Het is zomer, de zon schijnt en veroorzaakt een kriebel je buik. Samen slenteren over de zonnige boulevard, shoppen op het koninklijke Noordeinde of de beeldententoonstelling op het statige Lange Voorhout bekijken.

It is Summer, the sun is shining and it's getting you all excited and restless. Stroll down the sunny Boulevard together, go shopping in the majestic Noordeinde or take a look at the sculpture exhibition on the grand Lange Voorhout.

Met het hele gezin zandkastelen bouwen en daarna pannenkoeken eten in de historische binnenstad. Waarom niet 's avonds richting de haven om te proeven wat de vissers overdag in hun netten hebben gevangen? Of na een strandwandeling terug naar het centrum voor een Indische rijsttafel? Een dagje Den Haag kent vele mogelijkheden en de afstand van strandplezier naar het rijke culturele stadsleven blijkt slechts tien minuten!

Have a family outing building sandcastles and then a pancake lunch in the historic city centre. Why not head off to the harbour in the evening to taste what the fishermen caught that day? Or after a walk on the beach, go back into the centre for an Indonesian rice table? There is lots to do on a day out in The Hague and the fun on the beach is just ten minutes away from the rich culture of the city centre!

Van de paleizen in Den Haag zijn er nog enkele echt functioneel. Dat zijn paleis Noordeinde, het werkpaleis van Koningin Beatrix en paleis Huis ten Bosch, waar de koningin woont. In paleis Lange Voorhout, nu in gebruik als museum, woonde tot 1891 koningin Emma.

A few of the palaces in The Hague are still in use today. These include the Noordeinde Palace, the working palace of H.M. Queen Beatrix and the Huis ten Bosch Palace, where the Queen lives. Although now in use as a museum, Queen Emma lived in the Lange Voorhout Palace.

Escher in Het Paleis

Escher in The Palace

M.C. Escher (1898-1972) was een meester in het tekenen van onmogelijke situaties. Hij laat in zijn werk water omhoog stromen, vogels in vissen veranderen en mannen eindeloos dezelfde trap open aflopen. Sinds enkele jaren is de collectie te zien in Escher in Het Paleis.

M.C. Escher (1898-1972) was a master at drawing impossible situations. He allows water to flow upwards, birds change into fish and men endlessly walk up and down-stairs in the same courtyard. For many years, his collection could be viewed in Escher in The Palace.

Classical music in a historic city Everything from intimate chamber music to the grandest concert sounds can be heard in the streets of The Hague's city centre during the Festival Classique. HUMANITY HOUSE

In het Humanity House ben je ineens zelf de vluchteling en speel je de hoofdrol in je eigen zoektocht als slachtoffer. Naast de reis als vluchteling, geeft het museum ook informatie over het werk van het Rode Kruis en verschillende andere humanitaire organisaties HUMANITY HOUSE

60 years of African sculpture Man-sized African sculptures will be occupying the stately Lange Voorhout this Summer. During the summer exhibition, 'The Rainbow Nation: Modern day sculpture from South Africa' you can walk around the exhibits and see how South African sculpture has developed in the last sixty years. From the dark days of Apartheid to the current period of transformation. The artists include Edoardo Villa, Sidney Kumalo, Noria Mabasa. Wim Botha and Claudette Schreuders. On Wednesday, 18th July, Nelson Mandela Day will be celebrated worldwide. In The Hague, Arie Schippers' Nelson Mandela monument will be unveiled.

In the Humanity House you are the asylum seeker and you play the lead role in your own search for help as a victim. As well as the journey as a refugee, the museum also has information about the work that the Red Cross and other humanitarian organisations do.

Zestig jaar Afrikaanse beeldhouwkunst Mansgrote Afrikaanse beelden bevolken deze zomer het statige Lange Voorhout. Tijdens de zomertentoonstelling 'The Rainbow Nation: Hedendaagse beeldhouwkunst uit Zuid-Afrika' loop je langs de ontwikkeling van de Zuid-Afrikaanse beeldhouwkunst in de afgelopen zestig jaar. Van de donkere dagen van de Apartheid tot de huidige periode van transformatie. Tot de kunstenaars behoren o.a. Edoardo Villa, Sidney Kumalo, Noria Mabasa. Wim Botha en Claudette Schreuders. Woensdag 18 juli is het wereldwijd Nelson Mandela Dag. In Den Haag wordt dan het Nelson Mandela-monument van Arie Schippers onthuld.

