated in a prison, with a history that dates back to the Middle Ages. Visit the cell complex, the Knights' Hall, Stock Loft, Torture Dungeon, Interrogation Chamber and Mourning Chamber. Noordeinde Palace: the King at work

Paleis Noordeinde: de koning aan het werk Al vier eeuwen is Den Haag de woonen werkplaats van de Oranjes. Die lange vorstelijke historie is overal tastbaar aanwezig. Omringd door boetiekjes

en galeries ligt Paleis Noordeinde, het werkpaleis van koning WillemAlexander. Aan de wapperende vlag op het dak zie je of de koning aan het werk is. Het paleis is niet open voor publiek. De paleistuin aan de achterzijde is wel gewoon te bezoeken.

The Hague has been the residence of the House of Orange for four centuries. The presence of this royal history can be felt everywhere. The King's working palace, Palace Noordeinde, is surrounded by boutiques and galleries. The charming atmosphere that surrounds the palace is enough to make you forget that any work is being done. Nationaal Automobielmuseum In het Louwman Museum staat 's-werelds oudste privécollectie automobielen. De verzameling omvat ruim tweehonderddertig antieke en klassieke automobielen. Kenners beschouwen de collectie als één van de mooiste ter wereld. Hoogtepunten zijn diverse oude Spykers en de Aston Martin DB5 van James Bond. Tevens is de op één na oudste auto ter wereld aanwezig: een De Dion Bouton & Trépardoux uit 1887. Het gebouw is ontworpen door de Amerikaanse architect Michael Graves.

National Automobile Museum The Louwman Museum is home to the world’s oldest private collection of motor cars. Connoisseurs consider it to be one of the finest in the world. The collection comprises over 230 antique and classic motorcars. Highlights include va

rious old Spykers and the DB5 Aston Martin belonging to James Bond. The museum also has the second oldest car in the world on show: a Dion Bouton & Trépardoux made in 1887. The museum building was designed by the American architect Michael Graves.

Een vogelvlucht door de geschiedenis De geschiedenis van Den Haag gaat terug tot het moment in de 13e eeuw waarop graaf Floris IV van Holland op zoek was naar een stuk grond om een jachthuis te bouwen. Deze bescheiden woning werd naast de huidige Hofvijver gebouwd, een gebied dat bekend stond als ‘Die Haghe’. In 1248 besloot graaf Willem II het jachthuis uit te breiden tot een kasteel en liet -onder andere- de voorloper van de huidige Ridderzaal bouwen. Vanaf dat moment werd het kasteel, nu bekend als het Binnenhof, langzaam het centrum van de Nederlandse politiek. Mede als gevolg van deze politieke status groeide de bevolking en ontstond er een dorp. In 1574 gebruikten de Spanjaarden Den Haag zelfs als uitvalsbasis. Een jaar later gingen er in Delft stemmen op om het verwaarloosde gebied van Den Haag aan de grond gelijk te maken. Prins Willem van Oranje wist dit te voorkomen en deed het tij voor Den Haag keren. De stad werd weer vergaderplaats voor de regering. Het aantal inwoners steeg en de stad werd uitgebreid met een haven en de paleizen aan het Voorhout. Tijdens de regeringsperiode van Napoleon verloor Den Haag opnieuw haar centrale politieke positie. Na de oprichting van het Koninkrijk der Nederland in 1813, met Koning Willem I aan het

hoofd, herstelde Den Haag in zijn oude glorie en onderging een ongekende bloei; de bevolking groeide, er werden wijken gebouwd, de eerste paardentramlijn werd in gebruik genomen en de welvaart steeg snel. Met de bouw van de Passage en Kurhaus kreeg de stad meer en meer allure. Den Haag kreeg internationaal steeds meer aanzien, mede dankzij de Amerikaanse miljonair Andrew Carnegie, die geld ter beschikking stelde voor de bouw van het Vredespaleis. Hiermee werd in 1913 de eerste stap genomen naar internationale hoofdstad van vrede en recht. Na de tweede wereldoorlog volgde een periode van wederopbouw, welvaart en immigratie en vormde Den Haag zich tot de stad die we nu kennen.

