Sally Jeppson Interim Executive Director
As 2019 commences, it is a time to reflect on all that has occurred in 2018. The Arts Center has cause for both celebration and anticipation. In the Chinese horoscope 2018 was the Year of the Dog—for The Arts Center it was the Year of the Hansen Arts Park. Much focus was directed at planning and implementing the ambitious 12 week series of Downtown Arts Market Days. This was the Park’s first full summer season and we have much to celebrate. The volunteers who assisted staff were essential in shouldering some of responsibility for making the Market run smoothly. We could not have done it without them and we greatly appreciate their involvement. We also thank our partners in the Downtown Association, Chamber of Commerce, Jamestown Tourism and City for helping plan the schedule and remaining flexible with crowd control and street closures. Thanks also goes to our neighbors for their flexibility and it is our hope that the future Markets will bring additional patronage to our downtown businesses. We are beginning to map out next summer’s schedule. Many performers have indicated that they would like to return. Of course we have ideas for some changes, but we encourage our members and supporters to offer suggestions for the Market. If you know or would like to suggest musicians or artisans for the summer please contact us. Involving the community in planning the programming for the Hansen Arts Park will ensure that this summer’s series is balanced and diverse—don’t hesitate to let us know your thoughts. However, summers are short in North Dakota. With such a “visible” event it is easy to lose sight of everything else that happens at The Arts Center. Internally, the Arts Center staff is used to wearing many hats and I was reminded these past weeks just how much is happening all the time. We hosted over 100 junior high school students to tour the gallery, we changed the current exhibition, we had a successful stamped jewelry and Art & Sip classes, we hosted Arts After School, we hosted the Friends of the Library meeting, we collaborated with Freedom Resource Center to teach a class on weaving mats for the homeless, we hosted the photography & woodcarvers club. We attended Kiwanis, Optimists and Giving Hearts Day meetings. And so much more! So rest assured even without an Executive Director The Arts Center continues to thrive. The search continues, be patient as we endeavor to locate an exceptional leader to join the team. Stay tuned and Happy New Year.

Lino Azevedo: Lobotomy February 7 –March 16, 2019 Art can be a powerful communicator, sometimes the message is subtle and sometimes its aggressive. Lino’s approach will likely generate a visceral reaction for many who view his exhibition. The exhibition’s title, Lobotomy says it all. Rendered in high detail these ghoulish “portraits” tell the stories of social injustices and political apathy. After only a couple of months of watching cable news and reality TV shows, the artist was mortified at our culture’s lack of engagement on substantive matters. In the information age it deeply saddened the artist that we do not dive deep Front Cover: Facebook, Lino Azevedo, acrylic mixed media, into real political and social issues 12” H x 12”W that are facing our society. We have access to all the great libraries in the world and yet, our airways are filled with mind numbing entertainment. With a noticeable lack of critical thinking and civil discourse, Lino was compelled to hold a mirror up to our society to show how we have lobotomized ourselves. These portraits are the result of the artist’s anguish. The artist’s message, “Turn off the television. Put the smart phone down. Engage. Think. And, by all means, revisit real conversations with fellow citizens. Connect.” Lunch with the Artist Wednesday, February 27 from 12:00 – 1:00 pm. Because of his teaching commitments, Lino will give his presentation and answer questions of attendees via Skype. Please RSVP by Feb 26 if you would like a $5 lunch. Lino Azevedo was born in the 1970’s to Portuguese immigrants near the city of San Francisco, California. Like most small children, Lino enjoyed creating from the soul with simple tools like pencil and crayon. Being a painter herself, his mother saw the potential and let him try his hand with her oils and brushes.
During the grade school years, he was introduced to the world of comic books and role playing games. Throughout his teen years, caped crusaders and wacky wizards would dominate his sketchbooks. After receiving an art award in high school, a counselor suggested San Jose State University for its strong art and design program. Lino graduated in 1997 with his BA in Studio Art and began teaching drawing and painting to both children and adults. With a growing passion for guiding other artists on their journeys, he decided to pursue his MFA in order to teach. In 2013, he received his MFA in Painting from Winthrop University. Lino has subsequently taught at colleges and universities in North Carolina, California and currently teaches art Willison State College. Lino artwork has received numerous accolades and is represented in public and private collections throughout the United States. This Exhibition was produced by the North Dakota Museum of Art and is touring through the Rural Arts Initiative, an educational outreach program that works to encourage and empower rural school students and their teachers to actively participate in learning through the arts.