The Mauritshuis is undergoing an expansion and restoration plan. Wave to the Queen on Prinsjesdag The Royal Family has a special place in the hearts of many Dutch people. This is strongly evidenced during 'Prinsjesdag', the annual opening of the parliamentary year. The Royal entourage travels by coach, with lots of pomp and ceremony, from the Noordeinde Palace to the Knights' Hall where Queen Beatrix gives her annual Queen's Speech. Instead of fighting for a spot along the route, a better option is taking a seat on the tribune along the stately Toernooiveld. Or, the weekend before Prinsjesdag, come and see how the participating horses and their riders prepare for the parade. You will see them walking along the route. The Monday before Prinsjesdag, the horses practice on the beach at Scheveningen. Tickets for the tribune can be purchased at the Tourist Information Office or by telephone on +31 (0)70 361 88 60.

CITY WALKS

During one of the city walks on Wednesdays and Saturdays you walk past the Binnenhof and the Knights' Hall, the Parliament Buildings and the Prime Minister's little office tower. The guide of 'Residentie Ontdekkingen' will tell you all you need to know about the past and present of The Hague's city centre.

Zwaaien naar de koningin op Prinsjesdag Het Koningshuis heeft bij veel Nederlanders een speciaal plekje in hun hart. En dat blijkt eens te meer tijdens Prinsjesdag, de start van het nieuwe parlementaire jaar. Dan begeeft het koninklijk gezelschap zich in een stoet vol pracht en praal van Paleis Noordeinde naar de Ridderzaal, waar koningin Beatrix haar jaarlijkse Troonrede voorleest. In plaats van een plekje te bemachtigen langs de route, is de tribune langs het statige Toernooiveld een optie. Of kom het weekend voor Prinsjedag kijken hoe paarden en ruiters van de bereden brigade oefenen voor de optocht. Dan wordt de route gereden. Recht voor het Kurhaus oefenen de paarden de maandag voor Prinsjesdag op het Scheveningse strand. Kaarten voor de speciale tribune zijn de koop aan de balie van de VVV of telefonisch op (070) 361 88 60.

Tijdens ĂŠĂŠn van de stadswandelingen op woensdag en zaterdag loopt u onder andere langs het Binnenhof en de Ridderzaal, de Tweede Kamer en het torentje van de minister-president. De gids van Residentie Ontdekkingen vertelt u alles over het heden en verleden van het centrum van Den Haag.

Den Haag kent vele gezichten, die in de vaste collectie van het Haags Historisch Museum allemaal aan bod komen. Tot 23 september toont het museum werk van Isaac IsraĂŤls, een van de voornaamste Nederlandse schilders van de Amsterdamse Impressionisten. TYPICALLY HAGUE

WERELDHOOFDSTAD VAN VREDE EN RECHT

In Den Haag vind je bijna alle organisaties op het gebied van de vrede en rechtspraak. Al deze instellingen, waaronder het Vredespaleis, het Joegoslavië Tribunaal en het Internationaal Strafhof, maken Den Haag - na New York, Wenen en Genève - tot de vierde VN-stad. Den Haag, viert ieder jaar op 21 september uitgebreid de Internationale VN Dag van de Vrede.

