Friedrich Weinwurm - Henrieta Moravčíková

The present work aims to introduce the first complete picture of the life and work of architect Friedrich Weinwurm (1885 – 1942), one of the most important representatives of the New Objectivity in Slovakia and definitely among the most important 20th-cen­ tury architects in Central Europe. On the basis of several years of research in public and private ar­ chives, an interpretation is presented of the archi­ tect’s oeuvre, with previously unknown facts related to his work explained. At the same time, a compari­ son is made between Weinwurm’s work and its con­ temporary efforts on both the local and international levels, as well as its integration into the context of the domestic and broader European architectural situa­ tion. Further presenting the architect’s work is a rich array of historic visual materials, photographs, plans, archival documents, and the current photographs by Olja Triaška Stefanovič.

Monografia prináša prvý ucelený obraz o živote a die­ le architekta Friedricha Weinwurma (1885 – 1942), najvýznamnejšieho predstaviteľa novej vecnosti na Slovensku a jedného z najdôležitejších architektov 20. storočia v stredoeurópskom teritóriu. Autorka Henrieta Moravčíková na základe viacročného výs­ kumu v štátnych aj súkromných archívoch inter­ pretuje dielo architekta a osvetľuje dosiaľ neznáme skutočnosti súvisiace s jeho prácou. Nechýba ani po­ rovnanie Weinwurmovho diela s dobovými architek­ tonickými prejavmi miestnej a medzinárodnej scény a jeho začlenenie v kontexte domácej či širšej európ­ skej architektonickej situácie. Dielo architekta prib­ ližuje bohatý dobový obrazový materiál, fotografie, výkresy, archívne dokumenty, ale aj súčasné foto­ grafie Olji Triaška Stefanovičovej.

Teoretička a historička architektúry Henrieta Moravčíková pôsobí, ako vedecká pracovníčka na Oddelení architektúry ÚSTARCH SAV a ako pro­ fesorka na Fakulte architektúry STU v Bratislave.

Publikovala niekoľko monografií a celý rad štúdií o architektúre 20. a 21. storočia.

Henrieta Moravčíková is an architectural theore­ tician and historian employed as a researcher in the Department of Architecture at the Institute of Construction and Architecture at the Slovak Academy of Science, and also holds a professorship at the Faculty of Architecture of the Slovak University of Technology in Bratislava. She has published sev­ eral monographs and many articles on 20th-century and contemporary architecture.

V prvých lúčoch ranného letného slnka smeruje k bratislavskej hlavnej stanici chudý muž strednej výšky. V ruke malý kufrík, v náprsnom vrecku ľahkého plášťa lístok na rýchlik do Budapešti a cestovný pas. Nastúpi a o chvíľu už uháňa smerom na juh k hranici s Maďarskom. Je nervózny, ale spolieha sa na to, že falošný pas je ozaj perfektnou prácou a v rýchlikoch sa kontroly neobjavujú tak často.

Keď sa pred pár dňami dozvedel, že musí opustiť Bratislavu a hlásiť sa v zbernom tábore v Novákoch, prijal jediné možné rozhodnutie, odísť z krajiny.

Starostlivo zabalil posledné zvyšky odbornej literatúry zhromažďovanej desiatky rokov, z ktorej už beztak ostalo len niekoľko architektonických časopisov a holandská kniha o vilách a víkendových domoch, kde sa jeho dielo po prvý raz objavilo v medzinárodnom kontexte. Podarilo sa mu obstarať auto, do ktorého naložil torzo zariadenia architektonickej kancelárie, stôl a stoličku. Všetko potom zveril do opatery Magdy Husákovej-Lokvencovej. V dome, kde si Husákovci prenajímali byt, bol dostatok miesta a ešte aj relatívne bezpečne. Inú možnosť napokon ani nemal. Veď sám v ostatných mesiacoch len striedal podnájmy. Nejaký čas mu prístrešok poskytla rodina Fleischmannovcov na Cintorínskej ulici, neskôr ho prichýlila priateľka Anna a jej manžel doktor Wiener na Uhorskej. Zanechať majetok židovskej rodine však nepovažoval za najlepšie riešenie. Len by ich vystavoval zbytočnému riziku.

Cesta ubieha dobre. Kontrolujú sa lístky. Zrazu sa objaví dvojica maďarských financov. Pýtajú pasy. Údaje porovnávajú s poznámkami v malom zápisníku. Mužova nervozita narastá. Ozýva sa staré zranenie, rozbolí ho hlava. Keď kontrola pristúpi k nemu, snaží sa byť žoviálny. Zavtipkuje bezchybnou maďarčinou a posťažuje si na skoré vstávanie. Financi študujú pas aj zápisník. Nakoniec mu pas vracajú: „Köszönöm. Viszontlátásra!“ Pod kolesami vlaku rachotí most cez Ipel‘, na kopci žiari kupola ostrihomskej baziliky. Muž si vydýchne. Podarilo sa. Onedlho bude v Budapešti, v meste svojej mladosti, kde ho čaká rodina a pár známych. Verí, že v pulzujúcom kotle veľkomesta nájde pre svoju novú identitu šancu na život.

Tento príbeh sa mohol odohrať v niektorý augustový deň roku 1942 a jeho hlavným aktérom mohol byť významný bratislavský architekt Friedrich Weinwurm. Bol to však ozaj jeho príbeh alebo sa osud tohto pozoruhodného muža naplnil úplne inak?

Neobjasnené okolnosti posledných dní a smrti architekta Friedricha Weinwurma, jeho zmiznutie vo víre udalostí druhej svetovej vojny, skutočnosť, že sa zachoval len nepatrný zlomok jeho pozostalosti, ako aj nejednoznačné výpovede pamätníkov spôsobili, že život a dielo jedného z najvýznamnejších

architektov Slovenska sú dodnes čiastočne zahalené tajomstvom. Práve táto tajomnosť spolu s mimoriadne rozsiahlym architektonickým dielom a vplyvom Friedricha Weinwurma na slovenské architektonické prostredie koncentrovaným do dvoch krátkych desaťročí nás pritom nútia skúšať vždy znovu poskladať mozaiku jeho jedinečného príbehu. Názorová konzistentnosť, hlboké presvedčenie o spoločenskom rozmere architektúry a dôslednosť, s akou toto presvedčenie Weinwurm napĺňal, súčasne nastoľujú zásadné otázky týkajúce sa podstaty práce architekta. Veď to napokon bola práve Weinwurmova doba, v ktorej sa nanovo definovalo postavenie aj úlohy architekta v spoločnosti. Nijaký architekt, ktorý kedy pôsobil na Slovensku, pritom nenaplnil tak dokonale predstavu avantgardy o tomto povolaní ako Friedrich Weinwurm. Weinwurm však svojím dielom, spoločenskou angažovanosťou, životným osudom a nakoniec aj tragickou smrťou prekračuje túto predstavu, aby stelesnil osobnosť európskeho ľavicového intelektuála v celej jej komplexnosti, tragickosti, ba z dnešného pohľadu často aj nepochopiteľnosti. Veď kto by už dnes mohol chápať, prečo sa etablovaný úspešný podnikateľ angažuje v ilegálnych aktivitách komunistickej strany, prečo riskuje svoj majetok, prácu aj život pre ideály, ktoré sa mali vzápätí zrútiť pod ťarchou historických udalostí? Kto by porozumel pohnútkam, ktoré vedú takmer šesťdesiatročného muža s následkami po zranení z prvej svetovej vojny k riskantnému úteku z vlasti? Kto by v dnešnej blahobytom utlmenej Európe chápal takú radikalizáciu politických postojov, aká vyústila do policajných perzekúcií, väznenia a predčasnej smrti tohto pozoruhodného muža?

Osobnosť Friedricha Weinwurma však nemožno premeriavať parametrami dnešnej doby. Jeho konanie, rovnako ako architektonické dielo sú obrazom jedinečného obdobia európskych dejín, ktoré tak môžeme aj vďaka nemu bližšie spoznať a snáď aj pochopiť.

In the first rays of the early-summer sun, a shabbily dressed man of moderate height is making his way to Bratislava’s main rail station. In one hand is a small suitcase; in the pocket of his light trenchcoat is a ticket for the express train to Budapest and a passport. He climbs on to the train, and shortly is heading southwards, toward the Hungarian border.

He is nervous, but is relying on the perfect craftsmanship of his false passport, and on the fewer inspections on express routes. When, only a few days before, he learned that he had to leave Bratislava and present himself at the deportation camp in Nováky, he made the only possible decision: to escape from Slovakia. With great care, he packed the last remnants of his professional library accumulated over decades, now consisting only of a few architectural journals and a Dutch book on villas and weekend houses, where his own designs first appeared in an international publication. And he succeeded in hiring a car, into which he loaded what remained of the furnishings of his architectural studio: one drafting table and a chair. All of these were entrusted to the care of Magda Husáková-Lokvencová. In the house rented by the Husák family, there was sufficient space and relative safety. Indeed, he had no other possibility; he himself had merely been moving from household to household for the past months. For a time, he was given shelter by the Fleischmann family in Cintorínska ulica, and later he was taken in by his friend Anna and her husband, Dr. Wiener in Uhorská ulica. However, leaving his property with a Jewish family he never considered as the best solution: it would only put them in unnecessary danger.

