erry Christmas
Yes, it’s almost the end of the year, but the beginning of a new month. So don’t ignore any last minute goals you want to achieve this side of the year; it’s still very possible. All you need is a strategy and if you’re focused, you’ll get one. Unfortunately due to a bereavement in my family, the November issue of EW Newsletter did not go out as scheduled. However, I am happy to be back on track and looking forward to updating you with all exciting news about Empowered Woman and The Mentoring Academy. As we look back at 2012, what would you say has been the main highlight (s) of the year for you? Reflection is a worthwhile time for you to remember moments that will leave a lasting impression in your life, moments that can change our thinking positively. As we get ready to celebrate a new year, I would like to challenge your thought process. If you were given the chance to change any mistakes or missed out opportunity you experienced in 2012 for 2013 what would that be and what procedures will you put in place to ensure you get the result you want? Some of you may already have your agenda set for 2013 and some are still preparing your plans and I encourage you that whatever plans you are preparing, prepare it with:
The Kingdom Mind Set In the past couple of months, I’ve been on this thought process of lining up everything I do on the Kingdom principles. As you read this, I want to first of all explain to you what a Kingdom mind set is all about. When John the Baptise was in prison, he sent two of his disciples to Jesus and said to Him if He was the Coming One, or should they look for another? Jesus answered and said to them: Continue Reading

OMEN STEPPING OUT! Dr Carol Tomlin Pastor, University Lecturer and Chaplain
My first meeting with Dr Carol Tomlin was at Birmingham New Street Station where she came to pick me up. I was invited by her to visit and discuss how I could be of support on her annual conference—Back to the Garden of Eden, a conference that deals with relationships and the impact negative love can have if one is not sanctified in Christ. On meeting her, we clicked immediately, her warm, honest personality made me feel welcomed and the relationship has grown ever since. Carol Tomlin is Co-Pastor of Restoration Fellowship Ministries in Birmingham; she is also a university lecturer and chaplain. I met up with her to find out a bit more about her various roles and how she is able to juggle them to meet the demands of those who are beneficiaries of her service and here is what she had to say. EW: As a pastor and educationist, how are you able to merge both roles to serve effectively? CT: As a pastor, educator/academic I am able to combine both roles due to my time management, organisation skill, setting realistic targets. I am highly motivated and passionate about my service to Jesus Christ and in my vocation as an educator. EW: What inspired you to become an educationist? CT: I was encouraged to be an educator by my peers who often stated that they could see me teaching adults. I was inspired to be an educator by an African American female professor from Howard University, (the leading Historically Black University in America); she was invited to give a lecture during my undergraduate studies and the moment I heard this professor, I decided that I would be a university lecturer. In terms of my ministry, I have been inspired by male and female ministers such as Rev Dr Joel Edwards, Andrew Womack, Pastor Penny Francis Rev Dr Jackie Mcculough Dr Cindy Trimm. EW: What challenges if any have you seen within the black community? CT: There are several challenges in the black community. However, it is important for one to define the ‘black community’ as it comprises both African and Caribbean cultures and both communities individually have related but separate issues due to their respective histories and experiences. Collectively, I see the major issue as being the lack of economic and political power to effectively change and impact the community. For the Caribbean community in particular, I believe that the outstanding challenge is male/female relationships and the family structure. For example, recent figures from the DfES (2006) suggest over 60% of black Caribbean young people belong to lone parent families. Interestingly, for black Africans it is estimated to be, 40% although it can be argued that many parents in this group appear to be separated because of immigration issues rather than the ‘baby father syndrome,’ which more typically reflects the Caribbean community. The other challenges include mental health and the high numbers of young undereducated men (mainly Caribbean). Continued on page 6

OMEN STEPPING OUT! CONTD. Dr Carol Tomlin Pastor, University Lecturer and Chaplain
EW: How can they be dealt with? CT: The challenges can be dealt with through building strong family units. The church can help families spiritually by first equipping couples with the necessary tools for developing godly and healthy relationships; this can be undertaken through facilitating various programmes and initiatives. EING SINGLE TO BE MARRIED BLOG CORNER
Your Husband’s Heart is in Good Hands In my 6 years of marriage, I've come to realise through experience that I cannot make my husband do anything he doesn't want to do. There have been times during heated conversations or even out right arguments that I think to myself, "if I make myself clear enough, with the word of God, surely he'll understand my point of view"? Not that I am trying to control his thought pattern, but if we're on the same page, then direction would not be a problem. So does that mean that my husband doesn't actually have a mind of his own, or do I not trust that he is capable of hearing from God. After such heated arguments, we end up spent, angry an frustrated because no one is listening or even hearing what the other is saying, I've come to realise that even though I am his wife, I have no control over him, his thoughts and his actions......at least not physically. My husband is a very practical person, he is a doer and when he takes action, majority of his efforts are rewarded. Continue Reading

HE PURPOSE IN EDUCATION BY DR CAROL TOMLIN
Education is extremely important for the progression, sustainability and success of the black community. The emerging market of China for example, is a developing economy because of its emphasis on education and discipline. In my view one can acquire some form of education but not be sufficiently disciplined therefore these two aspects are required for achievement. In addition, education helps to develop confidence, which is key to success. However, education in itself has to serve a purpose and individuals should be clear about the goal of education. There are some people, of all nationalities, who have gained many certificates but are not truly educated, as the acquisition of knowledge has not effectively impacted on their lives. Such individuals who do possess paper qualifications may not think critically about certain activities that they undertake and instead follow cultural norms, even if those norms are unproductive and even destructive. Unfortunately, they do not utilise their education in the total sphere of life. Clearly, many individuals in the black community that are excelling have some degree of education. In my view education should be about transformation by which we can change our lives for the better. If more people in the community become truly educated then the future generation will be more hopeful and less alienated from society. It is through the vehicle of education that we can be empowered in our relationships with our families, friends and ultimately influence the community, economically and politically. Indeed education can transform the black community!
