Messages The Hon. Olivia Grange, CD, MP Minister of Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sport I want to take this opportunity to congratulate the publishers of this, the first edition of the Penn Relays souvenir magazine. This is a bold step in promoting the involvement of Jamaica in this very significant event in our annual sporting calendar. The Penn Relays have been a beneficiary of Jamaica’s involvement in this relay carnival for over 50 years. Similar to our Inter-Secondary Schools Boys and Girls Championships in Jamaica, the Penn Relays is the oldest and largest track and field meet in the United States. Jamaica, through its tradition of high school track and field championship, being in existence for over 100 years, has been a sterling participant in the Penn Relays, which boast a celebrated history of over 120 years. Jamaica is blessed with a proud, rich and vibrant sporting history which, despite its relatively small size, demographically and geographically, has attained the reputation as a world beater in the area of sprinting. The partnership between the Penn Relays and Jamaica has been very successful and highlights the astute management of Jamaica’s Inter-Secondary Schools Sports Association, the support of the volunteers in the Diaspora and the local corporate sponsorship. Throughout the years, Jamaica has won over 250 events at the Relay Carnival and has set high standards and records, as aspirations for others to achieve. The Penn Relays have always provided an excellent platform for Jamaican student athletes to showcase their talents and in so doing many have benefitted from academic scholarships and other opportunities that are life changing. We salute our proud standard-bearers, coaching and administrative staff, parents and support personnel, who have all worked hard in Jamaica’s pursuit of the athletes’ success at the Penn Relays. Walton Small President Inter-Secondary School Sports Association
The Inter-Secondary Schools Sports Association endorses the work of the creator of the new Penn Relays Chronicle. The magazine focuses on Jamaica’s participation at the annual Penn Relays held in April in Philadelphia. Members of the diaspora and the schools’ community welcome the recognition of their athletes on the world stage. Penn Relays is viewed by the many Jamaicans living in the diaspora as its local Boys’ and Girls’ Athletic Championships. They look forward to the rivalry among the teams who despite the usual cool weather perform at a very high standard. With such a rich tradition of excellence, it is important that all partners associated with this product do everything in their power to ensure that the excellence is maintained or improved on and with the introduction of this magazine the future looks bright for our athletes. 3

"Jamination" of The Penn Relays It has been fifty-two years since Donovan Davis on the urging of Herb McKennly, took his Kingston College track team to the Penn Relays. That year the team returned to Jamaican soil with the 4x100 relay championship, won with a team comprising Jim Grant, Rupert Hoilette, Ken Keyes and Lenox Miller. Since that time Jamaica has “jaminated” the oldest continuous collegiate track meet in the United States. So dominant has been Jamaica’s performance that the meet has become an annual pilgrimage for Jamaicans, not only in the United States but as far as Canada and from the “sprint factory”.
One organization that has invested tremendously each year in the desires of the many athletes is Team Jamaica Bickle. With dozens of volunteers and sponsors, the team creates the only athlete village at Penn Relays with the sole purpose of providing a home away from home for the athletes. While at the village the athletes are not only fed familiar food but are also given counseling and physical therapy. Over the years Jamaican schools have won a total of 253 events; 206 on the track and forty-seven in the field. The national teams which competes in the USA vs the rest of the world competition have also done well, winning twelve events over the last eleven years. Jamaican teams have also colored the record books at the Penn Relays. The black green
The crowd’s support of black, green and gold has become a center piece of Franklin Field and the carnival disposition that is always found in Jamaicans compete vociferously with the rest of the world in a stadium that averages around 105, 000 crazy track and field fans each year. Jamaican athletes look forward to traveling to Philadelphia to display their talent every year to win watches and medals, as well as earning the focused eyes of college scouts trying to find additions to their track and field teams. The cost of achieving their dreams is not cheap, however through the support of many alums and private businesses, the Jamaican flag keeps flying at Franklin Field. 4

and gold patriots are responsible for seventeen of the best times and field distances at the championships. Currently eleven of those records still stands. Some of the most notable records include Jamaican icons. In 1965 the first Jamaican team at the Penn Relays which included, Lennox Miller, broke the 21-year-old 4x110 yards relay with a 42.7 seconds performance. World and Olympic record holder Usain Bolt has also left his foot prints on the Penn Relay records books when his team of Mario Forsythe, Yohan Blake and Marvin Anderson sped to 37.90 in 2010. Bolt’s leg was done in a staggering 8.79 seconds. Other notable