Honouring our veterans Take in the spectacular sight of 200 cool motorbikes arriving in the city or take a seat in one of the historical military vehicles during this eight edition of the Dutch Veteran's Day. The official parade of 3,000 veterans and soldiers, 17 military bands, modern defence material and historical vehicles starts and ends on the Malieveld and will be inspected by HRH the Prince of Orange at 13.00 on the Kneuterdijk. Koninklijke pracht en praal Een bijzonder en nog niet zo'n bekend ceremonieel! Meerdere keren per jaar, altijd op woensdagochtend, arriveren nieuw benoemde ambassadeurs op paleis Noordeinde om aan H.M. Koningin Beatrix hun Geloofsbrieven te overhandigen, waarin zij vragen om het vertrouwen als zijnde de vertegenwoordiger van het staatshoofd van hun land. Het aanbieden van de Geloofsbrieven gaat gepaard met veel ceremonieel. De nieuwe ambassadeur wordt door een staatsierijtuig, voorzien van een tweespan paarden en in gala geklede koetsiers en lakeien, opgehaald. Aangekomen bij het paleis wordt het gezelschap verwelkomd door de ceremoniemeester en een militaire kapel. Na een eresaluut van vier roffels wordt het volkslied gespeeld, waarna de ambassadeur de erewacht inspecteert en het paleis binnentreedt. Royal pomp and ceremony An unusual and little-known ceremony. Several times a year, on Wednesday mornings, newly appointed Ambassadors make their way to the Noordeinde Palace to deliver their Letters of Credence to Her Royal Highness Queen Beatrix, asking her to put her trust in them as the representatives of their country's Head of State. And of course this is done with a lot of pomp and ceremony: the new Ambassador is picked up from his Embassy and taken to the palace in a Royal carriage and pair, with coachmen and footmen in full regalia. Upon arrival at the palace, they are welcomed by the Master of Ceremonies and a military band. After a salute of honour and a drum roll, the National Anthem is played. Isaac Israëls in The Hague Get to see The Hague and Scheveningen as they were at the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century through the eyes of one of the Netherland's greatest 20th century impressionists, Isaac Israëls (1865-1934), now on show in five museums in The Hague. At the turn of the 20th century, The Hague was a blossoming city. There was a lot of industry, the people who had moved to Indonesia spent their holidays here so Scheveningen was developing into a cosmopolitan beach resort. Israëls portrayed life in The Hague at that time in a spontaneous and light way. You can also take the Isaac Israëls walking and cycle route.

De Oude Kerk (1246) wordt gekarakteriseerd door de scheve toren. Het godshuis heeft een prachtig interieur; vooral de bewerkte preekstoel uit 1548 en 27 gebrandschilderde ramen zijn bezienswaardig. Den Haag toen en nu De geschiedenis van Den Haag gaat terug tot de 13e eeuw, toen graaf Floris IV van Holland op zoek was naar grond om een jachthuis te bouwen. Deze bescheiden woning werd naast de huidige Hofvijver gebouwd, een gebied dat bekend stond als 'Die Haghe'. In 1248 besloot graaf Willem II het jachthuis uit te breiden tot een kasteel en liet -onder andere- de voorloper van de huidige Ridderzaal bouwen. Vanaf dat moment werd het kasteel, nu bekend als het Binnenhof, langzaam het centrum van de Nederlandse politiek. Mede als gevolg van deze politieke status groeide de bevolking en ontstond er een dorp. De stadsrechten en de verdedigingsmuren die bij deze status hoorden, bleven echter uit. In 1433 kwam het gebied van de familie Holland in handen van de Bourgondiërs en werd Den Haag een verblijfplaats voor stadhouders en vertegenwoordigers van de landheer. Hoewel het dorp het regionale bestuurscentrum van Nederland bleef, mislukten de pogingen om het rijk te centraliseren. In 1574 gebruikten de Spanjaarden Den Haag als uitvalsbasis. Een jaar later gingen er in Delft stemmen op om het verwaarloosde gebied van Den Haag met de grond gelijk te maken. Prins Willem van Oranje wist dit te voorkomen en deed het tij keren. De stad werd weer vergaderplaats voor de regering. Het aantal inwoners steeg en de stad werd uitgebreid met een haven en de paleizen aan het Voorhout. 74