The journey is passing well. First, the tickets are checked. Then at once there appear a pair of Hungarian customs officials. They ask for passports, comparing their contents with the notes in a small notebook. The man’s nervousness increased.

His old wounds begin to hurt, his head aches. When the inspectors arrive before him, he tries to appear jovial, joking in faultless Hungarian and complaining about how early he had to get up. The customs men study the passport and their notebook. Finally, they return the passport with a brief courtesy and farewell: “Köszönöm. Viszontlátásra!“ Under the wheels of the train, the bridge across the Ipolya River rattles; on the hill above, the cupola of the Esztergom basilica shines. The man breathes a sigh of relief. He has succeeded. Very soon, he will be in Budapest, the city of his youth, where he has his family and a few acquaintances. Here, in the pulsing ferment of the metropolis, he believes he can find a chance for survival under his new identity.

This story could have happened on an August day in 1942, with its chief actor as the important

Bratislava architect Friedrich Weinwurm. Yet was it really his story, or did the fate of this exceptional individual end completely differently?

The still-unexplained circumstances of the last days and the death of architect Friedrich Weinwurm, his vanishing into the whirlwind of horrors of World War II, the survival of only a miniscule fragment of his papers and even the ambiguous testimony of surviving acquaintances and colleagues have all meant that the life and work of one of Slovakia’s greatest architects remains today partially veiled in obscurity. Indeed, it is this obscurity, combined with the exceptionally broad extent of Weinwurm’s architectonic oeuvre and his influence on the Slovak architectural scene, concentrated into two brief decades, that urges us all the more forcefully to attempt again to reassemble the mosaic of his unique story. In the integrity of his opinions, his deep conviction of the social dimension of architecture, and the thoroughness with which Weinwurm put his beliefs into action, there are also many essential questions that bring up the basic foundation of the architect’s work. For one, the period when Weinwurm was most active saw the most sweeping re-definition of the role of the architect in society. And there was no architect practicing in Slovakia during this era who so thoroughly met the conceptions of the avant-garde concerning this profession than Friedrich Weinwurm. Yet at the same time, Weinwurm’s oeuvre, political engagements, life-story and in the end his tragic death as well all reach beyond this standpoint, almost embodying the personality of a European left-wing intellectual in its full complexity, its tragedy, and even its many aspects that appear incomprehensible from the present.

For really: who today could comprehend why a successful, well-established entrepreneur would join in the illegal activities of the Communist Party; why would he risk his property, work and even life for ideals that seemed to be falling under the weight of historical events? Who could understand the motives that led a man of nearly sixty years in age, still suffering from his wounds in World War I, to attempt a dangerous escape from his homeland? Who, in today’s prosperity-swaddled Europe could understand such a radicalisation of political opinions as to lead to police persecution, imprisonment and eventually the premature death of an important artistic figure?

The personality of Friedrich Weinwurm, in the end, cannot be captured within the parameters of today.

His actions, as much as his architectural legacy, are the image of a unique period of European history, which thr-ough him we can view more closely and perhaps even understand better.

„Ozajstná vitalita existuje len tam, kde sa tvoria nové veci.“

častým cieľom uhorských študentov. Bol tak vôbec prvý z územia dnešného Slovenska, ktorý na Königliche technische Hochschule zu Berlin (Kráľovská vysoká škola technická v Berlíne) študoval.

Práve táto jednoznačná voľba jednej z najlepších vtedajších technických škôl v Európe naznačuje, že nešlo o náhodu, ale o dobre premyslený výber. Štúdium v Berlíne pritom vôbec nebolo lacné.

Každý semester musel zahraničný študent zaplatiť 80 ríšskych mariek len za možnosť študovať a ďalších približne 40 mariek za absolvovanie prednášok a cvičení.5 V čase Weinwurmovho príchodu na školu viedol Oddelenie architektúry významný nemecký architekt Christoph Hehl (1847 – 1911), ktorý sa preslávil najmä sakrálnymi stavbami v neorománskom štýle. V nasledujúcich troch rokoch sa na pozícii vedúceho Oddelenia architektúry vystriedali ďalší traja profesori, historik architektúry Richard Borrmann (1852 – 1931), významný predstaviteľ neskorého historizmu Felix Genzmer (1856 – 1929), ktorý založil úspešný kurz Stavby miest, a špecialista na ornament v architektúre Friedrich Laske (1854 – 1918).

Pätnásteho novembra 1919 otvorili v priestoroch bratislavskej Reduty výstavu Gartensatdt - und Kunstausstellung (Výstava záhradného mesta a umenia), ktorú pripravil Bratislavský umelecký spolok. Miestna tlač podujatie hojne reflektovala, veď vraj išlo o „oslobodzujúci umelecký čin po dlhoročnej stagnácii”.1 Aj keď sa všetci recenzenti nezhodli na kladnom hodnotení vystavených umeleckých diel, architektonické návrhy na záhradné mesto vzbudili jednoznačne pozitívne reakcie. Jedným z autorov, ktorí na výstave prezentovali svoje názory na moderné bývanie v zeleni, bol aj architekt Friedrich Weinwurm. Práve jeho návrhy označil dopisovateľ pražského denníka Prager Tagblatt ako „veľkolepo umiestnené a dobre premyslené“.2 Weinwurm už ozaj nebol v tom čase žiadnym nováčikom. Mal za sebou nielen predvojnové skúsenosti z Budapešti, ale práve v tom čase pracoval na návrhu rozsiahlej prestavby Sanatória Grand v Bratislave.

Všetko naznačovalo, že architektovi ovládajúcemu nemčinu, maďarčinu a slovenčinu, s dobrým vzdelaním a pracovnými skúsenosťami, sa vo vtedajšom Prešporku otvárajú sľubné perspektívy.

A to napriek tomu, že jeho profesionálna existencia, pôvodne formovaná širokým stredoeurópskym teritóriom, sa mala vtesnať do rámca neveľkého Československa.

C ie ľaved o mý fl u k t u ant Friedrich Weinwurm sa narodil 30. augusta 1885 v Borskom Mikuláši, v nemecky hovoriacej židovskej rodine vlastníka miestnej tehelne Nathana Weinwurma. Weinwurmovci patrili k menej majetnej strednej vrstve, o čom svedčí nielen pomerne skromný príbytok v tradičnom dedinskom dome v centre obce, ale aj skutočnosť, že po vyťažení miestneho zdroja ílu na prelome dvadsiatych a tridsiatych rokov 20. storočia musela tehelňa vyhlásiť bankrot. Krátko na to sa rodina z Borského Mikuláša odsťahovala.3 V čase Weinwurmovej mladosti sa však rodinnému podniku ešte darilo dobre. Dostatočné finančné zázemie umožnilo, že sa mladému Friedrichovi hneď od začiatku dostalo dobré vzdelanie. Stredoškolské štúdium začal na bratislavskom kráľovskom katolíckom gymnáziu. Po absolvovaní jedného ročníka však školu opustil a zmaturoval roku 1905 na Oberrealschule (vyššej reálnej škole) v Temešvári. Ťažko povedať, či sa pod zmenu školy podpísali rodinné väzby k tomu takmer 500 kilometrov od Bratislavy vzdialenému mestu na juhovýchode monarchie, alebo nespútaná osobnosť mladého Weinwurma. Zmena školy patrila pri problematických študentoch aj v tom čase k štandardným riešeniam. Vlažný vzťah mladého Friedricha k štúdiu dokumentuje aj maturitné vysvedčenie, na ktorom prevažujú známky „elégsegés“ (dostatočný). Z toho skôr podpriemerného hodnotenia sa však vymykajú tri predmety, s ktorými mladý Weinwurm očividne žiadne problémy nemal, nemecký jazyk, filozofia a kreslenie.4 Práve výtvarné nadanie nepochybne podmienilo aj jeho rozhodnutie ísť študovať architektúru. Určitú úlohu pri výbere školy však zaiste zohral tiež fakt, že štúdium na technickej uni-

Zameraniu vedúcich osobností školy zodpovedala aj výučba.

Preferovalo sa štúdium historických slohov, pričom viac ako tretina zo 40 predmetov, ktoré Weinwurm v Berlíne počas šiestich semestrov absolvoval, sa týkala historickej architektúry a kreslenia ornamentu. Významnou súčasťou vzdelávania boli technické disciplíny ako statika, stavebné konštrukcie či technické kreslenie. Tie tvorili takmer polovicu absolvovaných predmetov.6 Aj keď išlo o technickú školu, ostávala verná tradícii Karla F. Schinkela a pozoruhodný priestor vyhradila štúdiu antiky, počnúc dejinami antickej architektúry a umenia až po kreslenie antického ornamentu. Práve klasická stavebná kultúra v podobe diel Schinkela, Stracka, Stülera či ich mladších nasledovníkov Messela a Schulzeho rozhodujúcim spôsobom determinovala tvár vtedajšieho Berlína. Samotná škola už síce v tom čase nesídlila v budove Schinkelovej Bauakademie, ale klasickú tradíciu reprezentovala aj rozsiahla neorenesančná budova s niekoľkými nádvoriami a reprezentačným piano nobile s obrím stĺporadím na priečelí, ktorá bola od roku 1884 sídlom školy.