A brief history The history of The Hague dates back to the 13th century, when Count Floris IV of Holland purchased a plot of land to build a hunting lodge. The modest home was built beside what is now the Hofvijver (Court Lake), an area that was known as ‘Die Haghe’. In 1248, Count Willem II decided to extend the hunting lodge and build a castle and had the predecessor of the current Knights' Hall built. From that moment on, the castle - now known as the Binnenhof (Inner Court) - gradually became the centre of Dutch poli-

tical life. As a result of its political status, the population grew and a village was established. In 1574 the Spanish used The Hague as their base of operations. A year later, the States of Holland even considered demolishing the city. The proposal was abandoned after mediation by Prince William of Orange. The city also became the seat of the government of the Dutch Republic. The number of inhabitants rose and the city grew to incorporate a harbour and the palaces at Voorhout. During the reign of Napoleon, The Hague again lost its seat as a centre of national politics. After the establishment of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in 1813, ruled by King Willem I, The Hague was restored to its former glory and flourished; the population grew, new districts were built, the first horse-drawn tram line was introduced and prosperity quickly increased. The city had greater allure after the construction of the Passage and Kurhaus. The Hague received growing international acclaim, partly thanks to American millionaire Andrew Carnegie who financed most of the construction of the Peace Palace. Completed in 1913, it marked the first step towards the international city of peace and justice. After the Second World War a period of reconstruction, prosperity and immigration followed and The Hague was formed into the city that we now know.

Zelfportretten behoren tot de aantrekkelijkste en spannendste portretten die er zijn. Veel Nederlandse schilders uit de zeventiende eeuw hebben zelfportretten gemaakt, meer dan in enig ander land. De tentoonstelling toont zo'n dertig schilderijen waarbij de nadruk ligt op zelfportretten met beroeps-gereedschap.

Many seventeenth-century Dutch painters portrayed themselves, more than anywhere else in the world. These paintings have much to tell us about the artist’s selfimage and presentation. This exhibition will offer a focused overview of the genre, with an emphasis on self-portraits that show the tools of the trade.

Galerij Prins Willem V / Prince William V Gallery Galerij Prins Willem V is een verborgen juweel in het historische centrum van Den Haag. Stadhouder Prins Willem V van OranjeNassau liet de zaal in 1774 bouwen om er zijn schilderijen tentoon te stellen. Volgens toenmalig gebruik zijn de wanden van de lange zaal volgehangen met schilderijen, lijst aan lijst en van plafond tot vloer. Er zijn schilderijen te zien van onder anderen Jan Steen, Wouwerman, Bloemaert, Willem van de Velde, Gerard ter Borch. Prince William V Gallery was the first public museum in the Netherlands. In 1774, Dutch stadtholder Willem V, Prince of Orange-Nassau, brought together the key pieces of his painting collection in this building at Buitenhof. As was customary in those days, the walls of the long hall are filled with paintings, frame to frame and from floor to ceiling. Met de mode-ontwerpers Viktor & Rolf en Jan Taminiau heeft Nederland een serieuze plaats in de internationale modewereld veroverd. Voor het Gemeentemuseum Den Haag, dat een van de belangrijkste museale modecollecties ter wereld bezit, reden om een expositie in te richten van meer dan honderd creaties uit de Nederlandse modegeschiedenis. Koninklijk Den Haag Den Haag is al eeuwenlang het middelpunt van de vaderlandse geschiedenis. De band van de stad met het koningshuis dateert van 1248 toen graaf Willem II zich er vestigde. Dat zijn paleis Noordeinde, het werkpaleis van koning Willem-Alexander en paleis Huis ten Bosch, waar prinses Beatrix woonde en de koning over niet al te lange tijd z'n intrek zal nemen. Na een rondje paleizen is pauzeren in de vrij toegankelijke Paleistuin een bijzondere ervaring. Hier bevindt zich de officiĂŤle ingang van paleis Noordeinde, waar een op dat moment passerende koning ontmoeten niet ondenkbaar is.