Tijdens de regeringsperiode van Napoleon verloor Den Haag opnieuw haar centrale politieke positie. Na de oprichting van het Koninkrijk der Nederland in 1813, met Koning Willem I aan het hoofd, herstelde Den Haag en kende het een ongekende bloei. Het aantal inwoners groeide, er werden nieuwe wijken gebouwd en de welvaart steeg snel. Met de bouw van de Passage en het Kurhaus kreeg de stad meer en meer allure. Den Haag kreeg steeds meer aanzien, mede dankzij de Amerikaanse miljonair Andrew Carnegie, die geld ter beschikking stelde voor de bouw van het Vredespaleis. Hiermee werd in 1913 de eerste stap genomen naar internationale hoofdstad van vrede en recht. Voordat Indonesië in 1945 onafhankelijk werd, was het een kolonie van Nederland. De Hollanders die in Indonesië werkten, keerden regelmatig naar huis terug en verbleven dan in Den Haag, waar het Ministerie van Koloniën zich bevond. Hotel des Indes bood de reizigers uit Indonesië onderdak. In de tussen 1850 en 1900 gebouwde Archipelbuurt vestigden de voormalige kolonisten zich in de straten vernoemd naar de eilanden van Indonesië. De bijnaam 'Weduwe van Indië' ontstond in die tijd. Na WO II volgde een periode van wederopbouw, welvaart en immigratie. Tussen 1996 en 2011 groeide het aantal inwoners gestaag tot 500.000 in november 2011.

The Hague past and present The Hague's history dates back to the time in the 13th century when Count Floris IV of Holland was looking for a piece of land on which to build his hunting lodge. This property was built next to what is these days the Hofvijver, an area that was then known as 'Die Haghe'. In 1248 Count Willem II decided to extend the hunting lodge and make a castle out of it, so he arranged for what is now the Knights' Hall to be built, amongst other things. Thereafter, the castle, now known as the Binnenhof, became the centre for Dutch politics. Partly due to this political status, the population grew and a village was formed. What it still lacked, that a place of this status usually had, were city laws and the city walls. In 1433 the Holland family's land was taken over by the Burgundians and The Hague became the residence of state governors and representatives of the landed gentry. Although the village remained the regional civic centre for The Netherlands, any attempts to centralise the nation failed. In 1574 the Spaniards used The Hague as their operating base. A year later, in Delft, they voted to knock down the whole neglected area of The Hague. Prince William of Orange wanted to avoid that happening and turned the tides for The Hague. The city again became the meeting place for the government. The number of inhabitants grew and the city spread, gaining a harbour and the palaces on the Voorhout. 75 WELKOM IN DEN HAAG

The Hague again lost its central political position during Napoleon's reign. After the Kingdom of The Netherlands was established in 1813, with King Willem I ruling, The Hague regained its old glory and simply blossomed; the population grew, new neighbourhoods were built, the first horse pulled tram line was started up and prosperity quickly increased. The city acquired more and more allure through the building of places like the Passage and the Kurhaus. The Hague also gained more international attention, partially thanks to the American millionaire, Andrew Carnegie, who provided funding for the building of the Peace Palace. Through this, the first step towards the International City of Peace and Justice was made. Indonesia was one of the Netherland's colonies before it gained independence in 1945. The Dutch working in Indonesia regularly returned home for the holidays and usually stayed in The Hague where the Colonial Office was. These travellers from Indonesia used to stay at the Hotel Des Indes on the Lange Voorhout. The former colonists started to settle in the properties built between 1850 and 1900 in the Archipel area, in the streets named after the Indonesian islands. At the time it had the nickname 'Widow of Indonesia. After WW II came a period of rebuilding, prosperity and immigration. Between 1996 and 2011 the number of the city's inhabitants grew steadily to the 500,000 recorded in November 2011.

Souterrain

WEGWIJS Vliegvelden De luchthavens Amsterdam Airport Schiphol (schiphol.nl) en Rotterdam-The Hague Airport (rotterdamthehagueairport.nl) liggen op korte afstand van Den Haag en zijn per auto en openbaar vervoer uitstekend bereikbaar. Nieuw is een shuttle van Rotterdam-The Hague Airport naar Den Haag.