S pokojným prostredím relatívne konzervatívnej školy ostro kontrastovalo dianie vo vtedajšom Berlíne, ktorý bol v tom čase jedným z najdôležitejších hospodárskych, intelektuálnych aj umeleckých centier nemeckého cisárstva. V jeho búrlivej atmosfére sa miešalo opojenie z hospodárskych úspechov krajiny, nástojčivá túžba po nových umeleckých formách aj prejavy prebúdzajúceho

verzite predstavovalo v tom čase seriózne vzdelanie s dobrou perspektívou praktického uplatnenia. Voľba školy bola ambiciózna.

Weinwurm neostal doma v Uhorsku, ani sa nerozhodol pre blízku Viedeň. Práve naopak, zamieril do Berlína, ktorý nebol až takým

Friedrich Weinwurm was born 30 August 1885 in Borský Mikuláš, in the German-speaking Jewish family of the owner of the local brickworks, Nathan Weinwurm. Among the local middle class, the Weinwurms were not among the most prosperous, attested not merely by their relatively modest dwelling in a traditional house close to the village centre, but also the eventual bankruptcy of the brickworks after the exhaustion, towards the end of the 1920 s, of the supply of clay in the vicinity. Shortly afterward, by the early 1930s, the family left Borský Mikuláš altogether.3 During Weinwurm’s youth, though, the family business was still relatively prosperous, providing sufficient financial resources to ensure that the young Friedrich, from the very beginning, could have a good education. His secondary studies began at the Royal Catholic Lyceum in Bratislava – yet after only one year, he left the school, to graduate in 1905 from the Oberrealschule in Temesvár (now Timişoara, Romania).

On 15 November 1919, an exhibit opened in the Bratislava Reduta, entitled “Gartenstadt - und Kunstausstellung” (Exhibition of the Garden City and Art) and prepared by the Bratislava Artistic Association. The local press devoted considerable attention to it, seeing the event as a „liberating artistic act after long years of stagnation“.1 Even though not all reviewers concurred on the positive evaluation of the artworks on display, the architectural designs for the garden city evoked uniformly positive responses. It is hard to say whether this change in schools was the result of family ties to the town, almost 500 kilometres distant from Bratislava towards the southeast edge of the monarchy, or a lack of discipline on the part of young Weinwurm, since changes in educational institutions were, even then, a standard solution for problematic students. Young Friedrich’s lukewarm response to his scholastic obligations is evident as well from his graduation report, with the prevailing mark being (in Hungarian) “elégsegés“ – sufficient (equivalent to a C). From this almost below-average evaluation, though, three subjects stand out in which Weinwurm clearly had no problems whatsoever: German, philosophy, and drawing.4 Without question, it must have been his artistic talent that underlay his decision to study architecture, as well as the prevailing sense in the era that study of a technical subject assured a solid education with the promise of practical application. And his choice of an institution was notably ambitious. Weinwurm chose not to remain at home, within the bounds of the old Kingdom of Hungary, or even to head for nearby Vienna. Quite the opposite: he set off for Berlin, hardly the preferred choice for students from the eastern half of the Hapsburg realms. Indeed, he was the very first student from

residences amid greenery was architect Friedrich Weinwurm, whose own designs were noted by the correspondent for the Prague German-language daily Prager Tagblatt as “generously positioned and well-conceived“.2 Indeed, at that time Weinwurm was hardly a newcomer, with not only his pre-war experience in Budapest, but even his contemporary work on the design for the extensive rebuilding of the Sanatorium Grand in Bratislava.

Everything seemed to indicate that for an architect equally fluent in German, Hungarian and Slovak, with excellent education and practical experience, had great prospects ahead of him, in the city then still known by its Hapsburg name of “Prešporok” (Pressburg/Pozsony) – even if his professional career, originally shaped by the wider territory of the Hapsburg realms, now had to fit itself into the narrower frame of the eastern region of the new Czechoslovakia.

„Nedá sa dosť často opakovať, že ozajstné umenie môže priniesť len priame, mocné, neprifarbené priznanie sa k vlastnej dobe.“

Weinwurma „odvaha používať vlastnú odvážnu a súčasne osobnú reč“ základnou požiadavkou.2 Popri celom rade spojitostí a odlišností diela oboch architektov však do popredia vystupuje ešte ďalšia stránka ich pôsobenia. Je ňou úloha, ktorú zohrali v procese otvárania ciest novej architektonickej kultúry v stredoeurópskom prostredí.

Podobne determinujúce pôsobenie, aké sa zvykne pripisovať Adolfovi Loosovi vo viedenskom prostredí či Ernstovi Wiesnerovi v Brne, môžeme v Bratislave, ale aj v širšom slovenskom kontexte prisúdiť práve Friedrichovi Weinwurmovi.

„Slovenský Loos“, tak nazval Friedricha Weinwurma český historik architektúry Zdeněk Lukeš, pričom jeho tvorbu označil za „možno nie príliš okázalú, ale zato rovnako veľmi pôsobivú“.1 Na určitú podobnosť diela týchto dvoch architektov sme poukázali už pri Weinwurmovej budapeštianskej prvotine. Spôsob, akým Loos interpretoval tradičné členenie objemu budovy na podnož, telo a ukončenie, uplatňoval vo svojich návrhoch aj Friedrich Weinwurm. O tom, že poznal Loosovo dielo, by mohlo svedčiť aj využívanie antických motívov. Podobne ako Loos aj Weinwurm vo svojich prvých prácach totiž s obľubou používal jednoduchý portikus s dórskymi stĺpmi. Rovnaký motív sa však tešil obľube aj u Weinwurmovho drážďanského učiteľa Heinricha Tessenowa. Nešlo pritom o dáke napodobovanie Adolfa Loosa, ale o logický výsledok dobového architektonického uvažovania, ktoré objavilo v antike či skôr v prostých klasicistických dielach podnety na tvorbu nových, dobe primeraných vyjadrovacích prostriedkov. Rovnaké zdroje ovplyvnili pravdepodobne aj spôsob práce s ušľachtilým materiálom, charakteristický rovnako pre Loosa ako pre Weinwurma, jeho opracovanie do podoby hladkých platní, ktoré boli navzájom spojené tak, aby evokovali dojem súvislých plôch. V klasicistických palácoch či parížskych kaviarňach treba hľadať predobraz ďalšieho motívu, šachovnicovej dlažby, ktorý obaja architekti s obľubou používali. Pri porovnaní ponímania základnej architektonickej kategórie, priestoru, sa však názory našich dvoch architektov zásadne odlišovali. Zatiaľ čo v prípade Loosa by sme mohli hovoriť o organickom priestorovom koncepte, kde sa jednotlivé miestnosti vrstvia a spájajú do zložitých, na prvý pohľad nejasných, prekvapivých vzťahov, Weinwurm pracuje s priestorom oveľa pragmatickejšie, aj keď je napriek vlastnej rétorike stále vzdialený funkcionalistickému schematizmu. Loosove budovy sú plné „mezanínov“ obohacujúcich základnú skladbu podlaží a podmieňujúcich existenciu celého radu odlišne komponovaných schodísk.

Aj u Weinwurma je schodisko obľúbeným motívom, jednotlivé podlažia sú však pre neho tak jednoznačne podmienené pravidlami konštrukcie, že schodiská slúžia výlučne na prekonávanie rozdielov medzi nimi. Určitú príbuznosť medzi oboma architektmi by sme určite našli aj v obdive k západnej kultúre, v radikálnom odmietaní ornamentu či v rezervovanom vzťahu ku kresleniu. Schematické výkresy dokumentujúce návrhy Friedricha Weinwurma i angažovanie kresliča práve na zhotovenie perspektívnych skíc svedčia o rovnako vlažnom vzťahu k výtvarnej stránke architektonického návrhu. Napriek tomu, že by sme určite našli ešte rad ďalších paralel, pri takom porovnávaní je užitočné mať na mysli skutočnosť, že zatiaľ čo Adolf Loos bol nepochybne priekopníkom nového chápania architektúry i samotnej profesie architekta, o pätnásť rokov mladší Weinwurm nazeral už na jeho dielo obohatený o skúsenosť z aktuálnej medzi-

Ja s n á , v n úto r n e p o d m i e n e n á j e d n o d uc h o s ť V súvislosti s dielom Friedricha Weinwurma sa zvyknú spomínať dva pojmy, vecnosť a purizmus. Zatiaľ čo vecnosť sa objavuje najmä v dobových textoch (tento termín používal aj Weinwurm) pojem purizmus zase nachádzame u historikov architektúry, ktorí reflektovali Weinwurmovu tvorbu v druhej polovici 20. storočia.3 Weinwurm pritom použil pojem vecnosť prvý raz až pomerne neskoro, keď tak označil metódu tvorby, ktorá „krok za krokom dokazuje myšlienkový pochod – vytvárať prvky, ktoré by na každého pôsobili rovnako vecne, prakticky a samozrejme, aj

the formation of a European avant-garde in the 1920s. Unlike Loos, who was convinced that “architects. are never the ones who should invent new forms”, it was a basic necessity for Weinwurm to have “the courage. To use an original. brave and simultaneously personal language”.2

