Designed primarily as a research facility, the station is clad in a lightweight insulated concrete panel system with punched openings that increases the R-value of the entire building in a uniform manner while making it easy for students to research, manufacture, and test new window and door units using the integrated %XLOGLQJ 26 V\VWHP ZKLFK FDQ SURYLGHG PLQXWH WR PLQXWH IHHGEDFN RQ WKH HQHUJ\ performance of individual zones within the building.

CONCEPTUALI Outside In, Inside Out Access to daylight will be accommodated by introducing as much as possible in as unobtrusive a way as possible. We ȴQG WKDW KHDOWKLHU EXLOW HQYLURQPHQWV H[LVW ZKHUH WKH PRVW daylight is present indoors, and intend to design in such a way that most, if not all, areas of the building experience some form of daylight during the course of an average day.

creating a relaxing background noise while also contributing to evaporative cooling aimed at establishing the plaza as an urban oasis of sorts, where shoppers are encouraged to sit, eat, and play, enjoying enclosed outdoor space where they can escape the heat of the day. Plantings are designed with growth in mind, in

the hopes that 36 years down the line, they will feel like old growth rather than saplings, andwill shade the space as such. Residents are also encouraged to make use of the rooftop terrace, which provides a shared “backyard” styled area to complement the courtyard they share with the rest of the city.

Our design proposal addresses this goal by providing a parking garage that will VHUYH DV D SURPLQHQW MXPSLQJ RÎ? Apartments have ample views of the city, the market, and the river. public rooftop gardens provide some much-needed green space in the fairly dense neighborhood, and allow for safe recreation near to home.

CONCEPTUALI Studying the City Kansas City exceeded my expectations in just about every ZD\ 7KHUH ZDV D YHU\ Č&#x2020;QHZČ&#x2021; XUEDQ IHHO WR LW DV LI WKH FLW\ ZDV just hitting its stride, which sat oddly with the very urban industrial aesthetic that seems to be cropping up across the city, especially in the districts that still retain their old brick structures rather than glass skyscrapers. In the River Market, I got the distinct feeling that between the local music scene, the abundance of fresh produce and worldly selection of food and drink, and the vibrantly colorful splashes of new architecture, that this area was the local %RKHPLDQ ČľDLU GLVWULFW 7KH VPHOOV GU\ JUDVV DQG VSLFHV WKH

esign 'LDJUDPPDWLF 3ODQQLQJ I allowed the site to inform the building form for the most part - a sweep in the side of the hill spirals upward into the terraced green roofs and allows ECHO to “echo” the existing geographic context, hence the project’s name. I knew going into the project that I wanted a curved, dynamic form, and following the slope of the hillside seemed the most natural approach.
