A LIFE STYLE IN PARADISE The lifestyle holiday vacation club is a hotel and resort franchise based in the caribbean, with its main compound in Puerto Plata, Dominican republic. The task of this project was to re-design an existing casino building in a marina and convert it into a chairman’s club. The club is composed of diverse facilities which include a nice welcoming foyer, a lobby that hosts the sales department, a Lobster Restaurant, a Cafe del Mar Lounge that features a pool area that faces the marina and the yachts, bbq stations, a double decked bar that hosts Dj’s and artists, a huge led screen and a façade made for entertainment while at the same time being environmentally friendly. On the upper floors there is a casino, a Theater, a Nightclub, and a cigar club with a nice rooftop Terrace that overlooks the marina and the atlantic ocean.
Logistics Having this gigantic program, we (the firm I worked with) had to partner with another firm in order to Finish everything on time. Because the team was composed of 8 architects each person was assigned an area of focus, the person would then develop it and discuss it with the rest of the team. In the end it was nice that everyone participated in every part of the project, even through consulting.

Rush hour Due to the nature of the Deadline, the design methodology wasn’t as usual. Every day we had to produce floor plans for the next day and even for the same day (it was madness i’m telling you). From day one, we got the construction crew installed, and for the next three months it was intense production. It was a design-build process.

THE FAร ADE
The concept of the faรงade was based on a fish-sca skin that deflects heat and helps maintain the interio and dry against the tropical climate of the Dominica public. It is also equiped with LED ilumination that cre a great ambience for events. Colors can be custom for any ocation, creating a staging area for concert cultural events.
From the very begining of the conception of this Faรง it was kept in mind the efficiency of the construction terials and its modular installation. The wind resistanc also a factor for defining the metallic structure.

THE CONCEPT The design concept is based on the history of its location (Casa de Campo, Punta Cana, Dominican Republic.) which allows us to go back in time and see the richness of its previous architecture and current typologies. A very important characteristic of this project is the tropical aspect, which is evident throughout the home because the spaces embrace their surroundings, the colors, the aromas, breezes, lights and shadows. This results in a very privileged place that maintains its splendor all year long. The richness of the vegetation we encounter in the location permeates the residences from every angle, giving it a more natural feel. We wanted the users to feel at home, to feel that the house is part of a big garden instead of having one. The modern factor. We are in a moment where the aesthetics are re-invented by the second and we believe that technology is part of it. It provides us with the tools to make a better architecture, one that is more reliable, more sustainable and up to date. It gives us the mechanisms to have a sensitive approach towards the natural environment. Siteplan: Personalized Urban Aspect The development of the project consists of 35 villas, located in Casa de Campo, Dominican Republic. Each house will start up with the same basic layout engulfed within a 1,500 m2 lot and varies in a footprint between 400-450 m2 depending on how the client wants to personalize the villa. Furthermore, in order to have a neighborhood that doesn’t feel mass produced, we designed a very flexible layout, in which the client can add or remove bedrooms, living room area, kitchen area and dining area as they please.

In addition to the flexible layout, everything was conceived as adaptable extensions. The entrance and the parking module can be moved to different locations. All the doors and windows have standardized local market dimensions so its easier for the client to select and personalize. Moreover all the spaces were designed to individually support an undefined number of roof shapes, slopes, and materials. At the end, each user can have a customized home without having a significant effect on the production workflow.

THE INSTITUTION The Carol Morgan School is a private and nonprofit, college-preparatory school that implants a passion for learning and a sense of community. The education center is also characterized by its bilingual aspect, teaching in both english and Spanish. The school plays an important role in the sports sector, it leads the way and sets the standards to other education centers in the Dominican Republic.

We come in to re-design all their sports facilities, which include a new gym building that houses an aerobics room, a dancing hall, a weight lifting room, a theater with all the dressing rooms and backstage equipment. It also includes 3 interchangeable basketball courts and 3 interchangeable volleyball courts. On the outside of this main building we have designed a running track, a soccer field with 3 smaller ones for training and a baseball field.