The “Slovak Adolf Loos” is how Friedrich Weinwurm has been characterized by the Czech architectural historian Zdeněk Lukeš, who also described his oeuvre as “perhaps not too imposing, but for all that quite impressive“.1 Indeed, a definite similarity between the works of these two architects was noted even in the previous chapter, in our discussion of Weinwurm’s first completed work in Budapest. Above all, the method through which Loos interpreted the traditional articulation of a building’s volume as a plinth, shaft and capitol was also employed in the designs of Friedrich Weinwurm. Another possible link to a knowledge of Loos’s work could be the use of classicist motifs: both Loos and Weinwurm in their early designs favoured the motif of a simple portico with Doric columns. However, similar motifs were also frequent in the work of Weinwurm’s Dresden professor Heinrich Tessenow: not as an additional imitation of Adolf Loos, but as the logical outcome of the architectural philosophies of the era that found, in Hellenic or the most simple Classicist works, inspiration for creating means of expression that matched the spirit of the new age. Comparable sources also likely shaped the method of using and handling expensive natural materials that marked both Loos and Weinwurm: the working of them into smooth surfaces joined together to give the impression of a single surface. Classicist palaces or even Parisian cafes, in turn, supplied a prefiguration of another motif – checkerboard paving – also to the liking of both architects. Moreover, in comparing the conception of the most basic architectural category, space, the opinions of these two architects radically diverged. While, in the case of Loos, we could speak of an organic spatial concept where the individual rooms are layered and connected into complex, not immediately evident, surprising relationships, Weinwurm worked with space far more pragmatically, even though it remained (in spite of his own rhetoric) far from Functionalist schematism. Loos’s buildings are full of “mezzanine” levels enriching the basic structure of floors, and bringing into existence a wide range of differently composed stairs. Weinwurm also had the staircase as a preferred motif, yet the individual floors are for him unequivocally subordinated to the rules of the structure, such that the stairs serve exclusively to overcome the height differences between them. Perhaps one definite likeness between the two architects could be found in their admiration for Western Europe, their radical rejection of ornament, or their reserved stance towards architectural drafting.

The schematic blueprints documenting the designs of Friedrich Weinwurm, as well as even the use of hired draftsmen for preparing perspective elevations, clearly shows his own distant relation to the aesthetic side of the architectonic design. Yet, though we could definitely find a great many additional parallels, it is useful to keep in mind that while Adolf Loos was, without ques-

Moreover, amid all the many possible connections and differences in the work of both architects, there is one final aspect of their life-works that emerges as crucial. That is to say: the role that each of them played in the process of opening paths towards a new architectonic culture in the immediate region of central Europe. Similarly to the determining effect that is often ascribed to Adolf Loos in Vienna or Ernst Wiesner in Brno, we can find a similar influence, in Bratislava but no less in Slovakia as a whole, on the part of Friedrich Weinwurm.

esteticky.”4 O niečo skôr, roku 1928, charakterizoval ako „vecnosť vzdialenú modernistickým hrám“ Weinwurmovo dielo aj známy nemecký teoretik architektúry Leo Adler.5 V tom čase však už termín vecnosť neslúžil len na označenie funkčne podmieneného spôsobu navrhovania, ale aj socialistického prístupu k architektúre. Možno to boli práve sociálno-politické konotácie tohto pojmu, ktoré primali Weinwurma použiť ho pri charakterizovaní vlastnej tvorivej metódy. Pojem vecnosť spojený s Adolfom Loosom a nemeckou modernou lepšie vyjadroval aj Weinwurmovu potrebu pragmatického koncipovania architektonického diela než purizmus, ktorý v dobovej diskusii prezentoval najmä Le Corbusier alebo pražská puristická štvorka, zdôrazňujúc práve výtvarnú stránku architektúry. Nech už boli dôvody preferencie pojmu vecnosť akékoľvek, rovnako ako pri purizme aj tu sa za „základ racionálnej reči architektúry“ považoval práve klasicizmus.6 Klasicizmus a jeho postupné zjednodušovanie teda sprevádzali aj prvé architektonické diela Friedricha Weinwurma.

kritiku, na adresu architektonických návrhov nešetrila uznaním. „Divákom sa môžu zdať stavby studené,“ písala, „nekladie sa tu totiž dôraz na zbytočné zdobenie, ale sú výrazom našej doby.“8 „Priame, mocné, neprifarbené priznanie sa k vlastnej dobe“ vnímal v tom čase ako jedinú cestu k „ozajstnému umeniu“ aj samotný architekt, keď vo viedenskom spoločenskom „polmesačníku“ Moderne Welt po prvý raz formuloval vlastný autorský program.9 Pri charakteristike „dobe primeraného stavebného umenia“ sa pritom sústredil najmä na organizáciu bytovej prevádzky a moderný dom prirovnával k stroju, ktorého vonkajší vzhľad je „nemeniteľným výsledkom vnútorného usporiadania“.10 Z rovnakých funkcionalistických pozícií vysvetľoval aj prevádzku bytu, ktorá sa mala členiť na „spoločenskú prevádzku, hospodársku prevádzku a spaciu prevádzku“, pričom očakával, že bude „premyslená tak, aby každá osoba vykonala svoju cestu bez prekážok a s čo najmenšou stratou času“.11 Vtipná, funkčne podmienená argumentácia sprevádzala aj Weinwurmovu obhajobu fasády bez dekorácií: „Ak by moji stavebníci liezli po fasáde a nachádzali by v tom výnimočné potešenie, možno by som sa rozhodol vyzdobiť ju ornamentálnymi pomôckami, keďže sa však združujú vo vnútri domu, v obytných priestoroch, terasách, strešných záhradách, považujem za nutné prispôsobiť vonkajšok vnútornému usporiadaniu priestorov.“12 Výber ilustrácií ešte podčiarkoval nekompromisné vyznenie príspevku. Okrem dvoch ukážok realizovaných budov sprevádzali Weinwurmov text perspektívne kresby aktuálnych architektonických návrhov. Jednoduché stereotomické objemy tu dopĺňali hladké fasády a ploché strechy. Keďže text vyšiel v rovnakom čase, ako prebiehala bratislavská výstava, môžeme predpokladať, že medzi exponátmi boli aj tieto návrhy. Na rozdiel od monochromatického vyhotovenia zobrazení v časopise však ponúkala výstava návštevníkom aj „pôžitok iného druhu“, kolorované kresby „Kunstgewerblera Kovácsa“, vyhotovené na Weinwurmovu objednávku a vykazujúce, aspoň podľa Leweke Weyde, ozajstnú „umeleckú hodnotu“.13 Čo to vlastne bolo za architektúru, ktorá vzbudila pozornosť domáceho bratislavského aj viedenského publika? Okrem návrhov domu továrnika Wittenberga v Žiline, vily generálneho riaditeľa M. Reisnera a bytového domu so „strešnou záhradou“ pre Dr. Klauberta v Bratislave sa mohol Weinwurm pochváliť aj práve v tom čase dokončenou bratislavskou vilou Jakoba Sonnenfelda.Ì s. 220 Práve túto neokázalú a napriek tomu pôsobivú budovu by sme mohli považovať za prvú ucelenú demonštráciu architektovho už relatívne ustáleného autorského postoja.

Prehľadné dispozičné riešenie, v rámci ktorého sa dôsledne dbá na orientáciu jednotlivých miestností na svetové strany, prepojenie s exteriérom či minimalizácia komunikačných plôch predstavovali nový pohľad na prevádzku a hygienu bývania. Ústredná hala, okolo ktorej sú radené jednotlivé obytné miestnosti, či precízne oddelenie obsluhovaných a obslužných priestorov však svedčili skôr o architektovom rešpekte k tradícii. Znalosť historickej architektúry a schopnosť čerpať z nej inšpiráciu dokumentovala aj určitá ozvena barokovej enfilády, prepojenie jednotlivých obytných miestností tak, aby spolu vytvárali jeden pôsobivý

„Jasnú, vnútorne podmienenú jednoduchosť“ vnímala ako cieľ Weinwurmovho umeleckého úsilia aj historička umenia Gizela Leweke Weyde, ktorá v jednom z bratislavských denníkov na jeseň roku 1924 recenzovala architektovu prvú samostatnú výstavu.7 Prísne vzaté, nešlo ozaj o samostatnú výstavu.