Treinen 88

Den Haag beschikt over twee internationale treinstations. Vanaf Station Hollands Spoor vertrekken alle treinen in de richting van Amsterdam, Rotterdam, België en Frankrijk en vanaf Den Haag Centraal Station vertrekken de treinen richting Utrecht en Duitsland. Beide stations hebben een directe verbinding met Amsterdam Airport Schiphol (duur: 30 minuten).

OV chipkaart De OV chipkaart kan worden gekocht op Station Hollands Spoor, Den Haag Centraal Station, bij HTM Klantenservice in de Wagenstraat en bij het VVV Uitburo. HTM Consumentenlijn: 0900 486 46 36 (€ 0,10 p/m) op werkdagen van 7-19 uur. Bij het instappen checkt u in door de OV chipkaart voor de kaartlezer bij de deur in het voertuig te houden en bij het uitstappen checkt u op dezelfde wijze weer uit. De HTM werkt aan een chipkaartproduct voor bezoekers en congresgangers. Kijk op www.htm.net voor nadere informatie.

NachtNet Op donderdag-, vrijdag- en zaterdagnacht rijdt de HTM met zes NachtNet-lijnen. Vanaf het Buitenhof vertrekken zes buslijnen door Den Haag en naar Zoetermeer en Westland. Kaarten zijn alleen verkrijgbaar in de bus.

Taxi's

15 (Binnenstad Express) iedere 10 tot 15 minuten naar het centrum van Den Haag (duur 13 minuten) en brengt tram 5 (Strand Expres) u van half april tot en met half september naar Scheveningen (alleen zo - duur 30 minuten). P+R Hoornwijck is 24 uur per dag geopend. Parkeren, inlcusief een dagkaart voor het openbaar vervoer voor 4 personen, kost van ma-vr tussen 7 en 17 uur € 4,- per keer, van ma-vr tussen 17 en 7 uur € 2,- per keer en in het weekend € 2,- per keer.

Fietsen Voor de veiligheid zijn op veel plaatsen fietspaden aangelegd. In Den Haag, Scheveningen en Kijkduin vindt u op diverse locaties ook bewaakte fietsenstallingen. Fietsen zijn o.a. te huur bij de fietsenstallingen bij Den Haag Centraal Station en Station Hollands Spoor.

Diefstal

Natuurlijk kunt u een taxi op straat aanhouden, maar bij de treinstations en op tal van andere locaties in de stad vindt u ook speciale taxi-standplaatsen. De tarieven van taxi's worden als volgt berekend: de taxi begint met een vast startbedrag en vervolgens wordt per kilometer een vast tarief gerekend. Er gelden in Den Haag geen nachttarieven.

Parkeren

Openbaar vervoer

P+R Hoornwijck

Den Haag beschikt over een goed uitgerust openbaar vervoer. Ruim 30 bus- en tramlijnen brengen u naar uw bestemming in Den Haag, Scheveningen en Kijkduin. Maar ook de randgemeenten Voorburg, Rijswijk, Wassenaar, Wateringen, Leidschendam, Nootdorp en Delft zijn met het openbaar vervoer goed bereikbaar. Met de komst van RandstadRail zijn er ook prima verbindingen naar Zoetermeer en Rotterdam

P+R Hoornwijck (Laan van Hoornwijck 55, 2289 DG Rijswijk) betekent goedkoop parkeren en goedkoop met het openbaar vervoer naar het centrum van Den Haag en (alleen op zondag) naar het strand van Scheveningen.

Op veel plaatsen in Den Haag, in Scheveningen en de binnenstad, moet u betalen voor het parkeren van uw auto. U parkeert meestal goedkoper in één van de parkeergarages. Zowel in Scheveningen als in het centrum van Den Haag worden de parkeergarages aangegeven door een parkeerverwijssysteem. Meer informatie: www.denhaag.nl/parkeren.

Overal ter wereld, dus ook in Den Haag, zijn mensen uit op andermans spullen. Let daarom, waar u ook bent, goed op uw bezittingen. Laat geen spullen zichtbaar in uw auto liggen. GETTING AROUND Airports The international airports Amsterdam Airport Schiphol (schiphol.nl) and Rotterdam-The Hague Airport (rotterdamthehagueairport.nl) are in short distances from The Hague and are easily accessible by car and public transport.