The Concept: Responding to the city and the community. On this portfolio I’m limiting myself to only present the main library as a preview of the proposal. The library, or as we call it in the firm “The main Building” will house not only the library but the rector’s departments, administrative offices, registry and parking lot. It also features 2 gardens, an water garden, a plaza and a “escalinata” where students can enjoy the fresh air while studying or taking a break. The design of this “Main Building” answers to its urban context, as analyzed, the immediate surrounding buildings are 2 to 3 stories height and one of them is an important historic one. This is the reason why the library has a staggered shape, in which from the 2nd floor above the following ones are reduced in size and set away from the street and plaza, giving an impression that its only as high as the other buildings. We believe this balance in heights is important to create a harmonious feeling on campus and the city.
What is UNAPEC? UNAPEC was founded as a technical university in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, back in 1964. The name stands for “Universidad de Acción Pro Educación y Cultura” which means “University of Pro-active education and Culture”. In the present, the institution has a population of 9,128 students, and has expansion plans for the near future.

As a part of a joint venture agreement with other international institutions, the university was to adjust and refurbish all their facilities in order to comply with international regulations. To meet this goal, the board made an architectural competition and invited 8 architecture firms to participate. I am just glad to say that we (Arcoplan S.R.L) participated and won.

FIBROCK: BACHEL
On this portfolio I’m attaching an extract of my Bachelors Graduation Thesis. After profoundly analysing traditional construction methods and specially wall systems, I have developed a product that could make low cost dwellings cost effective and efficient. This product, “Fibrock” is a concrete-polymer hybrid mortar that when dried has properties similar to concrete masonry units and properties similar to OSB panels, durock and densglass.

Because of its properties it can be used to obtain any shape required, for example: one could make masonry units (blocks) or make sheathing panels like sheetrock and adapt the material to any construction method and dimensions. The added benefits are that if one would use it to make blocks, it is 64% lighter in weight that regular concrete. If used to make sheathing panels like sheetrock, its as flexible but 74.7% more resistant to impacts and pressure.

My bachelor’s degree thesis consisted on two parts. The first was the development of an efficient construction material that can be used for a wide-range of applications like the fabrication of blocks, sheathing panels and column/ beam formwork. The second part consisted on the design of a low cost home that uses components fabricated with the FIBROCK® material. CONCEPT The idea is to design a residential project that adapts to the users necessities instead of obligating the users adapt to the built architecture. This is achievable with a flexible enough design that its modular and articulative, composed by pieces and blocks that can be easily connected. CAPACITY These homes are designed as low-cost dwellings, mainly for people with very little resources. Each home could be built with a single bedroom at first. Through time, while families grow in size and monetarily, the dwellings can grow with them, in this case by adding bedrooms for the children.

With a process like this, families that don’t earn much money can afford a home and improve their quality of life with an efficient investment.

1.They were re-measured to observe the variations on the dimensions. 2.They were weighted on a digital scale (in grams). 3.Then the panels were placed under a hydraulic piston and pressure was applied on the center until the panel cracked. With this the point load resistance was determined. (The units used were Kilonewtons “Kn�). The results highlighted in orange show the best results.

▪ FIBROCK... ▪ ▪ -It is 74.7% stronger than sheetrock® ▪ -It is 71.6% stronger than Durock® ▪ -When compared to 240kg/cm2 concrete, its 64% lighter in weight. ▪ -The product has better bending properties than compression, so its better for panelling. ▪ -It has very good thermal properties, it acts like a foam. ▪ -It eco-friendly since it reduces the use of cement (in which the main component is sandstone) by 54%. This reduces the amount of land exploited. ▪ -It uses 55% less water than regular concrete. ▪ -It reduces construction time by 66.67% compared to masonry unit construction methods. ▪