Architekt sa o tri miestnosti v hoteli Carlton delil s maliarom Dariom Rappaportom, známym portrétistom, ktorý medzi inými nakreslil aj portrét samotného architekta. Zatiaľ čo dielo realistického maliara Rappaporta si od Leweke Weyde vyslúžilo tvrdú

Weinwurm himself, the concept of purism is found mainly among architectural historians looking back from the later 20th century towards Weinwurm’s work.3 Weinwurm, in fact, used the concept of objectivity only relatively late in his career, applying it to the method of creation that “step by step reveals the procession of thoughts – the creation of elements. that would appear to all as equally objective, practical, and of course aesthetic.” 4 It was somewhat previously, in 1928, that the words “an objectivity far from Modernist games” had been applied to Weinwurm’s oeuvre by the leading German architectural theoretician Leo Adler. 5 At this time, though, the word ‘objectivity’ was no longer limited to designation of a functionally determined approach to design, but moreover towards a socialist-minded approach to architecture in general. Perhaps it was precisely these socio-political connotations of the term that led Weinwurm to claim it for characterisation of his own creative method. However, even the connection with Adolf Loos and German Modernism implied through ‘objectivity’ did offer a better expression of Weinwurm’s desire for a pragmatic conception of architecture than did ‘purism’, at the time related most specifically to Le Corbusier or the ‘Purist Four’ in Prague, who stressed the aesthetic side of modern architecture. Whatever the reasons for preferring one word over the other may have been, it is clear that he regarded the “basis of the rational language of architecture” as lying as much in classicism as purism. 6 As we nave noted, classicism and its gradual simplification are more than evident in the first architectonic works of Friedrich Weinwurm.

they do not put stress on unnecessary ornament, but are an expression of our age”.8 This “direct, powerful, unadorned recognition of one’s own time” was seen by the architect himself, who in Vienna’s bi-monthly periodical Moderne Welt presented his first actual formulation of a personal authorial program.9 In characterising this “building art fitted to its era”, though, he focused primarily on the organisation of residential functions, comparing the modern house to a machine whose exterior appearance is the “unalterable result of its internal layout”.10 It was from similarly Functionalist positions that he explained as well the actual functions of the residence, which should be divided into a “social function, economic function and sleeping function”, through which he expected the residence to be “conceived so that each person completes his own trajectory without hindrances and with the smallest possible waste of time”.11 Indeed, a witty Functionalist argument even underlay Weinwurm’s defence of undecorated facades: “If my clients decided to climb up the facade and found a special enjoyment therein, perhaps I might decide adorn it with ornaments, yet if they remain within the house’s interior, in the residential areas, terraces, rooftop gardens, I see it as necessary to adapt the outside to the interior organisation of spaces.”12 Even the choice of illustrations underscored the uncompromising tone of the article. Except for two examples of completed buildings, Weinwurm’s text was accompanied by his perspective sketches of the latest architectural designs: simplified stereotomic volumes with smooth facades and flat roofs. Since the text was published at the same time as the Bratislava exhibition, we could well assume that these designs were included among the displays. Unlike the monochrome reproductions in the Viennese publication, thought, the exhibition also offered the visitors a “pleasure of a different kind”: the watercolour sketches of the “Kunstgewerbler” Kovács, prepared at Weinwurm’s order and displaying, at least in the view of Leweke Weyde, a definite “artistic value”.13 What in fact was this architecture that managed to capture the attention of the public not only in Bratislava but even Vienna?

with “roof garden” for Dr. Klaubert in Bratislava, Weinwurm could also, at this point, take pride in the just-completed Bratislava villa of Jakob Sonnenfeld.Ì p. 220 Precisely this unassuming yet nonetheless striking building could be regarded as the first true demonstration of its author’s now relatively fixed creative stance. The clear layout, within which much care was taken on the compass orientation of the individual rooms, connections with the exterior or the minimum of communication areas, represented a new approach to living functions and hygiene. Yet the presence of a central hall around which the individual living spaces are arranged, or the precise separation of service and served areas, attest to the architect’s respect for tradition. Knowledge of architectural history and the ability to draw inspiration from it are also documented by the clear evocation of a Baroque enfilade, connecting the individual living areas so as to create in total a single, imposing space. And it was such a spatial approach that later became characteristic for Weinwurm’s residential designs in the following years. In its exterior appearance, the villa was the “outcome of the interior arrangements”, determining its overall volume as

This “clear, internally conditioned simplicity” was also seen as the goal of Weinwurm’s artistic efforts by art historian Gizela Leweke Weyde, who reviewed the architect’s first public exhibit in a German-language Bratislava daily in the spring of 1924. 7 Strictly speaking, it was not even an independent exhibit: the architect shared the three spaces in the Hotel Carlton with painter Dario Rappaport, a well-known portraitist whose sitters included even Weinwurm himself. While the work of the realist Rappaport garnered harsh criticism from Leweke Weyde, she hardly was sparing in her praise for the architectural designs. “A viewer might find the buildings cold “, she wrote, “for

Duch čistoty, čestnosti, principiálnosti a hĺbky musí ukázať cestu z hlučného zmätku dnešnej bezradnosti a túto cestu môže ukázať len prostredníctvom plánovanej organizácie výroby a spotreby.

Realizácia obytného súboru Unitas sprevádzaná explicitne formulovanou predstavou o architektúre a stavebnej výrobe ako o priamych nástrojoch na uskutočnenie zmeny spoločenského usporiadania patrí k prelomovým v kontexte myslenia o sociálnom bývaní na Slovensku aj v širších regionálnych súvislostiach.

Súčasne je prvým konzistentným príspevkom slovenskej architektonickej scény ku kľúčovej téme európskej avantgardy na prelome dvadsiatych a tridsiatych rokov 20. storočia.

„Náklad cca 25 000 000 Kč, denne pracovalo 500 – 600 robotníkov, mzdy činili cca 8 000 000 Kč a prevedenie trvalo 7,5 mesiaca pracovného času.“1 Tak sumarizuje dianie na stavbe obytného súboru Unitas v Bratislave príspevok v časopise Nová Bratislava, ktorý uverejnili bezprostredne po jeho dokončení na jeseň roku 1931.

Autori príspevku aj týmto strohým výpočtom pripomínajú kľúčové momenty výstavby: rýchlosť stavania, nízku cenu a pracovnú príležitosť pre manuálne pracujúcich. Strohú faktografiu charakteristickú pre celú prezentáciu projektu však dopĺňa rozsiahly text autora projektu Friedricha Weinwurma zásadne argumentujúci výstavbu práve univerzálnymi ľudskými hodnotami. Čítame v ňom, že skracovanie dĺžky výstavby, zavádzanie prefabrikácie či narastanie výšky stavieb „je dnes samozrejmosťou, lebo pri nich už netreba riešiť žiadne technické problémy”. Pozornosť sa podľa Weinwurma sústreďuje „výlučne na človeka a jeho spoločenstvo,

Winfried Nerdinger v úvode katalógu výstavy L’ Architecture Engagée vychádza z predpokladu, že angažovanú architektúru rovnako ako angažované umenie charakterizuje „osvietenecký, eticky motivovaný postoj, jasne vyjadrená emancipačná utópia a predstava, že dielo môže ovplyvniť celospoločenské súvislosti“. Zámerom angažovanej architektúry je pritom „štrukturálna zmena a nastolenie nového spoločenského poriadku“.5 Práve také pohnútky, teda snaha o principiálnu zmenu spoločenského usporiadania, motivovali profesionálne aj širšie spoločenské pôsobenie architekta Friedricha Weinwurma. Práca na projektoch bývania pre nemajetných, teoretické texty argumentujúce potrebu zmeny v architektúre, vo výstavbe aj v celej spoločnosti, pôsobenie v ľavicovo orientovaných spoločenských organizáciách aj spolupráca s komunistickou stranou boli charakteristickým prejavom európskej architektonickej avantgardy, súčasne však predstavovali Weinwurmovu priamu reakciu na miestnu spoločenskú situáciu. Architektúra, ktorú Friedrich Weinwurm vytvoril, tiež nebola autonómna, ale súvisela rovnako s európskou architektonickou diskusiou, ako aj s novými skutočnosťami lokálnej situácie.

jeho spôsob života, prácu a bytie“.2 Cestu k naplneniu šťastného ľudského osudu architekt vidí v racionálnom uchopení skutočnosti, v plánovaní a správnej organizácii. Rozhodujúcu úlohu pritom podľa neho zohráva „plánovitá organizácia výroby a spotreby“ a „normovaná masová výroba“, ktorá umožňuje, aby boli jej produkty všeobecne dostupné. Ďalším podstatným faktorom, ktorý podľa Weinwurma ovplyvňuje „novú cestu“ architektúry, je meniaci sa pohľad na spoločnosť. „Už nie je dôležitý osud jednotlivca, ale osud spoločenstva, ktorý podmieňujú hospodárske zákonitosti a organizačné vzťahy človeka k človeku, človeka k práci a človeka k okolitým vládnucim silám“, a preto treba „kolektivizmus“ považovať za nevyhnutný „princíp organizácie spoločnos-

A spirit of clarity, refinement, principle and depth must show a way out of the chaotic noise of today’s intellectual confusion, and the showing of this way is only to be resolved through the planned organisation of production and consumption.

a conviction that the work can influence much broader social relations”. At the same time, politically engaged architecture also works towards a “structural change and implementation of a new social order”.5 Precisely such motivations, specifically the desire for a deep-seated change in the organisation of society, stimulated the professional as well as the wider social activities of Friedrich Weinwurm. Whether it was work on projects of housing for the least fortunate, writing of theoretical texts arguing for the need of radical changes in architecture, construction or society as a whole, involvement with left-wing organisations or even cooperation with the Communist Party, all of these aspects were characteristic for the European architectonic avant-garde, yet in addition they formed Weinwurm’s direct personal reaction to the local social situation. The architecture that Friedrich Weinwurm created during this period was itself hardly autonomous: linked as much to Europe-wide architectural debates as to the new realities of his immediate situation.