Jamaican Penn Relay Winners since 1964 record holders include long jumper Obrien Watson of Jamaica College who this year erased a thirty-year old record with his 16.01meters performance. Jamaica also has some of the longest meet records still standing. Those fifteen years and older include Calabar’s Maurice Wignall’s 1994 long jump of 7.69m, Elva Goulbourne’s 6.40m in the long jump for Dinthill in 1999 and Holmwood’s 4x400 girls team that raced to 3:34.75 seconds in 2001. The performance of Jamaican athletes have done very well for the Penn Relays organizers, both in terms of crowd support and the addition of Jamaican companies as sponsors of the event. But it has been the raw athletics skills and talents that Penn Relay organizers have rewarded and rightly so. Some forty-three Jamaicans have been inducted onto the
Penn Relay Wall of fame and twenty-eight were judged Athletes of the Meet over the years. So overall Jamaica has done well at the Penn relays and with the Jamaican sprint factory churning out the talent it has been parading over the years on the world stage, you can bet the “Jamination” will continue.

2016 Results the high school girls’ discus, Shanice Love of Excelsior became the new record holder with a throw of 54.72 meters, bettering the old mark by 0.42 meters. The previous record was held by Holmwood’s Gleneve Grange. Then, the Kingston College boy’s quartet of Shivnarine Smalling, Akeem Bloomfield, Jhevaughn Matherson and Tyreke Bryan just missed out on owning outright, the 4x100 relay record when they equaled Calabar’s 2015 time of 39.63 seconds. Awards For her record breaking performance which was achieved on her final throw, Shanice Love was awarded the High School Girls’ Athlete for individual Events. The 122nd staging of the World’s oldest continuous collegiate track and field meet was another good one for Jamaican athletes. Jamaica’s participation included thirty-one high schools, three colleges and a national team contingent that ran in the USA vs The Rest of the World relays. Fifteen victories were secured by Jamaica this year, a drop by five from 2015. A comparison of the wins saw the high school boys (7) and the college men (3) maintaining their number of victories from last year, while the high school girls (4) got two less. The national team success was reduced to one victory from the two they got last year and the college women failed to win an event after capturing two titles last year. At the college level G.C. Foster became the newest event winner for Jamaica when they captured the men's 4x100m. Two high schools defended their titles from last year. Edwin Allen continued their dominance of the girls 4x100 and 4x400 with their third consecutive titles in each event while Jamaica College’s Clayton Brown kept his title as the defending high jump champion. This year was another record breaking year for the Jamaican athletes as three records were put on the books. Jamaica College’s Obrien Wasome shaved 0.09 meters off the thirty-eight-year-old triple jump record when he leapt 16.01 meters to beat the mark of 15.92 set by Sanya Owolabi in 1978. In 7

Wall of Fame Inductees There is no denying that Jamaican athletes have dominated the Penn Relays. One only has to look at the black, green and gold colors and the very vociferous crowd that attend each year, which some say make up more than half the attendees. The domination has not gone past the eyes of the
60
Penn Relay organizers and they have rewarded the Jamaicans with their most prestigious award a place on the Wall of Fame. The first of such award was done in 1994 and since that graduating class which included the great Herb McKenley, forty-three other Jamaicans have been inducted. McKenley who didn’t represent his alma mata Calabar at the Penn Relays, got his induction for his performance with the University of Illinois but there is no doubt that his skills and talents were developed at Calabar. Between 1946 and 1947 the great Jamaican won six relay titles for Illinois in the 4x110 (twice), 4x220, 4x440, sprint medley and the distance medley. Of all the inductees only six Jamican schools have managed to have their names inscribed on thirteen of the brown and gold plaques. These include Vere, Kingston College, Camperdown, St. Elizabeth Technical, St. Jago and Holmwood. Vere towers over all Jamaican schools with almost half of the plaques (6) as well as inductees (21) which is a testament of their stupendous performance at the relays over the years. They were the first Jamaican relay team to be inducted and one of only two teams to have double inductees in Janice and Inez Turner. In fact, the Turners including Evette, have the distinction of being the only family with three inductees on the Penn Relays Wall of Fame. Here are the plaques as installed on the Penn Relays Wall of Fame at Franklin Field, University of Pennsylvania.