Trains The Hague has two international and well-equipped train stations. Trains from Hollands Spoor Station leave for Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Belgium and France. Trains for Utrecht and Germany leave from The Hague Central Station. Both train stations operate a direct service to Amsterdam Airport Schiphol (duration: 30 minutes).

Taxi's

It's possible to hail a taxi in the street but you will also find special taxi ranks at the train stations and throughout the city. Alternatively, order a taxi by telephone. Fares are calculated on a basic rate, plus a fixed rate for each kilometre travelled. No special night rates apply in The Hague.

Public transport The Hague boasts an excellent public transport. Over 30 bus and tram lines will quickly and safely take you to your destinations in The Hague, Scheveningen and Kijkduin, as well as to the adjoining municipalities of Voorburg, Rijswijk, Wassenaar, Wateringen, Leidschendam and Delft. RandstadRail offers excellent light rail connections to Zoetermeer and Rotterdam.

OV chip card The OV chip card, a pre-paid swipe card system can be purchased from the Hollands Spoor Station, The Hague Central Station, from the HTM Customer Service at Wagenstraat 35 and from the Tourist Information Office. The OV chip card is not restricted to a particular area, but can be used throughout The Netherlands on all trains, bus, tram and metro lines. At the start of your journey, you check in at the gate by holding your OV chip card up to the screen. At the end of your journey, you check out by holding your card up to the gate screen. Night buses On Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights, 7 different night buses operate from Buitenhof to town, Zoetermeer and Westland. You can purchase a ticket only from the driver.

Parking Paid parking restrictions apply to many areas in The Hague, including the city centre and Scheveningen. For convenient and unrestricted parking, visit one of the parking garages. Parking garages are signposted. For more information: www.denhaag.nl/parkeren

P+R Hoornwijck P+R Hoornwijck (Laan van Hoornwijck 55, 2289 DG Rijswijk) means cheap parking and public transport to the centre of The Hague and (only on Sundays) to the beach at Scheveningen. To get to P+R Hoornwijck take exit 9 from the A4 (in the direction of Ypenbug/Rijswijk Centrum) and exit 7 from the A13 (in the direction of Rijswijk/Den Haag Zuid). Tram 15 (Binnenstad Express) goes from the P+R Hoornwijck into the centre of The Hague every 10 to 15 minutes (13 minutes journey time) and tram 5 (Strand Express) takes you into Scheveningen from mid April to mid September (only on Sundays – 30 minutes journey time). P+R Hoornwijck is open 24 hours a day. Parking, including a day ticket for public transport for 4 people, costs € 4.00 per day (or part thereof) from Mon – Fri between 07.00 and 17.00, € 2.00 from Mon – Fri between 17.00 and 07.00 and € 2.00 at weekends.

In addition, help is available by telephone to visitors to other parts of the Netherlands. TAS can also offer assistance in trying to locate missing persons or personal belongings. The only condition for our assistance is that the incident be reported to the police. Open: The team of specially trained volunteers is ready to support you seven days a week. The beach and the sea are always alluring. And not only for a long stroll along the beach or during a cycle ride through the dunes. The beach is also perfect for lots of beach sports, from kite flying to surfing. Or for building sandcastles. But also, after you have done all of that and have licked the salty taste from your lips, then it is time for a bit of pampering. The Pier at Scheveningen is a well-known fixture and entrance is free of charge. You get a fabulous view of the sea at the end, where you can watch the fishing boats entering the harbour.

Boulevardtrein Maak vanaf april tot oktober ieder weekend en in de vakanties dagelijks een rondrit door Scheveningen met de Boulevardtrein. De rondritten van een half uurtje vertekken ongeveer elk uur vóór de Pier en laten u in een half uur het mooiste van de badplaats zien. Onderweg worden er leuke feiten verteld over het Scheveningen van vroeger en nu! From April to October the Boulevard train rides, every weekend and during holidays daily, tours in Scheveningen.