“Costs of ca. 25,000,000 Czechoslovak crowns, daily work of 500 – 600 labourers, wages of around 8,000,000 crowns and 7.5 months of working time for completion “ 1 – such was the summary of the construction procedure for the Unitas residential complex in Bratislava published in the magazine Nová Bratislava, appearing immediately after finishing in the spring of 1931. Even this austere listing of figures underscores the authors’ key point regarding this building: the speed of construction, the low cost, and jobs for the working class. And yet the bare factual description, characteristic of the project as a whole, was supplemented by a long text by the project’s architect, Friedrich Weinwurm, providing a principle argument for construction based on universal human values. In it, we can read that the shortening of construction time, the implementation of prefabrication or the growing height of buildings are “the commonplaces of today, since here it is no longer necessary to address any technical problems”. As a result, Weinwurm continued, attention could be concentrated “exclusively on the human subject and his society, his way of living, working and existing”.2 The path towards fulfilment of a fortunate human fate was viewed in the rational comprehension of reality, in directed planning and correct organisation. Here, he asserted, the decisive role was held by “the planned organisation of production and consumption” and “standardised mass production”, ensuring that the products could become available to all. Another essential factor that Weinwurm viewed as shaping the “new path” for architecture was the changing view of society. “No longer is the individual’s fate important, but that of the society, underlined.

By the laws of economics and the organisational relationships of person to person, person to work, and person to the surrounding forces of power”, such that “collectivism” had to be viewed as the inevitable principle of social organisation”.3 These conditions of “our new era” should, Weinwurm concluded, be first and primarily reflected within architecture, “intended for function., striving for purity of the technical organism., economical.

And refusing unnecessary ornamentation”.4 Realisation of the Unitas residential complex was accompanied by an explicitly formulated view of architecture and building “manufacturing” as direct implements for realising changes in the social order: hence it marks a major point of change in the context of reflections on social housing in Slovakia as well as even the wider region. At the same time, it forms the first intellectually consistent contribution from the Slovak architecture scene to a key theme of the Europe-wide avant-garde in the late 1920 s and early 1930 s.

Reflecting the seriousness of this problem was the effort made by the International Congress of Modern Architecture – CIAM (Congrès internationaux d‘architecture moderne), which made the housing question the central focus of its meetings in both 1929 and 1930. A significant contribution to this international debate was offered by representatives of Czechoslovakia’s avant-garde, most specifically through the figure of the Prague architectural theorist Karel Teige, then one of the most radical exponents of left-wing Functionalism in Czechoslovakia. It was Teige, working with active contributions from the architects of the Prague association Levá fronta [Left Front], who formulated the theoretical basis for social housing that could be adopted (or challenged) by the national architectural profession. Yet no less important for the development of social housing as a major issue was a series of legislative measures commenced by the Czechoslovak government as early as 1919 with its Construction Act (no. 281). In the years to come, additional laws were enacted, leading to a partial surge in apartment construction from 1927 to 1930. However, a decisive influence on the situation regarding housing construction in Slovakia only came with Act no. 45/1930. In addition to the original Construction and Housing Policy Act of 1921, in which the state agreed to provide direct financial support to the construction of low-cost apartments though without any more detailed specifications or figures of floor area, the new law added a differently conceived tool of legislation. This law set the conditions for state guarantees for bank loans, tax relief for buildings with small and minimum flats, various payment exceptions and moreover, for the first time, defined the individual size characteristics of the flats, including the small and minimum categories. A “small flat” was determined as one in which the area of residential space did not exceed 80 m2. The “minimum flat” was determined as consisting of only one room and a kitchen, with an area between 30 and 40 m2. Within the system of support, municipalities and

osobitne pražskému teoretikovi architektúry Karlovi Teigemu, ktorý patril v tom čase k najradikálnejším predstaviteľom ľavicového funkcionalizmu v Československu. Bol to práve on, kto s aktívnym prispením architektov pražského združenia Levá fronta vytvoril teoretickú základňu sociálneho bývania, na ktorú mohla nadviazať, prípadne sa s ňou konfrontovať miestna architektonická scéna. Pre rozvoj problematiky sociálneho bývania bola rovnako dôležitá aj séria legislatívnych opatrení, ktoré

percentom krytia úveru štátnou zárukou až do výšky 50 percent nákladov.6 Táto legislatívna úprava sa vzápätí stala významnou motiváciou výstavby mestských a družstevných nájomných bytových domov a spätne ju možno hodnotiť ako jeden z podstatných iniciačných nástrojov sociálneho bývania v Československu.

Prvé snahy o riešenie bytovej otázky nemajetných na území bývalého Československa však spadajú do staršej histórie, konkrétne do obdobia bývalej rakúsko-uhorskej monarchie. Táto, zmietaná národnostnými problémami, už síce nebola schopná položiť seriózne základy novej politiky bytovej výstavby, ale v prvých rokoch 20. storočia aspoň uskutočnila niekoľko pokusov, ktoré mali naštartovať reformu v tejto oblasti. Medzi nimi bolo napríklad aj zriadenie štátneho fondu na podporu výstavby malých bytov z roku 1910. V súvislosti s riešením bytovej otázky vo vtedajšej monarchii sa zvyknú spomínať dva základné spôsoby výstavby. Jeden predstavovala výstavba radových rodinných domov podľa anglického vzoru, kde bytová jednotka bola súčasne samostatným rodinným domom, v monarchii sa však vo väčšej miere nepresadila. Druhý spôsob nadväzoval na model tzv. sociálneho paláca s malými bytmi a určitým spoločným vybavením, ktorý vyvíjali raní socialisti ako Robert Owen a Charles Fourier. Práve sociálne paláce boli pravdepodobne predobrazom budúcej hromadnej bytovej výstavby, ktorá sa na území bývalej monarchie po prvý raz v histórii explicitne manifestovala projektom Rote Wien (Červená Viedeň) realizovaným v rokoch 1919 až 1934.7 V Bratislave našli na začiatku 20. storočia ohlas oba modely riešenia bytovej otázky nemajetných, radové domy aj sociálne paláce. Prvé radové rodinné domy pre svojich zamestnancov stavali miestni vlastníci tovární. Aj tieto však boli určené skôr pre úradníkov, vyššie postavených majstrov a vedúcich výroby. Výnimku predstavovala len Masarykova kolónia v Trnávke, kde roku 1930 plánovali realizáciu až 1 000 rodinných domov pre robotníkov, alebo výraznou socialistickou rétorikou sprevádzaná výstavba tzv. Ľudovej štvrte z roku 1931. Model radových rodinných domov uplatnil aj Friedrich Weinwurm v rámci návrhu záhradného mesta Schatlerberg plánovaného na okraji Bratislavy ešte roku 1919. Po roku 1930 sa však v bytovej výstavbe v ČSR jednoznačne presadil práve model bytového domu s malými bytmi, ktorý mal výhodnejšiu štátnu finančnú podporu, lepšie zodpovedal celkovým spoločenským pomerom v republike. Súčasne odrážal aj aktuálnu tému vtedajšej architektonickej diskusie, minimálny byt a kolektívne bývanie, ktorú v rámci Československa v tom čase najvýraznejšie presadzovala česká ľavicová avantgarda.

Legislatívna úprava z roku 1930 skutočne viedla k celkovej mobilizácii štátnej správy aj obcí vo vzťahu k bytovej politike. Zakladali sa stavebné bytové družstvá, vypisovali desiatky architektonických súťaží na bytové domy s malými bytmi a následne sa posilnila celková bytová výstavba najmä v najväčších mestách bývalého Československa, v Prahe, Brne a Bratislave.