Royal The Hague For centuries, The Hague has been the centrepoint of the history of the fatherland. The bonds between the city and the royal family date back to 1248 when count William II settled there. The Hague still has several working palaces. They include Noordeinde palace, the working palace of King WilliamAlexander and Huis ten Bosch palace, where Princess Beatrix lived and the king will reside later on. After a tour of the palaces, a brief pause in the freely accessible Palace Gardens is a unique experience. The official entrance to Noordeinde Palace is located here and it is not entirely inconceivable that the king may be arriving or departing at that time.

Dit landschapskunstwerk van James Turrell is bedoeld als plek om vanaf een duintop naar de hemel te kijken.

In many respects Kijkduin Beach Resort is smaller than Scheveningen, but by no means less fun. De Betovering Internationaal kunstfestival voor de jeugd in Den Haag. De leukste herfstvakantie van Nederland! Het zand op het Haagse strand spat 28 en 29 november alle kanten op tijdens de Red Bull Knock Out 2015. Een deelnemersveld van bijna 1.500 motorrijders gaat tijdens dit meerdaagse evenement van start vanaf het noordelijk havenhoofd, rijdt tot even net voorbij de Pier en keert dan terug over de obstakels. The sand on the beach will be spraying in all directions on 28 and 29 November during the Red Bull Knock Out 2015. During this event, a participant field of nearly 1,500 motocross riders will kick off from the northern pier, ride just past the pier and make the return journey over the obstacles. The Hague Pro Freestyle Wakeboarders op de Hofvijver, langs het torentje van de ministerpresident, met duizenden bezoekers langs de kant. Op het Spuiplein een bizar action sports park met torens, schansen en tribunes.

The Hague Pro Freestyle is het meest spectaculaire action sportfestival van West-Europa. Zes sporten in acht disciplines: wakeboard, snow-board, BMX, MTB, skateboard en ski. Den Haag is met recht de 'action sport capital' van West-Europa.

Wakeboarders on the Hofvijver beside the Prime Minister's Little Tower, with thousands of visitors beside the water. Spuiplein plays host to a bizarre action sports park with towers, jumps and tribunes. The Hague Pro Freestyle is the backdrop for the most spectacular action sports festival in West Europe. Rennen voor vrede / Running for peace In de stad van Vrede en Recht mag een hardloopevenement met hetzelfde thema natuurlijk niet ontbreken. In het Vredesweekend met centraal in het parcours trekpleister het Vredespaleis, vindt op zaterdag 19 september de Vredesloop Den Haag plaats. Toon je van je sportiefste kant en loop mee voor de vrede. En omdat je dan praktisch al in het centrum van Den Haag bent, kun je na afloop even lekker bijkomen en nagenieten op een van de terrassen op de Grote Markt of het Plein.

Herfstvakantie in Den Haag betekent De Betovering! Dit festival voor de jeugd laat Den Haag zinderen met een programma vol toneel, dans, muziek, beeldende kunst, films, workshops en nog veel meer. Eén groot feest voor kinderen van 2 tot en met 12 jaar.

Het Haags UIT Festival vormt de start van het Haagse culturele seizoen. Het Lange Voorhout is dan de culturele hotspots met podia vol klinkende namen en een veelheid aan verrassend straattheater. Theaters en andere culturele instellingen openen hun deuren voor rondleidingen en een gratis voorproefje van de voorstellingen en concerten.

