Hand Knotted Hand-knotted rugs embody prestige and excellence. The crème de la crème in terms of rugs, they are a striking illustration of the perfection that mankind is capable of reaching when passion, hard work and its incredible imagination meet. Hand-knotting is an ancient art of weaving rugs on vertical looms of a quality so amazing and rare that they are able to keep their shine for decades. Our master artisans, who inherit this precious legacy from generation to generation, make almost one million Persian knots in every single rug with the high dexterity of their hands, faster than the eye.

82 processes There are 82 processes in producing a hand-knotted carpet. Each process provides its own potential of employability or work scope.

Acquiring the Finest Fibers Collecting Premium Fibers Jaipur Rugs’ hand-knotted rugs are made of premium quality wool, silk and bamboo silk. Depending on its design, each rug is made of one or more of these materials in order to achieve the unique textures and beauty which now became our signature. Therefore, the story of a Jaipur Rugs’ creation often begins in the rural remote areas in India where villagers, once a year, in early summer, shear their sheep. The raw premium wool is then sold in Bikaner where producers from villages and buyers gather, providing income for many families in rural India. We also import wool from more than 40 countries around the world, especially from New Zealand’s huge farms, known to produce best quality wool worldwide. Moreover, Jaipur Rugs imports premium silk and bamboo silk, which resembles the former by its softness and elasticity with an extra beautiful sheen. Hence, we insure to get the best fibers the world has to offer for our customers.

Carding and Spinning Hand-carding is the operation during which wool is combed and cleaned using carders in order to make a web of fibers suitable for spinning which consists in twisting the wool fibers to form yarns. Wool is spun by hand using traditional spinning wheels called charkhas which provide self-sufficiency and independence to thousands of women, fulfilling the dream Gandhi had for this fascinating and ingenious tool. These hand-conducted processes give to Jaipur Rugs’ hand-knotted rugs their gorgeous beauty and incomparable character.

Dyeing and Drying After spinning, the precious materials are collected, washed and immersed in dye vats which contain boiling hot water heated by rudimentary fires in which the required amount of dye is added. The dye, which composition depends on the desired designs, is constantly turned to make sure that color is homogeneous. At Jaipur Rugs, we always innovate by looking for creating new nuances and dyes that are natural and eco-friendly. Furthermore, we offer a range of 1100 quality shades in our various fibers. After absorbing colors, dyed wool, silk and bamboo silk are sun-dried, creating one of the most wonderful sights in Jaipur. The processed materials are now ready to be sent to the weavers in villages.

Designing Art for the Floor Design Development The design is the foundation of the beauty of a rug. Our designers’ creativity, vast experience and passion create unique designs that combine tradition and innovation to express breathtaking beauty. Afterwards, their creations are drawn on maps giving the exact details of every single knot which are sent to the villages. There, they will be brought to life by master artisans’ looms. Sample threads are also attached to the maps so that weavers can clearly identify the color and fiber used for each of the million knots she weaves.

Hand knotting A loom is set for the rug to be knotted. On average, three people weave on a loom. Following the design drawn on a map by our inspired designers, the artisan hand-ties individual knots onto the vertical strings seen on the back-side of a rug. Once a line has been completed, a horizontal thread is passed in and out of the vertical strings set on the loom which holds all the previous knots in place. Weaving a rug takes as long as 6 months to two years, depending on the size and complexity of the design. Faster than the eye, their skilled hands weave thousands of perfect knots on each rug. Indeed, an average weaver can tie around 10,000 knots per day so imagine the amount of time and effort put in each of the pieces of art that our artisans create for your home.

Taking Shape Washing & Stretching Once the rug has been woven, it is taken off the loom and sent for washing to remove dust and any excess fiber that gets trapped. Washing a rug lasts a whole day. Waters are alternately pushed into two opposite directions creating a fantastic spectacle to watch. Once it has been washed, the rug is stretched for 3 to 5 days in order to dry it flat while avoiding any shrinkage. Various methods are used depending on the type of rug.

Finishing In this phase, the rug is sent to a finishing center. There, it goes through as many as 28 processes. An important one consists into clipping it manually by meticulous artisans to remove any imperfection and give it its final shape. After going through a strict inspection, our Jaipur Rugs’ masterpiece is ready to embellish your home. Meanwhile, you may also remember your rug as a symbol of the connection between you and at least 180 people in rural India, involved in the manufacturing process of each rug, which provides them with durable livelihoods meaning descent life for them and their families.