Roku 1930 vypísala napríklad pražská obec a Ústredná sociálna poisťovňa tri súťaže na domy s minimálnymi bytmi v Prahe.

začala uskutočňovať československá vláda už roku 1919 zákonom č. 281 o stavebnom ruchu. V nasledujúcich rokoch pribudli ďalšie zákony, ktoré sa podpísali pod čiastočný rozvoj bytovej výstavby v rokoch 1927 až 1930. Rozhodujúci vplyv na situáciu v bytovej výstavbe na Slovensku však malo až prijatie zákon č. 45/1930. K pôvodným zákonom o výstavbe a bytovej politike z roku 1921, v zmysle ktorých štát poskytoval priamu finančnú podporu na výstavbu lacných bytov bez ich bližšej špecifikácie či plošných rozmerov, tak pribudol nový, odlišne koncipovaný legislatívny nástroj. Zákon stanovil podmienky štátnej záruky na hypotekárne úvery, daňové oslobodenie domov s malými a najmenšími bytmi, rozličné poplatkové úľavy a súčasne po prvý raz definoval jednotlivé plošné kategórie bytov vrátane bytu malého a najmenšieho. Malým sa rozumel taký byt, v ktorom plocha obytných miestností neprekračovala 80 m2. Najmenší byt mohol pozostávať len z jednej izby a kuchyne a jeho plocha sa mala pohybovať v rozmedzí od 30 do 40 m2. Obce a družstvá pritom boli v systéme podpory zvýhodnené pred jednotlivcami vyšším

cooperatives were given an advantage over individuals with a higher rate of state coverage for loans, up to 50% of costs.6 Immediately, this law provided a significant motivation for constructing municipal and cooperative apartment buildings, and with hindsight can be regarded as one of the chief initiative tools for social housing in Czechoslovakia.

The first efforts for addressing the question of housing for the poorest classes within the territory of Czechoslovakia, however, date back to an earlier era, specifically to the period of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy. As a state seriously disturbed by its restive nationalities, the monarchy was not capable itself of seriously formulating a new housing policy, yet during the first years of the 20th century several attempts were made with the aim of starting reform in this area. Among them, for instance, was the creation of a state fund for the construction of small flats in 1910. In connection with social housing experiments in the Hapsburg era, it is usually to mention two basic methods of construction. One, the construction of single-family row houses in the English style, where the residential

In Bratislava at the start of the 20th century both models for the solution of housing for the poor – the row-house and the social palace – found support. The first small row-houses were built by local factory owners for their employees, though these were overwhelmingly intended for office workers, supervisors or the most high-positioned craftsmen. The only exceptions could be found in the ‘Masaryk Colony’ (Masarykova kolónia) in Trnávka, where in 1930 plans were made for realisation of up to 1000 single-family houses for ordinary workers, or the notably socialist rhetoric around the construction of the ‘People’s Quarter’ (Ľudová štvrť) in 1931. A row-house typology was even used by Friedrich Weinwurm within his design for the garden city of Schatlerberg, planned for the edge of Bratislava as early as 1919. After 1930, however, social housing in Czechoslovakia uniformly shifted to the model of an apartment block of small flats: the form with the most advantageous state support, a closer match with the overall social conditions in the nation, and most of all closely reflected the current themes under discussion by architects, the minimum residence and collective forms, then most fervently supported by the left-wing Czech avant-garde.

The legislation from 1930 genuinely mobilised both national and local governments to address housing policy, as well as spurring the foundation of apartment-construction cooperatives, the opening of dozens of architectural competitions for blocks of small flats, and more generally to an overall strengthening of housing construction primarily in the largest Czechoslovak cities: Prague, Brno and Bratislava. In one instance, in 1930 the city of Prague and the Central Social Insurance Office held three competitions for minimal-residence buildings in Prague; one year later, a competition for a “block of small-apartment buildings” was also held by the Prague Communist housing cooperative Včela (Bee). However, as architectural historian Rostislav Švácha notes, “the realisation of these visionary projects came up against insurmountable barriers, from the vacillating response of the State Regulatory Commission. through insufficient investments up to Prague’s hilly terrain.”, so that Prague’s architectural avant-garde eventually never received the chance to bring to reality its ideas of minimum residences and collective housing.8 In Bratislava, the construction of small and minimum flats from the outset proceeded relatively smoothly. The first competition for buildings of small rental flats was held by the city government in 1926. After the implementation of Act no. 45/1930, there followed the construction of additional apartment blocks, by the city and even more notably by cooperatives, in which several hundred of Bratislava’s poorest citizens could find their own “minimum residence”. Contributing to a certain extent to the openness of the city to this trend was undoubtedly the geographical proximity of Vienna, where many social housing projects were successfully realised, the relatively strong influence of the Social Democrats in the city council, but also in the phenomenon of the housing cooperative, which truly flourished in Slovakia during these years. However, for promotion of new forms of construction and modern building techniques, chief credit should go to the city regulatory commission and

unit was simultaneously a private dwelling, did not enjoy much success in Austro-Hungary. The other method was derived from the model of the ‘social palace’ with small flats and a certain degree of shared facilities, as proposed by early Socialists such as Robert Owen and Charles Fourier. Indeed, it is the ‘social palace’ that most likely formed the prefiguration of mass housing construction that first appeared in the territories of the former monarchy in explicit form first of all through the Rote Wien (Red Vienna) project realised between 1919 and 1934.7

Prvú súťaž na nájomné domy s malometrážnymi bytmi vypísalo mesto už roku 1926. Po prijatí spomínaného zákona č. 45/1930 nasledovala výstavba ďalších mestských, ale najmä družstevných bytových domov, v ktorých našli svoj „najmenší byt“ stovky bratislavských nemajetných.

Určitý podiel na otvorenosti miestneho prostredia tomuto trendu mala nepochybne blízkosť Viedne, kde sa projekt sociálneho bývania úspešne realizoval, relatívne silný vplyv sociálnej demokracie v mestskej rade, ale aj fenomén družstevníctva, ktoré sa na Slovensku v tom čase prudko rozvíjalo. O presadzovanie nových foriem zástavby a moderného stavania sa však zaslúžila najmä mestská regulačná komisia a jej členovia, progresívne naladení architekti ako Alois Balán, Jiří Grossmann, Juraj Tvarožek, Emil Belluš či Friedrich Weinwurm. Nemalý podiel na otvorenosti mesta vo vzťahu k modernej architektúre mal aj architekt Eugen Barta, ktorý od polovice dvadsiatych rokov pôsobil vo funkcii hlavného architekta mesta. V tejto súvislosti určite stojí za zmienku skutočnosť, že zatiaľ čo v Prahe, Brne či vo Viedni sa najucelenejšie názory architektonickej avantgardy na moderné bývanie manifestovali prostredníctvom výstavných vilových štvrtí, ako bola pražská Baba, brnianska kolónia Nový dům a viedenské Werkbundsiedlung, v Bratislave sa premietli práve do obytných súborov s malými bytmi ako Unitas a Nová doba.

Spolu s ďalšou absolventkou Bauhausu fotografkou Irenou Blühovou sa podieľali na sociografickom prieskume Slovenska, ktorého výsledky publikovali nielen v Novej Bratislave, ale aj v ďalších ľavicových periodikách.

Prostredníctvom priamych kontaktov s ruskou avantgardou propagovali nové ruské umenie a architektúru. V Novej Bratislave publikovali preklady textov ruských konštruktivistov, organizovali prednášky a diskusie. Bola to však práve „intenzívna spolupráca s angažovanou skupinou Sociofoto“ a vizuálny spôsob,

Slovenská ľavicová umelecká avantgarda sa spočiatku o architektúru zaujímala len minimálne. Vo svojich textoch sa síce sporadicky dotkli vybraných stránok architektúry, ale v ich argumentáciách zaberala skôr okrajové ilustratívne postavenie.9 Architekti pôsobiaci na Slovensku mali zase ideologicky pomerne nevyhranené postoje a viac ich zaujímal praktický výkon architektonickej profesie než vyhlásenia a manifesty avantgardy.

Weinwurm bol v tejto súvislosti od začiatku výnimkou. Už v polovici dvadsiatych rokov vyzdvihovala kritika nielen „jasnú, čistú, vnútorne podmienenú jednoduchosť“ jeho diel, ale upozorňovala aj na „jeho životný demokratický zmysel a sociálne cítenie, ktoré kontrastuje zreteľne s tradicionálnymi, aristokratickými tendenciami tunajšej spoločnosti“.10 Weinwurmovo postavenie kľúčovej osobnosti domáceho architektonického predvoja spolu s jeho vyhraneným ľavicovým postojom a angažovaným konaním nakoniec spôsobili, že sa na Slovensku stal hlavným spojovníkom medzi ľavicovou umeleckou avantgardou a architektúrou.

Spočiatku sa aj Weinwurm sústreďoval najmä na prevádzku a architektonickú formu domu. Už na sklonku dvadsiatych rokov sa však jeho pozornosť obrátila k hľadaniu prostried-

akým časopis „sugestívne integroval sociálne úsilia v ideologickom rámci ľavicovej avantgardy“, ktoré podmienili, že Nová Bratislava sa dnes považuje za „najavantgardnejší časopis medzivojnového obdobia“.12 Aktívna participácia na príprave časopisu však predstavovala len zlomok Weinwurmovej organizačnej činnosti. Od začiatku tridsiatych rokov minulého storočia sa angažoval v rade ďalších socialisticky orientovaných organizácií, ako bol napríklad robotnícky spolok Sarló (Kosák) či jednota proletárskej

avant-garde” that ensured the reputation of Nová Bratislava today as the “most avant-garde journal of the interwar period”.12 Still, his active participation in the preparation of the journal represented only a small part of Weinwurm’s organisational activity. From the start of the 1930s, he took an active part in a wide range of other socialist-oriented organisations, such as the Hungarian workers’ society Sarló (Sickle) or the trilingual ‘Red Friendship’ Proletarian Sports Association (Rudé priateľstvo / Vörös Barátság / Rote Kameradschaft). The conviction prevalent in this era of the necessity of education for the working classes was met by yet another organisation in which Weinwurm was active, at least in terms of financial support. The ‘Workers’ Academy’ (Robotnícka akadémia) in Bratislava was “first and foremost a socialist school” and it was doubtless under the influence of Weinwurm and his close collaborator Antonín Hořejš that this institution had a special “section for resolving housing questions”.13

Eugen Barta, who served as Bratislava’s chief architect starting from the mid - 1920 s. In this respect, it is certainly worth noting that while in Prague, Brno, or for that matter Vienna, the most consistent expressions of the architectonic avant-garde on modern housing appeared in model villa districts, such as the Baba colony in Prague, the “Nový dům” ensemble in Brno and Vienna’s Werkbundsiedlung, in Bratislava the greatest reflection occurred in the working-class residential blocks of small flats, such as Unitas and Nová doba.