Haagse hofjes / Hague Courtyards Nu bijna vergeten oases in de binnenstad, maar een kwart van de Haagse bevolking woonde 150 jaar geleden nog in een hofje. Met meer dan 100 hofjes is Den Haag met recht een 'hofstad'. De bekendste en mooiste hofjes zijn onder andere het Hof van Nieuwkoop en het Rusthof. Tramrestaurant Hoftrammm is het eerste en enige rijdende tramrestaurant in Nederland. Sinds april 2014 rijdt deze voormalige Haagse tram, welke volledig is verbouwd tot restaurant, door de straten van Den Haag en Scheveningen. Gedurende de 2¼ uur durende rit, wordt een heerlijk 4 gangen diner geserveerd. Dit menu, dat elke 8 weken wisseld, wordt bedacht door Executive Chef Pierre Wind, ook bekend van tv! Hoftrammm tram restaurant The Hoftrammm, Holland’s first riding tram restaurant, is officially on the rails in The Hague as from 24 April 2014. This tram, thats is conferted into a fully equiped restaurant, rides through the Court City, while you can enjoy a delicious, four-course dinner cooked by former TV chef Pierre Wind. Hoftrammm runs at specific times, between the standard HTM public transport timetable, and a tour takes a minimum of 2 hours and 15 minutes. Amsterdam Airport Schiphol en Rotterdam The Hague Airport liggen op korte afstand van Den Haag en zijn per openbaar vervoer uitstekend bereikbaar. Vanaf Rotterdam-The Hague Airport reis je per Airport Shuttle tot halte Meijersplein en verder met de RandstadRail naar Den Haag Centraal Station. Bij de AKO-shop op Rotterdam The Hague Airport kunt u een OV-chipkaart aanschaffen. Amsterdam Schiphol Airport heeft een goede verbinding per trein met Den Haag Centraal en Den Haag Hollands Spoor. De reis duurt 30 minuten.

Amsterdam Airport Schiphol and Rotterdam-The Hague Airport are situated a short distance from The Hague and can be reached very conveniently by public transport. From Rotterdam The Hague Airport you can travel by Airport Shuttle to Meijersplein and further by RandstadRail to The Hague Central Station. An OV chip card can be purchased at the AKO shop at Rotterdam The Hague Airport. Amsterdam Schiphol Airport has an excellent connection by train with The Hague Central and The Hague Hollands Spoor. The journey takes 30 minutes.

Neem voor P+R Hoornwijck op de A4 afrit 9 (richting Ypenbug/Rijswijk Centrum) of op de A13 afrit 7 (richting Rijswijk/Den Haag Zuid). Vanaf hier rijdt tram 15 iedere 10 tot 15 minuten naar het centrum van Den Haag. Voor Scheveningen kun je overstappen bij Den Haag Centraal Station op tram 9. Je kunt in de automaat naast je parkeerkaart ook een HTM-dagkaart aanschaffen. Deze is dan geldig als vervoerbewijs voor 4 personen om de hele dag te reizen met HTM en HTMbuzz voor € 2,- of € 4,-. Openbaar vervoer in Den Haag en omgeving

Den Haag beschikt over een uitstekend openbaar vervoer. Een groot aantal bus- en tram-lijnen (zie pag. 96-97) brengt je naar je bestemming in Den Haag en de randgemeenten Voorburg, Rijswijk, Wateringen, Nootdorp, Delft, Leidschendam en Zoetermeer. OV-chipkaart Om te kunnen reizen met een OVchipkaart moet je voldoende geld (saldo) op je OV-chipkaart zetten. Daarna check je in en uit bij de kaartlezers in tram of bus. Bij de HTM Servicepunten op Den Haag Centraal Station en Station Hollands Spoor kun je geld op je OVchipkaart zetten, OV-chipkaarten en reisproducten kopen. Geen OVchipkaart? OV chip card The OV chip card, a pre-paid swipe card system, can be purchased from The Hague Central Station, Hollands Spoor Station and the Tourist Information Office. The OV chip card is not restricted to a particular area, but can be used throughout the Netherlands on all trains, bus and tram lines. At the start of your journey, you hold your card up to the screen and at the end, you check out by holding your card up to the gate screen. Don't have an OV chip card? Then buy the HTM day pass for 1 day of unlimited travel with HTM. 3 Day The Hague Travelcard This is a disposable ov-chipkaart. This card is valid from your first check-in until the end of the third