Initially, Slovakia’s left-wing artistic avant-garde had only a minimal interest in architecture. Though its texts did sporadically touch upon certain aspects of architecture, the subject nonetheless occupied more of a marginal, illustrative position in their argumentations.9 In turn, the community of architects active in Slovakia had a relatively non-ideological stance, taking more of an interest in the actual practice of architecture than the declarations and manifestations of the avant-garde. Weinwurm, in this context, was exceptional from the very start. Even in the mid - 1920 s, the critics stressed not only the “clear, pure, internally determined simplicity” of his works but drew equal attention to the “vital democratic thought and social sensitivity, in clear contrast to the traditional, aristocratic tendencies of society here”.10 Weinwurm’s position as a key personality of domestic architectural development, along with his clear left-wing principles and public engagements, eventually led him to emerge as Slovakia’s main link between the leftist avant-garde and the architectural profession.

As should be clear from the preceding chapters, Weinwurm himself also focused, at first, primarily on the function and the architectonic form of the building. Yet by the end of the 1920 s, his attention had shifted towards a search for methods leading towards the definitive elimination of the housing crisis. A more radical stance was evident even in his vocabulary, where Marxist arguments began to appear. It was during this period that Weinwurm began his active involvement with the “organisation of progressive actions”, in which he made links with similarly minded artists and political figures.11 In 1931, working with artistic theorist Antonín Hořejš (1901 – 1967), Bauhaus-trained architect and graphic designer Zdeněk Rossmann (1905 – 1984) and left-wing author Daniel Okáli (1903 – 1987), he began to publish the monthly Nová Bratislava (New Bratislava), which reflected Slovakia’s social events from a critical, Marxist-informed perspective, with special attention paid to social questions and the housing problem. Along with another Bauhaus graduate, photographer Irena Blühová, he took part in social mapping projects for Slovakia, resulting in publications not only in Nová Bratislava but also in other left-wing periodicals. And, using direct contacts with the Russian avant-garde, the editors promoted modern Russian art and architecture: publishing translations of the texts of the Russian Constructivists, or organising lectures and discus-

Another manifestation of Weinwurm’s leftist convictions was his membership in the “Society for Cultural and Economic Contacts with the New Russia”, or later his position on the board of the “Association of Friends of the USSR”, where he contributed preparation of exhibitions and lectures in Soviet architecture. In December 1934, he is even known to have undertaken a trip to Russia, then regarded as a mandatory pilgrimage in Europe’s left-wing intellectual circles. His impressions from this visit were presented at the Bratislava ‘Artists’ Association’ in March 1935.14 The title of his lecture (delivered in German),

Obytný dom pozostáva z dvoch častí so samostatnými vstupmi a schodiskami. Vzhľadom na sklon terénu sú časti navzájom o pol podlažia posunuté. Inak však tvoria kompaktný celok, ktorý charakterizujú hladké fasády s nepravidelne rozmiestnenými okennými otvormi odrážajúcimi vnútornú prevádzku domu. Aj keď sa architektom v tom čase už podarilo prekonať nedôveru miestneho prostredia k plochým strechám, naďalej používali motív výrazne vysunutej rímsy, ktorá sa stala charakteristickou črtou ich tvorby. O tom, za aké dôležité považovali architekti v tom čase presadzovanie plochých striech, svedčí aj fotografia strešnej krajiny domu, ktorú uverejnil nový časopis Slovenský staviteľ v jednom zo svojich prvých čísel.

The apartment block consists of two sections, each with an independent entrance and staircases. Bearing in mind the sloping ground, these two sections are mutually shifted by half a floor level. Otherwise, they come together in a compact whole, marked by smooth facades with irregularly positioned windows revealing the interior layout of the building. Even though by this date the architects had managed to overcome local mistrust towards flat roofs, they continued to employ the motif of a strikingly protruding cornice, which had become a defining feature of their work. Attesting to the importance that Weinwurm and Vécsei attached to the flat roof is the photograph they published of the building’s roof level, which appeared in one of the first issues of the newly founded architectural journal Slovenský staviteľ.

The former orphanage has been rebuilt and enlarged so many times that nothing of its original form is evident. At present, it serves as a senior-citizens’ residence, specially intended for elderly Holocaust survivors in Slovakia.

Jednoduchá budova so zvýšeným prízemím a ďalším poschodím stojí v kompaktnej uličnej zástavbe. Priečelie určoval pravidelný rad okien, pričom väčšina z nich bola radená do dvojíc alebo trojíc. Vstup do domu a komunikačné jadro umiestnené na ľavej strane domu umocňovali asymetrickú kompozíciu fasády. Budova bola pôvodne sídlom spoločnosti s bytom riaditeľa Emanuela Ellenbogena. Ellenbogenovci sa v roku 1939 odsťahovali do Británie, kde naďalej úspešne podnikali s drevom. Majetok na Slovensku stihli včas predať. V budove sa neskôr nachádzalo pľúcne oddelenie miestnej nemocnice. Začiatkom 21. storočia objekt nadstavali a prestavali do novej podoby.

With its raised ground floor and single upper level, this simple structure forms part of a compact street front. The facade is shaped by its regular series of windows, mostly arranged into groups of two or three. With the entrance and the communication core placed on the left side, the asymmetrical composition of the facade is further strengthened. Originally, the building was the headquarters of the wood-processing firm and the residence of its director, Emanuel Ellenbogen. In 1939, the Ellenbogen family succeeded in emigrating to Britain, having sold their property in Slovakia just before the anti-Jewish laws came into effect, where they continued in the wood business. Later, the building contained the pulmonary department of the city hospital. In the early millennium, the building was enlarged and altered to its present appearance.

Pre žilinského advokáta Dr. Alexandra Kovácsa navrhli naši architekti vskutku moderný dom, kde po prvý raz v Žiline uplatnili aj plochú strechu. Na prízemí sa nachádzali obchodné prevádzky, na poschodí kancelária a spoločenské priestory advokátovho bytu. Druhé poschodie zaberali spálne rodiny a priestranná terasa. Budova je dodnes pomerne dobre zachovaná s celým radom pôvodných prvkov a materiálov. Obývajú ju potomkovia pôvodných vlastníkov.

For the Žilina attorney Dr. Alexander Kovács, the architects designed a truly modern house, including their first use of a flat roof in the city. In the ground floor were retail spaces, and on the floor above offices as well as the living areas of the Kovács family flat; the top floor contained the bedrooms and a terrace. Even today, the building is relatively well preserved, with many of the original elements and materials, and is still the residence of descendents of the original owners.

Puristická stavba obradnej siene sa zvykne označovať za medzník v oblasti sepulchrálnej architektúry na Slovensku. Jej architektonickú výnimočnosť si uvedomovali aj doboví recenzenti, ktorí zdôrazňovali, že „najstaršie zo všetkých náboženstiev sa už oslobodilo od všetkého zlého konvenčného, obrátilo sa na novú vecnosť a nechalo túto budovu postaviť ako účelovú stavbu“.

Jadrom symetrickej pravouhlej dispozície je priestranná sieň s trámovým oceľobetónovým stropom a kamennou dlažbou. Weinwurm navrhol stavbu v strohom puristickom výraze na hranici priemyselnej estetiky, čomu zodpovedajú aj veľké oceľové okná v obradnej sieni. Roku 1937 vybudovali podľa návrhu architekta Josefa Konrada nový oporný múr a vstup do cintorína.

The Purist form of the ceremonial hall has often been termed a milestone in the area of funereal architecture in Slovakia. Its exceptional architectonic qualities were also appreciated by contemporary reviewers, who stressed that “the oldest of all faiths has finally liberated itself from all the evils of conventionality, turning towards the new objectivity and having this building constructed as a functional structure“. At the heart of the symmetrical, right-angled layout is a side hall with a beamed ceiling of reinforced concrete with stone flagging. Weinwurm designed the hall with a strict Purist appearance verging on the industrial aesthetic, as matched by the large steel windows in the hall itself. In 1937, a new retaining wall and cemetery entrance was added designed by architect Josef Konrad.
